Much ado about nothing as far as I'm concerned. Elo rankings are interesting to look at and to discuss as we have, but at the end of the day, they mean nothing in regards to actual World Bowl rankings.

The Babbage Islands wrote:Curiosity takes hold here. How do you calculate an "expected score" for gridiron? And do you run a risk of making winning irrelevant? A focus on points scored, relative or absolute, seems oddly placed. Points are a means to an end. The desired end is the win.

My understanding is that the component being discussed is actually "expected result," which fluctuates between 0 (for "expected to lose 100% of the time") to 1 (for "expected to win 100% of the time"). Normally, the way the expected result is a calculated is as a function of the opponent's ranks. The one with a higher rank will naturally have an expected result closer to 1. The actual result of the game is 0, 1/2, or 1 regardless of the sport being contested.

The difference between the expected result and actual result for each team is used to calculate the baseline change of a their ELO rank. From this, a strong team gains few points from beating a weak team, whereas a weak team gains a lot by getting an upset. I believe ELOs are zero sum, so the points gained in a match by one team are lost by the other. Wikipedia has the exact formulas, but this is the basic result of the math.

Margin of victory, weights for tournament importance, and other factors may be used to add weight to the number calculated in the previous step. For the World Football ELOs, for example, World Cup matches carry a weight of 60 and friendlies carry a weight of 20, IIRC, and if you win by a goal that's worth a 1.5x boost, by two goals it's slightly larger, and so on.

Don't expect me to be able to do rankings. I'm in Central Texas, on my way to Phoenix to deliver 18 tons of awning cloth. Hence why I said before WB-9 that someone was going to have to take over ranking and filing.

Hmm... it's been a month since the last one ended, so a good target for signups might be once World Cup quals are half over. Then two-three weeks of signups and host bids will follow, so that we ought to be ready to kick it off roughly when the World Cup ends. Does that sound good to people?

Think about the numbers in terms that we can relate to. Remove eight zeros from the numbers and pretend it is the household budget for the fictitious Jones family:
-Total annual income for the Jones family: $21,700
-Amount of money the Jones family spent: $38,200
-Amount of new debt added to the credit card: $16,500
-Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710

-Amount cut from the budget: $385

Although I guess we do need somebody to take over the rankings from Arroza. I think there was an explanation of how they work somewhere in this thread, but I could be wrong.

I can rebuild the spreadsheet and pick up the Arroza rankings. It's not the best week for it, at least until the Handball World Cup is stable. But I'm willing. (Note that Arroza's last published spreadsheet does not appear to be available from the posted links.)

That's all right; as long as we have the method and can reconstruct it sometime in the next month, I'm sure we'll be fine.

Starting after World Cup 50 is done, or thereabouts seems to make sense.

I am not going to bid to host World Bowl 10. I say this because I had said during WB9 then I would.
I'm a little burnt out from hosting, and will be more by the end of WBC 14.

If I could figure out the scorinating thingy I could host the BoI, and act as a neutral venue (since I participated in the previous one, and won it).

I know I can't participate in it, so I'd be perfectly neutral

I think hosting the WCoH, however error prone it may have proved, has temporarily given me the hosting bug, so I'm considering bidding to host the World Bowl. I mention this mainly because if anyone wished to co-host, I'd be interested.
