Slembanan team updateNooooooooooooo! We have just lost the final of the under-15 World Championship 2-0 to Wight. A real shame. Our boys can still be proud - they started the tournament awfully by losing 5-1 to Farfadillis, and to recover and get all the way to the final is a great achievement, even if we lost.
Wight's first goal came on 15 minutes. It was scored by striker Vurnon Old (who is a prisoner on an island colony). Old jinked inside our defenders, before curling a fantastic shot past John Bunyan, our goalkeeper. This came from a speedy counter-attack, which was started when Wight defender Rumon Skewes headed away a corner from our right-winger, Brad Young.
Our star striker, Ashley Vale, suffered a knock to his leg in training before the match, but, despite being advised not to play, he just went ahead and did so. As a result, he just didn't look himself. He had a few shots on goal, but he wasn't as quick as he normally is. Eventually, a bad tackle on the player after 75 minutes, which resulted in a free-kick and a red card for Wightian defender Etienne Gynn, saw Vale's injury aggravated. The player had to limp off the pitch, and left the stadium, and Farfadillis, in crutches (and a protective cast around his leg).
Without our star striker, we were playing even worse. As a result, Wight got their second goal in the 89th minute, when Evander Spurling volleyed home. Wight captain Wilkie Tregenza lifted the trophy in front of thousands of cheering Wightian fans. Meanwhile, our players clapped the fans, as if to say "Thanks for the support", while the fans did vice versa.
