Undeniably Loquacious Otters Raid Audioslavian Imports Consortium

Talking otters were observed in large congregations evidently to upset local Audioslavian Imports Consortium. Phatic discussions ensued when otters left behind trout, which forced evacuation of entire facility. 16 fatalities resulted soon after riots broke out following news of Han defeat in Brevity Cup.

The NMS Ministry of Morale is pleased to announce the Paladins' roster for the second Brevity Cup. Head coach Jacques-Modeste Taschereau will be trying to strike a balance between young, fresh legs and the veterans of the Paladins' successful qualification in World Cup 59. New faces will be given some playing time, but most of the core of the NMS side will be taking the pitch in Kukalaya. Expect some uncertain play between unfamiliar teammates, but for all their communication issues they've tremendous upside potential. Rank of 6

All ages are for the BCC and represent the midpoint between WC 59 and WC 60
Formation: 2-6-2
Style: Taschereau's version of the 2-6-2 plays as a +2
Coaches: Jacques-Modeste Taschereau, age 61, head coach; Ernie McGonagall, age 46, strikers; Norman Lajoie, age 50, midfield; Paul-Simon Smithson, age 46; Étienne Lajeunesse, age 48, keepers

Oblique strategy - water - Water is everywhere and fills all things, much like a good midfield passing game ought to do. Water wears at and dissolves everything, much like a good midfield defense ought to do. We need to (figuratively) hold opposing midfielders heads under water until they break and cough up some goals.

KEEPERS in 50 words

1 Édgar Thibault, age 33, FC Sandside, Civil Citizenry
91 Marcel Johnstone-Beaumont, age 27, Unité Chateauguay
4 Ernie Busey, age 26, NM Patriotes

Steady as she goes in the net for the Paladins, who return all three keepers from the WC 59 side. Édgar Thibault continues to be the 'States lone representative abroad, and a mainstay in net for the Paladins since WC 56. At 33, he shows no sign of slowing down, and remains popular.

DEFENSE

76 William St. John de la Ware, CB, age 28, Sorel Black Dragons, 1 goal
18 Jeremy Steelman, CB age 27, Répentigny War Eagles
24 Hubert Séguin-Holmes, age 23, NM Patriotes
3 Georges-Marcel Potvin, age 22, City of New Montreal, 0 goals

Cory Taylor has finally ridden off into the sunset, and been replaced by Jeremy Steelman, who promises to be a more than adequate replacement. William St. John de la Ware, now known as the "Warrior Poet of Sorel," mixes devastating tackles on the pitch and intellectual pursuits off of it.

MIDFIELD

78 Martin Kennedy, RDMF, age 25, Unité Chateauguay, 0 goals
8 Neil Poussin, RDMF, age 24, NM Patriotes, 0 goals
0 Hank Bay, CMF, age 23, CF Valdemont, 0 goals
40 Pwim Charbonneau, LMF, age 28, City of New Montreal, 5 goals
27 Benoit Gallagher, RMF, age 26, Alliance Sportif Ville-Marie, 2 goals
49 Guillaume Ouillemet, AMF, age 30, Philemon Mariners, 15 goals
50 Fred Moseley, CMF/LMF/DMF, age 21, Moncton Sands Coyotes, 0 goals
20 Yann Chrétien, CMF/DMF, age 25, NM Patriotes, 0 goals
12 André Vaillancourt-Bosquet, AMF/RMF, age 33, St. James Seagulls, 11 goals
11 Alphonse Bélanger, CMF/LMF, age 22, St. James Seagulls, 0 goals
54 Fabrice Sévérin, RMF/LMF, age 20, Laval, 0 goals
29 Donald Taylor, CMF/LMF/RMF/AMF, age 24, CF Sherbrooke, 1 goal

Hank Bay and Neil Poussin forced their way into the starting lineup, while a youth movement is waiting on the bench. The venerable André Vaillancourt-Bosquet can still provide offense from the bench, as well as teaching the younger players a thing or two about the pace of the international game.

STRIKERS

6 Rhéal Ackersley, CF, age 27, CF Valdemont, 18 goals
11 Linus Wiseman, SS, age 22, Unité Chateauguay, 0 goals
3 Loic Bacon, CF/SS, age 28, NM Patriotes, 10 goals
12 Andy Lavalle, age 23, Philemon Mariners, 0 goals

Injury-prone Bacon benched in favor of Linus Wiseman, who claims his massive Afro will make his headers "like knuckleballs" and is currently the fastest players in the NMS. Ackersley, meanwhile, will be looking to stake his claim as one of the best players in the world going into World Cup 60.

Unbelievably, long passages of attacking play did not produce goals. Equestrian States held on for surprise draw. Poetry in motion required for next game against team with even longer name. "Brevity Challenge Cup" name now sounding spectacularly ironic. Subversion through loquaciousness facilitates outside prospect of astonishing Chelsea-esque passage to glory.
Out of international isolation and... winning things? Huh?

Evidently, phatic exchanges between Liventian players on the field of play only serve to improve player performances. Two goals past Civil Citizenry as players exchanged pleasantries before Grant's freekick and Garner's penalty appear to prove this, although it's not much to be said for the Route One football previously promised.

"Mugged! You're flipping mugging us here ref!" came the squeal from Dermott McLean as the referee trotted towards the dugout.

With a flourish towards a stands, the man in black gestured to McLean.

Was he...? Yes, he was sending the manager off.

"Bloody hell ref, I was only being phatic."
I'm not on the Greenwich Meridian so my time is a few seconds behind. Bear that in mind.

"Simple play lads, nice, tika taka, one two, bobs your uncle."

"What the fuck are you on about, Graham?"

"I'm trying to be phatic."

"What's 'phatic'?"

"To convey a social task rather than information."

"Stop using online dictionaries Graham."

"I must contest your accusation. To put it bluntly, fuck off."

Kept in Coach's notebook, a yellow sticky-note reads:

Against Baltskandio: LOSS 1-2

FB Adam Hyder: Let two attackers by, leading to goals. Need to have a serious discussion, no phatic niceties. Hyder's at risk of being cut.

WB Ryan Duckler: Outstanding effort. Tallied an assist on Nuetralle's goal. Probably safe.

"Unfashionably light? Seriously, Rhéal? Some Ministry of Morale puke is critiquing my girlfriend?"

"The Ministry's been emphasizing the phatic over the practical lately. Loads of tabloids and gossip sites. They know all about Alli's anorexia."

"Is that why they didn't get our roster in on time?"

"Think so."

Out of the stadium, into the beer garden. Jaffacake sips his brew, looks up to the sky and frowns.
"The sky's a funny colour."
Rubio looks up, and disagrees.
"You can't see? It's grey, electric, almost like a human brain..."
"Er, yeah" says Rubio, a poor attempt at phatic expression.

“Somehow, I don't see us retaining the title.”

“Why's that?”

“I don't know. There's just something... phatic about all this, but not us in particular.”

“Phatic?”

“Aye.”

Phatic?”

“Aye!”

“I don't think that means what you think it means, Hurko.”

“Like fate, right?”

“I only wish it were that simple.”

"So? How are you?" said Raysil over the phone.

It wasn't a phatic question. Back in Kolpuung, with her teammates on the other side of the world (and the physios watching all of them closely), she couldn't really feel them the same way.

"Okay," said Talia. "But I miss you."

The Pony Republic of Equestrian States
National U-10 Soccer Team - Brevity Challenge Cup II Roster

Team Background
This is the team of the future for the Equestrian States. Don't expect to see them at the World Cup anytime soon, but about ten years from now they will be in the thick of it. This team was sent to the Greg Jackson Charity Cup in a tournament that the National Equestrian Sports Council was willing to throw away. However, the fillies and colts of the team performed extraordinarily well, advancing to the quarterfinals ahead of several reserve and U-21 squads (and oddly enough, a U-1923 team). Though the team fell to eventual runners-up Darmen, the team's victories provided a source of entertainment for many as the young ponies of the Equestrian States creamed a couple of national teams.

All-Time Stats
Style Modifier: -2.5
Record: 9-3-6 (3-2-1 at Brevity Challenge Cup II)
Achievments: Greg Jackson Charity Cup (Quarterfinals)
Oblique Strategy: What is the simplest solution? - When the NESC debated which team they should send to the Brevity Challenge Cup, they looked for the simplest solution. The answer was the easily financed U-10 team. Even the team itself chases simple solutions, mastering the basics before pulling any stunts. It's worked once before, why shouldn't it again?

How dreadful, we just drew a bunch of tots. Saying something phatic won't be easy. Seems that against little kids the forwards didn't want to defend, but being jovial will put us in the spirits to win our next match- our only match against regular adults.

Bears Armed

‘The Bear-Belles’

National football organisation: ‘Bears Armed Association for Soccer’ (= ‘BAAS’).
(Chairbear: Arrannah Graye [Chairbear of River City S.C.])
National anthem (for sports): ‘The Banner Green And Gold’.

Yes, it still is an all-female team. As I’ve explained before, this is because the main ball-game that's traditionally been played in Bears Armed is actually a form of Rugby, but [for several reasons] the professional league for that sport is all-male and so some of the female players decided that switching to Soccer — and trying to establish a professional league for that sport for themselves instead — might be a viable alternative: They were right, because that professional league was founded shortly after WC44 and so has now been in operation for over fifty years.

All of the players are actual Ursines (i.e. anthropomorpic, bipedal Bears)], except for any whom I actually specify as being members of other ‘peoples’ instead. The Harr'aynau people are physically human (more-or-less, anyway, although inclined towards heavy builds & hairiness), but are spiritually & culturally Ursine instead.

According to Bears Armed’s timeline, the year is now 2072
AD.

This team’s members are mainly drawn on the squad that won Di Bradini Cup #21 for the Bears four years ago. They should be good enough to deserve the full ranking to which they're theoretically entitled.

Staff

Manager & Chief Coach: Urra ‘Honey’ SunBlesséd _ A female Ursine from the Sun Clan, she has 63 years of experience in football and played for the Bear-Belles from BoF#31 right through into WC#57. She is now 84 years old but, although not amongst the people from the team’s former staff who were “rejuvenated” in 2042, still seems quite ‘young’ both physically and mentally. She is right-pawed, with ‘honey-brown’ fur, and has very good eyesight even by human (rather than Ursine) standards. She is a very accurate kicker, and was therefore one of the usual first choices for taking free kicks & penalties. Her nickname comes from her fur-colour, and her very sweet nature: Originally it was also because (as we must admit…) she was rather “thick”, but then she ‘grew-up’ mentally during WWC12 & the qualifiers for WC50 so that now she has a verrry good mind indeed… She acted as manager for the [“unified”] U21 teams that Bears Armed entered in DBC13 (=> runners-up) and DBC14 (=> quarter-finals), whilst WC58 (with its qualifiers) was her first competition in charge of the country’s senior team.

Deputy Manager (Admin): Amarra Marra o Harruor
(female Ursine, from Clan Harruor Erruur; formerly a staff member at BAAS, appointed to this job just before DBC21; age = 31, fur = medium-brown).

Doctor: Rebearrch’hra o RedRose
(female Ursine, from the RedRose ‘Free Sept’; age = 36, left-pawed, fur = medium brown with reddish highlights; hired just before DBC21.)

Physio: Behrthye NorthWalker
(female Harr’aynau [humanoid], from Clan WildWoods; age = 32, right-handed, hair = ginger; hired just before DBC21.)

Routemaster (this job involves handling all of the squad’s travelling arrangements): This is currently a part of Amarra Marra o Harruor’s duties.

Chaplain, ‘One Plus Seven’: Urrsulha Nightfall
(female Ursine from the Silver-of-Night; age = late-30s, left-pawed, fur = silvery; assigned to this job, by the Great Medicine Society, just before the qualifiers for WC57.)

Chaplain, Ursion: Derrik Ommin
(male Ursine, from Clan Artorran; age = 38; right-pawed, fur = light brown & fairly short, he is a bit closer to ‘human’ in shape than is the average Ursine; seconded to this post from the staff of the ArchPriest of New Sarrum, who is the Earthly head of the Ursion Church; he is a keen student of Football, both nationally & internationally, and can bore for England Bears Armed on the details of teams’ records & players’ careers [and about the statistics involved, too: Did I mention yet that he originally trained as a statistician? ^_^ ] — if you give him even half a chance…)

Security Chief: Major Arran Warrd
(male Ursine, from Clan Herrchaum; age = 37, left-pawed, fur = dark grey; easily overlooked, most of the time; seconded from [an unspecified unit within] the Confederal Army to this job just before the qualifiers for WC57.)

Caterers: Jorrdon Blue.

“Mascot”: ‘The Wise Grorrfinn’ (male ‘TrueBear’; age = undisclosed [but considering some of his appearances in old stories apparently somewhere over 1’500, at least...], ambidextrous, fur = medium-brown); during WC54 it was revealed that he is the maternal grandfather of Urra ‘Honey’ SunBlesséd.

Roster

Usual Starters

(#1) Marranna NorthStar _ Clan = NorthStar [‘Free Sept’]; home team = NorthGate Nomads, category & usual position = Goalkeeper, experience = 9 years; age = 22 years, rightt-pawed, fur = very light brown, she has very quick reflexes and keen senses. (DBC21 was her international debut.)

(#2) Lueth’hree Redwood _ Clan = Redwood; home team = River City, category = Defender, usual position = Left Back, experience = 10 years; age = 20 years, left-pawed, fur = medium-brown. (DBC21 was her international debut.)

(#3) Urratharra o SouthWoods _ Clan = WestWoods; home team = GramBridge Town, category = Defender or Midfielder, preferred & usual position = Right Back, experience = 12 years; age = 24 years, right-pawed, fur = medium-brown. (She made her international debut in DBC19, as a substitute, and was then a starter in DBC20.)

(#4) Darrarlha o GoodSword _ Clan = Sun; Home team = Sun Valley Smashers, category = Defender or Lynchpin or Midfielder, usual position = Lynchpin, experience = 9 years; age = 23 years, ambidextrous, fur = blonde; a superlative player, and a good tactician, she is the team’s Captain. (DBC21 was her international debut, and she then progressed into the senior squad for WC59.)

(#5) Sarra Elizabeth Thunder _ Human; Clan = Gunnar; Home team = National University Tigers, category = Midifelder/Winger/Forward, usual position = Midfield Left, experience = 12 years; age = 23 years, right-footed, hair = blonde; quick on her feet, seems to be naturally gifted, a fast thinker, and a good team-player. (She is the daughter of Karra Caroline Thunder, who is currently manager of Jeru FC, but her father’s identity has never been made public. Her first degree was in Anthropology, but she is now working on an MBA. [i](She acted as a mascot for the teams that Bears Armed sent to DBC #17-19, but DBC21 was her international debut as an actual player in international football.).

(#6) Running Moose _ Clan = Five Lakes; Home team = Green River Giants, category = Midfielder, usual position = Midfield Right, experience = 12 years; age = 23 years, right-pawed, fur = ‘grizzled’ dark brown & quite long; actually a pair of identical twins who count as a single person for legal purposes and who often act as though they share a single mind, the two halves of this player will normally stay close together on the pitch and might keep passing the ball back-&-forth. (She/they made her/their international debut in DBC20, and also played in DBC21.)

(#7) Urrth’hrra o Barrdenn _ Clan = GreenWoods; Home team = Barrdenn Barbariennes, category = Forward, usual position = Left Forward (‘Inside Left’), experience = 12 years; age = 24 years, right-pawed, fur = dark brown & quite long. (She made her international debut in DBC20 and also played in DBC21.)

(#10) Amarra Sunwatcher _ Clan = Sun; Home team = Sun Valley Smashers, category = Forward, usual position = Centre Forward or Right Forward, experience = 13 years; age = 24 years, right-pawed, fur = “oatmeal” colour, eyesight good even by human standards, very fast on her feet, very accurate in ‘set pieces’ for which she is therefore one of the favoured takers. (She made her international debut in DBC20 and also played in DBC21.)

(#11) Hilgh’hra Westlander _ Harr’aynau humanoid; Clan = Redwood; home team = LakePort Lionesses, category = Forward or Winger, preferred & usual position = Right Forward (Inside Right) or Right Winger, experience = 9 years; age = 20, right-pawed, hair = ginger. (This is her international debut.)

(#12) ?_ Clan = ?; home team = , category = Winger, usual position = Right Winger (Outside Right), experience = ? years; age = ?, ?-pawed, fur = ?. (This is [probably] her international debut.)

(#13) Marra-Harra o Dusk _ Clan = Urrset; home team = Kingly City, category = Winger or [Attacking] Midfielder, preferred & usual position = Left Winger (Outside Left), experience = 9 years; age = 21, left-footed, fur= reddish-brown, good at getting in where she isn’t expected. (This is her international debut.)

___________________________________________________________________________

Style: Offensive, modifier = +3… ("A good offence is the best defence"...)
Their usual formation will include a front row of at least 5 (normally arranged as 3 strikers & 2 wingers), with 2 midfielders, 2 backs, and either a ‘Defensive Centre’ (whose starting position would be at the midpoint of an imaginary cross drawn between those other four non-forwards’ positions) or a third midfielder depending on the Manager’s decision before each match.

Oblique Strategy: "Do the last thing first"... And what is the last thing that one does in a football game? Hear the result, of course: The Belles go out there onto the pitch hearing 'another win for Bears Armed' inside their heads, confident that they will win, and aim to get the winning goals scored very quickly.

________________________________

Opponents may _

Choose my goalscorers: Y (but the Forwards, and then the Wingers, are likeliest to fill this role...)
Godmod Scoring Events: Y

RP injuries to my players / Godmod injuries to my players / Hand out Yellow cards to my players / Hand out Red cards to my players: Y to all, at least to start with, but remember what I've written here and keep it in limits accordingly... Any serious offences by my players would probably result in injuries to your players, and causing any serious injuries to my players would probably require such obviously-deliberate attacks that your players would get yellow or even red cards as a result too. Don’t kill anybody, or inflict injuries that would be serious enough to end careers, without checking with me & getting my approval (which is unlikely to be granted…) first.

Godmod Other Events: Y, I suppose, at least as long as you do so in an AMUSING way... but please remember that Ursines are fully sapient beings, as much as Humans are, not instinct-driven animals. Oh, and of course female Ursines are not sexually interested in Humans (of either sex), and it's very unlikely that female Harr'ayanau would be either. Please don't have them run amok or outright revert to animality, without checking by TG first, don't make assumptions about their views on politics or religion, and don't do anything that would make more than one of them incapable of playing in their next game...

Kit: This incarnation of the team will normally wear the usual set of designs (from ‘ediraf’) that the Belles have favoured in the past, with the ‘Association’ badges correctly staying ‘BAAS’ rather than [the now obsolete] ‘BAMAS’. See "here" for details. Bears Armed has traditionally used base-8 arithmetic, for several reasons, and this has affected the set of numbers used for this team’s players: The number “22” has traditionally been left unassigned out of respect for its first [& only] wearer who died a heroine’s death during the year immediately following WC44, and now the number "10" has likewise been withdrawn from use…

NOTES

Ursines may tend to be a bit less agile & slower to accelerate than humans on average, but this team's members were carefully selected so the gap between them & their opponents in this respect should be narrower than some people might expect. They do tend to have [slightly] poorer eyesight than humans, on the whole (although the members of both Clan Gunnar and the Sun Clan are generally an exception to this rule, and the eyesight of the latter group is actually often at [slightly] better-than-human levels instead), so long-distance passes & shots at goal will tend to be rarer behaviour for them than they are for human teams... but their typical size & strength mean that when they're running with the ball it will probably take a very brave human — as well as a very skilled one — to tackle them successfully (or, at least, one who has reasonable experience of playing against Ursines…), which should balance that factor pretty well. They don’t jump very well, but then they’re generally rather taller than most Human players to start with so they shouldn’t need to jump as often in order to intercept [relatively] high shots...
Ursines are physically robust, of course, which means that they're much less likely than humans are to suffer injuries in falls or collisions. The females of this species are more even-tempered than the males, and the team's members will try to stay on their best behaviour not only in order to do well in this contest but also to impress upon the watching humans that Ursines aren't just "dumb beasts". They will not 'dive', or feign injury in other ways, because suggesting that they could be harmed so easily goes strongly against the grain. ‘Northlanders’ are maybe not quite as "civilised" as the 'Mainlanders'… or, at any rate, that’s the traditional stereotype..
Cold weather should pose no problem to them, even if there's snow or ice on the pitch, but tropical heat might prove awkward...

Unless our hosts at the match in question object, this team's members (including the designated substitutes for the match in question) will perform a [fairly short] ritual that's called the 'harrdiharr' on the pitch just before play begins... This is a traditional war-dance, meant to over-awe opponents, that has come to be a customary prelude for team games as well (similar to the [RL] New Zealanders' 'haka'...). : )
As has now been seen during various tournaments, some of our fans like to take drums — and possibly also 'Urrs-horns' [which are similar to Alpenhorns, cow-horns, or other "musical instruments", too — along to the matches…

The team is accompanied by a number of sapient ravens, who are there both to gather information about the rival sides and to provide air cover in case of hostile waterfowl.

"Ayyuh, but at least we got here before the game was due to start, so we didn't forfeit."

"Not by much, though: Could have used more time to acclimatise, for sure."

"For sure!"

MD3 Challenges
Matchday 3 will be scored on Wednesday evening.

Your RP must be precisely fifty words long, and include the word of the day, one which is 'trending', according to Dictionary.com this afternoon: Gypsy

The Polarian Challenge will remain in place for the duration - your next RP must begin with the last letter of your last post. Or number, if that's what you finished on. Haven't posted yet? Your next RP must begin with the letter W, with the second word in your RP beginning with the letter A, and the third D. As in, What A Disgrace (but not that).

And the day's new challenge (a one-off, this) comes courtesy of Earent: It's lipogram time...

You must complete your RP without the use of one vowel. Lucky for you, you can pick which one. You are not permtted to smply wrte your RP wthout usng your nomnated letter lke ths. You have to create your RP by spelling properly and avoiding words that have your chosen vowel in them.

Free Titles from the poetry section of Lulu.com self-publishing heaven - your RP must have one of these as the title, and somehow relate to that title. These are free titles, meaning they don't count for your word count and they also are not affected by the lipogram challenge (unless - in both cases - you use them in the body of your RP).

Our Cockatiels

People seldom recognize the pestilence that cockatiels present to the world. The ones we received from some gypsy friends are no less problematic. Whenever they watch the television, they excitedly shriek as if seized by demon spirits to share their pain and agony. Will anyone take these birds away, please?

Shines of a Angel

Dorian approached Silveen, who was analyzing a spreadsheet.

"Watcha doing?"

"Trying to fix my company's relationship with Wings of the Angels, the aircraft giant. The Gypspy navigation system we developed for them failed horridly..."

"Will that help bring in more wins?"

"I finance the team myself. Make an informed inference."

Shines of an Angel

Even more from Coach's notebook:

CB Brian Craven: Covered the pitch like a gypsy moving from place to place; managed to be wherever he was needed. Certain to keep his spot.

WM Michael Yeller: Played like he had an angel on his side. Tallied one goal, one assist. Definitely safe.

"Defeating Civil Citizenry seems to be the Gypsy thing right now."

"That made no sense... wait we really did it?"

"Yessir."

"So what's the release date again."

"When the Challenge is finished. And it really is challenging in here."

"Speaking of challenge, that trophy is really shiny."

"Go win it!"

“Eurgh.”

“Something wrong, Hurko?”

“Very. Look down the street. Gypsy chick plus friends lotiering on the curb.”

“So?”

“Pickpockets, Otz, the lot of them. Keep your eyes peeled.”

“Oh, don't tell me you believed Powell.”

“You bet I do. Nice competition, but don't forget it's full of lonely, thieving children.”

Up and down Karatá's pitch ran Soypuv without stopping. Only moving on, as a gypsy might. This right-back was usually of Numa, "sons." But his club was just hijos abandonados, for Soypuv was playing in his nation's kit.

Disappointingly, old Graham Hill got past him to notch a goal.

Dear Dad,

All going well here at the BCC. Scored only goal in shock win over Astograth, really pleased. People agree however that the living conditions here are below what we have back home. Abandoned gypsy children roam the streets at night, so we're worried over safety.

Miss everyone.

Transcending Towards Pseudo Vagina

Generally after losses, the squad gets no reward. After some matches, the team deserves to be subjected to some good energy. As gypsys, we found our way towards a sex toy purveyor- some days get long, matches don't take place all hours of the day. Unfortunately, the store was closed.
