Yes. It's a function of the Arroza formula which is distorted by very short group stages.

Basically, a group stage yields a result from 0-10 based on winning percentage, with 0 for a team who lost all and 10 for a team who won all. To this is added 1 for quarterfinalists, 2 for fourth place, 3 for third, 4 for second or 5 for first.

A further multiplier is applied based on age of result (x 0.5 for one event removed, x 0.25 for two events removed), and a BoI result carries one-tenth the weight of a WB result.

Tazzioli won all their group stage games (10), you won two-out-of-three (6.67). They finished third (+3) and you second (+4). That's 13 vs 10.67, divided by 10 since it's a BoI.

I would agree that the winner of BoI ought to get the biggest ranking boost. I mean, when the Giants won the 2007-8 Super Bowl, no one said that the Patriots were ranked higher just because they were 18*-1 whereas the Giants 'only' were 14-6. Winning the big game in a tournament counts more than winning a few group stage games. Same would have to apply to World Bowl itself.

But seriously, this would be a good discussion to have in the offseason. I wouldn't say a major overhaul, since the group stage isn't worthless, but some amount of change.

I agree. I think it's ridiculous that group stage matches matter enough to push a team that finishes fourth ahead of a team that wins a bloody tournament.

This statement bears repeating. This has happened because of the short group stage. And we're talking 0.13 points here; one two-sentence RP will get that.
ASMV won the title, and that is the important thing. This hardly calls for a drastic or minor way of changing things. It's not as is Tazzioli went 0-3.

Using the Giants-Pats comparison someone mentioned; yes, the Giants won the Super Bowl. They were the champions. If a computer spat out rankings afterwards, most formulas would still have the Pats over them. That doesn't mean the Pats are the champions, it's just the way mathematics work when we have computer-generated rankings systems.

It's worth noting that second-place TBI outpointed champions Tocrowkia by 14.00 to 13.75 for World Bowl IX as well. I like administering the Arroza formula, it's straightforward. But after this WB is in the books I will propose a minor adjustment to the tourney phase scores to give the knockouts slightly more weight against the group stage.
