Mcleod Cup VI for Babbage rules football (complete)

Postby The Babbage Islands » Fri Sep 30, 2011 7:00 am

Mcleod Cup VI
An international Babbage rules football tournament

Jump to draw and schedule

The Mcleod Cup is the premier international competition in Babbage rules football. Cup management issue a call for teams representing the nations of the world, be they bona fide national select teams, professional or amateur clubs, universities or other bodies, to gather at Wye, South Island to compete in Mcleod Cup VI.

We have 22 teams entered from the last tournament, and are prepared to accept any multiple of four up to 32 teams. Should more than 32 teams apply they will be accepted first come, first served. A maximum of one team per nation and two teams per controlling entity will be observed. (Various puppets of the host nation are available if and only if needed by management to fill out the field to a multiple of four teams.)

The competition will run over two weeks, with six match days scheduled. The first week will see the contestants divided into four-team pools using a pot-system draw that recognises international rankings. A single round-robin of three games per team will be contested in each pool. The second week will see the field split into single-elimination brackets to contest the Mcleod Cup and also (in descending order of precedence) the Plate, Bowl, and Shield minor awards in a manner frankly borrowed from rugby sevens competition.

Tuesday, October 11 -- Pool play, round 1
Thursday, October 13 -- Pool play, round 2
Saturday, October 15 -- Pool play, round 3

Monday, October 17 -- Quarterfinal matches
Wednesday, October 19 -- Semifinal matches
Friday, October 21 -- Final matches

A technical document is appended that outlines precise structures for varying numbers of teams.

Basic organisation

Pool play is single round-robin in pools of four teams, drawn using a pot system. The exact order of matches varies according to the built-in schedules of the scorinator.

All teams advance from pool play into one of four three-round, single-elimination* tournaments. In order of prestige they are the Cup, the Plate, the Bowl, and the Shield. (* In certain circumstances, first-round losers parachute into the second round of a lesser competition.)

Quarterfinals are paired by overall rank from pool play, with all first-places ahead of second-places, all seconds ahead of thirds, and all thirds ahead of fourths.

Cup/Plate Quarterfinals: All first-place and second-place teams. Best two third-place teams.

Ranking of teams from pool play

  1. Total competition points based on 3 per win, 2 per draw, and 1 per loss.
  2. When exactly two teams in a pool tie on competition points, their relative standing in the pool is based on the result of the head-to-head match between the teams.
  3. If #1 is tied and #2 is inapplicable or indecisive, teams are ranked based on net margin of points for minus points against in their three matches.
  4. If #3 is indecisive, teams are ranked based on total points for in their three matches.
  5. If #4 is indecisive, ranking is determined by lot.

Technical support will be provided using the xkoranate 0.3.2 system. Fair play assessments (OOC: RP bonus) are generous and based on an accumulation of performances for each round. Early submission of team rosters to facilitate media coverage is viewed favourably in addition to other efforts.

Future editions of the Mcleod Cup will be scheduled annually (OOC: Babbage time--monthly IRL), instead of the ad hoc scheduling of the past. To ease the burden on federations and encourage continuity of programmes, all nations that enter and complete the sixth Cup will automatically receive complimentary entry to the seventh Cup without further application. Of course, requests to not receive automatic entry will be honoured, and such entry will be withdrawn should the national federation cease to exist.

Mcleod Cup VII is expected to begin on November 8.
Mcleod Cup VIII is expected to begin on December 13 (and finish on December 23, just before holidays).

For all the latest news regarding Darmeni and International Babbage Rules Competition

2011 DBRF League Predictions
Tamarindian Invite Preview
Mcleod Cup VI Predictions

Mcleod Cup VI Predictions

Pool One
1. Darmen(C-1)
2. Armorgames(P-4)
3. Garon-Averia(B-5)
4. Cyborg Holland(B-7)
This is a relatively easy group for Darmen to be in, as the Darmeni team really only has to worry about Armorgames. We expect Darmen to go undefeated.

Pool Two
1. Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk(C-5)
2. Cassadaigua(C-8)
3. Chuckio(B-4)
4. Solra(S-1)
Cassadaiguan Babbage Rules is on the decline, and the Alphabet Soup team will swing in and steal the show. Chuckio will probably have difficulty against Solra, but in the end they'll be victorious.

Pool Three
1. Tamarindia(C-2)
2. Tarrentum(P-5)
3. Krytenia(P-8)
4. The Kytler Peninsulae(B-8)
Krytenia is in a decline just like Cassadaigua, and Tamarindia, as defending champions will take advantage of this. Tamarindia should finish undefeated. The Kytler Peninsulae should keep things close in their games against Tarrentum and Krytenia, but in the end their inexperience will hurt them.

Pool Four
1. Wolfmanne(C-6)
2. Kerblaekistan(P-6)
3. Civil Citizenry(B-1)
4. Mytannion(B-6)
Our hated rivals in Wolfmanne arn't exaclty known for their Babbage Rules play, but Pool Four is very weak. Kerblaekistan, Civil Citizenry, and Mytannion will end up in a mumbo jumbo bottom of the table, so it'll be exciting to watch how they end up.

Pool Five
1. Wadomia(C-7)
2. Beldonia(P-3)
3. The Babbage Islands(P-7)
4. Tekcrib(S-4)
We were very suprised to see that our simulator picked Wadomia and Beldonia to upset The Babbage Islands. But we'll go with the picks anyway. The Babbage Islands never really have been that impressing while playing against international teams, so we can see how they might be upset prone against Wadomia and Beldonia, ia, ia, ia.

Pool Six
1. Andossa Se Mitrin Vega(C-3)
2. Spitfyred1(P-2)
3. Vettera(B-3)
4. Mossulia(S-2)
ASMV, like Darmen, also looks to have an easy group to play against. Spitfyred1 might provide a suprise upset, but for the most part ASMV has this all locked up.

Pool Seven
1. Delaclava(C-4)
2. Thatius(P-1)
3. Carmadin(B-2)
4. Megadia(S-3)
Pool Seven looks like it could be tough. Delaclavan Babbage Rules is in a decline, and Thatius did very well at Mcleod Cup V. Carmadin could also do well, but in the end we thinkk that the experience of Delaclava will help them win. Megadia, in their first appearence, looks completly overmatched.

K1 Shield Quarterfinal: 1-Solra over 4-Tekcrib
K2 Shield Quarterfinal: 2-Mossulia over 3-Megadia

Solra should have an easy time against Tekcrib, but the Mossulia and Megadia game is a bit of a toss up. We expect Mossulia to win though.

K3 Bowl Quarterfinal: 1-Civil Citizenry over 8-The Kytler Peninsulae
K4 Bowl Quarterfinal: 4-Chuckio over 5-Garon-Averia
K5 Bowl Quarterfinal: 3-Vettera over 6-Mytannion
K6 Bowl Quarterfinal: 2-Carmadin over 7-Cyborg Holland

Civil Citizenry and The Kytler Peninsulae game could be the begining of a Rushmori-Babbage Rivalry. Chuckio should do well enough to defeat Garon-Averia, while the Mytannion Babbage team, which hasn't been very succesful at all, will loose to Vettera. Carmadin will have an easy time against Cyborg Holland.

K7 Plate Quarterfinal: 1-Thatius over 8-Krytenia
K8 Plate Quarterfinal: 4-Armorgames over 5-Tarrentum
K9 Plate Quarterfinal: 3-Beldonia over 6-Kerblaekistan
K10 Plate Quarterfinal: 2-Spitfyred1 defeated by 7-The Babbage Islands

Krytenian Babbage Rules has been in a steady decline since Mcleod Cup II. Up and coming Thatius should have what it takes to beat Krytenia. Armorgames versus Tarrentum looks to be a good competitive matchup, as does Beldonia versus Kerblaekistan. As for Spitfyred1, they'll run into an angry Babbage Islands team, and loose.

K11 Cup Quarterfinal: 1-Darmen over 8-Cassadaigua
K12 Cup Quarterfinal: 4-Delaclava over 5-Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk
K13 Cup Quarterfinal: 3-Andossa Se Mitrin Vega over 6-Wolfmanne
K14 Cup Quarterfinal: 2-Tamarindia over 7-Wadomia

The Cup should be contested by eight very good teams. Darmen should have an upper edge against Cassadaigua, while the Delaclava vs. ABK matchup looks like one to watch. ASMV versus Wolfmanne should be a competitive game, at least for the first half, and the Tamarindia versus Wadomia game looks to be no contest.

K15 Shield Semifinal: Solra defeated by Garon-Averia
K16 Shield Semifinal: Mossulia over Mytannion

Solra's playoff run will end here, as Garon-Averia should be able to defeat them. The Mossulian-Mytannion match looks to be a very exciting game, but Mossulia should be able to get the win.

K17 Bowl Semifinal: Civil Citizenry over Chuckio
K18 Bowl Semifinal: Carmadin over Vettera

Civil Citizenry will be the superior team against Chuckio, while Carmadin versus Vettera looks to be a very good match.

K19 Plate Semifinal: Thatius over Armorgames
K20 Plate Semifinal: The Babbage Islands over Beldonia

Thatius should have what it takes to defeat Armorgames, while TBI will again avenge their poor pool play against Beldonia.

K21 Cup Semifinal: Darmen over Delaclava
K22 Cup Semifinal: Tamarindia over Andossa Se Mitrin Vega

Darmen versus Delaclava looks to be a very good match, as does Tamarindia versus ASMV. Darmen and Tamarindia should be the superior teams.

K23 Shield Final: Mossulia over Garon-Averia

The game will be no contest, as the players from Garon-Averia will be tired from their extra game. Mossulia wins.

K24 Bowl Final: Civil Citizenry over Carmadin

This could also become another Rushmori-Babbage rivalry. Civil Citizenry should have the superior team though, as they show why they are one of the top Rushmori teams.

K25 Plate Final: The Babbage Islands over Thatius

Thatius is a team to watch, and we expect them to contend for the Cup in the future. But for now, the experience of The Babbage Islands should give TBI an upper edge against Thatius.

K26 Cup Final: Darmen over Tamarindia

And the title will come down to two darn good teams. Darmen won Mcleod Cup IV, while Tamarindia won Mcleod Cup V, so these two teams know what it's like to be in the title game. Darmen's superb running game should give them an advantage, but it'll be very close, our predicted final score is;
Darmen 34, Tamarindia 31

WYE (BPA) -- Babbage Football International senior press secretary Reginald Hancock has taken early retirement on the eve of Mcleod Cup VI, under pressure from the BFI board.

Sources close to the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggest that substandard international communication on Mr. Hancock's part was the principal concern. An example cited by more than one source was the featured release in DBRF NEWS, where the authors apparently never heard that the Bumblebees won the last Mcleod Cup by a 29-25 score. This was interpreted to mean that our press and promotional agencies have not adequately presented the game to an international audience serious enough to field a top-five national side.

Mr. Hancock's assistant, Catherine Cameron, was quickly confirmed as his successor.

Tony Fantana, DBRF News Senior Editor, read over the newest edition of the DBRF News. He was happy with his writers work, they had done a good job. He began to read the Mcleod Cup VI Predictions article. He soon noticed a major mistake:

...while Tamarindia won Mcleod Cup V...

He turned to one of the junior editors and yelled, "Damn it John, don't you ever read? The Babbage Islands won last year against Tamarindia. What the hell were you thinking? Did you know you cost Reginald Hancock his job?"

John was stunned, "Who's Reginald Hancock?"

Fantana stormed away, furious, " You're fired John, you don't know a damn thing about Babbage Rules! You got one hour to get your shit together and leave."

Spitfyred1 has a strong sporting tradition that they hope can be converted into a stronger performance in their second Mcleod Cup. As Babbage Rules is a developing sport in Spitfyred1 many of the competitors play overseas or were convinced to join Spitfyred1 with a hefty... thank-you package. The team expects to get second in their qualifying group.

Offense - The team uses a derivitive of the American football "veer" formation, with two halfbacks behind the quarterback on either side. The team is balanced between passing and rushing. They have two new starters.

Chris Stone (Centre) - Chris is a converted American Football player. A hulking man to disguise the offense, he also has a stand-up comedy show.
Jane Zee (Quarterback) - Jane is a fast young lady and an ex orangeback. Last McLeod Cup she was a back-up. Definitely a dual-threat.
Suga Sweets (Halfback) - Suga is a great runner who is adept at finding running lanes. As a reciever she prefers screen passes.
Candi Sweets (Halfback) - Candi is Suga's identical twin. Candi is better as a reciever, utilizing her speed. She is a decent runner.
Elliot Missy (Screen/Fly - Elliot is a screen but is turning into a deep threat as well. He was a back-up last cup.
Jacob Fox (Deep/Slant) - Jacob is the brute reciever of the team, getting most receptions. He isn't flashy but has good hands.

Defense - the Fyreballz defense is very basic dependent on man (or woman) coverage. The team remains unchanged.

Karl Marks (Rusher) - Karl is a tall man who tries to prevent the quarter back from seeing his or her reciever by wildly flailing his hands.
Jen Apple (Corner) - Jen is a quick lady who can keep with most of the fastest player. She covers the opponents fastest player.
Simone Sunshine (Corner) - Simone is a decent defender who stays mostly on the inside of the field.
Dove Partridge (Corner) - Dove is a ex-reciever with great hands. Her niche is interceptions and she mostly covers wings.
Pete Worst (Corner) - Pete is used to being overlooked, but is decent. He is used to covering the backs.
Creon Oedipus (Safety) - Creon is not very quick, but from his vantage point quite adept at his position.

Bench- The offensive back-ups are all-new.

Charlie Browne (offense) - Charlie is a young woman who is working on recieving she has potential but little experience.
Brian Brain (offense) - Brian was a running quarterback in American Football but now is a quarterback/reciever for babbage rules.
Boots Nails (Defense) - Boots is a very masculine woman. She is tough and plays as a charger.
"Pops" O'Hanahan (Defense) - Pops is the old wise guy who plays little but coaches a lot. He can play but prefers to stand around shouting at the players.

RP Permissions, anything but Major injury/Death
