Awww, our Taeshan gone and all growed up! Like some sort of Michael Owen pre- and post-that goal against Argentina in the '98 World Cup, you can look on everything before this point as a boy, and from now on a man.

Having just got back from Poland about half an hour ago, I've only just seen the standings. MY OOC reaction is to say not only "OMFGWTFBBQ, how random is this scorinator if a Roster+1-RP nation ranked in the mid-100s can get a pretty even win/loss record at the halfway stage?" but also "OMFG this is awesome!" too.

The IC reaction for the nation is more like "See, we always told you we were naturally that good".

Strangely enough, Allen is about a week younger than I am. Makes you wonder about the paths not taken when rich and famous sports stars are your age or younger (not that Jared Allen is famous to me, of course, I needed to google him).

I'm not the type to 'boast' of "Duuuude, I was soooo drunk...", but that was a lot of vodka. And dancing, and singing, and eating and general awesomeness. I highly recommend Polish-style weddings.

But how am I still second in Group 12? Did 'Call us Starblaydi' get C&M-on-their-most-inspired-day-ever levels of bonus or is the home advantage something to really be feared in this cup?

Does anyone know who I replaced?

Also I lost 5-0 to Jeru FC. Sure was freaking expected - my first away loss of the campaign, and also my heaviest-ever defeat. My players will have nightmares about today's match for years to come.

Slembana, you replaced Catocton.

As for me, I'm down to third. I knew it couldn't last, and the back half of qualifying is trickier in terms of home and away fixtures, so it's either going to be resignation to being third or praying for Milchama to slip up. Only one point in it, at least.

Hm. I seem to be rambling.

Good afternoon, everyone! (I'm from the UK)

I've just worked out that the first NS World Cup was held from July-September 2002 - but I don't think I'm right. Actually, I don't think NationStates even existed then, never the WC. Can someone tell me when it actually started?

Actually, I'm 99% certain 2002 was around the time NS was started. Back in high school, I had some friends who were crazy into that stuff (of course, I was introduced sometime in college by a high school friend). As for the inaugural NSWC, reading the NSwiki article, "The NationStates World Cup is NationStates' longest-running recurring sporting event, dating back to the first half of 2003."

Yeah, I was sure about 2002, but not July. I know that the WC started in 2003 - I just did January-March, March-May, May-July, July-September, September-November, November-January (next year), working backwards from this year. Where have I gone wrong?

Earlier competitions contained fewer teams, so they took less time to complete.

But I'm sure they all had 32 teams from the start, didn't they?

Also will the system that I used (WCs starting in Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep, Nov every year) be right?

EDIT: WC1 had no qualifying, so does it depend on how many teams take part?

I think so, although I wasn't around in the early days myself, but the first couple of competitions only had 32 teams each signed-up and consequently had no qualifying stage before the actual World Cup itself... and even after that it took a while for the numbers of teams trying to qualify to reach current levels.

There is no firm system even in the short term, much less the long term. The one constant is the 32 teams in the tournament proper with group stages and knockouts. The greatest variable is the qualifying period which has inevitably lengthened as fields have swelled. My first tournament as WC host was WC 49 with 137 teams, at that time an all time record. No World Cup has been so small since. Five tournaments later we had 169 in WC 54 (and there had been two fields of 182 in between), and six tournaments after that we had 194 in WC 60. We now routinely average double the field size of the later Jolt-hosted Cups before NS started hosting its own forum in May 2009. That takes longer.

The first World Cup - and I'm the last active participant from that tournament - began no earlier than March 2003 (or thereabouts); it couldn't have started any earlier because that's when this nation was founded.

In the first two World Cups, the first 32 nations to sign up were automatically accepted into the tournament.

Seeing as the current World Cup doesn't finish until September 10th It iis more than likely that the next won't start until late November. We need some breathing space inbetween for tournaments such as Di Bradini, the regionals, Cuppet, etc

I guess hats off you too, dude. I read on NSWiki that you were a "shock" finalist. Also, you and AIF (the Holy Empire) were in the same group as each other in qualifying.
