"It's nice to go into a huge game knowing it's not actually a huge game."

A cryptic remark from head coach Sid Nairn-Coles. What explains it? Very simple; it's knowing that there's no pressure on the Guardians' place in the playoffs of World Bowl 16, only whether or not they will get the first-round bye that comes with winning their group. Victory over Carasatoga at Zube National Stadium is a necessary part of doing that, but even a defeat won't cost them - even second place looks all but secured after the vertically-challenged side of Andossa Se Mitrin Vega were humbled by the capitalisation-challenged Homelands our.

"We've played our toughest games other than this one - we know exactly how to beat ASMV, they're now going to be terrified of us, and we've also beaten Space in zero gravity, although that was a heck of a tough game," Nairn-Coles noted. "I don't see us not going 5-0 after this game. It's just this game that's the problem. And Margaret. Always a problem with Margaret."

The bye week came at an ideal time, after a disappointing 26-20 win over Krumbia on home soil, although the game was not as close as that made out as the Guardians led by 13-0 after the first quarter, and remained 13 points clear at the two-minute warning - Krumbia scored a touchdown with the next play, but failed to recover the inevitable onside kick, and the Guardians secured two more first downs to seal the game.

This also came with a heavily changed team after the first quarter - including bringing second-string quarterback Stephen Carringdon onto the field. Carringdon was 15/26 for 205 yards with two TDs and an INT, good for a 92.6 passer rating; Carringdon, who is far bigger than starting QB Matthew Bellingham, took a lot of risks, with varying results. Both the touchdowns and the interception - which was taken back for a pick-six - stemmed from deep passes down the field which Bellingham wouldn't even consider. The intention of using him in this situation appeared to be to disrupt Carasatoga's expectations of the Guardians' offensive playcalling - or at least to cause them to prepare for something different to the West Coast offense that fits Bellingham so well.

Carasatoga played Krumbia while the Guardians had a week off, and looked offensively strong but defensively suspect in winning a 37-26 shootout. On this evidence, there will be excitement ahead at ZNS tonight, and the first quarter might be the time for offense - it's set to be the coldest night of the year so far in Zube.

Weather forecast for game time at Zube National Stadium (6:30pm local time kickoff): 49F, clear, light easterly winds. Temperatures predicted to fall to 38F by 9pm.

Knights of Talroth'a ranked 10th!?
by Beaslix Hoppings your fast reporting blazing bunny

The Monks of Korxalius Mountain..."Yes, Monks!" Or rather the most religious football fans that practically believe the sport is a way of life to be religiously bound to, have published their ranking poll of the current World Bowl. It has a rather usual tone for the first three teams in its poll but after that it gets a wee bit more surprising to find commonly top of the creme de la creme teams such as Bluth Corporation and Delaclava in 6th and 7th place. You find some breakout star teams or Cinderella stories starting with undefeated Carasatoga in 4th, The Kytler Peninsulae in 8th, Torisakia in 14th, and Miley World in 19th. Carasatoga has been slowly making its way up in the world of WB and has been making quite the showing for itself this year. The Kytler Peninsulae along with Carasatoga in the same group have ended up in their respective places because they have literally been shutting down ASMV...another oddity this season. Torisakia has jumped to a new found glory with the aggressive 4-4-3 play-style under James Mercado this season. Miley World known for its rhythmic nature has found itself finding great melody. Truly, a team to watch over the next few seasons if this one doesn't quite turn out to deliver.

But, of course with all this talk about other teams across the football universe you really just want to hear more about those Knights of yours from Talroth'a. Don't you? Well it seems at this point they have held onto normalcy by staying around the number 10 spot for most of the season. Its quite odd if you ask me to say, "Weyr Sular is a reliable 10th place team." But, if you ask any true Sularean fan they will tell you the same.
If this signature was a female would it be a cigarette?
I find playing the devil's advocate of the devil's advocate natural.

World Bowl XVI
The Road To Cassadaigua

Game 7: v. Arroza

The offensive stuggles at home continued, but the Sharks are still unbeaten through 7 games after a 19-13 win. No turnovers were to be seen ont eh day, but the Arrozian defense did hold Qazox to 2 FG and 2 TD on 5 redzone attempts. The other attempt was a 4th and goal from the 1, which saw Brian Kelly get stuffed by Anthony Newmarket as time expired in the first half. But Qazox' defense was just as good, holding Arroza to just 4 for 13 on 3rd downs and 0 for 2 on 4th downs. Qazox now travels to Thrilledge, who upset Osarius yesterday 29-27; giving Qazox a 2 game lead in the group.

3 big plays of the day:

#3- Newmarket's stopping of Brian Kelly on 4th and 1 at the end of the 1st half. The stop kept the score at 7-6 Arroza and kept the chances of an Admirals' upset.

#2- Paul Willingham's recovery of a Jake Levy fumble that kept Qazox' go-ahead drive in the 3rd quarter alive. Willingham was directly responsible for the fumble on a botches snap, but managed to fall on the ball just after it squirted free from Levy's grasp.

#1- Hal Landry's diving tackle on Daniel Bradley that prevented an Arroza TD in the final minute on 4th and 2 from the Qazox 9. With Arroza not having any timeouts, a quick direct snap to Bradley on the play saw Bradley sweep right and Landry's dive tripped him just short of the 1st down line, giving the ball back to the Sharks with 11 seconds left and a 19-13 lead.

(Exert from Rose Paton's recent Sports Herald article "Why we need Chad and JR")

So it comes to this point where one gets past their recent mishaps with the Rams, and find themselves at the central question involving these two. That is "Why do we have these guys on anyways?" Why do we continue to let these two go on and make fools of themselves, half the time not even talking about football. And to these questions I have one answer.

Because they are funny.

In these times where all that anyone wants to feed you is doom and gloom, and all that everyone wants to talk about is how in the world are the Rams going to mess up their season this time. Chad and JR reminds you of the importance of comedy. That sometimes, all you need is a good laugh, and that in the end, no matter how much more detailed those game reports may be, or how engaging reading that bio about a coach from that one season, the jokers of the world are important too.

And that's why we need Chad and JR

Missing the deadline: Sadder than being a Georgia Tech fan the last half of the year.

Matchday 4 through 8, dang it 9 Report [part 1/2]:
What Happened Whilst I Was Sequestered in the Wilderness:

So as the end of the year holidays come to a close across Arroza, we who follow the Admirals blindly have to admit that the MVP of the Thanksgiving-Kwanzaa part of the year was the fried turkey and gumbo that our aged relatives cooked and not the Admirals' play in Group two. Just for those of you like myself that went out to see our relatives in the far wilds of Lazarus region and didn't find the games on television or have anything approaching a good enough internet connection to watch the games, here's a very brief rundown:

Week 4: Weegee y Rick Steves [@ Steelworkers' Park, Vulcan, Pine Forest.] [W-15-6]

Look, I know this is a typical Arrozan thing to say negative things about the inland cities of the Commonwealth, but we really need to quit playing games in Pine Forest, or anywhere in South Island north of Petrol Harbour during the end of hurricane season. The weather played a bigger part of the game than anyone wanted to admit, as a driving rainstorm off the Sarzonian Sea brought thirty mile an hour winds and sideways rain to the fans at Steelworkers Park, who were delighted to be soaked, and delighted to see J.D. Albrecht go five of seven in a ridiculous field-position battle that let Arroza play to it's strengths of run-stopping and field goal kicking.

Week 6: @ No, I'm not figuring out how to spell their name. [L 20-6]

I cannot describe this game without cursing. Just know this, this result will not stand. You lose another game like this and there will be a short end to the reign of coach Tulowitzki.

Week 7: Osarius [@ Atalanta] [L 16-37]

I actually went to this game, as it was my first day back in Arroza, and I had a long layover at Atalanta International to catch my connection back to Evangeline. I...

Look, this game was just sad for a number of reasons. We took a team that obviously didn't notice us, that didn't really care about us at all, and while we did good for the first fifteen minuted, it was made completely obvious that we aren't on the same level as teams like this anymore. Don't get me wrond, I loved the trick play to start the game, and the double reverse pass from Cruzan to Northampton for the touchdown on the forst play of the game was sweet. But the other 59 minutes and 35 seconds of the game, we didn't get into the endzone. That's embarrassing, to know that we couldn't score a touchdown, even when they brought in their second team in the fourth quarter. That's just not the type of football I'm used to seeing out of this team in the old days, and what makes it worse is that Arroza wasn't particularly undisciplined or gave up big plays. The team just got pushed around. They just weren't good enough.

I fear they never will be, at this rate.

[OOC: you know I forgot to include WR's in my roster, that's how run-oriented Arroza is. )]

Allamunnic States Daily
Special World Bowl Coverage

Regulars Pummel Darmen
Defense continues dominance

Maybe it's best that the Regulars keep losing a game to a team ranked lower than them every year. It keeps them from becoming complacent. One need only look at their record through their first three games, ending in the 36-30 failure against Chrinthanium versus their next five to notice a huge difference; while in their first three games the Regulars allowed 63 points against them, they've only allowed nineteen since.

Think about that. The defense has not allowed a touchdown since then, and the team as a whole (on one special teams lapse) has allowed only one touchdown since then. This game against Darmen, the team ranked third in the group, was their second shutout in five games. It was their second in the tournament with ten sacks, as well, and Darmenite QB Dennis Caldridge was intercepted three times (by Andrik Ierunmungur, Belle Marquette, and Danny Chessen), and running backs Neal Anderson and Chester Taylor each lost a fumble. Combine that with the Allamunnic offense's ability to protect the ball, and it was another game with a ridiculously high turnover differential (+4; Erikson was intercepted once).

The Regulars scored once in each half. In the first half, the score came off a quick shot from Leif Erikson to tight end Garrett Kelley for an 11-yard touchdown completion, capping off a 14-play, 80-yard, 7:01-minute drive early in the second quarter. The second score came from a play out of the increasingly-infamous "Clydesdale package," where Danyl Wyndhorst charged 3-yards into the endzone after taking a direct snap, with Theo Laansur and Ole Nurdsunn blocking for him. That play finished a 12-play, 84-yard, 9:14-minute drive to effectively put the game away with 3:23 left in the fourth quarter.

The weather didn't have much impact; other than it being cold, there wasn't much snow (a light flurry occurred during the fourth quarter) and even less wind (gusts of maybe five miles per hour were the high for the day).

A question on many peoples' minds is: "Did someone replace the original World Bowl team that showed up with the one from last year?" It's a semi-valid question; ever since that Chrinthanium game, this team's play has been different in almost every possible way. Gone (for the most part) is the at times explosive offense from the first three games, and back is a defense that refuses to surrender points in any notable quantities. The offense has gone from an explosive start to an efficient but less flashy down-the-stretch approach, as Leif Erikson was 15/21 passing for 186 yards and a touchdown and one interception, while Danyl Wyndhorst carried 16 times for 100 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Myers (8 carries, 53 yards) was also efficient, and Ole Nurdsunn (4 carries, 29 yards) made his presence felt on third downs as usual.

Linebacker Steven Lindburgh has had a breakout performance in his rookie year, intercepting several passes and recording several sacks (three in this game against Darmen), and demonstrating he has a knack for making big plays that's made him a defensive mainstay already; when the team shifts into 4-3 sets, it's as likely that Miles Ryan will come out as it is that Lindburgh will come out. The secondary has also been making plays and forcing turnovers like never before, and the line, while relatively quiet, is still key to generating pressure; Honorius Waalturs and Archie Wagner aren't getting the usual attention because the rest of the defense is playing at the same high level that those two always play at.

The Regulars' next game will come against Chrinthanium, the only team to defeat them since last year's World Bowl. Don't think the Regulars have forgotten the embarassing loss to them earlier in qualifiers.

"We're looking forward to the opportunity to play them again," defensive end Ryan Walkerton said. "We want to show that we don't lose to anyone twice in the same tournament."

Danyl Wyndhorst was less bombastic, but no less confident. "We didn't execute the last time we played them. If we keep executing like we have been over the last five games against them, there's no reason we shouldn't come out with the win. But we do have to execute, or we'll be asking for another loss to them. Lucky us, we get home-field advantage in Thomasburg this time. And it's forecasted to snow and blow. A lot." He was smiling when he said this. We can only guess that the Regulars will keep running the ball if that's the case.

Garbongo's seat getting a little toasty

A three game losing streak for the Firebirds has seen Zerabithean coach Robert Garbongo face serious criticisms for the first time since his controversial appointment six years ago. The Osarius national gridiron team's head coach has presided over a defeat to a well-drilled Qazox side who are certainly among the early favourites for the World Bowl now, but also two defeats to the most recent Baptism of Iron champions, Thrilledge, and comparative minnows Weegie and Rick Steves. The latter defeat is the one which appears to have incited the most fury from the Firebirds small, but dedicated following.

Offensive captain and starting quarterback, Tommy Rhodes, was asked if he thought the slump may be related to the sudden illness of his former coach, Utica University's Mike Zampese. Zampese's popularity in Osarius is immense, and it is believed that his being taken infirm suddenly two weeks ago might have been a major blow to the team's mentality. Rhodes, however, was loath to accept that this might have had an impact significant enough to affect the team's performances to such a degree.

"It's had an effect, obviously, but at the end of the day we're professionals. We have a responsibility to go out there and perform, no matter what. I haven't noticed any particularly strong reactions to the news in the dressing room, so I don't think its that simple. [...] Perhaps its just complacency. We were doing really well at the start without really going hard, there haven't been many big plays, or anything like that. We've had a relatively easy ride until Qazox."
- Tommy Rhodes, Osarius Firebirds starting quarterback

The twenty-six year old went on to defend his current coach, too, stating "The boss man isn't doing anything wrong, he can't make plays for us, can he?" While the sentiment is unlikely to quell the rising anger among fans, it might just buy their Zerabithean figurehead enough time to put things right. Interestingly enough, this is the first time since the death of Martin Connors that the Osarius Firebirds coaching position hasn't been linked to Mike Zampese -- for obvious reasons -- and it has uncovered a startling lack of quality gridiron coaches in Osarius. Despite all the talk of Garbongo being on the brink of having his contract terminated, there have been very few names linked with the position. The Zerabithean himself seems untroubled, however.

"We're going through a rough patch. It happens. Everyone will be right back on track soon enough, and we'll be winning games, and nobody will have anything to say again. People only seem to talk about the Firebirds when they aren't doing well. [...] Last I checked, we still have the best offense in the competition so far. I was led to believe that's what the fans wanted, and I have had no suggestions from the ONAC to suggest that my job is in trouble, or anything. I fully intend to continue as I have for the past six years, and do what I can to help this team break into that elite group at the top."
- Robert Garbongo, Osarius Firebirds head coach

The Firebirds have a bye week this time out, but its almost certain that Garbongo will be utilising this time to prepare the team for their trip to Wreuvyvuss where they will be hoping to get the streak-halting win they need, if they are to stay in a good position to reach, let alone be seen as serious contenders in, the World Bowl playoffs.

Chrinthanium Didn't Lose!

Of course, the team didn't play either. Today was their second and final bye of the qualification stage of this World Bowl. Up next for the Imperials is the Allamunnic States team. Chrinthanium is the only team to have beaten the Allamunnic States this year and the Imperials will look to repeat this feat tomorrow. Quarterback Shane Reynolds, who has remained quiet for most of the World Bowl, did speak to reporters this afternoon.

"Well, you see, it really boils down to who wants it more. I don't think that [Allamunic States] wants it bad enough. It's almost as if they expect it. I think we're the team with more passion. That counts. That's what wins games." he stated.

Meanwhile, the search for former Chrinthani National Football coach Mark Norbert continues. Anyone with news on the whereabouts of Coach Mark Norbert should contact Ordona Beach Police at 299 555 1717

Three hours after Sarzonia's dominating 39-10 victory over Tekcirb, Gregg Williams was still wide awake in his hotel room reviewing the DVD his staff had made of his team's defensive performance over the course of the World Bowl qualifying campaign.

Long after notorious partiers and infamous studiers had turned off the lights in their hotel rooms, Williams was still up. He picked up his mobile phone with his finger poised over the speed dial button to ring up defensive coordinator Kirk Olivadotti, then decided the better of it.

I don't think I would have liked it if [former Coach] Joe [Gibbs] would have done that to me, Williams thought. He put down his mobile in frustration, then stood up to check on the pot of coffee that he was brewing to help him stay up.

Only one problem: The outlet he'd plugged in his coffeemaker wasn't compatible with the plug. No current meant no coffee. He stood up and walked outside to the hall, remembering that he saw a coffee machine a few doors down. He then saw the sign hanging on the machine that nearly caused him to punch it.

OUT OF ORDER

FUCK!

He knew there was nothing else right now. He could do down to the lobby and get a cup of coffee there, but he also knew there was a good chance the night crew put it away for the next morning's breakfast.

He realised then that he needed rest. After all, the Stars were still 8-0 and they had all but clinched a spot in the play in matches. He knew the new Weyr Sular rating system had his Stars at No. 1 despite They Who Shall Not Be Named having a much stronger point differential than his team's (plus-148 to plus-112).

But he also knew the inconsistency drove him crazy. He shook his head as he finally got out of the outfit he wore on the Stars sidelines as Gavin Davis completed 21-of-27 passes for 336 yards and four scores, as LoQuan Willard rushed for 100 yard for the first time since tearing his ACL, and as his defence forced five turnovers.

He brushed his teeth, looking at himself in the mirror as the drab T-shirt and lounge pants hung there. He shook his head after he spat out the mixture of toothpaste and water and briefly smiled, revealing the whitened teeth.

"It's got to get better," he said out loud. He finally turned off the light between the two queen-sized beds and tried to go to sleep.

The press conference begins with defensive end Archie Wagner standing in front of a podium, leaning on it casually. His hair is still wet -- he's obviously just finished showering after the team's practice for the day. He's wearing a well-fitting t-shirt and jeans and looks about as relaxed as possible. He gives a little smile and asks the reporters how their day has been. A reporter asks a question and the conference begins.

"What do you think has been most important to the team's successes over the last few weeks?"

Wagner rubs his chin and acts contemplative for a moment. "I'd say it's the fact that the defense has focused on the basics. Good tackling, especially. Just wrapping people up, bringing them down, playing our gap responibilities, playing contain on rushers, the simple things. We've focused on executing those things, and I think we're seeing the benefits now."

"What do you think of your team's chances for a World Championship?"

He laughs, shaking his head. "I have a feeling that if I say what I'm hoping is the case, it'll jinx us. So I'll just say that this team is good enough to do it, if we play as well as we have been."

"Chrinthani quarterback Shane Reynolds has said that he thinks that his team wants to win more than you guys. What do you have to say about that?"

He laughs even harder this time. Shakes his head more, and keeps laughing. Pretending to wipe tears from his eyes, he begins.

"We've been wanting it harder than them since before they knew what the World Bowl was! I have more desire to win in my pinky than their entire team can muster up! And what's more, unlike their countrymen, I can spell both our nation's name and their's correctly!" He points at the camera before saying, "Any Chrinthanis out there watching this, please note that our nation's name is "Allamunnic," not "Allamunic." There is a difference. It's been cropping up a lot. Please spell it right. Any other questions?"

"What do you expect from this week's game?"

"I'm expecting them to give us all we can handle. But they beat us on their turf by one score playing their kind of wimpy, fast-scoring gridiron. The weather in Thomasburg Sunday, though, is looking about perfect for our brand of gridiron. It's gonna be hand-in-the-mud, put-your-pads-on-'em, hard hitting, battle-for-every-inch gridiron on Sunday. And we've been doing that better than anyone else for the last seven years. Anyone else?"

There is silence in the room.

"Alright, thanks, then! I'll hopefully see you all in the stands on Sunday in Thomasburg, then!"

Staying Afloat

With the standings released after Thatius' bare win over Arcatea yesterday, many were hopeful that this year could be something special. Could they possibly make it to the play-off stage of the tournament? Hope still remains for many, as the Pumas are now "on top" of their group, tied with Civil Citizenry for first. Maybe their standing in Weyr Sular's Rankings will improve some. But hey, rankings are just that- rankings. They don't mean that much, unless you are really in the top ten. Let's look towards the next few games that Thatius will play.

@ Beldonia

Tomorrow's match looks pretty good- for Beldonia. Not only are the Pumas playing in Beldonia, they will have to overcome the memory of their last heart-breaking loss to them.

vs. Civil Citizenry

The Thatian Pumas barely scrapped by with a win over Civil Citizenry. However, this may or may not be the same team they faced previously. They also have had a good streak going into the final stages of group play, and will certainly hope to capitalize on last minutes games in order to secure a place in the play-offs.

@ Bluth Corporation

You might as well call it the Horror Story of Thatius. The Bluth Corporation has defeated the Pumas twice out of the three meetings they have had, and does not get a number three ranking for nothing. Expect a tighter game than before; we certainly don't believe that Bluth will downplay the Pumas this time. Revenge, as they say, is sweet. QB Saleski will need to come out with amazing touchdowns if they want to upset one of the greatest teams in the world.

vs. West Guiana

Uhh..what? Sorry, we don't really want to talk about this loss. Not only was it severely embarrassing, it just gave Thatius a bad picture. I mean, there were over four turnovers on Thatius, including three fumbles. The ball carriers had some pathetic play going on, and it showed in the scoreboard. Let's hope that after finishing through with Bluth, Civil Citizenry, and Beldonia, that the Pumas will be confident enough to take this match against West Guiana to the bank.

Explorers fans across the country have reacted poorly to a new World Bowl-exclusive ranking system devised by the Weyr Sularian company Korinthaelium. A 1-1 record with Bluth Corporation in their head-to-head matchups has served to vault the world number three to number four in the KWBRS, while Civil Citizenry has yet to break the top twenty. "It's preposterous," lamented Iron Men analyst Hyatt Creighton, "and disappointing, too."

But none of it matters to the people who matter the most: the Explorers themselves. The tight leadership of Palmer Manning has ensured the team is not being distracted by any outside rating formulas. "It doesn't matter how we're subjectively compared to some of the traditionally good teams," Manning explained. "The only lists we're assessing are the opponents' rosters and the group standings."

At least the Explorers are doing pretty well in that area. Their most recent game, another blowout win over West Guiana, has them tied for second, mere percentage points behind Bluth Corporation. It is assumed that Civil Citizenry will need to win out from here to have any hope of automatically passing the first playoff round by finishing atop the group.

Winning the group would be quite an accomplishment for Civil Citizenry, which was drawn in the third pot and has only barely cracked the top twenty in the international football rankings. Yet they haven't seemed to take full advantage of the several slips made by the higher seeds, Bluth Corporation and the Babbage Islands, stuck in a logjam at the top where four teams are within a win of first place.

Though the fans aren't terribly happy about the newfangled statistics that have accompanied the Cassadaigua World Bowl (specifically, the KWBRS), "at least they're getting a lot of excitement out of it all," said Creighton. Indeed, no other group is so bunched together - which is turning out to be a plus for the Explorers. "If Bluth Corporation were as dominant as they were in the past - if they were playing like Qazox or Sarzonia - our team would only be playing for second or third. Then they wouldn't have the motivation they need to win."

That motivation was sparked last tournament by losing the first two games of the group stage. Manning, then in his first edition at the helm, quickly fed his players fire - and they responded, winning an astounding ten of their next eleven games, including two wins over the current hosts, Cassadaigua, and victories over Allamunnic States and Qazox. (It should be noted that the latter two squads are rated by the KWBRS as fourth and second, respectively.) Creighton's analysis is that without facing some adversity or uphill struggle, the Explorers wouldn't feel the same urgency to play hard and win every single game.

If they're not feeling that sense of urgency now, millions of fans are hoping they kick it in very soon. The squad has just four games left, including a road match versus that pesky Babbage team and a rematch with Thatius at ChocoMilk Amfootball Arena. One loss, and they could find themselves matched against an Osarius or an F1-Insanity.

Or a Kytler Peninsulae. "That wouldn't be so bad," Manning said with a heavy laugh. He doesn't have much of those this time of the year, but a couple more wins could continue to loosen up the Boss.

World Bowl XVI
The Road To Cassadaigua

Game 8: @ Thrilledge

As has been their wont during these qualifiers, Qazox' offense once again showed up to play on the road in a 54-3 drubbing of Thrilledge that keeps the Sharks at 8-0, tied with Sarzonia for the best record so far. Jake Levy, suprisingly, wasn't lights-out brilliant, throwing for only 301 yards and 2 TD's. Brian kelly wasn't great either, despite getting 3 total TD's, as he finished with only 95 yards rushing. So how did Qazox score 54 points? Special teams play and defense, what else? 2 returns by Mike Stephens, who had 217 total return yards. That along with a fumble return from Jessie Camp helped the Sharks today, as did forcing 6 turnovers. Up next, Qazox heads back home to face Weegee and Rick Steves. With a Qazox win and losses by both Osarius and Wreuvyvuss; the Sharks would be the first team to clinch a group title.

3 big plays of the day:

#3- Stephens' 74-yard punt return for TD in the 4th quarter. Qazox was up 47-0 at the time, but the way Stephens broke 4 tackles and tip-toed his way down the sideline was a highlight that will be shown for quite a while.

#2- Camp's fumble recovery in the endzone for a TD to put Qazox up 35-0 in the 2nd quarter. After Blastings Thrilledge was sacked by Adam Dansbury, the ball squirted loose and Camp just beat out Thrilledge for the recovery and the onslaught was on.

#1- Stephens' 101-yard Kickoff return for a TD on the opening kickoff. Yeah, once that happened, you knew it would be a long day for Thrilledge.

Matchday 8 Report: Qazox 19, Arroza 13
Moral Victories Mean Less Than Nothing.

I know this game is now a week old, but I feel like I have to say something about it very quickly. First, this is the first game I've seen where the Admirals showed some real passion. That's very important, and it's what's going to separate the men from the boys in getting out of this division.

Those of you who read Qazian?...Qazoxian? blogs already have gotten good insight about the game and the defensive play of both Newmarket and the stop on Bradley at the nine yard line. I can't really talk about losses too much, my therapist said it's a bad idea to get emotionally involve in these games. Just know this, it was a game where I think we all finally saw flashes of the old Arrozan team show up.

And it means nothing because we still lost and are 2-5 in the group.

At least our fans got to use their, “Thanks for the title” chants.

Matchday 9 Report: Arroza 34, Narsora 16
Just When I Thought We Were Mathmatically Out.......

This is how the Admirals are supposed to play! Storm out to an early lead, then just put your foot on the opponent's neck and choke the life out of them. Just take all the air out of the ball with your defensive play, and option running game destroying the clock. Narsora as we all know, beat Arroza on Matchday 2 23-10 in Narsora, but the rematch in Atalanta was a thing of beauty as the Admirals finally showed how much they've inproved since the beginning of the tournament with a solid win.

The game started with the Admiral offense imposing their will on the Narsoran defense with a 12 play, 80 yard drive ending with a six yard toss sweep left to Bradley into the endzone. The blocking was pretty crisp, and for once Cruzan and Comfort out on the wings blocked the corners well enough to allow our guys to get to the edge and make plays when we needed to.

The game was over by halftime with two more rushing touchdowns, one to the B-Back Pete Stamford, running through the defense for a four yard touchdown, and with Bradley breaking off the Admirals biggest play of the game with a 47 yard run on a toss sweep for a touchdown, right before the half.

Scoring Summary:
1st quarter
Arroza – 6 yd rush TD / D. Bradley / PAT Good [J.D. Albrecht] / [12 play, 80 yards, 7:21] 7-0 Arroza
Narsora – 37 yd FG / 7-3 Arroza
2nd quarter
Arroza – 4 yd rush TD / P. Stamford / PAT Good [J.D. Albrecht] / [10 play, 76 yards, 6:13] 14-3 Arroza
Arroza – 47 yd rush TD / D. Bradley / PAT Good [J.D. Albrecht] / [6 play, 69 yards, 4:11] 21-3 Arroza
3rd quarter
Arroza – 37 yd FG / J.D. Albrecht / [4 plays, 8 yds, 1:41] 24-3 Arroza
Narsora – 46 yd FG / 24-6 Arroza
Arroza – 2 yd rush / E. White-Rivers / PAT Good [J.D. Albrecht] / [14 play, 84 yards, 7:56] 31-6 Arroza
4th quarter

What does it all mean?

Well we've got Thrilledge coming to the home of the Submariners, Queen's Bay next week. If we win this game, we'll have 4 wins and be at most a game behind Wreyv-, and we'll have already played Qazox twice. We'll be 4-5. Sure 4 and 5 sounds bad but in this division 6-6 might get you into the playoffs. Get on a two game run, and we'll be in fine position for a bye before the final stretch when Wreyv- comes to Fletcher Field, and a final day match at Osarius.

Final day match @ Osarius? Damn you Margaret.

World Bowl XVI
The Road To Cassadaigua

Game 9: v. Weegee and Rick Steeves

Once again it is time for the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

The Good news: Qazox still has a 2.5 game lead in the group over Osarius and a 3.5 game lead over Wreuvyvuss with 3 to play for the Sharks, and 4 to play for the other two teams. Meaning: Qazox just needs a win to clinch a playoff berth and a win and an Osarius loss to clinch the group and a 1st round bye. Sarzonia lost today also, meaning Qazox is still in line for one of the top seeds.
Brian Kelly had a season-high 236 yards rushing and 3 TD's, as Weegee and Rick Steves basically forced Qazox to prove they can run the ball.
Mike Stephens had an average of 15.7 yards on punt returns and 28.5 of kickoff returns.

The Bad News: The defense, which up to this game had been one of the better ones in qualifying, had an off day. Luckily it was during the group stage, not the playoffs; but it showed that if you don't focus 100%, it can come back and haunt you.
Weegee and Rick Steves just gave a complete gameplan to all our future opponents as to effectively nueter Jake Levy. Levy went 9-40 on the day with just 1 TD and 158 yards and 2 INT's; one of his worst performances.
Weegee and Rick Steves had the ball for 41:18 as compared to 18:42 for Qazox.

The Ugly News: Qazox has never been a good team at trying 2-pt conversions and our kickers historically do tend to have a strong case of the yips. But at home, just down by one point, with momentum and the clock on your side (13 seconds left when Brian Kelly scored); Why did Coach John Aries go for two? To prevent a tie that actually would help the team's playoff chances? Or to give Levy one more pass attempt? Or was is simply to win the game and the playcall was just plan wrong for the situation? W&RS' gameplan all day was to allow Qazox to run, seeing as they played most of the game in a dime-Cover 3- man, preventing the type of passes Levy attempted to throw on the 2-pt conversion. Kelly had just scored from almost the exact same place on the field, not 20 seconds earlier! Coach Aries, unless it's the final play of the World Bowl itself, and Qazox is still down by 2 points after scoring a TD; please do not ever again go for two!

3 big plays of the day:

#3- Weegee and Rick Steve's WR #80. Just was a beast today, especially on his 74-yd TD catch, as he out-leaped Jessie Camp, then out-raced both Nate Ogando and Wayne Buck for the go-ahead TD in the 4th quarter.

#2- Until now, i don't think we've mentioned Sean Haggerty, Qazox' Punter. He's been steady, a 46.3 yd average, 36.5 net average; 27 of 38 punts inside the 20 with just 2 touchbacks, so far. But his last punt of the day, a 57 yarder that pinned WR&S at their own 4, shifting the field towards Qazox, allowing them a short field after a 3-and out to set up the final drive.

#1- Qazox going for two with 11 seconds left and failing on a screen pass from Levy to Eric Weeks. As stated above in the BAD, WR&S had been stifling Qazox' passing attack all day long, and Kelly had just scored from almost the same point on the field. Granted, the box was stacked against the run, but a screen pass on the short-side of the field rarely works that close to the endzone and WR&S read it perfectly.

Regulars Down Chrinthanium
Get revenge for upset with win in snowy Thomasburg

The weather shut down Shane Reynolds, and the defense wrecked the Chrinthani rushing attack, limiting them to two field goals during the game (both in the first half; three second-half turnovers meant the Chrinthanis never even got those in the second half). Meanwhile, Phillipa Demirici knocked in a chip-shot from 20-yards out to keep the Regulars tied with the upstarts in the first half before Danyl Wyndhorst's 23-yard touchdown run in the late third quarter put the Regulars up 10-6.

Zofya Hanriksun got the start for the Regulars as they never even bothered with anything besides the option-style attack that they've adopted at times to deal with snowy weather. Hanriksun passed a little, going 4/6 for 33 yards, but her main contribution, like much of the offense, was running, carrying seven times for 28 yards. Wyndhorst led the team (13 carries, 101 yds, TD), followed closely by Ryan Myers (12 carries, 76 yds), and Ole Nurdsunn (5 carries, 45 yds) made big contributions once again. Also rushing for the Regulars were Myra Dercik (4 carries, 31 yds), Willy Theodore (2 carries, 14 yds) and John Kaiser (3 carries, 9 yds) for a total of 304 rushing yards on a team-high 47 carries, and 337 total offensive yards.

Equally important were the five turnovers forced by the defense, three of them fumbles in the redzone that saved the Regulars touchdowns. The first two were in the third quarter: one was forced by Theo Laansur and was recovered quickly by Miles Ryan at the Allamunnic 12-yard line, the other forced by Laansur and recovered by Honorius Waalturs at the Allamunnic 7-yard line. The third fumble was stripped by linebacker Danley Vicious, and was promptly recovered by Steven Lindburgh early in the fourth. Shane Reynolds, who thought he wanted it more, was also intercepted twice, once in the endzone by Belle Marquette in the first quarter, and the other time by Lindburgh after a low throw caroomed off of Theo Laansur's hands in the second quarter.

Emblematic of the Chrinthani's defeat was their refusal to give up on the pass, despite Reynolds' struggles during a game with poor visability, wind, and snow that resulted in two interceptions and also caused him to hold onto the ball for a long time, leading to six sacks by the Allamunnic defense. Chrinthani runningbacks were frequently stuffed at the line.

The Regulars offense wasn't exactly explosive, either, frequently coming up short on third downs and being forced to punt. Nevertheless, they avoided any potentially-deflating turnovers, which likely helped them come out with the victory here.

Coach Smart was very pleased with the game's result. "They got to beat us at their style of gridiron in their house, and we got to show us they couldn't compete with our type of game in our house. I liked the grit that our boys and girls played with, and that they kept stepping up to make plays to win this game. You may notice we've now clinched a playoff spot, and that's thanks to our boys and girls' hard work and grit, sticking in there to win the tough ones."

The Regulars now hold an 8-1 record with several games to go, but they do appear to have locked up a playoff spot. Their next game will be against Miley World on the road, another team that should give the Regulars a test. But it's the tough ones that teams have to win to win championships. Hopefully, that is what the road the Regulars are on will turn out to be.

Looks confusing, doesn't it? That big standings board, with all the teams in group 2 surging up and down, up and down. All you really want to know is will the Admirals make the playoffs and get a trip to The Matriarchy? Well its time for this blog's premier segment, “Mathmatical standings for idiots!”

Well let's start at the beginning [normally a good place to start].

Group 2 Standings

Team P W D L For Ag +/- Pts
1 Qazox 9 8 0 1 276 129 +147 24 Q
2 Osarius 9 6 0 3 314 197 +117 18
3 Arroza 10 5 0 5 206 229 -23 15
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - – - - - - -
4 Wreuvyvuss 9 4 0 5 191 240 -49 12
5 Weegee and Rick Steves 10 3 1 6 250 316 -66 10
6 Narsora 9 3 1 5 165 190 -25 10
7 Thrilledge 10 3 0 7 194 295 -101 9

Three teams get in and Arroza's floating above the Mendoza line. But there are two games to go! Some teams have three games to go! We still have to play Osarius! Oh noez! It's all so complicated!

Chill out, young surfers. First of all, let's take Qazox out of the picture. No one's sensibly catching them, and they're already qualified for the playoffs. Let's take Osarius out because they're pretty much qualified. And let's take out Thrilledge. We can do that because even if you only end up needing 15 points to qualify, we've beaten them head to head, so we're above them.

Group 2 Standings

Team P W D L For Ag +/- Pts

3 Arroza 10 5 0 5 206 229 -23 15
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - – - - - - -
4 Wreuvyvuss 9 4 0 5 191 240 -49 12
5 Weegee and Rick Steves 10 3 1 6 250 316 -66 10
6 Narsora 9 3 1 5 165 190 -25 10

Simpler, no? Four teams fighting over one spot. And week 12 is coming. We take a break at the beach, Wreuvyvuss plays Qazox [sweet], Weegee y Rick Steves plays Thrilledge, and Narsora plays Osarius.

Is Narsora beating Osarius or Wreuvyvuss beating Qazox. NO. Is Weegee y Rick Steves losing to Thrilledge? Prolly not, but let's assume they win for the sake of discussion. Here's your table then:

Group 2 Standings

Team P W D L For Ag +/- Pts

3 Arroza 10 5 0 5 206 229 -23 15
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - – - - - - -
5 Wreuvyvuss 10 4 0 6 191 240 -49 12
4 Weegee and Rick Steves 11 3 1 6 250 316 -66 13
6 Narsora 10 3 1 6 165 190 -25 10

Still a bit confusing with a bunch of teams trying to catch the Admirals. Now here's the kill shot.

As long as we beat Wreuvyvuss week 13, nothing else matters. We beat them, we have 18 points going into the Osarius game. Wreuvyvuss has twelve if they lose to Qazox. They would be six points back going into the last week. They would be done.

If we win, Narsora could catch us based on the standings right now, but they would have to go 3-0 with games against Osarius, Qazox and Weegee y Rick Steves. That's not going to happen, we win and we can comfortably clear them off the list, hopefully in the bye week while we're all drinking caipirinhas.

Weegee y Rick Steves can only max out at 16 points. We beat Wreuvyvuss we've got 18. Thanks for playing, thanks for being weak and shipping two losses to the Admirals just like the Atalanta papers predicted.

Even if Wreuvyvuss beats Qazox AND who ever they're playing week 14 AND if we lose to Osarius on the last game of qualifying, if we beat them, then we both have 18 points and a 6-6 record. We split head to head. Then it goes to point differential, and we've got a twenty-six point lead on them right now, not counting whatever we beat them by.

So it's simple.

If the Admirals beat Wreuvyvuss next Friday at Fletcher Field, then we can all go buy our tickets to the Matriarchy. The logic cannot be broken. And that my friends, is football standings and probability made easy.
