Vilita & Turori record Best Team Finish

Vilitan driver Lake Suzgar finished in the top 5 and Turori's iBen Toralmintii finished 6th as Vilita & Turori motorsports were competitive throughout the Arthur 400. While Suzgar and Toralmintii used consistency throughout the night to finish near the top of the leaderboard, it was Klianiota who led 17 laps before an issue relegated the youngster to a disappointing 17th place finish.

Vilita & Turori Motorsports will now look ahead to the HorusLand 400 where iBen Toralmintii is sure to be one of the favorites with the new-found speed of the Vilita & Turori program.

Toralmintii, known as an expert on road courses through his driving school based at the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course, has a lot to prove despite a decent first NSSCRA season and big 6th place finish in the Arthur 400.

After confusion surrounding the schedule during NSSCRA 4, the inaugural Challenge at the Rocks race at the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course finally arrived any nobody felt they head a better read on the facility than Toralmintii. Unfortunately, from the second they rolled off the truck, the Vilita & Turori motorsports vehicles were underpowered and overwhelmed. In fact, home track specialist Toralmintii was slowest in the opening practice session couldn't even break the top 30 in qualifying.

Luckily, Toralmintii's reputation was not harmed too much by the performance but a repeat showing in NSSCRA 5 could mean bad things for his reputation as being omnidirectional, and, for his driving academy as well.

Calhoun Takes Pole - For the second week in a row, it will be an all-Havl front row. Hank Calhoun stormed to pole position in the #19 Western Motorsports Forza with a lap time of 2:01.658. Calhoun's compatriot Austin Praffright (#15) lapped just five hundredths of a second behind to qualify second. Jack Arroway will start from fifth, fresh off of his debut win in Aberdeen last weekend. The pole marks Calhoun's first start from the front row, and the first P1 for Forza and Western Motorsports.

Qualifying for the first running of the HorusLand 400 saw a surprisingly close field, with the top twenty drivers lapping within one second of Calhoun's pole time. "It's a beautiful and challenging circuit," said Praffright. "Back home we're racing on road courses every week, so I just sort of feel almost as at home here as I felt at Aberdeen." The NSSCRA drivers were quick to come to terms with the 14-turn road course settled in HorusLand's scenic hill country. Practice, qualifying, and Happy Hour saw no major incidents, with the exception of Craig McClendon, who failed to set a lap in qualifying.

Image
Calhoun scored his first career pole position at Road America in HorusLand.

Calhoun was thrilled after his mid-session lap held out as more experienced drivers took to the track. "I was really worried when [Lien] Murakami and the Whitt brothers went out," said Calhoun. "I knew mine was a good lap, but everyone was putting up faster and faster times." Defending series champion Lien Murakami (#2) was fastest in the first sector before putting a tire off track in the Kink. Lake Suzgar (#14) looked to have the fastest lap before crossing the line with a third-best lap.

Calhoun made use of Arthur Motorsports' satellite-mapped simulator to learn the Road America's layout. "The sim gives you some of the visual cues that you need," said Calhoun. "It's no substitute for the real thing, but it gives you a head start on what ends up being a very short weekend. It helps me a lot, especially at the road courses." Arthur Motorsports' SuperFormula division offered the use of its satellite-mapped simulator to the trio of Havl drivers, and they spent much of the week lapping virtual Road America. "There's no G forces, though," said Arroway. "And as many times as you drive over the frontstretch hill, there's nothing like that feeling in your gut when you bottom out on the real circuit."

Image
Crew chief Rob Melbourne watches Calhoun's lap.

Following a career-best third-place finish at Aberdeen, Calhoun is slow to make predictions for tomorrow's race. "It's a long race for a road course," said Calhoun. "We're used to doing 200-milers on Havl's road courses. Whoever wins tomorrow will probably be the guy who can keep his car going for 400 miles." Calhoun's crew chief, Rob Melbourne, is slightly more optimistic. "Yeah, it's a long one," said Melbourne. "It's a long one, but we think the car can handle it." NSSCRA has made it clear that they want to avoid high-attrition races like last season's Drake's Dash, which saw only six drivers finish the nearly 500-mile race.

With more road courses on the schedule this season, the HorusLand 400 gives drivers the first opportunity to prove their mettle turning left and right. "There's more emphasis on [road courses] this year," said Praffright. "So it's important to use every opportunity to make the car better for Yemigama and Vilita later in the season." HorusLand drivers Marco Rossini (#96) and Altaan Asudai (#36) will be hoping to turn their first-hand knowledge of Road America into an advantage. The series rookies will start 20th and 24th respectively. The action begins tomorrow with flag-to-flag coverage of the HorusLand 400 at Road America on HTVM.

Road Track Woes? Or Finding a Groove?

With the HorusLand 400 coming up, Olympia Racing's Kristian Lidstrom was looking to find himself in much better position than the Arthur 400. However, this next race is a road course and they have never been one to treat Kristian well. After one practice, Lidstrom was placing dead last. His past seemed to ring true in that one run.

Qualifying still didn't treat him any better. He ended up 37th. 11 places worse than his Artur 400 qualifying position of 26th. This was however, an improvement upon his opening practice.

Happy Hour proved to be a good omen for the Vauganian rookie. He leaped 14 places up to 23rd. The same finish he had last week. Hopefully this trend will continue and he will be able to leave the track with a decent finish heading into next week. We will be looking to see if 37th position dooms him to failure, or if he has finally found a groove.

GREG WOODARD TAKES FIRST WIN DURING THE HORUSLAND 400, MOVES UP TO 2ND IN POINT STANDINGS.

Image

Greg Woodard, the driver of the #41 Lycoia Interceptor, took home the win after leading the most laps in the race. Woodard was glad to be in victory lane after the second race of the season. He also celebrated as Sarah Xaiver, a rookie, took a top 10 for the team, followed by Michael Dougly, who finished in 17th place. Woodard claimed the team was in top-notch shape during the race, that they didn't waste the training they went through. The car was superb as well. All the drivers finished in the top 20, all on the lead lap. Woodard has moved up to 2nd in the point standings after the race. Xaiver is now 3rd for the ROTY championship. Michael Dougly is currently sitting in 14th in points, followed by Xavier. The team now stand 4th in team points and Lycoia is on it's way to the manufacturer's championship, sitting one spot away in 2nd.

Rossini and Asudai Advance at the HorusLand 400.

Marco Rossini knew Road America, and actually won some races there. Being familiar with the track gave him an advantage in the race, which, though not enough to win the race, got him at a much higher place, 11th place. Altaan Asudai also advanced, though only to 24th place.
It is fairly obvious that Rossini and Asudai will not get a high place in the final standings, as they admit that they only advanced in the HorusLand 400 because of it being a race track they were familiar with.
Even so, HorusLand racing fans support the two racers all the way.
A series of strange bipolar phenomena collectively known as adolescence, taking over a nation formerly terrorizing NSG as an awkward and slightly braindead child.

Woodard Wins in HorusLand - Greg Woodard took the lead on lap 42 and never looked back at the inaugural HorusLand 400 at Road America. The Sucrati driver earned his third NSSCRA victory by holding off a late charge from iBen Toralmintii (#77). The #41 Patriot Racing Lycoia was the car to beat, and Woodard ran a trouble-free race to move into second in the drivers' standings. Austin Praffright (#15) made the best of his front-row start to finish third.

Hank Calhoun (#19) led 36 laps from pole before contact with Woodard sent the Western Motorsports driver off course. Woodard was jostled back to fifth, and Calhoun rejoined in 30th. Calhoun spent the rest of the race trying to climb through the field. "We had a fast car today," said Rob Melbourne, Calhoun's crew chief. "We had a race-winning car today, but that's racing, and qualifying doesn't guarantee anything." The #19 Western Forza finished a disappointing 21st. Calhoun couldn't be reached for comment.

Image
Calhoun led early in the race.

Praffright managed to stay with the lead pack through the 120-lap race. "The Arthur was really stable all day," said Praffright. "It's a great sign that we can finish in the top five last week at an oval and again this week on a road course." Despite having the best average finish in NSSCRA, Praffright is languishing in third behind Jack Arroway and Woodard in the drivers' standings. "You have to win races in this series to have a chance at the title," said Praffright. "So we're looking ahead to get the #15 into victory lane."

Arroway holds onto the lead in the drivers' championship on the strength of an eighth-place finish in HorusLand. "It was a long, long race today," said Arroway. "But we had some good luck, maybe leftover from last week." The Western Motorsports driver has already matched his total of two top ten finishes from last season, and won the season opener to start the season strong. "We're on a roll right now," said Arroway. "We're going to try to get some more wins in the #91 Shrubs Light Forza before the season's over."

Image
An exasperated Melbourne after Calhoun's off.

A record crowd filled the stands at Road America for the first-ever running of the HorusLand 400. The fans got quite a show as four drivers swapped the lead seven times. Local racer Marco Rossini fell just short of a top ten finish, but ran as high as eighth in front of his home crowd. Rossini's teammate Altaan Asudai matched his 24th qualifying position and finished on the lead lap less than two minutes behind the leaders.

Arthur leads the manufacturer's championship following the HorusLand 400, but Lycoia is just one point behind. Arthur is fielding a single car this season after Chip Tression suffered a minor heart attack in the week leading up to the season opener in Aberdeen, Havl. The Havl-based manufacturer has announced that the #51 Arthur will not race this year, but hopes are high that Tression will return next season. Next week, NSSCRA heads to the action-filled confines of Bristol Motor Speedway. The action begins next week with flag-to-flag coverage of the Youtabonia 200 on HTVM.

Nickeys's Woes Continue; Finishes in the back of the pack

Michael Nickeys has always struggled on road courses. But he's never done this bad.

Nickeys was slow throughout the week, culminating in a 33rd-place finish.

The struggling #4 team is in need of a rehash in strategy, according to crew chief Armando Peterson. "We were expecting to dominate, week in and week out. At the very least, we should be vying for the ROTY title. Unfortunately, we're not living up to our expectations. We probably should have been more careful. We'll only get better as the season goes along, but for now, we've got to change our race plan."

Fernando Yuma had some moderate success, and was able to scrape up a 22nd place finish. "I'm not happy with the way we're performing. If things don't pick up soon, I'll blow a gasket. Figuratively, I mean." Yuma's frustration with his pit crew is at a boiling point.

Congratulations to Greg Woodard of Sucrati for winning this week's race.

Zach Whitt Secures Pole in Youtabonia - It looks like The Funkmaster has the car to beat. The #56 Whittoria Engineering Tuttle will start from pole in NSSCRA's first visit to Youtabonia's Bristol Motor Speedway. The elder Whitt brother showed his short-track prowess by dominating the weekend’s pre-race sessions, setting the fastest times in practice, qualifying, and Happy Hour. Austin Praffright (#15) was less than a tenth of a second behind Whitt in qualifying. The lone Arthur driver is still looking for his maiden NSSCRA victory, but has put together the series’ best finishing record this season.

Tomorrow's race marks a change of venue for the series' annual visit to Youtabonia, which last year hosted a 400-mile race at the massive Cinigrad National Speedway. The new circuit is a polar opposite of Cinigrad's 3-mile, unplated cathedral of speed. But Bristol's tightly-banked 0.533 mile track should provide great action as the field battles for inches on the asphalt. Last year’s race saw a staggering 53 lead changes among eleven drivers. Previous non-NSSCRA races at Bristol have proven to be high attrition slugfests that have delighted race fans.

Image
Praffright’s will start beside the Funkmaster on the front row.

Praffright was excited to earn another front row start, his third in three races. “Don’t start calling me ‘Front Row Joe,’ or you’ll jinx me,” said Praffright. The Davenport native opened the season with his first-ever pole position and has qualified second in the last two races. “Qualifying is important at every track,” said Praffright. “We’ve started up front at a speedway, a road course, and now a short track. If I can stay out of trouble, we might have a shot at another strong finish.”

Points leader Jack Arroway (#91) continued his streak of top-ten qualifying positions by setting the ninth-fastest lap. “We ran faster in practice yesterday,” said Arroway. “But hopefully we’ll have opportunities to move up to the lead.” Last week’s winner, Greg Woodard (#41), will start from a disappointing 28th place. “Maybe it’s early to be thinking about the championship,” said Arroway. “We’re trying to find that balance between going for the win and just playing it safe, [and] that can be really tricky.”

Image
Points leader Arroway will start from ninth place.

Following a disappointing 21st place finish in HorusLand, Hank Calhoun (#19) managed a meager 13th place qualifying effort today. “Qualifying is important, sure, but short tracks are all about raceday heroics,” said Calhoun. “I’ve won and lost short track races on the first lap, so I’m just going to have to scrounge for opportunities in the race.” Calhoun led all Havl-based drivers last year, but the former HWDC champion finds himself languishing behind his compatriots in eighth place in the standings. “I’ve been helping those guys a lot through the years,” said Calhoun. “Maybe I’ve been helping them too much.”

Hometown favorites Bailey Sawyer (#88) and rookie Craig McClendon (#81) are looking to impress the capacity crowd at the compact Bristol circuit. Sawyer will start from a promising eighth-place, while McClendon will line up 18th. The Chevrolet drivers will hope to make the best of their local know-how against the seasoned veterans and promising rookies of the NSSCRA. The action begins tomorrow with flag-to-flag coverage of the Youtabonia 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway on HTVM.

Nickeys looks to turn around luck at Bristol with new crew chief

Mike Nickeys has not had the greatest of years so far. After two 33rd-place finishes in a row, the New Matawanian idol has not performed up to his lofty expectations. However, a change of pace is on the way.

New crew chief Robin Aybar was hired last week after the #4 team arrived at home. Aybar, for those international folks, is an oldie-but-goodie mechanic who coached his drivers to 8 total championships in the NMSCS from 1979 to when the series concluded in 1999. In team owner Richard Getty's opinion, the stubborn Aybar is the best man to corral the equally stubborn Nickeys.

"It's like Tim Richmond and Harry Hyde back in '86. You've got the young, know-it-all bigwig driver and the old, cantankerous crew chief. It's a winning combination. It'll lead to some personality clashes in the short run, but I know from experience that it's a winning combination. If they both put in the work, of course, but everything takes time."

Armando Peterson, the former crew chief of the #4, got the news this Wednesday that he would be demoted to car chief. "I'm shocked, quite frankly," says Price. "I've worked with Nickeys since he's began his career." Peterson received the news when he waltzed in the garage, expecting to sit on the pit box. He was told directly by Aybar, someone who he didn't expect to see.

"I can't believe Getty would pull something like this. Sure, Nickeys is off to a rough start, but A., it's an international circuit, and B., Bristol is a track that he likes. We would have won this one."

Fernando Yuma, driver of the #40 team and fifth in ROTY standings, is off-put by Getty's decision to replace Peterson. Yuma has complained since April that his pit crew, crew chief Gregory Price in particular, has been sub-par. If Getty's willing to replace Peterson to help Nickeys, according to Yuma, why doesn't he replace Price?

"Personally, I'd love to have Peterson on board the #40," says Yuma. "We're good friends. He has a lot of talent that's wasted as car chief."

Results have already shown for Nickeys, who will start 15th in the race - his highest qualifying effort in NSSCRA history. Yuma did not have such luck, but he will not slip too far. He will start 29th.

Horusland 400 didn't go well for Komoda/ITV as Howara and Lidvine couldn't capitalize on this course. Howara was mostly decepcionated, believing that he could've got a better position. "I know I could've got a better place, man. It was on my hands." Kendo seems to believe more in the next stage at Youtabonia. "I ain't gonna give that shot away. For my chances here, I gotta go way better over there.", Lidvine seemed to be a little tired, but still laughed a little. "I'm not lying, like, you know, I have a big schedule. But, like, I can totally get better. I just need to try harder.". We from DE PLACE wish good luck for them at the next race.

56 Sits on Pole, 44 Fast in Happy Hour

As the World Championship returns to Youtabonia for a second year, Whittoria Engineering is off to a steady start. Three races into the season and both drivers are in the top 15 in points, and although there's not a strong presence in the manufacturer and team point standings both Zach and Alex Whitt are driving consistently. The only DNF of the season was Zach's wreck in Havl, where Alex finished in the top five; both drivers finished in the top ten in HorusLand, Alex sixth and Zach seventh.

But neither have a win, which is what Patriot Racing's Greg Woodard picked up last week on the challenging 4.048 mile circuit. In Youtabonia, though, both teams look poised to change that. In true Funkmaster fashion, Zach Whitt won the pole with a time of 15.823 seconds, just a half a tenth quicker than Austin Praffright, who will sit on the outside of the front row. Brother Alex will start back in 25th, but was quick in the final practice session. Both cars are expected to be near the front by the end of the day, and don't be surprised if Zach Whitt ends up winning this thing; he's a master on the short tracks. They don't call him the Funkmaster for nothing.

The Youtabonian Bullring has a knack for cautions though--and lots of them. And it holds no prejudice for any driver, rookie or veteran. The Youtabonian 200 will be a thrill to watch for sure.

Alex Whitt Wins in Youtabonia - Alex Whitt (#44) led a race-high 82 laps and dominated the Youtabonia 400 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Whittorian driver earned his third career NSSCRA victory by holding off Cassadaigua's Ashley Clarke (#24). Clarke climbed up through the field after starting the race second-last and earned the Meet the Challenge award. But the #44 Whittoria Engineering Tuttle didn't set a foot wrong all day, and the Mayor outraced his pole-winning brother to move into the lead in the drivers' standings. Rookie Todd Fields (#80) had a strong race to finish a career-high third place.

Austin Praffright (#15) looked strong in morning practice after qualifying second on Saturday. But the First International Bank-sponsored Arthur lasted only 21 laps before a cracked header took the Davenport native out of the race. "We've had great luck this season, so far," said Praffright. "I guess this is our luck running out, at least for one race. Hopefully we can keep qualifying up front and try to turn it into a victory before the season's over." The DNF knocked Praffright down to sixth in the drivers's standings behind race winners Jack Arroway (#91), Greg Woodard (#41), and Whitt.

Image
Praffright's engine let go after 21 laps.

Arroway started from ninth on the half-mile bullring, but soon complained of a vibration that rattled through the car. "I could tell something was wrong," said Arroway. "But we couldn't figure out what was wrong during pitstops." Despite the troubling signs, the Shrubs Light Forza survived a grueling 400-lap race that saw 13 cars fail to finish. Arroway brought the car home in 13th place, two laps behind the leaders. "We're thinking about the championship," said Arroway. "Sometimes that means taking a little longer during a pitstop to make sure the car's going to hold together. Luckily, today it did."

By finishing outside of the top ten, Arroway cedes the lead in the drivers' standings for the first time this season. Only points leader Whitt and fourth-ranked Clarke have more top tens with three apiece. Hank Calhoun (#19) continued his downward fall with a DNF in Youtabonia. The Western Forza's ignition failed on lap 180, leaving a frustrated Calhoun parked in the wrong pitlane. Once again, Calhoun was unavailable for comment, but crew members for the nearby #15 team claim to have heard a heated exchange between Calhoun and crew chief Rob Melbourne in the team's trailer.

Image
Arthur Motorsports released a photo of next year's NSSCRA Arthur.

Before the race, Arthur Motorsports' team principal Harris Reed announced that Arthur would produce an all-new racecar for next year's NSSCRA season. The announcement coincides with Arthur Automotive's planned introduction of a new model to replace the aging Arthur v4.0. "It's time for a new Arthur on the world's avenues," said Reed. "And that means we get a new Arthur to drive on the world's banked ovals and twisty tarmacs." Arthur Motorsports released a teaser photo of next year's challenger that showed the car's bare sheetmetal and fiberglass fascias.

A record crowd filled the stands at NSSCRA's debut at Youtabonia's Bristol Motor Speedway. As promised, the high-banked confines provided some slam-bang action. Hometown favorites Craig McClendon (#81) and Bailey Sawyer (#88) finished 11th and 27th respectively. Although this year's race saw only 11 lead changes to last year's 53, the general consensus on pitlane was that the Bristol should stay on the calendar next year. Next week, NSSCRA travels to the high speed Camwood National Speedway for the Camwood 500. The action begins next week with flag-to-flag coverage of the Youtabonia 200 on HTVM.

Suzgar Wins Compolis 500 - Lake Suzgar had a fast car, and nothing could stop his late charge to victory in the Compolis 500 at Camwood National Speedway. The #14 took Vilita & Turori Motorsports' first victory of the season. Polesitter Jack Arroway (#91) looked to have the race in hand after leading laps in the middle stages, but Suzgar moved ahead and built a sizable lead after the last pit stop. The Vilitan driver earned his first NSSCRA victory and moved up to third in the drivers' standings. Zach Whitt (#56) finished third to earn his first top-five finish of the season.

Hank Calhoun (#19) led a race-high 157 laps before contact with former teammate Austin Praffright (#15) ended his race. Calhoun has suffered a string of poor finishes in the last three races, spinning out of the lead in HorusLand and failing to finish in Youtabonia. "It's really tough," said Calhoun in a rare post-race interview. "We've had the fastest car for four races, and all we have to show for it is a third-place at Aberdeen." Rob Melbourne, Calhoun's crew chief, said that Calhoun's title chances are slim, but the team is still in the hunt. "A few more races like this, and we'll have to start thinking about next year," said Melbourne. "Our main concern is getting the #19 Western Forza into victory lane."

Arroway led a hard-charging lead pack midway through the race.

Suzgar and Arroway started to pull away late in the race, and they were the only two cars on the lead lap when the checkered flag fell. It was clear at Camwood that the lead pack was noticeably faster than the rest of the field. The lead changed 18 times among six drivers. Attrition was high at the 1.5 mile banked oval, with 22 cars failing to finish the 330-lap race. Clarke, Praffright, Calhoun, and Danielle Pearson (#48) led at different times before falling out of the hunt.

Arroway holds a narrow lead over Alex Whitt (#44) in the drivers' championship on the strength of his second-place finish. The Mayor lost his clutch with less than fifty laps to go and finished 21st. "These 500-milers are tough," said Arroway. "If we'd ended 40 or 50 laps earlier, I might have held [Suzgar] off." The Western Motorsports driver has finished in the top ten in three of the last four races, with his lowest finish being last week's 13th place in Youtabonia. "We're trying to keep the top-tens and top-fives coming," said Arroway. "And I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few wins left in the #91 Shrubs Light Forza this year."

Arthur Motorsports released another teaser of next year's car masked and primered.

Fans jammed the stands at Camwood National Speedway for the third running of the NSSCRA race. This year, the race increased from 450 to 500 miles, and the fans got quite a show. Local racer Jason Rand (#99) crashed his VLT on lap 77. Rand hit the Turn 1 wall at high speed, but walked away from the wreck without injury. The Camwood native ran as high as 20th before the DNF sent him to 31st. Still, the Camwood fans were vocally supportive of their hometown hero, and the track's PA system was inaudible over the roar of his pre-race introduction.

Forza leads the manufacturer's championship following the Camwood 500, but Tuttle and Volpi are just one and two points behind. Arthur Motorsports formally announced plans to field a multiple-car team next season. Insiders expect the Capital City-based team to go after former Arthur drivers Arroway and Calhoun. It it rumored that HNDC champion Chip Tression might return to NSSCRA competition after his year-long sabbatical. Next week, NSSCRA heads to wide open banking of Hoovana Community Speedway. The action begins next week with flag-to-flag coverage of the Marxist Equine 800k on HTVM.
