Hehe, low score win at first, then two scoreless games, and then completely killed 2-6. I wonder how the rest of the qualifying will go.

You'd of thought that would been in the news somewhere. ;)
Schiavonia wrote:As far as I'm concerned, as they haven't specifically stated it directly to the hosts, they should carry on playing their games until such a time. Then, as far as I remember, it is a 3-0 loss and three points lost per game. Previous examples of this happening involve The Water Cooler and one game by The Belmore Family, both back in the mid teens.

I (and Oli) agree with Schia here—Sierra Apathia has not withdrawn, because it has not informed the hosts of this decision (either directly, or in this thread). The team’s matches will continue to be scorinated normally until that changes. From an in-character perspective, one could consider that the team currently playing is a rogue team, operating without the knowledge of Sierra Apathia’s football association, taking advantage of the failure by the FA to communicate the situation to the WCC or PARSEC (WC51 organizing committee).

Of course that's what you should do.
My intention was, as I said, just to share that with my qualifying group for their roleplaying. Somehow it became a call for them to lose their games by forfeit, apparently.

Raise your hand if you're behind non-RPing nations worst ranked than you.

Now, raise your hand if you think those nations will end up better ranked than you in the end of the tournament, even if they write not a single word in the RP thread.

I think I used up all my luck in the World Bowl, though so far not so bad, only lost against teams significantly better ranked.

Or maybe Margaret is just punishing me for having been a naughty boy one too many times in NSsports ;)

I think, that as experienced nations, we take for granted that all newbies understand the difference between doing well in the Baptism of Fire and doing well in the World Cup. It can be frustrating coming out of a BoF where you did well, and then not getting results against teams you feel you should be beating while understanding that you are probably not going to get results against top teams. I can speak from experience. I went 10-1-0 in the group stage of my BoF then went breezed through the knockouts to win that title. I accepted my first two losses, on the road against top ranked teams, without problem. Then came my home opener against an unranked team. Victory fodder, this was going to be great! I had a draw. I then aired out my feelings in the discussion thread and was told the same things people tell you now: RP doesn’t guarantee results, randomness rules, yadda yadda yadda.

I stuck with it, but not all new players do. Every World Cup we see talented roleplayers in the Baptism of Fire just disappear. Maybe they come back for the next Cup, but the one after that, you’re wondering where they went. We have new newbies to replace them, so perhaps there is a feeling that they are disposable.

Since my Baptism of Fire, and since that one disappointing home opening draw against an unranked side, I have learned a lot. I have co-hosted a World Cup myself (49). Specifically, I have learned that what I was told was true. But I don’t know if newbies necessarily understand why its true. We treat (and I am just as guilty as this) their concerns the same way: telling them that RP doesn’t guarantee results, and that doing well takes time. Yes, indeed, it does.

But why? In the Baptism of Fire, you are all starting out at zero. You have no rank, and you have no RP points. Therefore, when you accumulate RP points (and the BoF traditionally scores more per RP then will World Cup qualifying). So as you RP day by day, you are creating a large gap between yourself and the nations not RP’ing. Because of this, you have a better chance of getting a positive result during the scorinating process. Again, not knowing (and it’s not necessary to know for the sake of the argument), by the end of the BoF you could have around 10 points while opponents have far less. So your chances of winning are greater.

Now, lets fast forward to the World Cup. If you had those 10 points towards the end of the BoF, you no longer have them. You have whatever your KPB point value was as posted by Cafundeu in the pre-qualifying ranks. If you did well, it’s probably a number around 2. That non-roleplaying newbie, this early in qualifying, if they played in the BoF, probably has a number around 1. In qualifying, you do not (probably) get as many points per RP as you did in the BoF, so if you’re playing that newbie early, they have a much better shot at beating you then they did in the BoF. As a new nation, if you continue to RP, you will have better odds of beating these teams the second time around, but still that doesn’t necessarily mean you will. On any day, anyone can beat anyone. Just look at my last two results. I’m a top 20 team and we now have back to back losses against two sides ranked 200+. Margaret hates me right now, but these results are nothing more then the randomness factor. I’m confident that eventually things will pan out. So, just realize it can and will happen to everyone.

In short, your contributions are appreciated and not ignored. And they will pay off, in time. In your first qualification (and probably also your second) you must keep your expectations limited. In the real world, could a newly founded nation compete with Brazil, Italy, or Germany, in the World Cup? No. They will also struggle with mediocre nations and below average. Eventually, that nation has to work its way up. That gets simulated very well with the way things are done within our World Cup. Eventually, you can win a World Cup. Dancougar went from BoF26 (World Cup 39 year), and won World Cup 46. Cassadaigua went from BoF 30 (world cup 43 year) and won World Cup 50. It can be done, but you have to be realistic and not have expectations at this point. Enjoy the competition, and realize that now, you are not “Brazil” or “Italy”, and your nation is developing its program.

I had to face a nice string of ranks: ranked 6th, 134th, 25th, 85th. And now I get to face 64th and 46th! But, the last three matchdays are against weak teams, so I'm expecting to get better. Though I noticed that losing makes my RP's more fun and interesting to write, so I'm not really upset.

Agreed. Those two freak results at the start of qualifying, coupled with a win out of nowhere against them purple people, has meant I'm engaged more in RPing now since...probably World Cup 17.
