One of the highlights of the last WC cycle for me was Asto & K+P's history of the World Cup, produced for their BoF tournament.

Have to say, early candidate for post of the competition this time out has to be Audioslavia's Spaamgate, another excellent piece on NS WC heritage, I really enjoyed it. For anyone who wasn't there for the first ten World Cup editions, this is surely essential reading.

Or am I the only relative newb who cares about this stuff?

Having first joined NS prior to the WC38 cycle, I can claim to be neither a n00b or a veteran, but I totally agree. Fantastic RP that I couldn't stop reading. Hopefully Audioslavia's got a couple more of those in him/her? Wink wink nudge nudge? ;)

Nope. I was in that BoF and enjoyed reading those.

Though I haven't gotten around to reading the WC59 ones yet...

Seems like I have a long way to go to write nice RPs. I'm only in for my 4th cycle now - I still haven't got anything more to say than the regular things.

Or I should make my team into some hippie/new-age ensemble, busier with psychadelic music and drugs than football...

Generally bids include a description of how your event will be run (groups? how many and of what size?) and specify which scorinator (program) you'll be using to generate results. In your case, it might be a good idea to stick around the forum for a while first and keep RPing in events to get a better feel for how sports RP works before trying to bid for anything.

Try giving your players various personality quirks or interests and hobbies outside of football. Makes things a good deal more entertaining.
