Roster
Players are colour-coded blue if male or pink if female.

Most of the team is unchanged from the McLeod Cup VI lineup, although they now have vastly more experience. How could they not? Most of them were schoolkids then! Babbageball (as the Kytlerians call it) has been promoted heavily in schools as a safe alternative to contact gridiron, hence the utterly youthful team in it. A professional league is coming after these Championships; the university leagues are the top level of the sport right now, bizarrely for a nation that's not noted for collegiate sport.

Offense
The team will usually use two screen backs, using lateral passes to create downfield passing opportunities. The two other receivers line up on the outside of the field, and will utilise different routes according to the situation - their role is analogous to gridiron WRs, and indeed they are referred to as "wideouts". This differs from "textbook" strategy where each of three assignments get run by one receiver, and only one screen back is used. Occasionally, the team will opt to use three screen backs and no quarterback (analogous to the "wildcat" in gridiron).

Substitutes are used frequently, although Morris will snap every down, while Benson will be QB on most downs.

Snapper: Colin Morris [20, played both gridiron and Babbageball at school, now focused on the latter]
Quarterback: Alan Benson [21, ex-University of Roddens gridiron QB before being injured by a sack in second year]

Screen backs:
Arika Sini [20, multi-sport athlete now specialising in Babbageball, of aboriginal descent]
Ciara Wendell [31, former naval officer and heptathlete, will play QB when Benson is injured or on Code Orange downs]
Matthew Snowdon [19, rugby centre who now specialises in Babbageball, the main offensive threat]

Wideouts:
Arne Aarland [20, prolific touchdown scorer at both school and university level]
Sasha Elmore [19, leading female touchdown scorer in university Babbageball this year, only took up game after McLeod Cup VI]
Georgina Major [20, track star turned Babbageball star]

Defense
The team will line up with two rushers in short-distance situations, and one rusher otherwise. Two middles, two safeties, and a nickel (on single-rusher sets) complete the defense. Occasionally, the nickel will drop back into deep zone coverage to allow for two chargers, particularly if it is perceived that the opposing QB will react badly to the pressure.

Rushers:
Jane Cornelis [33, retired ballerina now working as a choreographer in musical theatre]
Joke van Dyk [20, inspired by Cornelis to abandon ballet for Babbageball as she recovered from anorexia in school; first name pronounced "Yo-keh"]
Gerrit Dekker [22, went to top university on gridiron scholarship and ended up focusing on Babbageball instead]

Middles:
Crublig Pinteps [26, former university linebacker until concussed in a game, the poster child for Kytlerian Babbageball promotion]
Eric Lobsiger [21, taken raw to McLeod Cup VI but now a university standout]
Hahnea Cagenil [21, budding musical theatre actress, has recorded a corny power ballad as the official song of these Championships]

Safeties:
Ocilla Dotos [30, gold medallist at the Lasft Olympics in the women's 100m]
Stewart Ingram [21, another school-turned-university standout, will be the nickel as required]
Ali Ayotumu [19, defensive touchdown leader in university play]

The cut-off will be in just over an hour...

"What?"

"You heard me"

"Green Jello Salad? Sounds like a tasty yum-yum, not a nation"

"Yum-yum it may be, but we lost to 'em fair and square"

"But....aren't we the Black Unknowns?"

"Yes, they call us that. Kinda corny, but that's what it is."

"Soo..... can't we do anything? Beat anyone?"

"Well, y'see, we're only called that because, to this day, nobody knows just who plays on the national Babbage Rules football team"

"But the sport's so damn popular in Carmadin!"

"Well, yes it is. But that dosen't mean we can beat anyone"

"But surely Green Jello Salad would just....sit there and jiggle?"

"Well, they jiggled with some skill, and beat us"

"We get beat a lot, don't we?"

"Yes, yes we do. D'you know, in 16 (IC) years of Babbage Rules Competition, we've never managed to even enter into the Cup?"

"....wow"

"Well, we can hope this is the year!"

Green Jello Salad "Salad Shooters"
7th Babbage Rules Football World Championship

The Salad Shooters don't use the same athletes all the time on either side of the ball. Neither do the players always take up the same positions when they are on the field. The men all play rugby league as their primary sport, and the women all play netball. It's an odd but workable mix, once the men understand that they can pass forward and the women realize that anyone on the field is allowed to score.

The two lists are each roughly ordered by playing time and all-round skill, best first.

Men:
Ian Snow (*)
Joseph Watkins (*)
Tyler Macleod (*)
Mike Cook
Ashton Woodruff (*)
Terry Christensen
Richard Benson

Women:
Claire Burns (*)
Julie Romney
Reagan Lawrence (*)
Caroline Douglas (*)
Alexandra Palmer (*)
Leah Lloyd (*)
Rebecca Smith

Starred players were also Salad Shooters in their last World Championship appearance.

No problems for the home nation as they got the World Championships of Babbage Rules Football underway at Wilkinson Stadium in front of a near-capacity crowd of 35,964, by far the largest ever seen for a Babbageball game in The Kytler Peninsulae. Western Cuba, a nation with genuine sporting heritage - particularly in baseball - were put to the sword 46-7, with the offense scoring a touchdown in every quarter and the defense also picking up points courtesy of no fewer than six stuffs. Western Cuba did very briefly threaten to get into the game with a touchdown on their first second-quarter possession, but their only scoring in the entire game after that was a solitary stuff in the fourth quarter with the game already lost.

Ciara Wendell led the way for the Kytlerians with two eight-point TD passes on Code Orange downs, Arne Aarland and Matthew Snowdon making the receptions. Snowdon, 19, has already participated in two international competitions before this one - McLeod Cup VI and the TKCRU Festival of Rugby, the latter as part of a school team that won an under-16 event - and looks every inch the veteran, especially as he now has facial hair. "I grew it for this competition so people could tell I'm not naive," he told reporters. He certainly isn't on the field of play, picking up short passes just in front of the line of scrimmage seemingly at will and then taking off. A scintillating touchdown run from inside his own half on fourth down in the second quarter - picking up a short pass underneath a defensive coverage focused on the wideouts already ahead of the halfway line - set the game alight, and epitomised his awareness and athleticism. At that point, the Kytlerians led only 12-7, but that TD and the subsequent conversion made it 19-7, the following possession was a stuff too for 21-7 at the end of the half, and the second half was a procession.

In the other games, the standout performance was arguably Karditan's 52-16 destruction of Tekcirb in Edencliff, while game of the day for drama was easily the 34-28 win in Vengife for Babbage Islands colony Green Jello Salad - a novel collection of rugby league and netball players with no discernible player specialisation - over the experienced Carmadin.

Team Make Waves @ Babbage Rules Championship

Pool A Summary
The Pool A games went as planned as the ranked teams beat the unranked teams. Civil Citizenry beat out Homelands our 38-10 and The Kytler Penn. destroyed Western Cuba 46-7. It seems as though the standings may have been decided before the games began.

Pool B Summary
The huge game here was (unranked) Karditan, beating (#27) Tekcirb 52-16. Call it beginners luck, call it BS, or call it a breakout performance, but you can't argue with stats. (#16) Kerbleakistan also took down (#31) Megadia 51-20.

Pool C Summary
Although Vettrera's (#18) game wasn't the shocker of the century; it did show that Vettrera didn't come here to play. 'Da Ballers tried their hearts out in the game against (unranked) TyMason and came out with a 41-10 win. (#7) Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk also showed prowess as they beat (unranked) Mapletish 36-15.

Pool D Summary
#8 Thatius, managed to hold of *unranked) The Icemark with a score of 28-17.
#21 Carmadin was stunned by #29 Green Jello salad 28–34

To say that Babbage, as it is simply called in ASMV, was a budding but secondary sport would be an oversimplification. Women were given equal access and opportunity in all major sports and the need for a sport to cater to them seems a bit odd to most Vegai. And yet here is Babbage, the fastest growing sport in the Empire. Many attribute this growth to the similarities with grid ball without the violent hits. In any event the smoothness and fluidity of the game are genuine focal points for many fans.

After a bye on opening day, the Sea Dragons were ready to get things going as they faced Thatius who had destroyed The Icemark 28-17 in their opener. The result was an easy 23-7 win as the game seemed much more like an officiated practice. The 23 points scored was rather unremarkable in nearly every offensive aspect as it seemed to take most of the game for the high-octane offense to shake off the rust.

The surprise of the day was a Sea Dragon defense that smothered a very solid Thatius attack. Oityveru H'aset, Aqotho Sh'ustton, and Sodylida Tas'ranii looked like all NS superstars as the Thatius quarterback spent far to much time looking behind him rather than downfield.

Carmadin is up next and will posea solid threat after shellacking The Icemark 40-11. Hopefully the offense will get their asses in gear for this one.

The Carmadin Organization for Babbage Football is a much-pestered organization

They have been under fire to get this team into the cup

They have been implored and begged to divulge the Player's names

They have been harrased and annoyed to begin a league for the popular sport

And so, they have made the nation a deal:

We go to the Cup, we give you names
We go to the Cup, we make a league
We win, we do whatever you want

Of xourse, the leaguw will probably happen anyway

(SoRry so short and stupid)

Pushing On Dasies

Vettrera may not hold any international titles, they may not be powerhouses, and they may not be a name other nations know by heart. But in the sporting world of Vettrera, the competition takes place domestically. Huge sports like (Gridiron) Football, Basketball, and Baseball get a majority of the media attention, followed by Foosball (Soccer), Hockey, and Table Tennis. Then of course there's dodgeball, and racing, and volleyball all fighting for a piece of the pie. But Babbage is a new deal for Vettrera; nobody really knows about Babbage Rules. But the only way for sport to gain a large amount popularity is to win an international championship, something that has never been done before. Sports can go extinct in Vettrera, the support dwindles down until theirs nothing left. It's already becoming an effort to resuscitate Babbage Rules in Vettrera, before it drowns.

Cutoff for MD3.

Owing to the fact I unexpectedly can go and visit friends for a couple of days (the excuse for which was a show I expected to be unable to see, but have found I can) MD4 will be delayed until Saturday, probably at around 1800 UTC (1400 EDT). The remaining matches will be scorinated at 2300 UTC as usual.

Note that ties are separated by PD first, then PF, then the head-to-head.

Thatius has quickly shot through the rankings of Babbage Rules Football. Right now they sit at number eight in the world, closely followed by Armorgames and Delaclava. Now the team, nicknamed the Firebirds, hopes to have more success than the last Mcleod Cup. In the Cup Quarterfinals they bested The Kytler Peninsulae, but lost to Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk in the semis. Even with a semifinal berth in the last Cup, they hope to improve and make it to the final of the Cup, or at least win the Plate. Who knows, with this team, anything can happen. Newly recruited Nikola Šoštar, Jelena Levtić, Nadja Ivanović, and Emily Hjati brought new blood to the team, and after long winter practices, seem to be ready to take on the worlds best in Babbage Rules.

(more RPing to come about first two matchdays)

Sporting Magazine Interviews Zarahemla Maclaren

We had a brief chat with Zarahemla Maclaren, captain of the Space Cadets and the national Babbage rules team, during pool play of the 7th world championships now in progress in The Kytler Peninsulae.

Sporting: Nice to see you, Zara. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us.
Maclaren: On a night like this I must be a glutton for punishment. (chuckles) You're welcome.
Sporting: Vettrera gave the Bumblebees a hard time out there.
Maclaren: They're a side determined to make some noise. TeShawn Knightley's got an arm on him. And that teenager (Dakota) Johnson runs short routes as well as anyone I've seen in a long time. She caught me out a couple of times, I'm sorry to say.
Sporting: Getting beat happens. But when's the last time you lost by over 20?
Maclaren: I try not to think about it. Maybe beating up on Alphabet Soup did more harm than good. Maybe we let up a bit.
Sporting: And now you need to win out.
Maclaren: Pretty much, if we want a shot at the title. You can afford one bad pool game but not two.
Sporting: TyMason are next, then Mapletish. Any thoughts on those two?
Maclaren: Mapletish only lost to Vettrera by a touchdown. They have some talent and are plus on net points. I think we can keep TyMason contained, everyone else has.
Sporting: Will this be the last world championships for clan Maclaren?
Maclaren: Maybe for the three of us playing together. But don't forget the twins. Thomas and Kathleen are both 18 and playing for Dickinson College.
Sporting: True. They didn't go pro young.
Maclaren: They may be the smartest of all of us. Audrey and I should both finish up our degrees in the next year or so. But there's a lot to be said for getting an education first.
Sporting: Even with the money you've made.
Maclaren: You can have a high-performance brain a lot longer than your body can stay in top shape.
Sporting: Well said. Although there's nothing wrong with your—oops, I mean…
Maclaren: Thanks. I'm glad people still like to look, even though there are more important things in life.
Sporting: Indeed. We'll continue this another time. Thanks again.
Maclaren: My pleasure.

Good times in The Kytler Peninsulae, and a quick map search for Aels…

As the national rugby league thirteen prepare for their trip to Rugby League World Cup 10 at an unexpected locale, the eyes of Green Jello Salad sports fans are turned for now to a niche sport: Babbage rules football. The Salad Shooters last played at a Babbage code championship three editions ago, but nine of the fourteen team members from the fourth championship represent the nation at the seventh.

One of the new players, Julie Romney, is poised to be our breakout star if the Salad Shooters continue their winning ways. She caught two touchdown passes against #21 Carmadin, including the game winner in our come-from-behind 34-28 triumph. Romney then added two more touchdowns against The Icemark in a 34-17 win. Ian Snow has thrown for five touchdowns, and Reagan Lawrence has three interceptions in the middle. An unidentified Carmadin observer described the team as "jiggling with some skill", and co-captain Claire Burns barely contained her laughter when regaled with the quote.

But caution is advised. After a shift in venues to Santa Mordena, two tests await. First up are the powerful Andossa Se Mitrin Vega team, and the #5 Vegai can play even with any squad in the world. They have two runner-up finishes in the last four Cups and won the Bowl in the 5th tournament. Then the Salad Shooters close pool play against the #8 Firebirds of Thatius whose one loss was to the Vegai.

"Welcome to Fillydelphia Five, your number one sauce for sporting news! I'm Laurence McCarthy, Today we have exciting news from the Baptism of Fire and the Baptism of Iron, but first, some good new from the Bab- Babba- Babbage Football Champions! It's apparently a kind of football designed specifically to be co-ed. Three matchdays in, with one bye, the Karditinian team is on top of its group with a record of 2 and nothing, actually ahead of the current #1 seed thanks to point differential- with our team scoring a whopping eighty points more than its opponents. Impressive for a team we literally just picked up in a park and sent over there."

(the very young) Dakota Johnson So Far

The 16 year old from Bellmont, Dakota Johnson; loves nothing more than to be playing Babbage. She is thought of to be the youngest player in the competition, and may be one of the best. At this stage in the game, 'Da Ballers are 3-0, have racked up 109 points, and have only had 49 points scored against them. "The win that stood out to me the most had to be the one against TBI" Dakota said. "We won, by double digits; against #3 in the world. It feels good knowing we have it in us. Most of us weren't on the team, when Vettrera earned the #18 ranking. We didn't know if we were living up to a huge task, or trying to overcome a fail that the previous team had done. Either way, I think we're improving now. My goal isn't to win the Cup, or to become Babbage Rule's Poster Child. I want to break barriers, make my own rules, and then....not even live by them. I want to be someone different; I don't want to stick with the Status quo. I want to be my own person, but sometimes I don't even know who that is"
