ATEER POST-DISPATCH

The Javahe Islands National Track Pathball team got off to a sorry start today here in Ateer. The team, made up of some of the only pros in the world, is being called "a disgrace" by the Javahem Pathball Association President, Jamin Wetiirin.

"This is not acceptable! We completely gave up in the final stages of the match!" yelled Wetiirin at a press conference today. "I cannot believe the level of play that our boys put forth today."

"Me and the boys who were supposed to be blocking didn't do their job," blocker Wijin Saarivan said after the match. "I think we underestimated the strength of their team. They have learned the game well."

OOC: I realize that it may be hard to RP for a sport that doesn't really have any defining characteristics, so here is an outline of the general positions. There are three general positions, although they are not defined by the rules. Some players fulfill the role of a blocker. They do exactly what their name implies and impede the progress of the opposing team. Other players are what are known as sprinters. Sprinters are generally the fastest players and have the ability to outrun the pack, although they do need some tackling skill for times when opposing sprinters distance themselves from the pack. The third and most specialized role is that of the bowler. He typically only does one task: rolling the ball down the track in a way that his sprinters can chase after it. He is generally substituted off after he hits a good bowl, although he is called back onto the track when play slows.

Maklohi Vai's loss today was due largely in part to a mis-bowl by Rumao Malopai with 800 meters left. The Vaian sprinters could not recover, and so it was Hanalia in the end who crossed with the ball

After a disappointing start to the Javahem International Pathball Tournament, the Hanalian team managed to recover from their loss to the host team by beating Maklohi Vai in their match today. The match was tough as their opponents had posted the same strong team that had won them their first day match against The Javahe Islands. Some say that it was a fluke win by Hanalia, due to a unforced error by one of the Vaian team with a short distance left to the finish, but from my own perspective the team looked in fantastic shape.

Our team have yet to receive their bye but they are all set up to place high up in the rankings if they continue as they've played so far.

Maklohi Vai defeated 84733842 in a dominant match today, with the Vaian team never losing possession from start to finish. Captain Wono Kalopani said after the match, "After that loss to Hanalia, we really had to look into what we were doing as a team. We had some player-only meetings, no coaches, and those really helped. We played as one unit today, and that was why we won."

Another Pathball Loss

Unfortunately the national team lost again today in Ateer to the Javahem team. Then team looked a little tired today and without a bye it may have been expected after 3 days of this exhaustive game. It looks as though that they have no chance of recovery with only 1 match remaining. We still wish them the best of luck.

"Hey, you!" a voice cries out to a man walking through a dark alleyway. He is wearing a replica pathball kit and carrying a Javahem national flag. A young man, about twenty years old, steps out of the shadows. He is wearing an apron over a brown t-shirt.
"I work at the diner over there," the young man says, waving in the general direction of the shadow from which he came. "We don't have a TV. Were you at the match?"
The first man appears puzzled at first, then lights up. "Yeah. The boys won."
The young man shouts and pumps his fist in the air. "I thought they were dead after that first loss."
"Yeah," comes the reply. "I have to get home now. It's getting late, and the wife is getting worried. Have a nice night, man."
"You too."

Today, one of the closest matches in the history of international pathball competition took place. Super-Llamaland had possession with 200 meters left when a trip up cause the sprinter to hit the ground and the ball to be knocked free. As it careened off to the side of the track, Vaian sprinter Ruto Lapanimakai rushed up track for the anticipated pass ahead from a teammate. That pass came from Umo Munulowai, and Lapanimakai gained possession of the ball with 30 meters left, and secured the victory for the Vaian team. After the match, Lapanimakai said, "You know, I just had faith in my team. I knew they would get there, and I wanted to provide that outlet to score. What a match; thank goodness we have an off day.

What essentially happens now is a semifinal between Super-Llamaland and the host, with the winner set to face the Vaian team in the final.

The team managed to get a good rest today as they had been given today's bye. The best they can now hope for is a tied third place as Super-Llamaland fight the hosts for a chance to play Maklohi Vai in the title match. 84733842 have lost all their matches so far so a third place finish couldn't be that hard!

The Javahem head coach, Jamin Saarivan, walks into the locker room. His players stand in a semicircle.
"Hello, boys," he says, looking around at each of them. "I hope you're having a good time."
A murmur of agreement sounds from the players. It lasts for but two seconds.
"That's good," Saarivan says. "Real good. Were you having fun against the Vaians?"
The answer is more defined this time. "No!"
"You weren't," the coach continues. "Then what made the other games fun?"
"We won!" Again, the answer comes cohesively.
"Do you want to have a good time tonight? Do you want to represent your country well in its sport? Do you want to win?" He is yelling now.
"Yes!"
"Then go out there and do it," Saarivan says.

The Llamaland team lost twice to fall out of the finals, but will play a third-place game with Hanalia tommorrow. They're very excited for this chance.

Third Place Playoffs

A bout of good fortune has secured Hanalia a place in the match for third place. Tomorrow they will face Super-Lamaland to whom they unfortunately lost to in the first match of the tornament. Despite a final uphill climb going into their last match we wish the team the best of luck.

A group of young men pull up at the stadium and get out of the car. The group looks at a large fence separating the parking lot from the concourse. They look around, as though they will soon do something illegal.
A security guard assigned to tonight's match notices them from afar and smiles. He stares at them for a few seconds. The group of boys talk amongst themselves and wait for the guard to leave. The guard chuckles to himself and walks around the corner.
The boys take a crate out of the car and use it to climb over the fence. The people on the concourse pretend not to notice. Around the stadium, similar incidents take place. The stadium swells beyond maximum capacity. The Javahe Islands are ready.
