Saugeais: A Brief Visitor's Guide

Do you like variety in your life? Then why not take a trip to Saugeais, where everything you could ever hope to do is right here. Ever wanted to hike or camp out for a weekend? The Saugeais National Forest has dozens of campsites and hundreds of trails waiting to be explored. Fancy the nightlife? Montbenoit is your place to be, with the capital boasting not only the biggest shopping district in the region, but also some of the best bars and clubs as well. Situated on the coast of Lake Branta, you won't have to look far to go water-skiing or para-sailing. And our miles upon miles of ever-extending beaches are the perfect place to relax a long, hard day of waterfront activities. This event is, of course, taking place in the summer months with constant temperatures around 80°F (26°), so no need to worry about the cold; only the precipitation would slow you down in our country.

________________________________________________________________________________
Stadia info:

Stade de Montagne, Montbenoit
Image

The host group, Group A's matches, as well as the finals, will be played in Montbenoit. The capital is home to the national football stadium of Saugeais, Stade de Montagne, which can hold 68,500 fans. Placed in the entertainment district of metropolitan Montbenoit, it is not far from any nightlife venue or shopping area that can appease fans to spend their money. Tourism has long been Montbenoit's strong suit, with the city being compared to a "London mixed with Shinjuku", having both bits of historically old and the flashy new to appeal to all walks of life.

Hawkshead Point, Ville-DuPont
Image

Group B's matches will be played in Ville-DuPont, a very quaint, rustic town that only started fielding a football team in 1991. Situated on the northern edge of the Saugeais National Forest, the Ville-DuPont economy is centered around logging, slowly becoming the national leader of lumber production and exports. The stadium they will be in is Hawkshead Point, a 37,550 all-seater venue that has seen its fair share of joy and sorrow in the past 20 years. The latter has also led to the decline of tourism drawn to the area because of football. Hopefully with the arrival of the Copa Rushmori crowd, the amount of revenue the matches and tourism bring will upgrade the local team and the stadium.

Tapandie Stadium, Metalton
Image

Group C will take place in the industrial city of Metalton, where they will play at the high-tech Tapandie Stadium. Able to hold 36,000 fans, the stadium boasts that it has the cleanest pitch in all the world, as rarely has there ever been pock marks or divots, not even browned grass has shown up on the pitch. It really is the perfect playing field. The city of Metalton has become one of the fastest growing cities in the country, with its ever expanding mining industry and subsequent iron works industry. The Metalton Domestic Iron Works Foundry is the largest producer of iron in the country, creating iron for everything from I-beams to truck chassis. A statue of a miner holding a pick-axe above his head pays tribute to the 21 miners that died in a mine collapse in 2002.

The Old Forest Stadium, Bugny
Image

Group D's matches will take place in another forest town: Bugny, and it's home pitch, The Old Forest Stadium. Seating 49,600 with the backdrop of the Saugeais National Forest outside of the stadium, one cannot picture how breathtaking a match at "The Forest" can be. Of course, with the help of a championship caliber football club, Bugny FC, it really isn't hard to get out for a match on a Saturday. The town of Bugny is situated with the forest to the north end, with the Iban Lake and trailing Bugny River to the east, making Bugny a perfect summer getaway if Montbenoit is too steep of an option. Bugny's economy is divided between logging and fishing, the latter more well known, as aside from being one of the main tourist reasons, also holds the country's National Fishing Championships every August.

Circle Stadium, Longview
Image

Group E will be in the venerable wind tunnel that is Longview. This blustery city is home to some of the country's strongest tornadoes. The resident club team, named after the natural phenomena, play in Circle Stadium (cap. 37,500) named so in honor of the founder of the club, Stephen Circle. With so many wind storms and tornadoes every year, Longview is home to most of the country's wind power plants. They generate enough energy to power the entire southern half of the country. Unfortunately that same energy can't transfer to the people, as most of the population are very apathetic to the rest of the nation, much less the rest of the world. It'll be interesting to see how they handle the influx of tourists for this tournament.

Pitape Stadium, Gilley
Image

Group F's matches will be played on the grounds of Pitape Stadium in Gilley (cap. 47,850). With the home club, Gilley FC, recently winning the Premier League title, there have been major upgrades within and around the stadium, including a 5,000 seat increase to capacity, to make it the most fan-friendly stadium to visit within the league. Added concession stands, souvenir shops, bathrooms, not to mention cozier press and VIP boxes, have made this stadium one of the most modern venues for this entire tournament.

Playing Style: When watching the National Team play, one will immediately notice three things. The first would be passing. Wonderful one touch and multitouch passing from all sorts of ranges. The second, tying into the passing aspect of the game, is possession. A player may receive the ball and maneuver around the field for more then 15 seconds. The first two combine to form the simple philosophy of 'if they can't touch the ball, they can't score." The third thing would be skill both on and off the ball. All Erathi players, even the goalkeeper, are expected to have at least decent technical skills. This results in flashy moves and passes from all positions. Off the ball players roam around and change positions with one another, thus requiring players to be skilled in all facets of play.

Goalkeepers:

1- Roberto BENNEDETTO (Team: FC Mildrid)
Height: 6’4’’ - Weight: 193lbs – Age: 23 years old
Roberto Bennedetto is is the best goalkeeper in Erathore. No doubts about that. He surpassed Galigilygano as the best keeper of the modern day when he put on a flawless display in the 55th World Cup. During his young career, he has won the Seria-A golden glove twice and has won it in the King’s Cup. With so many years in front of him, we could possibly see Bennedetto become the best keeper in the world. He has taken over the role of the captaincy from Alexio Del Nieran and he excels at commanding the team. He has returned from an njury that prevented him from competing in the 49th Cup of Harmony, but will be benched as he is still recovering.

12- Hérion GALONLOTH (Team: Iturributa United--Astograth)--Elf
Height: 6'4’' – Weight: 179lbs – Age: 1122 years old
Looking not a day over the age of 20, Hérion Galonloth is one of the better keepers in Erathore. He looks set to make as big of an impression internationally as he has with Royal Vosaroni Anetenelli as he only conceded 24 goals as RVOA destroyed their Seria-C competition. He is the perfect combination of size, reflexes, and speed.

Caps: 27, Goals: 0

19- Nathon Quin (Team: Arsar)
Height: 6'5’' – Weight: 192lbs – Age: 26 years old
Due to his age, Alessio Afonoso Galigilygano has retired from international football, leaving a goalkeeping hole that needed to be plugged. Enter 26 year old Nathon Quin, Seria-A season eight golden glove runner up. Thanks to him, Arsar claimed the third least goals against, despite having finished in eighth.

Caps: 0, Goals: 0

Defenders:

2-Fredrico MANLIO (Team: Manlio)
Height: 6' - Weight: 176 – Age: 26 years old
Fredrico Manlio is the great-grandson of Diauiditori Manlio, the great striker of Erathore and founder of the Manlio football club. However there are some on the team who resent him for his connection to Manlio. Despite the immense pressure that comes with this relationship, Fredrico performs very well, almost flawlessly.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: B - Morale: A - Form: A
Caps: 108, Goals: 8

3-Vanni DEL NARAN (Team: Cap Nordique-CDP)
Height: 5'7'' – Weight: 161 – Age: 23 years old
Since being placed on the national team, Naran has found that his domestic and international game have improved immensely. He has crisp passing, good heading, good standing tackles, good speed, just an all around good player. Due to poor performances, Barino Dino was dropped from the squad and Del Naran will be starting in his spot.

Caps: 45, Goals: 1
U-21 Caps: 10, Goals: 0

4- Blake FENCON (Team: Arsar)
Height: 6' - Weight: 172lbs – Age: 27 years old
Blake Fencon is another national team debutant seeking to make an impression as he takes over Nero Romo's position. Romo was not included in the squad by personal request, citing that he needed some rest for the upcoming season. Fencon's big advantage over Romo is his speed and endurance. Nero Romo is not a particularly quick defender, nor does he posses enough stamina to move up the field as part of the attack like Blake Fencon is able to.

13-Chris WILNERD (Team: Juvillian Martinax)
Height: 6' - Weight: 181lbs - Age: 25
Chris Wilnerd is the highly physical hardman captain of Juvillian Martinax. He's over 180lbs of pure muscle packed into a six foot frame. He is wonderfully supreme in the air, dominates with standing tackles, and is exceptionally incredible at slide tackling. He plays a very physical game, attempting to push opponents off the ball before resorting to a bone jarring tackle. That being said, he doesn't play dirty and looks down on players who dive. A player who dives can expect to be on the receiving end of a little love tap in the ribs by Wilnerd sometime during the game.

16-Victor PIQUÉ AMBORSIO (Team: EMI FC)
Height: 6’3’ – Weight: 168lbs – Age: 21 years old
Victor Piqué enjoyed his time at Drogba FC and impressed many people during his 148 appearances for the club along with 6 goals. That, along with his speed, power, and exceptionally good technical skills, drew the attention of several top-notch domestic and international clubs. However it was Tinuviel who managed to snag the youngster for roughly 6¥. However he experienced a disastrous season with Tinuviel as the club was relegated. Amborsio was made team captain midway through the season due to his exceptional form in a sea of poor team performances and was voted to be the team player of the year and the end of the season. He made it known that he wished to leave and was soon snapped up by EMI FC.

Midfielders:

5-Julio LANZIANO (Team: Valengren Kickers-QPEMA) -3rd Captain
Height: 5'7'' - Weight: 159lbs - Age: 25 years old
Julio Lanizano is one of the premier midfielders in Erathore. He might be small but Julio makes up for it with speed, a sublime left foot, wonderful technical ability, and pure skill. He knows when to pass, when to carry the ball, and when to shoot. There is no other Erathi that can play the all important defensive playmaker position like he can.

Caps: 72, Goals: 17

6-Espen Úpaddol ROLODEL (Team: Niccostrato) --Elf
Height: 6' - Weight: 153lbs - Age: 3264 years old
The first non-human player in Erathore, Rolodel has proved that you don't have to be human to be good at footy. In 47 appearences for FC Mildrid, he found net 37 times, earning him the golden boot and several other awards. He completed a shock move to Niccostrato as he saw himself being relegated to the bench due to several international powerhouse midfielders being brought into the team. Rolodel blends speed, power, and skill together to form a weapon that he uses to deadly effect.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale A - Form: A
Caps: 76, Goals: 21

7-Alexio Del Nieran (Team: SK Franz Josef City--Polar Islandstates) CAPTAIN
Height: 6'1'' – Weight: 165lbs – Age: 25 years old
Alexio Del Nieran is undoubtably one of the best players in the world. He has won leagues and cups in three different nations with 5 different teams. In his first season in Cafundéu, playing with Dunboor FC, scored 57 goals in 80 appearances and won the Dunboor State Championship, Emperor's Cup, and the Cygnus Cup, for which he was the top goalscorer in the first two and probably was for the Cygnus. (OOC: I cannot make the claim that he won the golden boot do to other nations having competed. However, as he was the top scorer for Dunboor, who won the tournament, it is safe to say that he won it). He looks to regain the faith of the Erathi people, and it is expected that he will have no problem doing that. He has lost the captaincy to Roberto Bennedetto but there is no hard feelings between the two or between Del Nieran and Planeto Socrato (the coach of the national team). He is the first Erathi to reach 100 caps and is the record holder for appearances and goals scored. He has moved on from Cafundéu after an incredibly successful run that saw him cement his place as one of the worlds best. He now looks to ply his trade in Polar Islandstates. He is incredibly fast and agile, has top class technical ability, and a wonderful leg. He has been played in a multitude of positions during his life. Attacking midfielder for EMI FC, FC Mildrid, and Dunboor FC and as a striker for Avidia United and Cafundéu do Juta. He has also been played as a winger on several occasions and as a playmaking midfielder. His role in the national team over the past World Cup cycle has evolved from a pure attacking midfielder to more of a trequartista.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A
Caps: 113, Goals: 75

8-Isidoro NAO (Team: FC Cape St. Paul--Polar Islandstates)
Height: 5’10’’ – Weight: 160lbs – Age: 21 years old
Nao is another of one of the stand out players on this DBC team. He won the golden boot in his first season with Litala '93 and is expected to do big things for the club. Isidoro is know for his technical ability, creativity, pace, and ability to read the game. He has been described as a player whose vision and imagination make him an unpredictable opponent. He looks set to make a huge impact in Polar Islandstates as he completed a move from Litala to FC Cape St. Paul after the 49th Cup of Harmony.
Rating: A – Team Relationship: B – Morale: A – Form: A
Caps: 71, Goals: 24
U-21 Caps: 12, Goals: 8

14-Marcello ALONSO Defon (Team: Hastmead Diamante CFC--Osarius)
Height: 6’ – Weight: 172lbs – Age: 21 years old
Alonso is the man you want in midfield to start attacks. No one his age passes better then him. No one can hit a player with a long pass with his level of accuracy. No one can predict his teammates runs as well as he can. He is the passing master. He also boasts a wickedly powerful and accurate shot, especially from long ranges. He has average footskills, which is fine, as he prefers to pass the ball along to a teammate. He has won two Osarian King's League titles with Diamante.
Rating: A – Team Relationship: A – Morale: A – Form: A
Caps: 30, Goals: 6
U-21 Caps: 12, Goals: 1

17-Anthony ROJAS (Team: Charzzan)
Height: 5’7’’ – Weight: 146lbs – Age: 19
Anthony Rojas is a technically gifted midfielder who can blow by the opposition with his high speed, maneuver his way around them with his brilliant footskills, or just take a powerful and accurate long range shot on goal.
Caps: 0, Goals: 0
U-21 Caps: 0, Goals: 0

18-Daiki Kaoru Ryota “Daiki” (Team: Bugny FC- Saugeais)
Height: 5’10’’ – Weight: 141lbs – Age: 19 years old
After scoring 15 goals in 30 games for Bugny FC in his first year and claiming a bronze boot and league title, Daiki turned many heads for his wonderful pace, technical ability, and finishing power. He received three U-21 friendly call-ups, scoring twice, before being called up for a senior team friendly in which he scored. This past season, he helped lead Bugny to a 4th place finish, scoring 23 goals in 30 games to claim another bronze boot.
Caps: 1, Goals: 1
U-21 Caps: 7, Goals: 3

20- Rafa DiSantos 'DiSantos' (Team: Niccostrato)
Height: 5'7'' – Weight: 143lbs – Age: 17 years old
Rafa Di Santos is a passing specialist who plays for Nicostrato as a playmaking midfielder. He has better then average technical ability and wonderful first touches. He also has a very strong and accurate shot. His passing, both long and short, is incredible.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A
Caps: 3, Goals: 1
U-21 Caps: 0, Goals: 0

22-Kimo Aberri “Aberri” (Team: AF Mildrid)
Height: 6'2'' - Weight: 160lbs - Age: 18 years old
Kimo is a great defensive midfielder who has a wonderful future ahead of him. He is exceptionally fast and incredibly strong for his age. He has not been blessed with footskills though, but he doesn’t have the need for them anyways. He has great short passing and good long passing. These allow him to be the general in the midfield when he plays. He usually plays as a deep lying playmaker operating from the defensive midfielder position. This is arguably the most important position in all of Erathi football as the incredibly effective Passe e Posse playing style revolves around that position.

Forwards:

9-Camthalio RINGËRIL (Team: Royal Vosaroni Anetenellli) -VICE-CAPTAIN
Height: 5'9'' - Weight: 139lbs - Age: 3338
Two years ago he was no one. An elf who was about to have his professional debut in the Erathore Seria-C. He scored 48 goals in 38 games and finished first in Seria-C. 'Easy competition.' 'One time wonder.' That's what what people said. Those sayings have been put to rest. 101 goals in 76 Seria-B appearances.11 goals in the King's Cup including a hat trick against FC Mildrid in the final. 11 goals in 5 games in the Copa Del Era including a hat trick against Juvillian Martinax in the final. Seria-B Champion, King's Cup Champion, Copa Del Era Champion, winner of the Palla dell'oro, Golden Tree, Golden Boot, and Forward of the Year awards. His speed is unmatched. His shots are the strongest, fastest, and most accurate I have seen in my lifetime. He has wonderful dribbling and passing skills. He can talk to the ball, ask it to do things it wouldn’t normally do. He is a free kick master. He can bend the ball over and around the wall, as well as knuckle ball it. He is perfectly adept at using the left or right foot. He is also capable of striking the ball powerfully and accurately with his instep and outsole, enabling him to score from just about anywhere. He has stated his intention to stay at Royal Vosaroni, but also mentioned that he wouldn't mind moving abroad.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form A

10-Ricardo VILLA (Team: Indica United-Southern Cynocephali)
Height: 175cm – Weight: 71kg – Age: 21 years old
Nicknamed Le Bambino Dorato (The Golden Kid), Villa is one of the best Erathi strikers there are. He is immensely skilled both on and off the ball. He is deadly from 35 yards in.
Rating: A – Team Relationship: A – Morale: A – Form: A

U-21 Caps: 12, Goals: 16

11-CESC Celestino (Team: Eldorado-Cafundéu)
Height: 5'7'' – Weight: 159lbs – Age: 23 years old
Cesc Celestino is a wonderful forward who, at the age of 18, was the subject to a $21 Million deal to the best league in the world. With 6 goals in 5 U-21 games and 8 goals in 11 appearances for the senior team, Cesc is undoubtly the most accomplished player of his age. A product of the FC Mildrid Youth Academy and a promising striker FCM slipped him into the senior squad at age 17. He was named player of the week during his professional debut game against Drago de Celio. He finished the season with several awards and 38 appearances and 23 goals. This attracted the attention of Eldorado from Cafundéu, who signed him on a $23 million contract.

15-Antonio ANTERIP (Team: Charzzan)
Height: 6'5 - Weight: 189lbs - Age: 30
Tall, commanding in the air, and very strong, Antonio Anterip is a variant from the typical Erathi forward. The typical forward has incredible technical skill. Anterip doesn't. Most Erathi forwards aren't incredibly strong. Anterip is. Most Erathi forwards are very fast. Anterip isn't. Most Erathi forwards are not a big ariel threat. Antonio Anterip is definitely an ariel threat.

21-Gaspare MALVOLIO (Team: A.F.F.----Cafundéu)
Height: 5'8'' – Weight: 163lbs – Age: 28 years old
Malvolio is incredibly quick and agile with impressive dribbling skills to match that speed as well. He also has a massively powerful and fast shot that can go from ground to goal faster then the keepers reflexes.
Rating: A – Team Relationship: A– Morale: A – Form: A
Caps: 91, Goals: 42

23-Gillispie Soradra ‘Soradra’ (Team: Niccostrato B)
Height: 5'7'' – Weight: 139lbs – Age: 14 years old
Gillispie Soradra has been a champion for all of his life. U-14, U-13, U-12 champion, the list goes on and on. Top scorer in most of the tournaments. He is incredibly skilled and will be a huge player in the future. He is outstandingly fast, has incredible technical skills, a rocket shot, he is the complete package. He is comfortable in any attacking role, striker, supporting striker, either wing, and attacking midfielder. That being said, we expect to see him play 15 minutes of the campaign at best.

Royse Peterson: Word Watcher

Well sir, this week we land ourselves a doozy thanks to a Mrs. Trellis of Achtklan, as she asks, in relation to fair Rushmore herself and ahead of the CNCR’s debut in the forthcoming regional associated futbol tournament: “what exactly is the etymology of the [redacted] word?”

Well ma’am, this week I guess I can put my feet up, and turn to no better authority than the great Candelariasian essayist, economist, theologian and raconteur Hanratty Bellend, who covered the subject during his prescient 1969 work The Currency of Muffins. Decades on, it remains perhaps the finest summing of this most intractable, controversial, of etymological quandaries.

Such men would offer a well-trodden argument that commences – and concludes! – thusly; “For how can peoples such as these, who cannot agree on the very origins of their region’s own name, possibly hope to agree on the foundation and nature of a single currency?”

Ultimately specious though this declaration may be, the confusion over the etymology of the name of Rushmore remains a source of continual consternation among those across these lands who concern themselves with such matters; a riddle that may never, in truth, be solved. Many a claim has been put forward – indeed, there exists scarcely a national entity, most particularly in the north, which has not at some point asserted their primacy in lending this sprawling region its sobriquet.

The peaceable folk of Nethertopia are not by nature given to displays of nationalist pretension, yet there are nevertheless those among their number who would proudly point to Lake Rushmore as the source of more than merely the mighty river known the Ancestor. Their claim enjoys as much merit as any and, in a region beset by temporal streams as uncertain and turbulent as any watercourse, establishing a timeline sufficient even to ascertain whether the lake was named for the region or the region for the lake is beyond problematic. The question may become moot the further one considers the matter, however. Why would it be a body of water, far from Nethertopia’s early major trading posts, that would lend its name to an entire region? What series of events could possibly have brought such a thing about? And one cannot help but note that the lake’s official name appears predated by a not inconsiderable margin by that of the ‘Lake of the Elders’, a more popular moniker among the people of that republic.

Perhaps not Nethertopia then, but alas, for one’s own patriotic inclinations, Candelaria’s claim is built upon even more sodden ground. The village of Rushmore, today home to no more than two hundred denizens, sits in the umbrage of the town of Lavange on the outskirts of a rapidly urbanised south-east. It will as likely as not become a suburb over the ensuing decades, and perhaps fall from the map altogether. Fears of its extinction have perhaps prompted the modern wave of declarations for little Rushmore’s place in regional history, including those made by wiser minds than I, but happy happenstance provides not nearly enough in which to plant the flag of a hundred nations.

We cannot doubt from where the village itself finds its name – found betwixt the no larger hamlets of Winterborn and Alma, this particular corner of the Candelarias was evidently settled by pioneers from the distant, forgotten land of D’Or Saye Ette, one of innumerable countries to supply our own nation’s earliest English-speaking colonists – but no respectable thoughts have been put forward to explain how the name of this small inland settlement may thence have been attached to the wider region.

What appears clear is that, by any scholarly reckoning, most other extant nations must be immediately discounted as potential points of origin, no matter how forceful their claims, for Rushmore as a term was in common usage long before the southern powers’ rise from isolation and indeed, in some instances, foundation. The true origins of Rushmore may lie amongst the fallen powers, in Spengemberg or Yerdua, in the Riik or the Switzish empire that once so enswathed the distant, forgotten west. If so, we may alas never know the truth.

But few of these countries were English speaking – a fact that cannot rule them out definitively, far from it, but serves to lend us hope that we may yet find answers to our etymological quest among lands still thriving. Thus our eyes must turn to the continent as it is.

As far as the residents of Rushmore, Delamawaria are concerned; our question has long been answered quite to everyone’s satisfaction. Theirs is the most populous city of that name in the region, straddling the banks of the potent Ma. It is unsurprising that tourism represents the city’s most profitable enterprise, with visitors from across the region keen to stand next to ‘Welcome to Rushmore!’ signage and attend one of the region’s largest museums dedicated to the history, heritage and modern multiplicity of the region itself. As far as Delamawarian Rushmoreans are concerned; Rushmore is the very heart of Rushmore.

And yet… A founding date for this city is hard to come by, but all evidence suggests it was far from one of the Chesapeake colony’s earliest. Contemporary traders – from Nethertopia to Switzaland, the British to the aboriginals – speak of visiting Brotherhood and Wells, Townsburg and Washington, all fine cities to this day… but there are no reports of the city of Rushmore for many, many decades. Perhaps such writings have merely slipped from our grasp. But even in the city itself there are doubts. T.H.N. Thomas, the respected Delamawarian historian of the late nineteenth century explicitly describes the city as having been named in honour of the region. His later colleague Wilson Corbett disagrees, claiming the city’s nomeclaturistic descent lies with the work of Gutzon Borglum (it is an arresting notion that, I find, that gutzon borglum are also the traditional genital adornments of the Wanke Ballus people of the south-western Muffinhed). Yet both pour regretful scorn on the Delamawarian municipality’s claims upon a very special birthplace. The dates, in short, simply do not match up.

There are plenty meanwhile who would find an aboriginal origin for the term of political expedience, and I must confess a certain romantic attraction towards the idea myself. It was that undeniably respectable compiler of aboriginal oral history, Tonka Hana, who put forward the most popular proposition for indigenous origins – and, indeed, perhaps the most popular claim on ‘Rushmore’ of them all – in the 1920s, but with the benefit of retrospection I consider his assurances speculative at best. This theory, as is well enough known, proclaims the city of Ruzmo as the centre of an aboriginal empire that sprawled, in pockets, from what are now the aforesaid cities of the Delamawarian coast all the way to the banks of Lake Branta, and perhaps even beyond. Under such circumstances, it is a simple task to imagine early English-speaking explorers mistaking Ruzmo for the name of this unnamed empire, and ultimately translating it further into a term that sits more fondly upon the English tongue and quill alike.

Ruzmo today is a wretched settlement of fewer than a thousand impoverished souls, reliant not on tribute from a continent’s thralls but upon sending a meagre crop yield to the Wiguese second city of Lopo. Can it have been that it was once the heart of the greatest empire the region has ever known?

Only in the mind of dear Mister Hana, I fear. Though his claims may have long since seeped into popular culture, there exists no archaeological evidence that Ruzmo was ever larger, never mind more powerful, than it is today. Inasmuch as it can be said to have had an administrative centre at all, Muwi was it, then as now. An aboriginal origin for Rushmore is far from an outrageous notion, but I have little doubt that little Ruzmo does not provide the answer.

“In any case, dear Ratty!” I hear my gentle reader cry, “A man such as yourself should not allow himself to be swayed by sentiment in regards to matters of such clear import”. So it is so! For Rushmore is an English word, and it is upon the English-speaking explorers and settlers, deriving from a myriad lands and who would go on to found dozens more, who we must rest the greater parcel of our hopes for resolution. It is my belief that the balance of probability lies with the notion that, centuries ago, a man of English learning did step from his ship, plant the flag of an unknown country in virgin soil, and pronounce the name of this land as Rushmore. But in honour of what, or whom?

Himself, perhaps, for families bearing the name of Rushmore – or else Rushmer, Rushmor and the like – are known throughout the region. One or more may lay claim to an infamous ancestor, but in this we can only guess. In many cases it is more likely to be coincidence at work, while in the majority the surname may have been given in honour of the region rather than the reverse, for we can note the nature of the widespread usage of names such as Albrecht and Caires in our own Candelarian islands, where such family names were evidently adopted, in most instances, to replace original surnames deemed unpronounceable to Candelarian ears or otherwise undesirable. In any case, the original Mr Rushmore is as likely to be a patron as the sailor or settler himself, or perhaps his captain. Some, certainly, have posited a link between the name of the region and the great Captain Sir Michael Ransome himself, though this appears to myself, and most, a particular stretch too far.

Of course, plenty are the names for new settlements given in respect of topography, reflecting the local terrain or wildlife, its trees or lakes. It cannot be taken as a given that our hypothetical first man was ignorant of toponymy. ‘Rushmore’ speaks for itself in this regard, namely as the place of the rushy moor, and a native of the acidic lowlands of the eastern Timonium may immediately be put in mind of his own rolling grasslands, where moths and butterflies, and the birds that feed on them, flutter over a terrain dominated by the bronzed moor grass (Molinia alfredii) and several creeping rushes of striking black and white flowers and tubular leaves.

I am further minded to note, however, that the surname of Rushmore has often been known to originate in the form of Rushmere, and I cannot help but wonder if history has repeated itself in regards to the name of our great continent. The ‘pool where the rushes grow’. It is not for me to tell you that much of the Branta and Goose Coast alike are home to such places which, as sources of water and fishes, would have represented welcome discoveries for early explorers and settlers alike (and here I cannot avoid hearing the thin voice of my dear old Religious Instruction master extol Isaiah 35:7 to a class of recalcitrant boys). Moreover, these rushy ponds and pools are the perfect habitation of Rushmore’s own dragons, the uncommonly confrontational waterfowl that, then as now, are feared and respected across the region.

Can it be so? Perhaps my little notion is as far-fetched as any, but I would find it fitting indeed if Rushmore would ultimately take its name from the terrains inhabited by that which have become, by means fair and fowl, the most unifying symbols of Rushmority. In this, I shall leave the last words of this particular discursion to Sir Michael himself when he wrote, centuries ago, and before surely Rushmore had indeed known its name, to advise those travelling in his wake to give the unnamed continent’s welcoming ponds a wide berth:

“… fore in thyss lande, thee geese do notte confyne theyselves to walkinge o’er thine grave, butte do iump up ande downe vppon it to make certane ye are deade…”

Ironically enough, that final quote is now widely acknowledged as having been misattributationized to Captain Ransome, while recent excavations in Wigu have inched scholarly thought back in favor of the Ruzmo theory, a fact that reflects the Wiguese own name for their country.

I guess that gives you a pretty thoro picture of the problem however, and one which we may never solve to anyone’s full satisfaction.

Remember, you can write me at roysepeterson@tribune.cru for all your WordWatching queries, and I’ll be right back here Monday next, y’hear?

FULL ROSTER:
(Caps in brackets indicate appearances from the bench)

Coach: Sol Kirkkegaard, 53
Sol Kirkkegaard is the finest tactical mind our nation has ever produced, and has pioneered the use of his formation, dubbed 'The Iceberg', in the national team. Has guided his teams to success almost without fail, and has a calm and cool exterior that does nothing to hint at what his calculative mind is thinking. He rarely flaps under pressure, and is well respected by fans, players, and press alike. He was the natural choice to lead our nation into the development of their first official international team, and carefully assessed the players through the exhibition A vs B and Road To The World Cup matches, the link to which can be found in my signature. Through this he developed a key core of players to rely on, and whilst many of them are reaching the tail end of their international careers now, he is nurturing a second wave of talented youngsters to lead the Terns further on with the help of U21s coach Gregorz van der Riise.

He has acquired a taste for success recently, taking the Terns to fourth and then third at successive World Cups, and all the way to runners-up in the last Copa. The public certainly expects now, but with an ageing core squad and the departure of trusted right hand man Morten Yarbin, Sol finds himself with a dilemma on his hands. Therefore, for the second Copa in a row, a host of players aged twenty-nine and over have been booted from the squad to give the younger ones a run out.

Assistant: Joachim Schwartz, 43
Brought in by Sol to cover the absence of Morten Yarbin during the last qualification campaign, former indoor soccer coach Joachim Schwartz has now been appointed the position on a permanent basis. Despite being used to coaching on a smaller pitch, he very much advocates the use of wingers, and as such has found himself at odds with Sol'd preferred tactics on a number of occasions. It is Sol's belief that this will provide a healthy and progressive atmosphere with which to coach, and shouldn't be discouraged at all. He's hard nosed, and tough to win over, but incredibly forceful and a powerful personality on the sidelines.

Assistant: Gregorz van der Riise, 37
With his shock of eye-catching platinum blonde hair, Gregorz is one of the most iconic figures in Polarian football. Once commonly seen racing down the wing for St Paul and lacing the box with crosses, he is now the full time manager of the U-21 side. And with many graduates or members of that side now in this squad, Sol has requested his presence on the touchline to help him get to know these newer players more readily.

#1 - GK - Lars Hegg Gammel - Age 28 - Saint-Urbain (Cotdelapoms) - 56 Caps, 1 Assist
Lars moved abroad to Cotdelapoms in order to try and win a place in the Terns squad, fearing he'd never get the chance if he stayed stuck behind Atle Andreasson at SK. The move appears to have paid off, replacing first Atle on the bench, and now Karlsson in the starting line up. His talent is undeniable, and his quick reactions were key to the Terns reaching the Final in the last Copa Rushmori. He made a couple of stunning saves in the second round match against Valanora at the last world cup to ensure progression, and was essential to the one and only clean sheet that we kept as we won the third place playoff against Krytenia.

#2 - DR - Thor Lossler - Age 23 - SK Franz Josef City - Uncapped
Though uncapped at the senior level, Lossler has made appearances for the U-21s, and is in the squad at van der Riise's suggestion. He's fast, and wicked with a cross, but his attacking ambitions can sometimes leave his teammates exposed. When he's focused on the defensive task at hand however, not much gets past him. An exciting prospect, he has propelled himself into the starting lineup for the league champions, and can make an international impact here.

#3 - DC - Sander Ljungberg - Age 25 - SK Franz Josef City - 41(19) Caps, 4 Assists, 1 Goal
With his movement, dependability, and extravagant tackling, Sander Ljungberg has proved himself to be a natural and worthy successor to Maarten Berg. Berg's retirement had left something of a hole in the heart of Sol's oft-favoured plans, but Ljungberg showed at the last world cup that all was not lost, providing an able sidekick to Marek as we finished third. Has a turn of speed that can keep up with almost anything any fleet-footed strikers might try to pull on him, and with Kowalski next to him, the two are sure to be hard to get past.

#4 - DC - Jan Kowalski - Age 27 - East Franz Athletic - 11(6) Caps, 1 Assist
Being thrown in at the deep end is as good a way to start off your international career as any I suppose, and Jan Kowalski did just that at the last Copa Rushmori. An imposing presence at the centre of the park for East Franz, he was a dependable substitute at the last world cup, and with the retirement of the imperious Niko Marek he will be looking to prove that the starting place in the lineup deserves to be his. Almost a sweeper, he will hang back and mop up any spillages before the keeper is needed, using his quick burst of pace to surprise attackers.

#5 - DL - Petter Marveau-Kahn - Age 27 - Sherwood FC (Civil Citizenry) - 5(1) Caps
Marveau-Kahn used to line up alongside Kowalski for East Franz Athletic, and were it not for his move abroad to Civil Citizenry he would have been the final piece in an all Franz Josef back four. A wing-back in everything but the name, Marveau-Kahn will bomb forwards to display his wicked driven crosses as often as possible. Has dual Cotdelapomais-Polarian nationality, but chose to play for his country of birth. Made a few mistakes at the last Copa that caused him to lose his spot for the world cup, but with de Huyer and Pekarik counted out of this squad due to their age, he has been given a second chance.

#6 - DMC - Jorgen Hauge - Age 25 - Battle (Zarbli) - 64(10) Caps, 12 Assists, 7 Goals - VICE-CAPTAIN
A now established played in the Zarblese Duke League, Hauge was snapped up by Battle from Cross SC a few seasons ago, and hasn't looked back since. Now a regular in the starting lineup for the Terns, his marauding presence in front of the defence means attackers can't relax for a second. A long future in the national team awaits this young lad, who is impressively large even by Polarian standards, and he has a fearsome reputation already. Is assumed to be the choice to be captain for the next qualification campaign, but for now retains the vice-captaincy. He is fast, can run non-stop for 90 minutes, can pick a pass at will, is a fierce tackler and nigh-on unbeatable in the air, as well as possessing a wicked long shot. This guy can change matches on his own and will be one of the standout performers for the Terns this competition.

#7 - AMC - Luc Demarchelier - Age 28 - Cafundó do Juta (Cafundéu) - 53(39) Caps, 33 Assists, 11 Goals
Demarchelier was a key part of the Terns reaching the third place spot at the recent world cup. More of a driving attacking midfielder than a dictatorial playmaker, Demarchelier impressed enough whilst in the now defunct Mytanar leagues to ensure plenty of playing time during the world cup, with his fantstic cross for Marek in the third place playoff thought to be one of many reasons he was snapped up by the Cafundulense giants of Cafundó do Juta. His powerful runs with the ball seemingly glued to his feet are a regular sight during the closing parts of many matches, as his stamina will terrify tiring defenders. When Demarchelier is on form, the ball seems glued to his feet, and now at last, with van Jendrisen out of the squad, this is his time.

#8 - MC - Petter Bielsen - Age 33 - Iturributa United (Astograth) - 112(15) Caps, 26 Assists, 7 Goals - CAPTAIN
Now a much loved feature of life in the Astograth League, Iturributa United midfielder Bielsen continues to be a vital player for the Terns, where his tenacity and drive to succeed is surpassed by none. Accurate and fierce in the tackle, his weaknesses are few and his stamina high. Don't expect to see mistakes from this veteran, he'll be captaining his country this tournament, and is the only exception to Sol's "twenty-eight and under" rule for squad selection. He's pretty much done and seen everything there is to in the game, and his calming presence on the pitch will be inspirational for the younger members of the squad.

#9 - ST - Amadeus Irndtor - Age 26 - SK Franz Josef City - 11(23) Caps, 3 Assists, 10 Goals
With a lethal left boot and a sixpence turning circle, this speedy youngster is finally getting his big chance, which he seek to exploit as best he can. Hasn't exactly made a sparkling start to his career with the Terns since his goals at the Brotherhood Cup, but is out there to prove his doubters wrong, and his recent performances from the bench at the world cup will have him brimming with confidence.

#10 - ST - Tomas Aer - Age 23 - Ituraitz FC (Astograth) - Uncapped
With three caps and three goals for the U-21s, Tomas Aer is a player on a mission to finally prove he can turn it out for the seniors. Has never been able to nail down a starting place in the line at Jan Mayen Islanders, and so is looking to reignite his career after the Kuril seaplane accident at Astograthi champions Ituraitz FC. He still has some way to mature properly, but he fans are adamant that this exciting striker is a diamond just waiting to be cut.

#11 - ML - Sebastian Jorgensen - Age 27 - AFC Tranzversa (Swartaz) - Uncapped
In the squad thanks to the tenacious arguing of Joachim Schwartz, Jorgensen has a chance to make is first starts for his national team depending on the formation being played at the time. Moved to Swartaz not so long ago from boyhood club Islay Town Mechanical, and the Terra Scotian outfit have certainly missed him. His lightning runs down the left often end with a drilled cross, which will suit the nimble feet of Irndtor just fine.

#12 - GK - Jan Rasmus - Age 23 - FC Axel Heiburg - Uncapped
Rasmus has six caps for the U21s, and was first choice at the Draggonnii Inviyatti. He is tall and agile, and might as well have springs in his heels for the height he can achieve with a jump, and a surprisingly long reach that confounds many a strikers' efforts. He can be a star of the future if shown the ropes, and this taste of the big tournaments is essential.

#13 - GK - Piotr Hemjann-Bezelhov - Age 21 - Jan Mayen Islanders - Uncapped
Second choice at Jan Mayen behind Mathias Marek, Hemjann-Bezelhov is another goalkeeper in a similar situation to Rasmus. Injury at crucial times has kept him out of the U-21 squads in the past, and have perhaps hindered his development as a player. He could excel however, and will be an able backup here.

#14 - ST/AMC - Alexsandr van Sorensen - Age 22 - CR Submiria (Cafundéu) - 38(33) Caps, 34 Assists, 38 Goals
Bright young prodigy Alexsandr is only 22, but is already a key and regular figure in the Tern dressing room. Played a vital role for Jan Mayen before his move to Cafundéu where he continues to impress and is learning every day. Suffers from rare brain condition synaesthesia, but manages to not let this affect his attractive attacking play. Captained the U-21s in the Draggonnii Inviyatti, and likes to link in from the midfield, playing as either a deep lying striker or a forward thinking midfielder or trequartista, applying his explosive acceleration and going on mazy dribbles that often end in a shot from his sweet right boot. Could change a game in an instant, and could become an all-time legend. Expect him to quietly rack up some impressive statistics this cycle as he claims more of a first team place following on from his vital role at the world cup.

#15 - DMC - Iulian Finnibaturinn - Age 21 - Montréal (Cotdelapoms) - Uncapped
Iulian has nine caps, two assists, and one goal for the U-21s, and although he has yet to make a first team appearance, his performances will have Jorgen Hauge and Pol Sundstrom looking over their shoulders nervously. He's a commanding presence, and likes to sit as part of a central midfield pair, supporting a more attack-minded partner and protecting the defence. He can also be used to swing free-kicks from long range for attackers to head attempts at goal, and though his shooting isn't that good he is labelled as a star of the future, and could make his first start for the national team at this tournament.

#16 - MR - Jon Kjaer - Age 23 - SK Franz Josef City - Uncapped
With six caps and three assists for the U-21s, Kjaer is a victim of Sol's tactical preference when it comes to his national side potential, and this marks his first call up. Nonetheless, he seems to have always been around, and the fact he's only twenty three catches many by surprise, as he is a regular and feared feature of the SK starting lineup. Was devastating at the first ever Ides of March Cup, and was there again to claim another medal last time around. Fast and full of tricks.

#17 - ST - Ellis Elmsvikur - Age 20 - Urbizania Wanderers (Astograth) - Uncapped
Aged only 20, Elmsvikur makes it into the squad over the more experienced Forgrossand following his impressive appearances for the national U-20 side that recently claimed the runners up spot in the first Campeanato Rushmori Juventil Sub-20, and though he may be tired following the tournament, he was lethal enough in front of goal that the coaching staff are prepared to take that risk. Transferred to the Astograthi league in order to gain more first team experience faster than he otherwise would, the decision appears to have paid off.

#18 - MC - Casper Baek - Age 27 - FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls - Uncapped
Casper is a dependable and hard-working midfielder. He has shone for Surtsey in their troubled recent seasons, and appears to have steered them back on the right path whilst he is in the peak of his form. One of the most popular figures in Polarian football amongst fans, press, and rival players alike, his call up has been applauded by many, seeing it as just reward for his effort over the years. Dynamic, chases every ball, and gives 100% every time, he's just the sort of positive player you need in a tournament squad.

#19 - DR - Zacharias Juul - Age 21 - Koppen Rig Force - Uncapped
Called up but never used in previous senior squads, Juul has once again been called up for the Copa, and this time has a better chance to make an appearance. The Koppen Rig captain at the age of just 19, now 21 he has taken them back up to Divisjon One, and at one point had ousted Thor Lossler from the U-21s starting right-back position, making nine appearances in the process. Thor has reclaimed the place in the starting lineup by virtue of his experience in the Champions' Cup with SK, but Zacharias will bide his time, aware that his chance will come eventually.

#20 - ST - Diedrich Kvitchenko - Age 20 - East Franz Athletic - Uncapped
Not called up to the Sub-20 squad after fitness fears, the player with four goals in eight U-21 appearances has been called up to the national squad to prove his versatility. At East Franz he has adapted to play a central, wide right or wide left striker role, and his height and physicality makes him the only natural target man amongst the strikers. He has proved himself in the Federation league countless times, and will leap at the chance to show his explosive attacking energy on the international scene.

#21 - DL - Robin Arnfeldt - Age 25 - Jan Mayen Islanders - Uncapped
Quietly putting in solid and understated performances week after week, Arnfeldt won't catch the eye, but you notice if he isn't playing. One of the most laid back characters you could ever meet, he wasn't expecting a call-up, but was pleasantly surprised to realise the press were applauding the decision. Calm, collected, and never panicked, if there's a player you'd want to see with the ball at his feet, facing the goal, with three attackers pressuring him, its Arnfeldt.

#22 - DC - Mikkel Hangeland - Age 23 - Jan Mayen Islanders - Uncapped
Despite nine appearances for the U-21s, Hangeland never quite made the jump to the national team. Since then however, he has been making more of a name for himself at Jan Mayen, and has really grown into his boots. With Marek leaving football altogether after this season, he has been working extra hard to prove himself a capable replacement, and will use this chance to do just that.

#23 - DC - Torre Urfstadt - Age 21 - FC Torshavn - Uncapped
Urfstadt is one of the most exciting prospects to come from the Torshavn ranks in a long time, and has been a crucial part of Torshavn's continued presence in Divisjon One. More than a few scouts from the bigger clubs have turned up to see him play, but Urfstadt claims for now he is remaining loyal. Fast, powerful, and aggressive his enthusiasm is unmatched, and once the finer points of positioning and leadership reveal themselves to him, he will be a formidable player. Expect his 6'8" frame to be a danger in the opposing penalty box as well.

TACTICS:
The Polarian game is fast, quick, and physical. They won't give you a second on the ball to think, and they won't hold back in the tackle. It is an attack minded game, though when the full backs bomb forward, expect to see central midfielders hang back to mop up any counter attacks. In the centre of the park they will play a possession based midfield game, though a defence splitting pass could come at any moment towards the fast and direct strikers.

Open to suggestions in the presence of a changing squad, Sol has decided that three formations will be played at the Copa Rushmori, one from each coach, so check the prior RP to see which line-up is being played for each match.

The Astograth National Football Team

Style: +3

Wiki Page

Manager - Image Powell Pieran

The 49 year-old Citiz manager has ingrained himself into Astograthian history after leading the national team to their first ever World Cup Finals. Despite being the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, Olibondeka pulled off a memorable performance despite exiting in the group stage.

With high spirits, the always controversial Pieran sets about building for the next shot at the title of world champions, and like last time he will look to try out new faces in the Copa Rushmori. For this, he has replaced the World Cup squad completely except for two men: right winger Itzeder Unzueta and defensive midfielder Inguma Sapano, who will be wearing the captain's armband this tournament due to the absence of official skipper Dei Ormache. There's of all kinds: returning veterans, like Lapurdi Abaitua and Garin Alea; stars of the U21s such as Aztore Irungarai, Aintza Lekea and Eusko Kuruchet; and, of course, the four Astograthian members of FKM's Champions' Cup winning team! Egoitz Malgor's revival in particular has many people excited, as he is playing with a skill he never displayed while at Royal Rumiatzi or throughout Gartzen Treko's early call-ups.

Starting XI:
#1 - GK - Lapurdi Abaitua - Age 31 - Image FC Cape St Paul – 1 cap, 1 goal against
Having lingered in the shadow of Zernin Aira and Cheru Larretape for years on end before being dropped from the call-ups, Abaitua is back with a vengeance. He has a lot to prove, but if his performances at strong Polarian side St Paul are anything to go by he can be considered a serious contender to be in goal for Astograth at the next World Cup.

#4 - LCB – Luk Merbilha - Age 27 – Echegoyan FC – Uncapped
Practically unknown until this last season, when Echegoyan shot up the table and came perilously close to nabbing the title from Ituraitz FC, in what would have been the biggest upset in the Astograthian First Division since its creation. Merbilha played a crucial part in this, albeit not in the centre-back position Pieran intends him to play. He prefers to play as a right-back or right midfielder, and a gifted one he is, often orchestrating the attack as well as the defense. Though he has occasionally acted as a centre-back for his club in seasons past, this could be a wasted opportunity to play him elsewhere.

#2 - CB - Erramun Echebarria - Age 23 - Image Yuzhny Equinox – Uncapped
A product of the prolific Sporting Iturributa school of defenders, Echebarria isn't particularly tall or strong, but makes up for it with speed, stamina and bravery. Despite his short age he has plenty of experience, having started at Sporting for several seasons before falling out with the manager and moving to Yuzhny, where he enjoys not having to bear anyone's legacy.

#15 - RCB - Benat Uranga - Age 25 – Iturributa United - 24 caps, 1 goal
Normally a fast, technically gifted right-back whose crosses and slide tackles are accurate and deadly, Uranga is being played out of position by Pieran in what is a risky but interesting gamble. A very mobile defense partner could be a perfect match for Echebarria, but it is yet to be seen if his defensive skills are up to snuff.

#6 - DM - Inguma Sapano (C) - Age 26 - Image Vulkan – 53 caps, 3 goals
Edorta Urrustoy set a very high standard for Astograthian defensive midfielders, and Sapano has shown to be a different but no less competent player. Several seasons at relegation-threatened Šede Island Shadows made him take on a role of responsability, with decisive passes and determined demeanor. He isn't nearly as proficient at tackling and covering space as his predecessor, but at least he knows how to keep his temperament under check, which is mainly why he was chosen as captain over Unzueta.

#14 - DM - Agoztar Gorstiaga - Age 21 - Image FKM – Uncapped
Gorstiaga's performance at Di Bradini Cup 18 was so inspired that Pazhujebi giant Zhevassi signed him as soon as possible. Transferred to Kagdaz side FKM, he has continued to display his quick feet, pinpoint passing and powerful shot, which was a crucial part of the club's Champions' Cup campaign. Though defending isn't his strong suit, he doesn't think twice about recklessly throwing himself to the ground to recover the ball.

#11 - LM - Egoitz Malgor - Age 30 - Image FKM – 12 caps
A regular in Gartzen Treko's Astograth, Malgor was dropped from the squad after the World Cup 55 qualifiers and not taken into consideration again despite leading Royal Rumiatzi to silverware. Transferred to Kagdazka's FKM as part of tourism magnate Ordol Urkiza's master plan, his partnership down the wings with Itzeder Unzueta brought the team the long awaited KPFA league title before reaching the dizzying heights of Champions' Cup glory. Not a big fan of crossing, Malgor prefers to cut inside and play short passes to lead up to the goal, such as the seventy-eight minute screamer that ultimately crowned FKM as the best club in the world.

#10 - RM - Itzeder Unzueta - Age 26 - Image FKM – 58 caps, 11 goals
Unzueta's crossing has been known to be excellent for years, with keepers all across Astograth coming to dread them during his time at Athletic Rumiatzi. In recent times he has also revealed a surprising amount of skill at shooting and has scored eleven goals for the national team so far, which included an inspired hat-trick. Though his passing is also great, he tends to be selfish with the ball when around the box, and his attitude often gets him in trouble with teammates and manager alike. Champions' Cup winner at FKM, where he links up beautifully with Malgor both in the midfield and attack.

#8 - AM - Goren Barrenechea - Age 31 - Image Gimnasia – Uncapped
The grand architect of Echegoyan FC's rise to second-place in the league is no other than this man. Unpredictability is his game, always picking out the least obvious tricks and passes to leave defenders dumbfounded. On the wrong side of thirty, but who knows - he might be what Astograth needs at the next World Cup, with someone other than Bularte donning the mythical number 8 jersey.

#9 - CF – Beremando Aldoaga - Age 26 - Royal Rumiatzi – 2 caps, 1 goal
A giant of a player, Aldoaga's 1.97m make him first choice when heading of any kind needs to be done. He can tower over and power his way through any defense, though his comparative lack of pace often hinders him. Played at Blue Mountain Range before spending two relatively successful seasons at Erathore's AF Mildrid. Now at Royal Rumiatzi, where he has established a formidable strike partnership with the Kagdaz Kolya Tchailharovic that has nonetheless failed to end the club's enduring title drought.

#20 - CF – Itzaina Erreka - Age 24 - Iturributa United – 3 caps
Not very technically gifted but posseses an incredible sense of positioning, always knowing exactly where to stand in order to recieve the ball. Erreka's heading isn't anything out of this world either, but his shots are thunderous and fired without hesitation.

Substitutes:
#13 - GK - Aztore Irungarai - Age 25 - Sporting Iturributa – Uncapped
A good all-around keeper, Irungarai has fulfilled the expectations of him at club level as he stepped up to replace the prestigious Zernin Aira. After a brief Di Bradini Cup performance some years ago, he has cemented himself as reliable and commanding, if slightly burdened by the reputation of his predecessor and Sporting's fine defensive tradition.

#23 - GK – Urgutz Martinena - Age 23 - Image Juvillian Martinax – Uncapped
A Di Bradini Cup participant, Martinena was starting keeper for Royal Arexa during their battles for promotion and relegation, with such great talent as to be snapped up by Erathi giants Juvillian Martinax. Though one of the highest-rated keepers in the Seria-A, his chances of playing at this Copa Rushmori are very low.

#5 - LCB - Eusko Kuruchet - Age 22 - Image Al Haxire – Uncapped
From the distant Taeshani league comes the hardworking Kuruchet, veteran of two Di Bradini Cups. Bred in the youth ranks of Royal Association, he left for Al Haxire at a young age on the back of his terrific positioning. His marking is a bit off, though, which can place the team under unnecessary pressure.

#16 - CB - Anton Axpuru - Age 20 - Image FKM – Uncapped
A versatile defender who can play all across the back and even as a holding midfielder, a useful player for Sacha Chrétien at FKM. Has some international experience at youth level, but this Copa Rushmori is his chance to be blooded on a more demanding stage.

#3 - RCB - Ixona Ertze - Age 28 - Sporting Iturributa – Uncapped
Played sufficiently well at South Factory for long enough that the notoriously defensive Sporting took an interest in him. Rather technically limited, however, and he definitely doesn't do fancy stuff like play short passes. It's always long balls and blood & guts defending with him.

#22 - DM – Garin Alea - Age 31 - Sporting Iturributa – 46 caps, 2 goals
Alea, dropped from the squad after the qualifiers for World Cup 56, makes a return after an great season with Urbizania Wanderers, which earned him both a call-up and a transfer to Sporting Iturributa. Having spent a good many years in the Erathi Seria-A, Alea isn't one for the future, but could still be called upon to act as muscle in the middle of the pitch for the next World Cup.

#19 - DM – Diegoche Lizaran - Age 28 – Image FC Torshavn – Uncapped
Mostly a ball-stealer, Lizaran has never stood out amidst all the other Astograthian midfielders until he committed his heart and soul into qualifying Urbizania Wanderers to the Globe Cup, which earned him a transfer to Polarian outfit FC Torshavn. Though a hard worker, he doesn't have much chance of dethroning Sapano or Legeren, nevermind the up-and-coming Gorstiaga.

#17 - LM – Kauldi Ayatsbehers - Age 23 - Royal Rumiatzi – Uncapped
Ayatsbehers is on of the finest products of the Royal Rumiatzi youth ranks in recent years. A very aggressive player, he has been a constant in Rumiatzi's recent seasons. Prefers to cut inside and either shoot or play a short pass backwards instead of going wide and crossing.

#12 - RM - Iban Bachiondo - Age 20 - Echegoyan FC – Uncapped
Started out his career at Echegoyan before spending two coming-of-age seasons at Mytannion's Olympic Thessia. Now back at his hometown club following their surprise second-place finish, Bachiondo is very pacy and an excellent dribbler, but an utter lack of height and strength limit his potential. That said, his crosses are incredibly accurate regardless of where they're kicked from; his long passes up and across the pitch are similarly deadly on the counter-attack.

#7 - AM – Aintza Lekea - Age 20 – Image Juvillian Martinax – Uncapped
Signed at a remarkably young age by the renowned FC Mildrid of Erathore and then transferred to the equally massive Juvillian Martinax. Selfish with the ball and a bit of a diver, but his tricks and free kicks are brilliant. Suits Pieran just fine. A strong candidate for someday taking up the mantle of national team playmaker, though his attitude is strongly rejected by the Astograthian fans.

#18 - CF - Urtatz Soreasu - Age 30 - Image FC Cape St Paul – Uncapped
A competent, reliable forward who for a long time served as Blue Mountain Range's lone gunman before being sold to one of the most consistent teams in the Polarian Divisjon One. Doesn't dazzle or boast great skill in any single area, simply hangs around near the goalie and keeps a cool head to fire it into the net.

#21 - CF - Iker Malik - Age 19 - Sporting Iturributa - Uncapped
Born to an Erathi father and an Astograthian mother, Malik was brought through the youth ranks of AF Mildrid until bursting onto the scene at the tender age of 18 as a prolific goalscorer, banging in 29 in his last season in the Seria-A and earning numerous accolades. Now he has returned to his mother's country to play for Sporting Iturributa and laid claim to his Astograthian nationality, which prompted a lightning-fast telephone conference between Pieran and Erathi footballing authorities before he was finally called up to the Copa Rushmori squad, to which the lad agreed to immediately. Quick and elusive, he shakes off markers with ease before slotting the ball home from within the box.

Don't kill them, dont remove limbs.
Cuz if they don't have hands, then how will we win?
If out they should be for 2 days or more,
tg me first to avoid a war.
Godmodding is fine, but beware
ill do it to, and i can be a scare.
So, all in all, do whatever seems cool
but please, I implore you, remember the golden rule
cuz if ya do it to me, ill do it to you,
and of the same rp there would be two
and we dont want that, so be kind,
and follow these rules. Just see what you'll find!
That you can rp, and i can too!
and this will bring happieness to me and to you

Maybe time passes more slowly in 'The Hidden Paw' than it does in some other nations, but anyway they're sending exactly the same team that they sent to the previous Cup (and to the one before that, and for that matter both of the two before that as well, too...) but nobody in it looks any older now than they did then...

Nation: The Hidden Paw
Team nickname: 'The Great Hunt'

Manager: Harrubearr DeWhite (male Ursine, very light-brown fur, elderly, eloquent)

Team Doctor: Berrins ThunderBear (male Ursine, youngish adult, dark brown fur, wears heavy glasses and often wears a white 'lab' coat over his ordinary clothes, doesn't talk much)

Kits: 'Home' = all white (except Goalkeeper's, which is dark gray)
'Away' = all black (except Goalkeeper's, which is light gray)

Style modifier: balanced, essentially ±0 (although if the host is willing then this goes to +1 against any team whose style is -2.5 or lower / -1 against any team whose style is +2.5 or higher...)

Normal formation: 3-4-3

RP permissions: Anything that's reasonable or funny, but don't get too many of them red-carded at a time; however their doctor can "magically" fix most injuries almost immediately, and most other injuries before their next game... and two of the players, namely 'Sable' & 'Scarrlett', are basically indestructible to any hazards to which they're at all likely to be exposed in these circumstances anyway.

Yes, they're all Ursines, although unlike the teams from Bears Armed they're males rather than females. They're generally closer to the 'human' end of the anthropomorphism scale than most of BA's people, less massive but more agile than those, and --- except in any specific cases where I indicate otherwise -- have eyesight within the normal human range.
Also unlike the teams from BA, these players are quite likely to cheat if they think that there's something worthwhile to be gained by doing so and that they have a reasonable chance of getting away with it. To use an analogy based on the Harry Potter' books, if BA is 'Hufflepuffs' -- which I think would be a fairly common view abroad -- or even (at least by their own estimation) 'Gryffindors' then THP tends to be more... well... 'Slytherins'...
(Why a 'Harry Potter' analogy, you ask? Well, remember, this is one of the nations that managed to field a team for NS's first 'Quidditch World Cup': Don't worry, though, they have a strict "No wands inside sporting venues" rule for everybody except sports associations' officials and -- when playing -- Quidditch teams...)
(Of course, 'Slytherins' and their typical attitude to rules...)

Roster

Goalkeeper: #01 _ Pait'hurr Storm _ plays for 'SouthGate Stormcubs' _ dark brown fur, ambidextrous, big but fast on his feet too, can exhale strongly enough to blow the ball around and maybe even to blow opposing players off of their feet.

Defenders: #02 _ Berrjhill ThunderBear _ plays for 'Island Rangers', usual position = Left Back _ greyish-brown fur, left-pawed, twin brother of #04. (These twins have a strong rapport that helps them to work very well together).
#03 _ Darron Barkh _ plays for 'Imagerrie Ikons', usual position = Centre Back _ dark brown fur, left-pawed, big and strong but deceptively nimble too, the team's youngest player.
#04 _ Skorth ThunderBear _ plays for 'Island Rangers', usual position = Right Back _ greyish-brown fur, right-pawed, twin brother of #02. (These twins have a strong rapport that helps them to work very well together).

Midfielders:

#05 _ Anddurr Sable _ plays for 'Midsomer Mysteries', usual position = Defensive Left Midfielder, Team Captain _ ambidextrous, black fur, expressionless eyes, "indestructable", can not only project his voice right across the field but do so in such a way that only his intended target[s] here him, a very good player and a verrry good tactician.
#06 _ Derrak o FarWoods _ plays for 'FarWoods Rangers', usual position = Defensive Right Midfielder _ grayish-brown fur, right-pawed, in awe of (but dislikes) Andderr Sable.
#007 _ Jamz Bland _ plays for 'Multiversal Importers', usual position = Offensive Right Midfielder _ fur = light brown, right-pawed, good at getting to where his team's opponents don't want him to be, a playmaker and sometimes (usually when the opposition don't expect it) goal scorer, almost as good as he thinks he is _ off the pitch he dresses stylishly & expensively (just avoiding "flashily" too), enjoys good living and fast cars, and chases attractive females (Human as well as Ursine) who do tend to fall for him...
#404 _ Ethbahr Nevermore _ plays for 'Midsomer Mysteries', usually as Offensive Left Winger _ black fur, smaller than 'Sable' and a bit further from human than him as well, ambidextrous, he specialises in getting around the pitch without being noticed by the opposition (for example, to ensure that one of his colleagues isn't "offside" after all) and doesn't talk much.

Strikers:

#11 _ Bruettus Woaden _ plays for 'ChromaCity Champions', usual position = Left Forward _ dark brown fur with a "blue" tinge, right-pawed, big & strong, fairly fast but not quite as manoeuvrable (or as intelligent?) as some of his colleagues; [non-identical] twin of #12.
#12 _ Bruenno Woaden _ plays for 'ChromaCity Champions', usual position = Right Forward _ dark brown fur with a "blue" tinge, left-pawed, tbig & strong, fairly fast but not quite as manoeuvrable (or as intelligent?) as some of his colleagues; [non-identical] twin of #11.
#13 _ Gerray Scarrlett _ 'ChromaCity Champions', usual position = Centre Forward _ medium-brown fur with a reddish tinge, ambidextrous, a bit smaller than the twins but still quite large by human standards and surprisingly strong, fast and manoeuvrable and bright, "indestructible", good at inspiring the team (of which he is Deputy Captain...).
(A fairly common tactic, when Gerray kicks off, will be for him to take the ball down-field while the Woaden twins back him up -- in a sort-of 'wedge' formation -- to discourage any attempts at tackling him & to help recover the ball if he does lose it...)

(Substitutes possibly to be added later...)

Coach

Jésus Vazquez
Former midfield maestro who cut his coaching teeth in Cafundéu. Promoted to the big chair after serving as assistant to Francisco Martinez.

Talent

GK: 1. Fernando Surza (24) - Jaguarés
Rock solid keeper hot off the back of an excellent domestic campaign in which he was an intergral part of his side's top flight survial.

DR: 2. Toni Siqueira (23) - Ciudad Soluca
Gallivanting right sided fallback with pace to burn and technique that comes from being half Cafundelense.
DRC: 5. Raúl Salas (29) - Dínamo Maturín
Big bruiser at the back who helped turn Dínamo into the SuperLiga's meanest defence. Not a chap whose pint you should spill.
DLC: 6. Javi Aguilar (30) - Royal Vosaroni Antenelli (Erathore)
Centreback with the silky ball skills of a Pocoan masseuse. Has florushed since moving to Erathore. Captains the side following Monzón's retirement.
DL: 3. Rubén Rochina (23) - El Nacional
Offers a lovely delivery from the left flank although still pines for life as a midfielder, hence not great defensively.

MRC: 7. Matías Montiel (22) - Ciudad Soluca
A talented fella with a real eye for goal although whether that will show in his new deeper role remains to be seen.
MC: 4. Luís Ángel Landín (28) - Alianza Jucaro
Consistently one of the SuperLiga's most, well, consistent performers. Offers a neat and tidy range of passing and the ability to dictate the Corsairs' tempo.
MLC: 8. Marcelo Alonso (24) - Deportivo Soluca
Enjoys a free role with his club side but will have to show a tad more discipline in Vazquez's new attack minded formation.

FRC: 10. Lucas Andrada (20) - Dunas Del Sol
Scored six goals as the Under-20 finished in third place at the recent championships in Astograth. Rewarded with an immediate promotion to the senior side and the attentions of numerous scouts.
FC: 9. Celso Esquivel (26) - Royal Vosaroni Antenelli (Erathore)
A penalty area predator who led the goalscoring charts last year despite turning out for the modest Marinos. Recently left the Estadio Bolero to try his feet in Erathore.
FLC: 11. Alejandro Echeverría (23) - Ciudad Soluca
This boy's a bit special and we're not talking in the crash helmet and crayons sense. Stick him anywhere in the attacking third and he can make something happen. Ciudad reportedly spent silly money to bring him in from Daroca Marinos.

GK: 13. José Antonio Leiva (28) - Alianza Jucaro
DRC: 12. Leandro Gonzàlez (19) - El Nacional
DC: 22. Bruno Trejo (23) - Deportivo Cordova
DLC: 17. Diego Favre (25) - Ciudad Soluca
DL: 19. Mariano Mansilla (27) - Pythons (Queer Poco el Mono Ara)
MC: 15. Lucas Càceres (29) - El Nacional
MRC: 16. Hugo Messina (27) - Alianza Jucaro
AMR: 20. Andrés Guerrón (25) - Chastings Heights (Civil Citizenry)
AMLC: 14. Sebastian Leto (24) - Sporting San Marquez
FC: 18. Héctor Riera (30) - Ciudad Soluca
FRLC: 21. Alejandro Martinuccio (21) - Porto Alegro Azul

After several years on the coaching staff new boss Vazquez has twigged that his charges aren't all that hot in defence. Hence he's focusing on a quick passing dynamic style that will see the side defend with a high line, mark aggressively, seek to keep the opposition under constant mental and physical pressure before winning possession in the opponents half before scything through to score a truck load. In theory.

Inter-state rivalry and different cultures still present a difficult political matter in all realms of life in Nieuwe Sleeswijk.

Copa Rushmori Soon To Get Underway; La Furia Azule Placed In Tough Group

In a group boasting names such as Swartaz, Whirl Islands, and Nethertopia, La Furia Azule will have their work cut out for them. It will be interesting to see how this squad will preform considering there are seven new faces on the team, including one new starter and one substitute promoted to starter. The purpose of this article is not to dissect the opponents and talk about how la furia azule should systematically beat all of them by incredible amounts. The purpose of this article is to talk about this passa e posse playing style that is unique to Erathore.

Erathore has almost always lined up in with a 3-4-3 Formation throughout their history. This formation provides a good defense, with 3 defenders and a defensive midfielder to act as a fourth defensive player. This defensive midfielder is often used to turn defense into attack and to act as a deep lying playmaker. The four midfielders serve to control possession and pass the ball around in the passa e posse style that the team uses to deadly effect. The attacking midfielder has been converted into more of a trequartista in the past few years. The three forwards are given the ability to switch positions amongst themselves as they please. The same is true with the midfielders and defenders.

When watching the National Team play, one will immediately notice three things.

The reason behind all this is Erathi players generally aren't physical and tough enough to outmuscle opponents, so instead they want to concentrate on monopolizing the ball. Copious amounts of short passing, possession, and patience make the system work. It is very popular system with Erathi clubs and in international clubs where Erathi players are.

Happy to allow their opponents 60% possession or even more as a normality, Bleak Rock will be playing counter-attacking football this tournament. Looking to draw the attackers from the other team into a frustrating war of attrition in the defence, then lauching swift and devastating counterattacks that strike hard and fast at the opposition goal. This is guerilla football.

The Protectorate of Bleak Rock is delighted to be able to submit their international team for entry into the Copa Rushmori once again. After an uninspiring debut on the international football scene, including an 8-0 humiliation at the hands of Polar Islandstates, the Dukes picked themselves up and went on to storm to the runners-up spot in their Baptism of Fire. The confidence brought by this soon disappated however, after the Dukes took over half the following qualification campaign to score any goals. Things picked up, but fans felt disappointed by what could have been.

Ljótur Friðfinnursson was tempted away by the bright lights of the assistant post at Swartaz, and so the BRFA was left trying to find a boss to take the Dukes forwards. With no applicants for the job from within Rushmore, the net was cast wider. Still, no applicants. Running out of options, the BRFA finally started sending letters of job offers to manager who had been out of the game for a while, and then finally, in inward looking Yafor 2, they got a response.

Shaan Magerin, the legendary Yaforite manager, will continue at the reigns for this cycle after impressing as he took the Dukes to the Copa Rushmori quarter finals last time around, only conceding a single goal in the process. Known for his unusual formations and his uncompromising attitude towards players who aren't performing as they should, Magerin will subsitute a badly performing star player within twenty minutes if the system doesn't fit the way he wants to unlock the opposing team. Controversially appointed the former-Astograthi-international Edorta Urrustoy as his assistant two games into the last Copa, the two seem to gel very well, and will be looking to take their brand of football to a more global scale this competition.

FULL ROSTER:
GOALKEEPERS
#1 - GK - Hallvarður Kielberg - Age 32 - Dominion (Cotdelapoms) - Hús Hreindýr
#12 - GK - Petter Sivertsson - Age 26 - Cap Nordique (Cotdelapoms) - Hvítabjörninn Hús
#13 - GK - Jónas Magnússson - Age 31 - Glidi Hreindýrsal - Hús Hreindýr
Kielberg is the starter in what is a strong goalkeeping contingent in the squad, perhaps the best represented position of them all in fact. Sivertsson is one of a handful of representatives from the Blockhead-controlled Cotdelapomais club, Cap Nordique.

BACKLINE
#3 - DC - Hafliði Broberg - Age 33 - Náhvarðvíkur Bæ IF - Hús Náhvalur
#4 - DC - Gull Tommisen - Age 33 - FK Grise Fiord (Polar Islandstates) - Hús Hrafninn - VICE-CAPTAIN
#22 - DC - Hallvarð Friðfinnursson - Age 29 - Port Milne (Southern Cynocephali) - Hús Náhvalur

#20 - DC - Benedikt Aagard - Age 32 - FK Hámarvik - Hvítabjörninn Hús
#23 - DC - Óskar Jóhannsson - Age 34 - K85 Járn Virkaroy - Hús Hreindýr
In a defence that will be keen on avoiding another humiliation like they received against Polar Islandstates, vice-captain Tommisen will look to lead the line and hold steady in the face of attacking waves. Aggressive and not ashamed of getting stuck in, even with each other, this speedy defence will look to irritate, frustrate, and close down quickly, and their tall imposing frames with an average height of 5'11" will not make it easy for any attackers.

MIDDLE LINE
#2 - DR - Guðjón Ragnarsson - Age 30 - High Groth Athletic (Civil Citizenry) - Hvítabjörninn Hús
#5 - DL - Jens Ljótursson - Age 32 - Norðurmýrar 87 - Hús Hrafninn
#8 - DMC - Dietar Eygenroy - Age 29 - Jan Mayen Islanders (Polar Islandstates) - Hvítabjörninn Hús - CAPTAIN

#17 - DR - Steingrímur Aagard - Age 32 - Glidi Hreindýrsal - Hús Hreindýr
#18 - DL - Eyvindur Náhvalursson - Age 30 - Náhvarðvíkur Bæ IF - Hús Náhvalur
The key figure of Dietar Eygenroy will lead the way from the centre of the park for the Dukes, having both top flight Polarian football experience, as well as experience playing in the TQCC for Jan Mayen Islanders, and will surely be instrumental in any victories the Dukes manage to get under their belt. This central line of 'the back nine' will serve as a way of mopping up any attackers attempting to find space between the midfield and defence.

WINGERS
#7 - MR - Karl Justinussen - Age 32 - Leiknir Reykjanesur - Hvítabjörninn Hús
#16 - ML - Ragnar Guðmundursson - Age 29 - Hrafninn Knattspyrnufélag - Hús Hrafninn
Here for the option of having wide midfielders rather than making the first team, Justinussen and Guðmundursson are not the fastest winger in the world, but still have a good cross and are tough to get past on the wing provided they're not pushed too far forwards. Which, knowing Magerin, I can't see happening all too often unless a counter-attack is in full swing.

FRONT LINE
#6 - MC - Jón Ragnarsson - Age 31 - Juvapanam (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu) - Hús Hrafninn
#11 - AMC - Ingvar Sigurhelgason - Age 21 - FC Cape St Paul (Polar Islandstates) - Hús Náhvalur
#21 - MC - Skarphéðinn Jóhannsson - Age 33 - RKA Hvalabátum - Hús Náhvalur

#14 - AMC - Oddi Jónatan - Age 29 - Leiknir Reykjanesur - Hvítabjörninn Hús
#15 - MC - Arnljótur Rosenmeyersson - Age 27 - Hreindýrsal Stríðsmaður - Hús Hreindýr
With no wide attackers in the starting lineup, Magerin has opted to play the quick and full of tricks Siguerhelgason through the middle, well away from his favoured left wing. The ever dependable Ragnarsson will harry and dictate pace in the centre of the park, showing the kind of form that caused Juvapanam to sign him up at the start of the other season. Jóhannsson is promoted to the starting lineup as a quirk of formation, whilst Rosenmeyersson is another winger adopted to the centre of the park for the prurpose of counter attack.

STRIKERS
#9 - ST - Vagn Rosenmeyer - Age 25 - Cap Nordique (Cotdelapoms) - Hús Hreindýr
#10 - ST - Gunnar Mackenzie - Age 25 - FC Cape St Paul (Polar Islandstates) - Hús Hrafninn
#19 - ST - Jon Dahl Pettersen - Age 30 - FC Fetlar (Polar Islandstates) - Hús Náhvalur
The attack for Bleak Rock is a strong and young one, with new Cap Nordique signing Rosenmeyer the key outlet for attacks and the frequent hero of the side, and young starlet Gunnar Mackenzie - having chosen his Blockhead nationality over his Polarian one after independence was granted - will be looking to show the Terns exactly what they're missing should he have the chance to come on to either partner Rosenmeyer or replace him to us his slightly superior pace to fit into Magerin's masterplan.

Spotlight On… The CNCR And so it came to pass that, in the early winter of 2011, a squad of men and women did assemble in Saugeais to take on the Kytler Peninsulae in that most ancient sport of association football. So many of our readers still can’t quite bring themselves to accept that it will even happen, even now. It still feels unreal.

Hanging suspended in the air like Macbeth’s dagger, enticing, intangible, elusive; the prospect of a ‘national’ team being gathered from the across the four corners of the Confederated Nations of Continental Rushmore was our Higgs Boson. Searched for, hoped for, for decades. And while they’ve never played together, don’t even have a nickname yet, and will almost certainly be absolutely slaughtered in each of their five matches, none of that will matter to the team’s small band of dedicated followers.

The chosen squad is, of course, an absolute mess. A twenty-three chosen on the basis of ability and attainment alone would have been utterly dominated by Candelariasian-influenced Ransome-Bkyki Island, with a few Chesapeakines rounding things off and most other member nations unrepresented. And that simply wasn’t on, was it? There would have been questions in the House. In a lot of Houses. So instead all twelve countries have at least one player on the squad, hopelessly outclassed even by their shiny new team-mates. What is more, the deal to agree the creation of this outfit has seen all twenty-three selected from their own domestic leagues. That means no players playing abroad, no handy Mytanar or Nethertopian or whatnot with a nanna from Tellussodissano, and not even anyone playing in another of the CNCR’s twelve domestic divisions.

Honest to God, hell in a handcart.

But who really cares, at the end of the day? No-one actually expects the region’s twelve least sports oriented nations to actually win a game, even combining their talents. The point is, after years of arguments they’re finally here.

Yay, I suppose.

Scouting Report… As international debutants, guessing the CNCR’s initial set-up will prove problematic for pundits and the opposition alike, but the squad numbers handed out last week and the reputations preceding certain key squad members (not to mention the mana… sorry, head coach) point to a rather grim 4-3-3, with the midfield bypassed where possible and goalscoring hopes pinned solely upon the pace, occasional moments of trickery and, most importantly, youthful naivety of the trio up front.

Himmelmann looks the most physical of the three and will likely plough the central furrow, pouncing on loose balls (she’s only a young lass, she’ll settle down eventually, we’re sure) and hopefully providing flick-ons for pallid, speedy Kipling – whose five goals in five games at the recent Campeonato Rushmori Juvenil Sub-17 (catchy, we like it) suggested that his record of thirty-seven in twenty-one Lussolavizzovian league starts might not quite be as silly as we’d first thought – and diving champion t’Butler, whose no less impressive record in the rather stronger Bkyka league shouldn’t be masked by the fact that he’s been playing for the club that’s won the title thirteen years out of the past fifteen.

The hope, essentially, is that none of that lot have realised that, in the greater scheme of things, they’re basically shite yet.

With a bit of luck, the all-Chesapeakine central defensive partnership (including Shelford’s club protégé Kitts at the CBSL’s surprise champions and Seunem international Austin Vane and Woodknock’s partner in the capital) will receive much-needed protection from squad captain t’son o’Henry, the only member of the playing staff to have had experience overseas; the graceful Allemali-born midfielder having spent many a year warming the bench at CMSC1 sides (and even winning a title with Green Island) before answering the call from his parents’ native Ssotapel in the aftermath of Candelariasian football’s disintegration. His likely fellows North and Matthews meanwhile are relatively confident on the ball, by all accounts, and can spot a pass – but given the standard of opposition they face week-in, week-out domestically the Copa will surely represent a step up too far.

In Richellet, the CNCR at least have an experienced, reliable shot-stopper who, one hopes, will also be boosted by the support from the sidelines of another ex-CMSC star, the Nanticoke-born one-time C&M Under-21 goalie Cressey.

Scouting Report… The travelling (sorry, sorry, traveling) support from a disparate fanbase who have waited eons for this will help them (probably), and they may yet catch one or two Group C opponents on the hop if they end up being treated as the whipping boys and girls worthy only of facing the reserves put out by some of Rushmore’s most experienced footballing powers… But they won’t. A couple of goals and maybe a clean sheet themselves would be worthy reward for their efforts.

Kits… We haven’t actually been given a picture yet so we’ve had to guess somewhat, courtesy of our work experience boy Eric. He’s very nice, is Eric, and his mother says there’s every chance he’ll get better in a year or two.

Coming off a top 8 finish in the World Cup, Cotdelapoms will come into the Copa Rushmori carrying a squad of almost entirely uncapped players, not unlike many other nations entering the tournament.

Goalkeepers
René Wright-Efans (FKM, K&P)
Timothée Riopel (SK Franz Josef City, PIS)
Romain Frederiksson (Worcester Hearts)

Cotdelapomais football has an abundance of strong goalkeepers, and it's indicative in the slugfest for regular playing time now that Yannick Latendresse has retired- especially considering that it'd be hard to suggest Latendresse held the position as much on merit as on history and experience. Wright-Efans is uncapped somehow, yet was just the starting keeper on the best club team in the world, and had a damn good season to boot. Riopel was strong in the Polarian league, and Romain Frederiksson won a title in Série A. Poor Nicolas Painchaud can't even get into the discussion, despite being a strong choice as well- perhaps first choice in most other national teams, but these three all won titles in their respective leagues and are solid solid choices. Expect to see Michel Carbonnier rotate between them.

Defenders
Loïk Mailhot (Atlético Jutense, Caf)
Guillaume Leblanc (Atlético Jutense, Caf)
Patrice Proulx (Zhevassi, K&P)
Geoff Carpentier (Dominion)
Noë Renault (Worcester Hearts)
Joakim Hansson (Cap Nordique)
Dermot O'Brien (Montréal)
Hákon Dumont (Stephen of August, Nova Cambria)

Three (relatively) new faces in this group, and indeed only Mailhot (arguably Cotdelapoms' best player) has extensive experience. Proulx has impressed overseas, and Leblanc is highly regarded. Joakim Hansson's time has come arguably too late, as he likely won't be able to help out past the next World Cup cycle anyway. Hákon Dumont is the wildcard- unfamiliar to most Cotdelapomais as he plays for Stephen of August, but the last player the Apples brought from Nova Cambria was Frédéric Bilodeau and he has generally been a success.

Midfielders
Ismaël Yarrez (Sparta)
Eualdo Nkong (FKM, K&P)
Jean-François Lapierre (Étoile Rouge)
Jean Bédard (Montréal)
Felicio Proença (Sparta)
Joë Parenteau (Sparta)
Alexandre Parent (Worcester Hearts)
Zeruko Zarranz (Sparta)

Manager Michel Carbonnier patrolled the midfield for Sparta for 15 seasons. Is it safe to say the Copa Rushmori squad is paying them back for all their years of support? Yarrez is probably the other person in the argument with Mailhot for best player in the Apple team, so his inclusion is not shady, and you can come up with reasonable arguments for all three of Proença, Parenteau and Zarranz, but it's certainly interesting to see FOUR Reds midfielders named to the team. Zarranz is the most interesting situation- Sorthern by birth, but never capped and naturalised quickly after the incidents in that nation. J-F Lapierre scored a goal in the World Cup final, and whilst he's getting up there in years he's quietly become a solid bench contributor for the Apples. It's an odd role- he often comes on over "better" players. Bédard is the youngest player on the team and will be given a chance despite not getting regular playing time at Montréal because he is highly regarded.

Forwards
Erubiel Navarro (Tout-Puissant Outremont)
Christophe Charlebois (Baltimore)
João Desjardins (Saint-Urbain)
Frédéric Bilodeau (Athens Town, Civil Citizenry)

A remarkably young group- only Charlebois is over 25, and he's got exactly 1 cap to his name. Navarro played in the World Cup final, so he's in, although he hasn't done a whole lot. João Desjardins is a total wildcard, a hot prospect who is probably the only player on the team unlikely to actually get minutes, but it's clear Michel Carbonnier wants to get some time to train with him to see if he has a future. Striking is a weak field for Cotdelapoms- Jackson Diawara and James Hunt are a strong 1-2, but there's a big dropoff after those two. Navarro and Bilodeau are capable, but perhaps not the type of players that should be playing in the last eight of the World Cup.

The Island Chronicle

Jésus Is Coming

The decision was made behind closed doors a while ago but finally the Football Federation of Sargossa has officially named Jésus Vazquez as the new head coach of the Corsairs. In truth the succession was decided years ago when Vazquez was named as assistant coach to veteran Francisco Martinez with an eye to take over from the Starblaydi when he stepped down. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. And hopes are high for that man, who is regarded as something of a coaching talent. In his playing days as a silky skilled midfield strategist he worked under Gabriel Vizcarra, still regarded as the finest of Sargossan coaches, and was part of his Deportivo Soluca side that won a shock SuperLiga title and then played an integral role in the Vizcarra coached national team that reached successive world cup finals. Playing his club football in Cafundéu, a breeding ground for international managers, didn't hurt either and after his retirement from the playing side he was immediately snapped up by new Clube Comercial boss Eddie Barnes to join his staff at the Olímpico Imperial.

Fortunately those high hopes will be tasted in a tournament that no one really cares about. Which is just as well as the new coach looks to shape an attacking philosophy onto a side used to his predecessor's more cautious approach. Sweeping changes haven't materialised but highly paid thug Raúl Salas is the likely replacement for the retired Víctor Monzón at the back while Marcelo Alonso is an interesting addition to the midfield. A successful Under-20 Campeonato Rushmori Juvenil has hinted at a bright future and the hugely talented Lucas Andrada, Sargossa's top scorer at that tournament, is expected to get a starting berth while the Under-20 captain Leandro Gonzàlez adds options in defence.

The Corsairs may be sporting some new faces, but novelty hasn't extended to the rest of Group C. This tournament normally guarantees a fixture or two against some of the region's more unknown and useless nations (see Group E) but this time the opposition looks painfully familiar. Pasarga and West Zirconia are rivals of old while Sargossa had enjoyed recent international success against Mangolana. Then there's the Kytlerians. Why did it have to be the Kytlerians? Three times in their brief history the Peninsulae's finest have clashed with our Corsairs and three times the result was unpleasant.

Completing this sinister six are the men and wimmin' of Continental Rushmore. Now it would be easy to label this rugged bunch as the group's whipping boys (and gals). But that's what they want you the think. Don't let their funny accents, homespun ways and turnip fixation fool you, they're a shifty bunch over in the CNCR. One second you're buying batteries in a West Kovanel electronics boutique the next you're walking out with three digital cameras, two colour printers, a washer dryer and a lifetime digital subscription to the Lussolavizzovian soap opera network. Don't be buying the disunity argument either. Sure their squad comes from far and wide but as bloc voting at A Song For Rushmore has shown again and again the Continentals can band together when they feel like it, particularly when they can give a collective screw you to the wider region.
