Invitational Sport Proposal: Beachball
OOC: this sport does not have a scorinator. I made it up, and have actually played it with some friends. It's fun
Beachball is a sport played on a rectangular field on (and here's a shocker) a beach! The field is 50m by 30m. The field has a volleyball net on one end, and on the other, a 10ft by 10ft box (called the kickoff box). Right in the middle of the field, equidistant from the box and net, is a small dot called the kickoff mark. Before the game, and at each technical time out, the field is spritzed with a fine mist to keep it reasonably firm.
Gameplay:
There are 2 sides on each team: offense and defense. Each team has 4 players on the field at a time, and 2 substitutes per side (i.e. Squads are 12 players). The visiting team may choose whether they would like to defend or advance for the first set. The match begins with a kickoff. The ball (a volleyball) is placed on the kickoff mark and kicked to the offense, who must have all their players inside the box until the kick is recieved. The objective of the kicker is to place it so the ball bounces in the box, then goes out of bound, or is touched by a recieving player and then touches the sand out of bounds. This will switch possesion. The recieving team, after having recieved the ball, must complete 2 passes before anyone may leave the box. A defender may only enter the box if an offensive player or the ball has left the box. The offense is trying to score goals by throwing the ball over the net and having it TOUCH THE GROUND ON THE OTHER SIDE. Defensive players may hit it back over. To try for a goal, the offensive team must have completed three passes. They need not be consecutive.
DEFENSE
The goal of the defense is to stop the offense from scoring. They do this by regaining their teams possesion by changing the kickoff. To change the kickoff, a defensive player must touch the ball in the kickoff box, while it is not in the possesion of an offensive player. Defense (and offense) may tackle to get the ball away. Tackling is like rugby. Once the tackled player touches the ground, he/she must release the ball. A tackle may only be performed on 1. A player in pssesion of the ball 2. A player about to gain pssesion of the ball (i.e you may tackle someone as they recieve a pass) 3. A person who has just released the ball (cant stop you if they passed the ball while you were flying at them).
SCORING
as i mentioned, the sport need a scorinator. Beachball is played in 6 sets, each to 6 goals. If a match is tied 3 sets to 3 sets, and it is necessary, a tiebreaker set to 3 goals will be played. Here are some results:
a regular match:
team a 6 5 2 6 0 3- 2
team b 4 6 6 1 6 6- 4
a tie:
team a 6 6 3 0 0 6- 3
team b 0 1 6 6 6 5- 3
a cream:
team a 6 6 5 6 6 x- 5
team b 3 4 6 2 5 x- 1
*note: a team need not play unnesescary sets. After the fifth set, the score was 4-1 , and a sixth was not needed. This counts as 5-1.
Destruction:
team a 0 3 4 2 x x- 0
team b 6 6 6 6 x x- 6
tie with OT:
team a 3 6 2 6 6 5 3- 3 (3)
team b 6 5 6 1 0 6 1- 3 (1)
we suggest pool play followed by knockout.
thank you!
