The Coby Cup / The World Team Tennis Cup (RPs/Results)

Postby Civil Citizenry » Fri Jul 13, 2012 1:59 pm

THE COBY CUP
and
THE WORLD TEAM TENNIS CUP

For years, a two-person tennis tournament was held, former hosted by Delaclava. With the permission of that user, whose nation has gone inactive, Civil Citizenry will host a successor tournament known as the Coby Cup. The tournament is named after Parr Coby, the now-deceased head of the Citiz Tennis Administration. Along with the Coby Cup, the second edition of the World Team Tennis Cup will be contested in Civil Citizenry.

The Coby Cup is a tournament in which teams of two (one man and one woman) play a total of three matches against other teams: a men's singles match, a women's singles match, and a mixed doubles match. Every match is best-of-five sets; all matches in a tie (the term for a contest between two tennis teams) are played in a single day, ICly and OOCly. The exact format will not be determined until sign-ups conclude, but there will likely be a single-round robin group stage, where the top teams move on to a single-elimination knockout stage.

The World Team Tennis Cup is a tournament in which teams of two to four players play a total of five matches against other teams: first two singles matches, then a doubles match, followed by two more singles matches (reversing the opponents of the earlier matches). The players can be of any gender; players can participate in both singles and doubles if they wish, although nations may instead choose to send a different doubles team. Every match is best-of-five sets; matches in a tie will be played over two days ICly, scorinated in one day OOCly. The exact format, again, will be determined when sign-ups conclude, but definitely the knockout stage will be double-elimination.

These are meant to be high-RP tournaments. Please do not sign up if you don't plan to RP. To sign up, just post your nation's representatives; you may sign up for one or both of the tournaments, although each nation only gets one team per tournament (and each user only one nation). Scorination will be done using xkoranate 0.3.3, usually at around 9:00 PM every night. Sign-ups will be open until about 6:00 PM ET on Tuesday, July 17.

The LLTA (Licentian Lawn Tennis Association) will be sending one man (Oliver Dean) and one woman (Amy Mills) to compete in both the Coby Cup and World Team Tennis Cup. Couple of questions though. Where in Civil Citizenry will matches be played ?? And on scorination times, 9:00PM in which time zone ??
This nation has now been reformed as the Licentian Isles. Please direct anything intended for me to that nation.

Matches will be played at several venues, including the prestigious Bartewick Central Academy (home of the Citiz Open) and other sites that have hosted CCC tournaments.

Cutoffs will be at approximately 9:00 PM ET (Eastern Time, GMT -5).

A general note that I will allow RPing starting now, so that the first scorination day can be on Tuesday night (no point giving a couple days for "rosters", what rosters are necessary for tennis? haha). All pre-MD1 RPs will be combined to earn no more than the maximum for one day of RPing (so an RP on Sunday and one on Monday will count together as one day, not two separate days).

Harvest Mice team tennis debut

Postby Free South Califas » Sun Jul 15, 2012 3:08 am

While all the athletes from the newcomer FSC delegation at the Emberton Games went down in flames early in their respective tournaments--save the combined baseball/softball team, which is on fire in both demonstration sports; and the community football team, which recently won their quarterfinal--four tennis players have stood out from the field, surging as high as the round of 32 in their respective disciplines.

Ollie Dean. The man, the myth, the legend. The pride of the LBI (along with St Bart’s AFC). Put simply, Oliver Dean is a Licentian tennis legend...

Oliver Dean sighed. He was in Bartewick, in Civil Citizenry, preparing himself to compete in two consecutive tennis tournaments. The Coby Cup, and the World Team Tennis Cup. In both, he would be competing in doubles with Amy Mills, who he had trained with for the last five years. There have always been rumours of romance between the two, Mills at 22, Dean nearing his 39th birthday. But he had always denied the rumours. He was happy single.

He had become bored of this sort of article. For years, since he emerged on the LTTA Tour scene, winning at the Montfort Open at the tender age of 17, it had been the same. For 21 years now, he had read the many articles. They always covered the same old things. His childhood in the fishing villages of St Thomas’ Cove. His triumphant emergence on the tennis scene. His many humanitarian efforts around the world. And always the same picture. A young, jet black haired Dean, with the cyan and gold Licentian flag draped over his shoulders, crying tears of joy.

His hair was greying now. He was losing stamina by the day, and he often woke up with hooting pains in his legs. But Oliver Dean not only found trouble playing because of physical pain to contend with. No, there was a lot of emotional pain on top.

He had lost his father six months ago now. He died painlessly in his sleep, but it still had a massive effect on Oliver and his mother. He hadn’t recovered well, but his game had picked back up, as he knew his dad would have wanted him to continue playing. The wristband dedicated to his dad was still around his wrist when he walked onto court. On his return to the tour, Dean was greeted with a standing ovation, and a minute’s applause dedicated to his father. Another time that Dean cried.

Now, six months on, he was here. And he had an announcement to make. He straightened his tie, and walked into the packed press room.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement to make. For nearly 21 years, I have played tennis, representing my nation, and my home. But now, I have had a tough decision to make. It is with great sadness that I announce my retirement from tennis, effective following the Coby Cup and WTTC. It is not a decision I have taken lightly, but a nonetheless necessary one. I will not be taking any questions, thank you for your time.”

The press room fell silent. Dean walked out, and the room re-erupted in to a frenzy of scribbling, typing and phone calls. A shock to change the face of Licentian tennis forever.
This nation has now been reformed as the Licentian Isles. Please direct anything intended for me to that nation.

A disastrous start to the Coby Cup for Megadia, suffering a defeat by 3 sets to 1 in both the Doubles and Men's Singles, the only highlight being Princess Elizabeth Megadia IV's victory over Jade Shanson in straight sets, displaying her great sporting potential that also been on show in a couple events at the Olympics this year.

Megadia fared better in the World Team Tennis Cup however, narrowly defeating Free South Califas 3-2. Again, Prince Bartholomew Megadia II proved to be in bad form in the Men's Singles, having to battle extremely hard to emerge victorious from his 4 set match with Alex Mortenson before losing out in straight sets to Marwan Nasib Shamoun, who played very impressively in the first day of this cup. Luckily, Princess Elizabeth Megadia IV was able to inflict a second defeat on Alex Mortenson and Salvador Marquenas and Bartholomew Megadia's prolific doubles pairing managed to scrape through victorious and secure a 3-2 win for slightly rusty Megadian tennis team.

The camera pans to two men sitting down on the rectangluar desks facing each other and the camera. On the right is Davis Maury Tennis Analsyst and on the Left is ex-coach of Keigo Redfoot John Lewowski.

Mr. Maury: Welcome everyone to this years Coby cup

Mr. Lewowski: And the World Team Tennis Cup

Mr. Maury: For those of you who don't know the Coby cup is much different from most tournaments that ask for a male/female players. This Tournament makes the Male and Female player play individually and as a team. This would mean the brother/sister duo would have to play outside their comfort zone.

Mr. Lewowski: Yes but overall they did a pretty good job. Perinpanland won 2-1 against Megadia.

Mr. Maury: Yes, lets watch how this unravelled, starting with the James Shanson match against Batholomew Megadia.

The screen changes to the highlight reel of the match.

Here James is seen predominately on the left side of the court. He does win the first point and the score at that moment is 0-1. However Bartholomew recognizes Shanson's weakness and exploits it by returning the ball to the far back of the right side of the field before hitting the ball in the opposite direction. He continues to do this frustrating the young James Shanson. The Score would later be 5-2. Finally James starts playing the center, able to move right and left with ease and now moves up to smash the ball onto Bartholomew. The score is 5-3.

Mr. Lewowski: Yes, but sadly it was to little to late as Bartholomew won the first set for his country at 6-3.

Mr. Maury: yes, after the break his coach, which is also his father, ex-pro tennis player Roger Shanson, gave him a long talk before James returns to the court.

Mr. Lewowski: yes and look at how he has changed. It is like he is a totally different person. Able to play and control the playing field at any part of the tennis court. Look at this, He even is able to do a double volley winning the point making it 5-4. That was a close call. He volleys it, quickly recover to smash it onto the ground. This set's results were 6-3. Much like Megadia's win 3-6.

Mr. Maury: Yes the next two sets would be formidable play. Applying alot of pressure onto the racket, making the ball go far into the corners of the court and then as Bartholomew recovers, he smashes it onto the field. Like his father, he may be just like him. Just look at those plays. He is playing with his opponents mind and think three steps ahead. Tricking the oppenent and making him believe that he'll hit it in a certain way, at a certain direction but actually hits it the opposite way at the last second. Heck, he even confused me.

Mr. Lewowski: Yes the final result was a Perinpanland win; 3-6/6-3/6-2/6-0.

Mr. Maury: Now lets watch the next match between our own Jade Shanson and Elizabeth Megadia. THis one was really surprising.

The second Highlight reel goes on

Mr.Lewowski: Yes I mean look at the first set. Playing like her brother in the second set, she is able to play anywhere on the field. Just look at the two play, it would seem that they are evenly matched. Amazing! This set would come to a nail biter with the score 6-6 and it being 40-40 adv Jade. Jade would serve the ball to the corner of the corner but skillfully returned to the left side of the field. Jade returns it as she moves forward but Elizabeth returns the ball so high that it actually hit behind Jade. Deuce. In the end Elizabeth plays great, starting at the powelful yet tricky serves and moves up when she knows she can guarantee a win. The later sets, Jade would seem a little too confident and kept moving forward at the wrong times. SHe is clearly indiacting to her oppenent that she was ready for the smash and Elizabeth wasn't ready to give it to her. In the end it would be a Megadia win the score being 7-6/6-2/6-3. A terrible loss for Jade Shanson.

Screen back on the two hosts.

Mr. Maury: With the score being 1-1 it would be anyone's game. A quick tidbit of this match. This match would be a sibling vs sibling match. The Shansons VS The Megadias. The Shansons come from a father who is an ex-pro tennis player and the Megadias are from Royal Lineage. Let's watch the highlights.

Screen changes to the third reel of highlights

Like I mentioned Before, The Shansons are much more confident playing as a team. The ability to communicate with each other is amazing and at the same time spread out so that they have covered the whole field. With that being said they are also able to use their common sense to move where the other has left open and they do just that in the first two sets, winning both of them.

Mr. Lewowski: Yep and it shows. Look he returns Jade's overconfidence. Winning most of them making the score 3-1. She starts to play a little softer up front. Not thinking. Having her brother to fix her mistakes. THe score would be 3-5 before her brother wins the winning point volleying the ball up behind Jade and then Jade smashing it. The score would be 4-5. A little too late. During the break, it would seem that her brother was lecturing her on the game before it would seem that Jade has changed as well. Now she doesn't move all the way to the front but stay a little behind the net and retrieves everything her brother can not get. It is like an invisble line is made showing her where she is able to go. After a nailbiter where the score was 6-5 it was deuce adv Megadia. Jade had moved up for her winning smash but Elizabeth, thinking on her feet as usual, hits it far up. James had to go behind her and volley it up before Bartholomew returns it to the right side of the court. With no one there this might be a game changing point however Jade rushes to the right side of the court and returnes it straight to Elizabeth who hits it and is smashed by James. In the end the score is 6-1/6-3/4-6/7-5. After the match we got in touch with James Shanson.

Screen changes to a one-on-one interview with Mr. Maury and James Shanson after the game

Mr. Maury: Were all wondering, what did you say to Jade after the third set

James Shanson: Well, I basically told her that there is a reason why I won and she didn't in the singles round

Mr. Maury: Wow? any comment and todays games.

James Shanson: Well, I think they played there best I mean, they put up a fight scaring us and I have a great feeling that they would win their next match. Together the played great and alone they play equally as good which is something we need to work on.

Mr. Maury: thank you

Mr. Lewowski: If you are just catching this now, we are summarizing todays World Team Tennis Matches. Our Perinpanland team has sent different players then in the Coby Cup so that they wouldn't tire themselves out and practice on what they've learnt about themselves after their matches. Today Perinpanland plays Thatius who won their matches against Camwood 2-1. Their teamwork is incredible and I feel that their star player is Lydia Harleck. [Screen shows a reel of her best plays in the Coby Cup] Our two singles players played two matches against their two singles players followed by a doubles match in the end. Lets Watch. Yes see our first match is Ibrahim Ikajovich facing Rob Djokic. This game just scared me.

Screen changes to the highlight reel of this match

Mr. Maury: Yes off from the bat Djokic plays a powerful game. Putting fear into Ikajovichs eyes. Most of these shots were hard to return but in the end they were done. Ibrahim is a prodigy afterall. In a nailbiting first set the score was 7-6 Perinpanland.

Mr. Lewowski: Yes, but here is where I am confused. Djokic plays a totally different game. He's hitting lightly at first but then powerful in the end. At first after Ikajovich gets used to his playing style it is 2-4. But then Djokic plays a different game and destroy Ikajovichs mentality with the score being 2-6.

Mr. Maury: After a talk with his coach, he was told not to underestimate Djokic. He was told not to think and only return. This is exactly what he does. He doesn't move forward but stays in a spot where he is able to control all the hits. Whens its powerful, he returns with an equally powerful shot and with it is hit lightly he volleys it or smashes it up front. The final score of this would be 7-6/2-6/6-3/6-1. [Screen changes to the highlight reel of this match] On His second match he plays Vittoria Panaro. From the get go he underestimates her since she would be stereotypically weaker and that proves to be his downfall. Showing signs of pity he doesn't go in at full blast. This results in his loss in the first set; 3-6.

Mr: Lewowski: He is told to always play a game 120%. Which he does. Playing as if he was playing Djokic, he wins the next two sets.

Mr. Maury: This is a funny moment. Panaro decides to also play 100% Here she goes all out. She confuses us all. This must be her gameplan. She wants you to get used to her playing style before she changes it up. Sadly, it doesn't Faze Ikajovich for too long making the final score 3-6/6-4/6-4/2-6/6-4. The next person is Rafael Moore. He is overly competitive with his team mate Ibrahim Ikajovich. In fact he plays the exact same match Ikajovich played against Vittoria Panaro and Rob Djokic. [Screen changes to the highlight reel of this match] The only difference is that Djokic plays a slightly different game alternating at a random pattern confusing Moore. Luckily Moore wins his two matches.

Mr. Lewowski: In the doubles. It was a different story. They were too close but not close enough. They weren't able to return Keigos serves but our team weren't able to return their tricky shots in the end.

Screen changes to the two hosts

Mr. Maury: Yes overall however, it was a good day for Perinpanland. Winning the matches for the Coby Cup and the World Team Tennis Tournament. They played against challenging oppenets and came out victorious. I think the only thing they need to work on his Jade Shansons attitude, Rafael and Ibrahims sportmanship and Keigo/Snakes compatibilities. What do you think the outcomes would be?

Mr. Lewowoski: IF the fix all their problems, I think Semi-Finals You?

Mr. Maury: They may make it to the finals if everything works out!

Mr.Lewowski: Alright and that is all for this for now, see you tomorrow! This program has been brought to you by G&P Root Beer, stay strong my friends!

Coby Cup Off to Exciting Start as All Ties Come Down to Doubles
RODDEN'S SHOCKING LOSS A RESULT OF NERVES; POOR WARMUP AHEAD OF CHAMPIONSHIP-WORTHY SHOWDOWN

BNS | EMBERTON, Krytenia | Brandon Rodden played a sluggish opening two sets versus the unknown Ambrose Vega. And while that might not matter in perhaps a CCC Entry tournament, this was the first match of the Coby Cup - the successor to the historic Scott Cup, played entirely in his own nation. It took him an hour and a half to recognize that, but once Rodden did, he knew how to turn on the gas. He dropped just two games in the next two sets, and it seemed like he had decisively put this debutante back in his rightful place. But Rodden was shaken by his rough start; he lacked the swagger that had won him the last two CCC Masters tournaments. He eventually admitted the culprit of his 6-4 final set defeat was nerves.

For someone who has never represented his country in international play, for someone whose rise to the top of the tennis world has been rapid, that's totally understandable. However, there's little time to battle nerves as the Coby Cup continues. The Citiz' next tie is versus Thatius - home to the world's current top two players. While one isn't participating, the other, Vittoria Panaro, is anchoring the Thatian team, along with rising player Rob Djokić. This matchup is worthy of being the Coby Cup final, but losing would hurt either team's chances of progressing to the knockout stage.

So Rodden, ranked third in the latest rankings, has to swallow the butterflies and play at the level he's capable of. "You know, as good a player as Rob is, I do believe I'm going into this match the favorite," Rodden said about the upcoming men's singles match. "I believe my success this season hasn't been a fluke. One bad match, it hurts, it hurts, you know, but we won, and I've gotta put it behind me and just focus on what should be a good match with Rob."

Indeed, despite Rodden's loss, Civil Citizenry defeated Boyznichov, completely unheard of in the tennis world. Chelsea Farnell - making her third appearance in this tournament, which includes the Scott Cup - had some shoulder trouble and was taken to five sets by Aubrey Golden before dispatching of another no-name challenger. Then Rodden and Farnell paired up and, although dropping a lazy third set, had little trouble clinching the tie. While Farnell's injury is troubling, she said afterwards that with some massaging, antibiotics, and rest, the injury probably won't linger too long. Certainly, it will be critical for her to be at the top of her game as she challenges the world number one, Vittoria Panaro, in the Thatius tie.

Mr. Maury: Well, second round is over and I say they did great. Don't you agree?

Mr.LewowskiYes we won both our games. In the Coby cup we played the everstrong team Bergnovinaia and defeated them 2-1. Just like the Megadia matches, Jade shown here [A highlight reel of Jades match] seems to have trouble controlling her court but manages to not get carried away as it shows in the doubles match with her brother here [Shows highlights of the doubles match []

[A highlight reel of Jades match]

Mr. Maury[b] Well, actually she does try to come out strong in the third and fourth set delaying the victory of ms. Elizabeth Brown, in fact she wins a set 1-6. However that only tired her our allowing for the last set to be one by Brown 6-2.

[Shows highlight reel of doubles match]

[b]Mr. Lewowoski:
In the doubles match they are more compatible and less eager. Their nerves were calmed and as a result the won all three sets.

Mr. Lewowski: Hi, and welcome back I'm your host John Lewowski

Mr. Maury: And I'm Davis Maury

Mr. Lewowski: In the Coby Cup Perinpanland wins with another victory and here in the World Cup it is no different winning 5-0.

Mr. Maury:WOW! Amazing! I mean I know they are good but this just tops the cake! Who'd they play?

Mr. Lewowski: Well, today they played against Cotdelapoms. This was the first game for that team as this is an uneven group.

Mr. Maury: Lets start with Ibrahim Ikajovich [the screen changes to the highlight reel of Ikajovich's matches] Last time we mentions that Ikajovich underestimates his oppenents. Has that changed?

Mr. Lewowski: Well against Joakim Picard he doesn't show any restraint and slips up on the hard fought third set. But in the end he won. In the match against Marie-Josée Giroux, you can see he strains his muscle trying to return the ball at the end of the third set. He would be forced to play with his right hand which is weaker and less expierienced. but in the end he fought hard and prevailed at the end winning in the 5th set.

Mr. Maury: Alright now with Rafael Moore. We said that his goals would be to do better them Ikajovich in these matches. He would first face Marie-Josée Giroux. [the screen changes to the highlight reel of moore's matches] As you could see he doesn't give it his all but he does give enough to try and win this. Like I said his main goal is to save up his power for the second match where he can face ikajovichs first opponent. I mean look at this, he doesn't even make an effort to return it after the ball was hit to the right corner. In his second game He would face Joakim Picard who Ikajovich defeated after 4 sets. Moore's goal would be to beat him in a far more superior way.

Mr. Lewowski: And it shows, I mean loot at that, he is playing 120%. He is playing 'till the last drop of sweat. He was so close to winning on the third set but lost after deuce. He quickly retrieves his loss and defeats Picard 6-0 in the final set. I don't know about you but I think Moore did a better job at defeating Picard then Ikajovich did.

Screen back on our hosts

Mr. Maury: I agree. And now for the doubles match it would be Keigo Redfoot/Snake Smithers vs Antoine Desrochers/Fabrice Desrochers another sibling team. We know that sibling teams are far more superior then normal doubles. I mean the compatibility and teamwork are unstoppable whereas our doubles team lacked compatibility.

Mr. Lewowski: Yes, however it would seem that, that flaw would disappear in this game. [Screen changes to the doubles match ] Using Keigo's power and Snakes reflexes they played in perfect synchronization. They even taunted the opponent for a bit. Allowing them to score the first point and even the second point to get a feel of how they play. They would be able to manipulate their oppenent's mind an defeat them in a clean three sets.

Screen changes back to the hosts

Mr. Maury: Alright let's start with the Coby Cup. James Shanson is 2-0 in this cup while Jade is 0-2 in this cup. However in the doubles they are 2-0. I think Jade would need to work with her brother and even play against her brother more to get a feel of this tournament. When playing together I guessed they fixed her attitude problem and they may now work in sync.

Mr. Lewowski: Yes that would definantly be needed. Perinpanland has 2 wins in this tournament so far. Meanwhile in the World Cup, Ibrahim Ikojovich is 4-0. Playing perfectly he has learnt from his past mistakes and plays to his hearts content. He would need to rest his arm for a bit if he doesn't want to rip the muscle tissue. Rafael Moore is also 4-0. He needs to focus on removing his emotions from this game. He is worrying to much on Ikajovich's results and not enough on his own game. He is highly competitive which is good for his tournament but not against his own team mate. Those two would always fight for the first and second best pick in Perinpanland. Keigo Redfoot and Snake Smithers are so far 1-1. Fixing all their flaws in the past round they are able to to play in perfect sync with Redfoot in the back and Smithers in the front.

Mr. Maury: Perinpanland is also 2-0 in this tournament. Here are what the players of the tournament have to say. First would be with Coach Shanson.

Screen changes to the interview right outside the court.
Mr. Lewowski: Alright so far you have led Perinpanland 2-0 in this tournament, any comment?

Coach Shanson: Well, James has been playing formidable and we've finally broken the attitude problem Jade had like you said. We can't be over-confident and both of my players know that. We all expect the worse since this is our first international tournament. Jade is just a little too happy at times! I would like to say that both of my players are playing the best they can and I am really proud of them. They have even surprised me.

Mr. Lewowski: Speaking of Jade, she is 0-2 in the tournament when it comes to singles matches. Where do you think the problem lies?

Shanson: Well, she just needs to get a feel of playing by herself and not relying on anyone else. We need to find out what she is missing in her tennis abilities and train that specifically. She plays great in doubles matches but lacks certain skills in singles matches which we will train her on. She will be practising with her brother on a one-on-one match to better train them both.

Mr. Lewowski: Thank you for your time and good luck on the next match

Shanson: Thanks

Screen changes back to the two hosts

Mr. Maury: It looks like he is on the right track, Well I have just received word that Ikajovich's injury is nothing severe and just a minor strain. He will be back by tomorrow's match in tip top shape. He would be resting it now.

Mr. Lewowski: Only time will tell, and we will tell you all tomorrow on Day 3. Thank you for watching! The Screen fades to black as car rolls in. Tonights segment is brought to you buy Royal Luxury Vehicles, Drive like a king!

OOC: you might want to TG them!
