Just for some friendly discussion, I was just wondering, should we continue the practice of voting people into the Council? This is the only competition that does this and I don't really remember in the early days why we adopted the practice. It seems like membership will take care of itself with the minimum requirements of a roster and a RP.

I would be curious if anyone who happens to read my post right now, and does not participate in the WBC, is turned off by this and that becomes a big reason why they are not part of the competition?

It's been that way since before I got here, and I don't feel strongly about it one way or the other.

One of the main reasons, if not the primary reason, voting was implemented was puppet protection. We had a regular participant (Qazox) have himself and two puppets in the competition (Prux and Green Wombat), that were undeclared. It took a while before Qazox fessed up (which was really in the World Cup Discussion Thread as opposed to here). Before he fessed up, there were a few of us who were highly suspicious of it. Voting was implemented after that charade, but done with the idea in mind that we could not allow the same user to have multiple votes, especially in regards to hosting voting.

Since then, the forum rules have evolved, and there is a puppet policy in place where suspicions can be raised to moderation, so in a sense one of the biggest concerns is no longer a concern. This is a good time for the discussion, after a vote just have five out of eight people abstain. (I was one of them). I like having the vote, we did recently have one other nation (North Prarie) that had an (at least one) undeclared puppet (Stetzra, in the 75 nation WBC). North Prarie did come up for a vote, and was voted against. Even then, the system worked. Today, people have differing reasons which they do not need to defend, as to whether they vote for or against, but a 62.5% abstain rate is an eye opener.

I like it. I think it distinguishes the WBC from the other tournaments.

I feel some sports on NSS allow weak RPers too much voting power (including in cricket, where I'm joint-president, and have been trying to change things); the WBC Council's voting rule kind of protects against someone who might have little knowledge of baseball or running tournaments on NSS from having a major say in the various WBC functions, and I'm all for it.

Since I forgot to post it here earlier, here's the WBC 47 Everything Thread. The draw for MD1 will be conducted momentarily.

Baseinator 1.3 is out now. You can download it here (Source). The major changes are the addition of home field advantage, a change to the constants to reduce randomness and a change to the scorinate x home and away games option. The change allows for the scorination of x games with the Team A followed by x games with Team B at home (as opposed to alternating home and away which was the only option in earlier versions). This option was added for the purposes of this WBC.

There's also a change to the license which was done for the sake of making the license explicitly compatible with the GPL as I realized that the license I released my scorinators under is likely not GPL compatible. This will be applied to all of my scorinators whenever I release new versions but anybody wishing to include the code for any of the existing versions of my scorinators in a GPL-licensed scorinator is welcome to do so.

I have discovered that some debug code was left in Baseinator 1.3. This code, which should have been commented out of the released version, does not affect the results in any way.

I will be releasing Baseinator 1.3.1 when I have time to fix this bug and will switch the WBC over to the new version. The only change will be the removal of this debug code that prints out the rank+bonus of the various teams and their run scoring probability.

As tomorrow is a scheduled off day, I'm going to delay the Series 5 cutoff until morning. Cutoff will happen whenever I wake up. We will return to the usual cutoff window on Sunday night for Series 6.

Baseinator 1.3.1 is now available (Source). This new version removes the debug code that was accidentally left in version 1.3 and separates the new "home-then-away series" option from the old "home-and-away series" option for ease of use.

As the Free Republics is guaranteed to play at least a tiebreaker game, I will need a 3rd party scorinator who is comfortable using Baseinator to scorinate my playoff games and who will be available during the cutoff window. I can help as needed with understanding how to use Baseinator. In particular, the default constants file will need to be modified for the playoffs as the new home field advantage feature should be turned off for playoff games.

My IC information will be up shortly. Tonight's cutoff will follow the posting of my IC information as I anticipate some of my ballparks will likely be required for tiebreaker games (I'm only aware of 1 past Casaran tournament that ended without the "tied with the team in the last qualifying spot = at least a playoff" rule coming into effect).
