Perhaps it has something to do with our rankings? Have you always been ranked in the 30s?

That's probably something to ask Equestrian about, or anyone else who has hosted a WBC. I don't know how exactly the group drawings work.

This was how I did it last time (in terms of ES's groups, and assuming 1-60 ranks):

1. Group teams by ranks (1-10; 11-20; 21-30, etc.) That guarantees- for me, at least - that one group doesn't have all top 10 teams, a la SEC football (third place at 8-2 not making it, while a 6-4 second place does.) We all know, though, Margaret is weird like that.

2. Using a deck of cards - the only non PC use I do - I run through the teams and place them in groups based on card. All of the group one teams either had the ace come up or were the last squad having only that open.

That system ma not be perfect, but for me, it works.

Edit: Ninja'd by Lycrabon, but here's my explanation:

Western cuba wrote:That's probably something to ask Equestrian about, or anyone else who has hosted a WBC. I don't know how exactly the group drawings work.

Okay, here's how it works (or at least how I did it):

The teams were divided into six pots based on rank so that we didn't end up with something crazy like Milchama and WC in the same group. I then used a random number generator to assign each team in each pot to a different group. Finally, I used another random number generator to scramble the names so that not all the first seeds play all the second seeds on the same MD. There will probably be some overlap with that, but it won't be all at once.

So what happened was that you two were in different pots and you happened to be drawn into the same group thanks to the RNG. Things like this happen fairly regularly, though not to everyone every tournament. For example, I was drawn into the same qualifying group as Pretty Awesome Persons in my first two World Cups and (more recently) have faced one of Jeruselem's two teams in the Cup of Harmony in each of the last two WC cycles.

Clear now?

Also...

Western cuba wrote:I am the Champion of Margaret!
*Sacrifices rubber chicken*

Oh really? So how many did you have to sacrifice to avoid getting drawn into the same group as me? Because we both know what would happen with that group. :p

Whenever I do draws, I get out real pots and pans, write the competing nation's names on a piece of paper, cut them out, put them in their respective pot based on ranks, and procede to have my parents draw them out at random. It takes way longer than it needs too, but I love it when my parents try to pronounce some of the nation names. Makes me laugh.

Literal pots for teams. I love it. Hey, have they ever had to try and pronounce my name?

Thanks for the explanation Equestrian.

Oh and by the way, how would you feel if I switched from burning rubber chickens to rubber horses instead? I'm quite sure that wouldn't have too dire consequences... ;)

:lol2: Genius! I'll have to keep something like that in mind for the future.

Eh. Yours isn't too bad. Licentiapacisterra, on the other hand, could be hilarious.

I think you'd be risking offending someone with even more power over the scores than me, but you can try that if you want to. Although the mental image I have of somebody dancing around a life-sized burning rubber horse is rather amusing.

Licentiapacisterra...it sounds like some terrible disease.

And trust me Equestrian, I can imagine it too. I can also imagine the consequences of doing it in my backyard after only moving in two weeks ago. But it still would be hilarious.

Oh and before I get off for the night, I have a question for Darmen. Do your parents even know what your doing it for?

So far I've only done the aforementioned system for the Copa Rushmori and the Rugby World Cup that I've hosted. I don't believe you were in either one. Not to mention that its my parents jobs to do the pronouncing.

Hmm, well that was interesting. Word to the wise, try to make as few changes as possible to yoru roster following a classic. I basically redid almost all of my roster, and it took quite the amount of time.

Now on to the Copa Rushmori!

My problem with that is that a handful of my Federal Team players are on teams that were just relegated or have been languishing in the minors for a couple of years. A couple of them are OK with it for now, but ICly I can't justify certain others staying on their teams. For example, a world-class slugger wouldn't just wait forever for the B-series team around him to get better. So I will have to modify my roster..and I'm not sure when I can get around to that. Probably tomorrow.

Just spent some time reading the Wiki page of this event. Well done, first, to the one that compiles these statistics.

What strikes me most is that out of 24 Classics, there have only been 11 Champions but right now seems to be the most wide open era of the tournament. Otherwise looks like some amazing things have happened.
