Welcome to the Cuppet, this shall be your thread for rostering, RPing, and also the thread I shall be posting results in.

The signup thread is now the OOC thread, and can be found HERE.

The list of entrants can be found in the spoiler at the bottom of this thread. There will be a bonus for rosters, and a bonus for RPing pre-MD1, as well as for any RPs following. Higher RP bonuses will be given for RPs that go beyond a simple "___ beat ___, ___ scored the goals, the fans were happy/sad/delete as appropriate". The group draw will be tomorrow at some point, and as I am away later this week, you will all have until Sunday to RP and Roster pre-MD1.

Speaking of which... the rough interim schedule:
RP cutoffs will be between 10pm and midnight on the days specified below, GMT.
28th Feb - Group Draw
-
4th Mar - MD1
5th Mar - MD2
6th Mar - MD3
-
8th Mar - Round of 16
9th Mar - Quarter-Finals
10th Mar - Semi-Finals
11th Mar - Final/TPPO

If you are rostering, be sure to include the following permissions, thanks!
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my goalscorers Y/N
Godmod scoring events Y/N
RP injuries to my players Y/N
Godmod injuries to my players Y/N
Hand out yellow cards to my players Y/N
Hand out red cards to my players Y/N
Godmod other events Y/N

Additionally, you may included as part of your roster, a skill modifier. This informs the way your team will play, with -5 being the most defensive and +5 being the most attacking.

Format will be 8 groups of 4, single round robin, who plays who in the knockouts will be dictated by who finished where in what group.

I think that's everything.
Any questions, TG me.

Operating out of the nearby Civil Citizenry due to being banned from Astograth, the Futbol Iturributako Federazioa has, like for the previous edition, managed to gather a team of Iturributan players to head out to the World Cuppet in the distant Polar Islandstates. Anti-separatist elements in the Grand Duchy's upper echelons have made sure to condemn both the tournament and the teams taking part, considering them a threat to national security and integrity. The FAF hasn't made it any easier; clubs have the right to refuse to allow their players to participate, and those who are selected to play for Iturributa and Ituraitz forfeit the possibility of competing for the Astograthian national team in the future.

This narrows down possible players to but a handful, mostly ageing stars with no more chances of playing for Astograth, and younger ones who have bravely decided to eschew that possibility. Manager Aiza Sein, formerly at the helm of Iturributa United, has put together an offensive team that lines up 4-1-2-3, with a holding midfielder and two wingers to back up the formidable strikeforce. In the back he's got Cherran Zarranz, who was at the last Cuppet and now playing for VSL side Pradera FC, and Astograth national team vets Petrigai Mendiroz and Elatzar Orbizo, both with extensive careers abroad. The highly-rated Ilixo Akutain from surprise champions Echegoyan FC will be making his presence felt as well, together with Eneko Dicharry, who is one of the few men to have played for both Sporting and United, to which he adds a successful spell at Worcester Hearts of Cotdelapoms. At the front, Bayardo Urruzuno and Munio Baranzano stand out; Urruzuno is a true Sporting Iturributa legend, now firing his last shots at Urbizania Wanderers, while Baranzano is known for his exploits with Iturributa United and Eastern Chase of Civil Citizenry... and his controversial relationship with national team manager Powell Pieran.

Laurgain Erlis, former star of Ituraitz FC and the Astograthian national team, will retake his job as manager of Ituraitz and will continue to use his functional 4-2-3-1 formation. Since the restrictions are harsh, few players are willing to join the team, but a number of big names answered the call and will travel to the Polar Islandstates in an effort to improve upon last edition's poor showing. One of these won't even have to travel very far at all - Lapurdi Abaitua, long-time third keeper for Astograth, plays at FC Cape St Paul and is sure to be given the starting spot. The other keepers are no pushovers, though, as Ituraitz's proud goalkeeping tradition has produced the likes of Aurken Krestia from Ituraitz Victory and the young Echepare Larrea, champion with Echegoyan FC. Other names of note are rough left-back Odon Karrikart, smart midfielder Sein Zamarripa and Eneko Maruri, formerly at Ituraitz FC. Iratze Zarazua and Egerdi Bordato make a comeback as the team's main creators of play, while in-form Loren Dornaletze will look to apply a clinical finish to the moves. Lartaun Zomoza and Emaut Oidor, captains of Sporting Iturributa and Iturributa Racing Club, respectively, have been deemed unfit to start, but will surely be brought on as a testimonial to their contributions.

Everywhere

Everywhere is… well… everywhere. Its entry into this Cup is being managed by a cosmic entity whom you may call by the name of Infinity, and who will take the form of a humanoid being — although several times larger than any Human is — filled with a vista of stars, planets, other astronomical objects, and the depths of space. (You might, perhaps, remember him from his occasional appearances in Marvel Comics.) This whole business was HIS idea, and HE will be responsible for recruiting the players… although most of the actual coaching will be delegated to a human(?) who is going by the name of ‘Fred’. Because of the [obviously] verrrry wide range from which this team could draw players, Infinity has decided to field different squad for each of the early matches and then combine the best players from all of those line-ups as the side to be employed once the knock-out stages start.

La Selección Aquilliana :: World Cuppet II

Manager: Alfredo Herrera (57 y/o)
Assistant Manager: Sergio Galindo (53 y/o)
Captain: Pablo Sirici
Vice-captain: Raimundo Pineda
Style of play: Very attacking. High line of pressure, with regular overloads on the flanks (+3)

Image Image
Image Image

The management team remains the same, following Aquillian's performance in the inaugural Cuppet. The Football Association of the Dominion of Aquillian (FADA) have expressed their satisfaction with the stewardship of Herrera and Galindo, drawing attention to the "solid representation of Aquillish football" and the use of what, in many parts of the world, would be considered "unorthodox tactics".

Herrera's fluid 3-3-1-3 system, and more liberal approach to the game in general won over a lot of people in Aquillian last time out, but there are still notable barriers for the conservative island nation. Firstly, the notable absence of several talented young female players -- who all ply their trade in Osarius -- from the national team. Most prominent among the names left out were Arcaea County's promising goalkeeper Alejandra Reyes, and Utica's creative forward Christie Travis. The row over their emission spread to Osarian shores, with even Benedict di Corradi conceding that the talent of some female players was simply too great to be ignored;

"You have players like Georgina Carsley, or Serenity Lewis, and obviously my daughter Maria... who you simply cannot ignore when selecting your team. These players are as good as, if not better than the men playing in their positions [...] I think Aquillian might regret not taking Alejandra [Reyes] to this tournament in the future, because she will superb, and this is a good time to gain experience in the tournament environment. She is learning from the best Osarian goalkeeper since Enzo Corradini here, and it is a little crazy perhaps to leave her at home because she has ovaries. [...] No I don't think its a common thing, but when it happens, we must not stop their progress. If I had stopped Maria's progress and encouraged [my son] Alessandro, they would not both be playing for Firewood and Osarius now. Why settle for being father to one great player, when I can be father to two?"
- Benedict di Corradi
Director of Football, Arcaea County

While it is a possibility that di Corradi is simply talking up his favourite players -- note his failure to mention arguably the greatest female Osarian talent of the generation; Ayanna Barca-Carthy -- his words carry a weight that FADA cannot ignore for much longer. Herrera and Galindo have both already allegedly put pressure on the Islanders' governing body to allow the selection of female players, but to no avail. Their openness to change and progression does not (yet) extend beyond Herrera's tactical decisions, it seems.

The team looks built to play the same system as last time, but perhaps more dedicatedly so. The failure to select any truly orthodox fullbacks suggests a complete unwillingness on Herrera's part to compromise his tactical principles. His selection will raise questions regardless, though, as there is just one defensive midfielder, Cayo Carranza, included. Against a more competent midfield -- not unlike that of their conquerors last time around, and reigning champions, Inis na Dún -- an over-reliance on Carranza may be the Islanders' downfall.

The other major criticism of the squad is the retained Osarian influence -- it is likely that all five Osarius-based players in the squad will start regularly -- which many feel is hindering the progress of the national game.

Despite the criticisms, Herrera has seemingly picked up the cream of the crop in each position from the League of Aquillian -- with the exception of the league's top forwards, Williams and Sedilla, who are both injured -- for the national team. It is also notable that he has avoided any serious clashes of a "tribal" nature -- referring to his comments on Osarian football fan culture prior to the previous edition of the Cuppet -- by selecting players who largely trained at the same places. Most of the squad trained at the Elite Academy in Zeneca or its predecessor, which may be a crucial element in any success the Islanders enjoy. On the flipside, there is a worrying lack of experience too, with only nine of the team having represented Aquillian previously.

The squad list:

RP notes
I have no specific permissions regarding the team beyond "no killing, please" ... though I'd prefer if you cleared a major injury beforehand, I can roll with it. Do as you wish, otherwise. If it helps, Aquillian is a largely conservative, somewhat-religious nation with a lingering resentment for Osarius.

President: Horace Daley | Population: ~24 million | Capital: Genesia, Centrale

A moderately conservative, somewhat-religious nation with a lingering resentment for Osarius, their former colonial oppressors.
If you want a RL reference point, this nation is supposed to be a cultural, social and political mélange of Mexico and Jamaica.

I will sometimes RP in an approximation of Jamaican Patois. Apologies in advance ;)

Zenega Squad

Postby Zenega » Tue Feb 28, 2012 1:45 pm

Zenega
World Cuppet 2 Tournament Squad

The Zenega National Team is a mix of players playing in the Zenegalese national league, of which Zaire-74 and Galoya-Galere are the dominant forces and best represented in this team, and players plying their trade in Tamarindia. Controversy surrounds the exclusion of Okeke Yobanna, who went missing from his club Académica in Tamarindia before the nation fell to Wight, and is suspected of plying his trade somewhere in the Polar Islandstates, possibly under another name. Three young players from the national football academy, Langemark-Poelkapelle are included for the valuable tournament experience they are likely to gain, including twins Chukwu and Iheanacho Chibuzo. Rumours persist that possibly the best Zenegalese player, Abdoulaye Bocandé, may not answer his call-up after falling out with coach Ngozi Mito Sauvé at the last Cuppet.

Zenega, officially the Republic of Zenega (République du Zénéga), is a country south of the Zénéga River in Gwaith. It owes its name to the river that borders it to the east and north. Zenega is externally bounded by the Wight Ocean to the west, Barbary Salé to the north, Kurufa to the east, and Gao to the south. It covers a land area of almost 197,000 square kilometres, and has an estimated population of about 14 million. The climate is tropical with two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.

Ouakam, the capital city of Zenega, is located at the westernmost tip of the country on the Cap-Cayor peninsula. About 2500 kilometres to the west, on the far side of the Wight Ocean, lies long-time ally Tamarindia. During the 17th and 18th centuries, numerous trading posts, belonging to various colonial empires, were established along the coast. The town of St. Louis became the capital of French West Altafrique (Altafrique Occidentale Française, or AOF) before it was moved to Ouakam in 1902. Ouakam later became its capital in 1960 at the time of independence from France.

Today Zenega is part of the Wightling Commonwealth, after previously being a member of the internationalist syndicate alliance chaired by Doctor James Sunshine of Tamarindia. When Tamarindia fell under the dominion of Wight, Zenega by default became part of the new commonwealth. The Zenegalese dislike the use of the term 'puppet', since each nation in the Commonwealth is notionally autonomous. The incumbent head of state in Zenega is Prime Minister Nnamdi Oluchi, who succeeded Comrade-General Theroux Chukwumoge when Wight imposed the commonwealth on the nation.

Manager: Ngozi Mito Sauvé
Captain: Dámaso Abu
Vice Captain: Beltane Tougas

Artist: Jean Beauchemin

Most likely to get...

Tap-In: Babacar Sylla
Scorcher: Jesse Abosi
Red Card: Onyemere Chinwema
Stretcher: Beltane Tougas

Expect the Balafons to play an optimistic attacking formation, to exploit mercilessly the oft-held stereotype of naïve altafriquan enthusiasm – this will be most evident in giving away a large number of cynical fouls and hoping not to get booked, pleading naïve altafriquan enthusiastic innocence. Commentators will be guilty of exclaiming “they do love their football in Zenega, but,” - and there is always a 'but' after the patronising opening, and then a chuckle, and then - “they're not so keen on defending, are they Ron?” But the Balafons will defend quite happily, and kick teams all over the park when not in possession, with a smile on their face. Attacking when in possession, strong in the tackle, likely to accumulate yellows and reds, happy – they really do like their football, Ron – but no mugs. Also not very good, never likely to compete in a world cup, not expecting much from the Cuppet except an interesting trip to the far north: cue commentator “they're wearing gloves Ron, they'll not cope with the stinging cold up here, for all their enthusiasm.”

Cuppet 2 Contextualisation

When Búa King of Uncertain Dimensions won a game of dice against Comrade-President Doctor James Sunshine, thereby inheriting the nation of Tamarindia and all assets therein, professors from the Tommy Flowers School of Computing in the Miskatonic University found themselves inheritors of various machines and calculators, among them the jerry-rigged computing entity nicknamed Sixteen Bits. This is how staff at the University of Anarquía described their work:
Tamarindia wrote:Programmers here at the Emigdio Venegas Centre, a research facility in the University of Anarquía, powered up a new hardware build which we have nicknamed Sixteen Bits. Splicing a flux capacitor to several HAL 9000 processors, putting it in an Enterprise warp-drive, using Culture mind interface technology for, um, interfacing and two Cyberdine T800s to drive it, we have unexpectedly created a 0.9333-level artificially intelligent sentient machine that demonstrates an Asperger Syndrome-type personality construct with an inexplicable love of football. It's immediate action was to calculate it's domestic leagues, and has been doing so ever since, now approaching 11.5 million recalculations, with OS Brigade Neurale seemingly a slight favourite with somewhere approaching 210,000 titles so far. Surprisingly it's second action was not to invent an implausible sport or create a sign-up thread destined to sink to page 77 with three signatures, as most of us humans have. Sixteen Bits second action was to post a single snapshot of the league calculation for UICA entry, and the third action: to sign up to Cuppet as a puppet of Tamarindia.

Perhaps a surprise to everyone, Sixteen Bits finished fourth in the competition, surprising the opposition with it's organisation and analysis of games. Recently, Sixteen Bits provided the Wight World Cup squad with Four Bit, a subroutine that powered the body of Al Sa'adi Gaddafi with some notable success.

We hereby declare we are not controlling Sixteen Bits 'calculation' of this tournament, as it calls what it is doing, but we have input some communication tips for SB so that it can make presentable posts, for example by suggesting it replace numbers with names for it's players. Seeing the value in this it has created a subroutine. Please bear in mind these players are calculations that ceased to exist approximately 0.21333r seconds after being recorded, and are therefore not available for transfer.

Unbidden Horde

This is the journey of the True Unbidden, the ones that didn't stray from the path, the ones who believe in the absolute faith that the Unbidden are the supreme rulers of all the land...

When Mystria was first created in the dawn of Civilization, there were seven: Fornt, Voldok, Serion, Nenya, Lirea, and Enwe. The six created creatures of the Bidden, and then Zaiden, the Lord of Chaos and Illusion, created the Unbidden. Terrified by his creatures, the six killed Zaiden, and thus, the Corruption was released into the land. The six, horrified of what they had done, went back to the heavens from whence they came.

The Bidden and Unbidden of Mystria fought bitterly for thousands of years, each side committing countless atrocities as they fought for survival. For the Bidden, the Unbidden were the outcasts; the Unbidden merely wished to survive.

And then Zaiden returned and made Yesopalitha, and cured us of the corruption.

We believe all this so far. It has happened, it is a part of history, and to not believe history is folly.

However, we do not understand.

How can the Yesopalithan government and its peoples forget about all the persecution that we went through together as a race? How can they swap the sword for the hand of friendship and alliance and actually coexist with those who killed our children and burned down our villages for no reason except that we were who we were? They say that it was the Corruption that turned us evil; no, no, no, it was the fact that we were being killed left and right until we accepted brutality, loss, and war as a part of life. That is the truth, that is why we are the way we are, and anyone that says otherwise is not right.

No, we deserve to own Yesopalitha by ourselves. A land for Unbidden and for Unbidden only, a safe haven. Perhaps in time those of the Unbidden and the Bidden can coexist. But there have been too much bad blood between us that cannot be avoided. We of the Unbidden need some time to recover...

That is what the true Unbidden Horde believes. That is what we strive for. We may be persecuted for it, be labeled "extremists", but that is also the truth.

May Zaiden be with us,

The Unbidden Horde

The Demons of the Order of the Tagawachi

We are the Demons of the Tagawachi. When Zaiden created the Unbidden, he gave some of his subjects the ability to practice magic. The best ones were known as the Tagawachi.

We do not have to obey the laws of the Dark Council. Provided that we do not harm the Yesopalithans and that in extreme times of need we aid Yesopalitha, we are free to live in whatever way that we wish, free from government observation.

The most powerful of the Tagawachi are the Twelve. These demons have the power to destroy the planet if they wished to. Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Light, Dark, Life, Death, Entropy, Gravity, Time, and Aether are the most powerful, and if they were to ever fight... It wouldn't be pretty.

We are the elite of Yesopalitha, and we will do whatever it takes to keep our land safe.

So, you want to come and visit the Federation of Polar Islandstates, eh? For this Cuppet thing? Well, you'll be pleased to know that the powers that be have designated every match a free ballot event. That's right, just apply, and you should get yourself some tickets. The locals are also very interested, and will look to be filling out the stadia. So without further ado, let's have a look at where you'll be playing...

Nasjonale Stadion - 67,481(Franz Josef City)
Home to the Terns, as well as hosting such nationally important matches as the Latitude Cup final, the Nasjonale is famous for its cauldron like acoustic design. This is a loud stadium, make no doubt about it. It will play host to group stage matches, a quarter final, and the final itself.
Image

The Barge - 32,340 (Bjarnarey)
By day, this floating stadium - part of a pontoon system that makes up most of the city of Bjarnarey - plays host to surprise Globe Cup qualifiers FC1. Bjarnarey Flotilla. It is unique in its floating nature, and has recently undergone a modernisation. Here, it will play host to group stage matches, and the third place play off.
Image

Landstadt Stadion - 54,195 (Franz Josef City)
A frequently noisy stadium, and well used to success, this is the home stadium of SK Franz Josef City, the Federation's most successful football team. It will play host to group stage matches, a round of 16 match, and a semi final.
Image

Millerntor Arena - 41,592 (St Paul)
Playing host to FC Cape St Paul, this large stadium will be featuring group stage matches, a round of 16 match, and a semi final.
Image

Victoria Stadium - 51,293 (Jan Mayen)
Home to the highly successful and passionate fans of Jan Mayen Islanders, this stadium is overshadowed by the large extinct volcano that Jan Mayen itself clings to, and will play host to group stage matches, a round of 16 match, and a quarter final.
Image

Carravale - 41,734 (Severny)
As the home of Red Star Severny, this stadium has seen changing fortunes over the years, and here will host group stage matches, a round of 16 match, and a quarter final.
Image

Rendahl Stadion - 47,911 (Franz Josef City)
Across the Elfsteijn Channel from the Landstadt, this famous stadium with its iconic four spires is the home stadium of East Franz Athletic. Here it will be host to group stage matches, a round of 16 match, and a quarter final.
Image

Mossy Park - 42,920 (Resolute)
With Resolute Storm 1913 FC playing there most days, Mossy Park will here play host to group stage matches and a round of 16 match.
Image

Stadion Nom-Nom Solberg - 45,924 (Surtsey)
FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls are the usual tenants of this old stadium, here will be ousted by group stage matches and a round of 16 match.
Image

Sivertsson Road - 28,548 (Longyearbyen)
With RSK Longyearbyen Town's topsy turvy form, this stadium has seen more than its fair share of drama, and here some group stage matches will seek to replicate that.
Image

The Workshop - 35,992 (Islay)
With Islay Town Mechanical's rapid rise from lower division side to top division side, their stadium has seen constant improvements in recent years. Still on the same site as the original workshop they used to play in, this stadium will play host to group stage matches at the Cuppet.
Image

Harbour Way - 28,385 (Aasiaat)
SK Aasiaat Harbour call this stadium home day in day out, and its unique acoustics are ideal for the cuppet, where it will play host to group stage matches.
Image

Axel Torvig Park - 25,195 (Axel Heiburg)
Sitting just in front of the grounds used by the famous Haapa-Mechelin Youth Academy, this home of FC Axel Heiburg will host group stage matches and a round of 16 tie at the Cuppet.
Image

Palace Approach - 31,392 (Northbrook)
With its harsh climate even by Polarian standards, the heated seats at this home of Northbrook Diamonds FK will prove more than welcome for those fans watching group stage matches here.
Image

Taugen Park - 28,291 (Torshavn)
With their ever growing status, Cygnus Cup holders FC Torshavn will be making improvements to this old stadium after the conclusion of this tournament.

DJOCORANGA
The Black Stars

Presenting their squad for their first ever international competition is Djocoranga, that fierce 'democratic' republic from the shores of Lake Cygnus. Their kit is coloured for the peoples of the Kilima and Matope, who inhabit the land, with the away kit coloured for the Mto River, whose importance to the nation cannot be overestimated.

TACTICS
Djocoranga play a very physical game. Lots of running, lots of full bodied tackles, and lots of aggression. They play a fairly neutral diamond formation, protecting the defence whilst leaving a reasonable gap in midfield before looking to counter attack. The captain, Kwame Traore, is the undisputed talent in the side and stands at nearly 2 metres tall, with Pepe Yeboah the main source of attacking momentum and will take most free kicks. Traore will score plenty headers from corners, and the main strikers of Ndiaye and Akiloye will obviously score most of the other goals.

The State of Külmsaar and Terra Scotia
Image
Image

The slightly controversial state of Külmsaar and Terra Scotia is the most distant and southerly of those in the Federation. Consisting of the small archipelago of Külmsaar, and the large island known as Terra Scotia, the presence of the islands is a constant 'little piece of grit hidden somewhere in between the duvet and the mattress and constant brushing and flicking won't get rid of it' in the bed of the relationship between the nations of Sargossa and Polar Islandstates. Sargossa believes the islands should belong to them, and Polar Islandstates maintains that the state government's choice to remain in the Federation is the most important part of this particular ménage à trois.

In recent years, the issue has died down slightly, and so the decision by the KaTS government to endorse entering a state team into the Cuppet - fully permitted to do so by the Polar Islandstates senate - has been criticised as an "unnecessary nose-thumbing in a westward direction" in many quarters.

Nonetheless, they're here now, and, well, we ought to just embrace that. I guess.

The two professional and successful clubs in the state, Islay Town Mechanical, and SK Sporting Juura - both on Terra Scotia - were unwilling to release any of their professional players for the tournament. However, along with a handful of players from the amateur sides on both Külmsaar and Terra Scotia, their youth teams have been made available for the tournament, featuring a couple of players from the championship winning Terns side of the latest Campeonato Rushmori Juvenil Sub-20.

Rio Blanco border crossing...

It was a stiflingly hot day as one of the busiest points across the entire Greater Sargossan Republic's road system descended into its usual brand of bad tempered chaos. Shouting, swearing, endless car horns, the chorus was deafening. On one side of the barbed wire forest that lay across the main road between Ibarra and Delgadopolis flew the blue and white horizontal stripes of Santazuela. On the other stood the blue and white vertical stripes of Costa Azula. Dominating both flags was the massive trident banner of Sargossa. Just in case there was any doubt as to who actually called the shots around here.

On both sides of the divide uniformed members of the local security forces searched vehicles with varying degrees of thoroughness. Sure vigilance was essential as Jarque's Santazuelan separatist movement continued to build momentum. But it was really, bloody hot. Such were the thoughts of Carlos Lopez, corporal in the Santazuelan militia, as he flagged down a battered minibus. He clambered aboard and was faced by a dozen or so nuns. He blinked. No, they were still nuns. "Err . . . your destination?" He asked the driver.

"Taking the sisters 'ere, that's the Blessed Brides of the Beloved Father to you and me, to a theological conference at De La Croce."

"Erm . . . wait there."

He clambered back down. "Psst, Serge. Question for you."

"Yes, what is it?" His superior answered sharply, trying vainly to massage away a heat induced headache.

"Erm . . . what's our policy on nuns?"

"Nuns?"

"Yep, got a bus full. The Blessed Brides of the Beloved Father."

" It's far too hot for this conversation Corporal. Either search them or wave them through."

He waved them through. "Not sure I fancied searching them, they were all a little on the large side. And one of them had a beard."

"Big and beardy eh? Clearly the Beloved Father has a type. The kinky bugger."

"Ha! Yeah, probably explains the football boots too."

A Brief History of the McLaughlin Islands

Two centuries ago Joshua McLaughlin, concerned about the deteriorating quality of his arable land, left his Snaith farm taking with him his wife, four sons and four daughters, and set sail in search of new lands. In fact, they sailed for just twelve miles before striking land. The islands they discovered seemed fertile enough for their needs, so they settled on the larger of the two and set about breeding - both their livestock and themselves.

Today, the McLaughlin Islands remain a dependency of West Zirconia, sharing their allegiance to the Grand Duke, their use of the West Zirconian crown and their inexplicable affection for meerkats. The two islands, McLaughlin Magna and McLaughlin Parva, are both inhabitable, although most of the population live on McLaughlin Magna, simply on account of it being bigger.

Emigration is nil, and for that matter, so is immigration. The current McLaughlin population is around 750.

The McLaughlin Islands have previously competed in the World Cup (though, curiously, not the Baptism of Fire), but are nowadays satisfied with providing a domestic team which was recently promoted to Division Two of the West Zirconian National League.
