Goalkeeper: Elisabet Heimirsson

Caps: 2
Goals: 0
Shirt No.: 1
Club: Kangerlussaq University
Height: 1.94m

Pucked from her senior school at the age of 17 and brought into the national pool, Elisabet is an athletic and dynamic keeper who is able to get around the box and the goal quickly. She is especially talented at 1-on-1s due to her large frame and er extra-ordinary height, she is quite an imposing person. Nicknamed "kónguló", which means the spider, as she is spider-like when getting around the goal. She plays for the University in the the Deildinniálandsvísu, and has kept for them ever since gaining her sports scholarship to the Universty three years ago. She also runs 5000m for the Natonal Athletic Association.

Right Defender: Svanhildur Vilhjalmsson
Sex: Female
Age: 20
Caps: 2
Goals: 1
Shirt No.: 3
Club: Lutaqaq University
Height: 1.95m

A mountain of a woman, she is a giant at right back, and at anywhere else for that matter. Her massive hieght and size make her a formidable character to face down. Opposition strikers fear her as she is known as the "fótur brotsjór" or the "leg breaker". She is aso quite effective down the wing and is able to play in deadly accurate crosses. She is also very effective in the box, able to get her head and foot on corners and crosses. She plays domestically for Lutaqaq University, where she captained them to the first ever Deildinniálandsvísu title last year. She is no stranger to ill-discipline, and leads the Deildinniálandsvísu red-card list, with 3 in the first season.

Central Defender: Friðrika Robertsson (c)
Sex: Female
Age: 19
Caps: 2
Goals: 0
Shirt No.: 5
Club: Lutaqaq University
Height: 1.76m

The captain of the side, she has a wonderful footballing brain and is a masterful tactician, also, she is quite a handy footballer. Despite her small size, she is quite a formidable defender and is surprisingly stubbourn and strong-willed. She gets stuck into every tackle and commits 100% in every game. She too played for the Lutaqaq University which won the first Deildinniálandsvísu title and took home defender of the tournament

Central Defender: Hjördís Hilmarsson
Sex: Female
Age: 20
Caps: 2
Goals: 0
Shirt No.: 12
Club: Kangerlussaq XI
Height: 1.90m

Another stalwart defender who is also very strong in the air, and the target-woman for crosses and corners. She is widely popular and widely known for her pierecing run through the middle and powerful shots from the edge of the area. She was the highest scroing defender in the Deildinniálandsvísu with 6 goals last season. She hopes to be a key player in the rise of Grunuikerr Footballand has all the capability to do so. Tends to be a bit over-excitable and can be ill-disicplined.

Left Defender: Pála Ingolfsson
Sex: Female
Age: 22
Caps: 2
Goals: 0
Shirt No.: 8
Club: Kangerlussaq University
Height: 1.84m

Mrs. Perfect. She has never been booked in professional football, and took home the fair play award in the Deildinniálandsvísu last season. However, this does not mean that she is n incompetent defender, as she is able to make any tackle and challenge for any 50/50. She plays in the sweeper role and always stays back during any attacking situation. She has the pace to match any on-coming striker, which makes her formidable in 1-on-1 situations. She is strong in the air and has a great eye to pik out long passes to either wing. Never scored a professional goal either.

Right Midfield: Mary Arnardottir
Sex: Female
Age: 17
Caps: 2
Goals: 0
Shirt No.: 6
Club: Heider SV
Height: 1.78m

A bit of an Air-head, but a great footballer nonetheless. She has the ability to break apart an entire defence with a through ball or dazzle defenders with neat footwork, or she can be caught day-dreaming as the opposition walk behind her and walk the ball into the net. She hs never really seen football as something she does proffessionaly, just somethnig she does as a hobby, so that can affect her performance in matches. She plays for the only semi-proffesional club in the Deildinniálandsvísu, but a very talented player if she's in the right mood.

Centre Midfield: Lisa Arnardottir
Sex: Female
Age: 18
Caps: 2
Goals: 0
Shirt No.: 10
Club: Kangerlussaq University
Height: 1.80m

Almost the spitting image of her sister, Mary, but much more of a concentrated footballer. She is known throughout Grunuik for her dazzaling footwork and excellent midfield play. She is an icon for young girls all over the country, with her flashy smile and her movie-star good looks, she is very much thepublic face of the otherwise pirvate side. She has a tendency to let things go whilst not playing, and that can prove costly for her image and on the pitch.

Right Midfield: Sara Leifsson
Sex: Female
Age: 21
Caps: 2
Goals: 0
Shirt No.: 10
Club: South Territory
Height: 1.73m

Has the deadliest left foot in the entire country, she takes all shooting free kicks and right hand corners. She has inch-perfect crossing and passing, and has the ability to slice opposition defences open with a single through ball. She is the playmaker of the side, and is always targeted by both her team, to get the ball into space and start attacks, and the other team, whom try to injure her. She is the player who can turn a throw in from inside your own half and turn it into the ball in the back of the net in less than 34.72 seconds.

Attacking Midfield: Stefan Pallensen
Sex: Male
Age: 34
Caps: 2
Goals: 1
Shirt No.: 9
Club: Heider SV
Height: 2.01m

The only male in the side, an he's had to play mighty well to get in. Because of the discrimination of males in football, he couldn't get a proffessional contract with any Deildinniálandsvísu side, so has to play with semi-pro side Heider FC. He makes a great partnership with central midfielder Mary Arnardottir, whom he plays with at Heider SV. Supposedly he is miles better than any of the women in the team, but no-one really says that, the all just think it. He is a talented playmaker with a keen eye for long shots at goal, and has scored some real beauties in his time.

Right Striker: Kðper
Sex: Polar Bear, female
Age: 7
Caps: 2
Goals: 2
Shirt No.: 00
Club: Kangerlussaq University
Height: 4m

Yes, she's a polar bear. What? Teams have bears in them. Anyway, she was the result of a scientific experiment at Kangerlussaq University to see whether a non-sentinent creature could be trained to play football. Many years, maulings and painful brain injections, Kðper was born, an showed natral talent from a very early age. He plays upright on two legs, and wears a shirt with 00 on it. He has a massive fan base, mostly becuase heis a Polar Bear, but also because of his immense power and shooting ability from close range....Yeah its basically cos he's a Polar Bear

Left Striker: Kristjana Hilmarsson
Sex: Female
Age: 19
Caps: 2
Goals: 1
Shirt No.: 11
Club: South Territory
Height: 1.69m

Kris is the fastest player on the team and a daemon goal-scorer, she picked up the golden boot in the Deildinniálandsvísu, netting 22 times in 21 games. She uses her great pace to get ahead of defenders and latch onto through balls from Sara Leifsson and put them away with her deadly finishing. She is the highest payed player in the Deildinniálandsvísu, and despite her tiny stature, is also quite a character, who likes to laugh and joke around whilst on the ptich and during training.

Grunuik plays first ever international

Today, at the Horvassur in Kangerlussaq, Grunuik played their first ever football international match against Darmen. There was a sell-out crowd at the Horvassur and large TV Screens had been erected outside so an extra 80,000 fans could watch. Nothing was expected of Grunuik, but we didn't want to get thumped.

The Darmen side got a silent reception as they trotted out onto the field, then the most thunderous roar you ever heard came from the ground as they Grunuik side trotted out wearing their newly designed red and white kit. Again, the Darmeni anthem was received by a deathly silence, with the glare of 32,000 fans on the Darmeni players.

Again, the entire crowd began to sing the national anthem, and the stadium was in raputres for the 30 seconds after the anthems. The atmosphere were electric, and very, very hostile to the Darmeni players. It was a night time game, so the temperature had started to drop to around -3 degrees. The Grunuik Players were wearing long sleeves, whereas the Darmeni players were in their short sleeves, and invariably cold.

The match started well for Grunuik, with a spell of continued possession in the first 10 minutes. The first chance came when Lisa Arnardottir linked through to Kóper, who, the Darmeni had not quite got use to yet, powered a shot which went past the right hand post. Darmen had the first real opportunity on 17 minutes when a corner was swung in by Luca Cormio was received by Tor Tong Lee, who struck it from 10 yards, but it was excellently parried by Heimirsson and then the re-bound was struck by Lee again, but it was blocked and cleared.

The first goal came, unfortunately, came for Darmen, when Tor Tong Lee took a through ball from Zach Preston and he expertley rounded Heimirsson and put the ball into the back of net. Another close chance camefor 2-0 four kinutes later when a long cross from Jake Gibbons somehow got through to Tor Tong Lee, but his close-range shot was smothered by Heimirsson.

Grunuik were caught napping in the 44th minute, when a corner was smashed up field and Lee caught onto it and beat the last defnder and chipped Heimirsson expertley. The crowd was deathly silent, except for the bunch of Darmeni players celebrating in the corner.

The half ended and there was much discussion and reflecton, plus a massive BBQ in the parking lot, which was supposedly a publicity stunt from a food manufacturer, providing a BBQ for 85,000 people at 10:00 at night in -8 degrees.

The second half started with another attcking period, and on 54 minutes, Grunuik scored thier first ever international goal, when Stefan Pallensen played a high ball forward, and Kristijana Hilmarsson slid the ball under the Darmeni keeper.

To Be Continued...

U-21 Nationaliga Finals

Image

Field Hockey is arguably the most popular sport, receiving a massive following in the south and the east of the country. It is played almost exclusively by women except for two clubs. Hockey is more of a lucrative profession than soccer, so there is arguably more talent, as players are trained and coached better.

The Nationaliga season is the most watched thing on national television, with over an average of 30,000 viewers a game, and higher for the finals. However, stadiums have always stayed remarkably small, with only one stadium over 50,000, which is miles bigger than any other. The regular season begins in March, when the weather begins to get better, and ends in August, with the play-offs in September. The Nationaliga is competed by 8 teams, with very specific rules. They can only have 5 players over the age of 21, as to encourage growth and development by players who then advance to the lessly anticipated senior-leagues.

The selection process for new players is very much like American Football, with the team which comes last In the last season gets the first pick of the new talent from the schools and Universities, so as not to keep the teams who perform badly at the bottom.

This season produced a particularly spectacular performance from Kangerlussaq Hawks. They took 17 year old midfielder Mæja Ármannsson from Kangerlussaq Senior Girls School (KSGS), and 16-year old defender Pordis Thorirsson from Lutaqaq Hockey Academy. They went on a storming 19-game run un-beaten run, only losing the first game and the last game. They qualified for the play-offs along with Kangerlussaq HC (who signed 17- year old strike duo of Margrat Sigurdsson and Helena Broekul), Lutaqaq Dragons (who signed 16-year old Keeper Lena Hassisson amongst others) and Haveømir HC (who signed KSGS striker Jonà Olvirsson)

The Playoffs were 1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd, which saw Kangerlussaq Hawks face off against Haveømir HC at the Royal Kavæn Arena (7,500) and Kangerlussaq HC facing Lutaqaq Dragons at the Horvassur Hockey Arena (3,000). It was expected to be an all-Kangerlussaq tie for the final, played at the Jugi Arena in front of 55,000 fans.

The first match began with a yellow card for Kangerlussaq Hawks ace midfielder Jenna Steinsson for a illegal stick tackle, and Haveømir took a a shock early lead when Edyis Agnersson, the rising international star scored a 7-yard shot, beating Kangerlussaq keeper Frieda Ingimursson by some distance, a mean feat in the regular season.

However It didn't take the Hawks long to equalise, when Mæja Arnission sending a long ball across to Varń Abulsson who expertly skilled two Haveømir defenders and slotted the ball into the net. The temperature began to soar as Kangerlussaq took a major step forward, with Josié Leitursson sliding in two goals in quick succession leaving Haveømir 3-1 down at half-time. The second half began even worse for Haveømir, when Helena Barasson was sin-bind after a late stock tackle on Abulsson, which lead to a short corner and another goal for Kangerlussaq. Haveømir managed to pull one back through a short-corner, but the match was probably put out by another Arnission goal made it 5-2 with ten minutes to go. Abulsson added the misery onto Haveømir as she rounded off an excellent team move and netted easily from 2 yards.

The other tie was much more one sided if it can be, but it was a shock win for Lutaqaq Dragons over Kangerlussaq HC, and it was mostly down to 15-year-old striker KSGS striker Mary Arnarsson. She scored a sweetly struck ariel effort from 17 yards after two minutes, then added another one three minutes later after skilling three Kangerlussaq defenders, making the score 2-0 after just 7 minutes. The game entered a rather dull period, after Arnarsson received an ankle injury and had to be treated for 10 minutes. The match was also stopped for 5 minutes before half-time as Helena Timirssom was struck in the face by a short corner from Lutaqaq and was concussed for 10 minutes before being subbed off.

Kangerlussaq pulled one back after a Georgie Pietersson netted a high cross from Alessa Dubrossir. This did nothing as Arnarsson added another one four minutes later, beating yet more defenders and slotting past the keeper, completing her hat-trick. Her team mate Lilja Helgursson netted a scrappy goal off a long corner, and then she intercepted a poor 16 yard restart and chipped the keeper, making it 5-1. Ulna Bensson scored the final goal in added time with a deft touch from a Helgursson cross.

The final match up would be Kangerlussaq Hawks vs Lutaqaq Dragons. Not the all Kangerlussaq encounter everyone had expected, but the Hawks fan were happy, and were expecting another title

Match Report: Kintaria 1-4 Grunuik

Goalscorers:
Grunuik: Vilhjalmsson (17"), Kóper (48", 72"), Pallensen (90+1)
Kintaria: Lukas Sabchot (81")

Grunuik recorded their first international win away at Kintaria. A large contingent of Grunuik fans joined the team in Kintaria, and the anthem again was belted out by the die-hard fans behind the Kintaria Goal.

Grunuik started with a period of attacking and almost opened their account on 6 minutes when Stefan Pallensen threaded through to Kòper, who smashed her way through the defence, but his powerful shot went over the bar from 15 yards. Frir Robertsson missed a header she really should have scored off a Sara Leifsson corner.

The deadlock was broken after another Sara Leifsson set-play, this time a 30 yard free-kick which was lobbed into the area, and Svanhildur Vilhjalmasson was unmarked at the far post and she nodded home past the Kintaria keeper.

Grunuik felt they should have had a penalty on 30 minutes after Kris Hilmarsson was brought down in the area by Costin Petran, the Kintaria keeper after a through ball, but the ref said he got the ball, so nothing became of it.

Kòper's powerful shot thundered off the cross-bar off a 25-yard shot and Hilmarsson put the tricky re-bound over the bar. So the half-time whistle went with the score at 1-0 and Grunuik felt happy with their performance.

The second half began greatly for Grunuik, after Kòper's long shot smashed off the right up-right and beat Petran, making the score 2-0. The game died down for a while, with few chances for either side. The closest chance for Grunuik when Pala Ingolfsson's short range header missed the left-hand post by inches.

Grunuik got their third goal through Kòper again, as he broke clear through the defence and just put the ball past Petran and the ball rolled back into the net. 3-0 to Grunuik. Kintaria pulled one back through Lukas Sabchot after he tapped in a low cross from Krisijana Preda.

Grunuik completed the rout after Stefan Pallensen scored a really great effort from 20 yards, curling his shot past Petran, causing raptures in the crowd. The final whistle went and the fans were again in raptures, Grunuik would go back to Kangerlussaq victors and knowing they've won their first away international....

National Rugbï Liga (NRL)

Rugby Union is another quite popular sportmin Grunuik, but it is more of a small, hard-core fan-base in the north and the west of the country. The NRL is a rugby union club tournament contested by 8 club teams from across the country. It is a game evenly played by men and women, but because of men's physically advantage, men are preferred for the game.

The season began with the All Kangerlussaq tie between Kangerlussaq RFC and Rugby Club Royal Kangerlussaq (RCRK), 3rd and 4th last season, and they played out a thrilling 25-24 encounter, with KRFC taking it with a last minute Yuri Barsisson drop-goal from 25m. Lutaqaq RFC won on the opening day against Haveømir Dragons, winning comfortably 24-3. There were also wins on week 1 for Royal Rugby Club and Kangerlussaq University.

Kangerlussaq RFC 25-24 RCRK
Lutaqaq Dragons 24-3 Haveømir Dragons
Royal Rugby Club 17-10 Albusson Ice Warriors
Ittaqorqomitt 0-13 Kangerlussaq University

Kangerlussaq RFC defeated Albusson Ice Warriors in a torrid, low-scoring affair whilst just down the road, RCRK put in an excellent performance to come back from 15-3 down at half time to win 27-18 against Lutaqaq Dragons. Haveømir destroyed the University 51-13 and Ittaqorqomitt beat Royal Rugby Club 14-8.

Kangerlussaq RFC 8-6 Albusson Ice Warriors
RCRK 27-18 Lutaqaq Dragons
Haveømir Dragons 51-13 Kangerlussaq University
Ittarqorqomitt 14-8 Royal Rugby Club
