I don't have problems with new players who are trying to learn the ways of this game. I certainly couldn't care less about someone's age, and I don't think it's a sign of inherent maturity or immaturity. I have my moments when I act like a little bitch and I'm 36 years old.

However, if someone demonstrates an inability or an unwillingness to take advice or actually learn the mores of this game (or of any group they try to join), I have significantly less patience.

If Filbertiana makes an effort to become a constructive member of the NS sporting community, I'll welcome his potential contributions. However, if he continues to showcase a pattern of not trying to learn the lay of the land or the rules that we've learned over RL years of running these competitions have generally worked, I'll be a bit more reluctant to accept him into the community.

It's not an age thing. It's not an English thing. It's a socialisation thing.

And he's hardly a newbie, having registered almost 700 posts - yes, most have been spam, but still... However, isn't it okay to be hard on n00bs?

Not when you're going out of your way to be jerks to a kid who's just exited about the game, doesn't always understand due to a language barrier (English not being his native tongue), and who's had people yelling at him more than saying anything actually USEFUL so perhaps he could, you know, learn how all these things work? Expecting someone to jump into any of the longstanding 'traditions' on NS is quite frankly, ridiculous. And far too many players seem to enjoy going around lording it over others that they've been here longer, know more, and are in their mind, 'better qualified' to participate.

Perhaps if you change how you handle some of the new kids, maybe even some of your attitudes (addressing players in general here), you might just get something good out of it in the end.

Nothing gives you or anyone else the right to act like an ass to another player, especially if they're relatively new. Just makes you look like a complete cockmunch at the end of the day.

Yeah but you seem older. You write with an air of maturity, authority and sophistication in comparison to, say, Krytenia or Sarzonia.

I'm 25, by the way. Just old enough to be able to look back at early RPs and shudder with embarrassment at my immaturity. If I ever use the word 'dude' in an RP again, or substitute the phrase 'I am going to' with 'imana', then I swear I'll have to kill myself.

When I started on the forums, I never ran into to problems. Why not? It wasn't because I spoke fluent English. It was because I paid attention to what everyone else was saying when I asked for help, I joined pre-established events to get a feel for things, and I tried to make every post constructive, even if at times I screwed up. The thing is, with Filbert's top 100, several people told him politely that what he did wasn't the way to go about things. But he didn't listen. So I think it's fair to jump on him slightly.

Oh, and by the way, I'm only 14 years old. Dread Lady, don't drag age into this. It's irrelevant.

And in spite of your claims, I'm not so sure you've had a perfectly spotless record either so ... lets not start tossing stones when we're all pretty much living in glass houses. I would suggest your lack of patience and willingness to jump too quickly on someone rather than perhaps assisting are very age-related - having a young teenager of my own here at home, and being rather infinitely familiar with the tendencies.

Nevermind all the years of rp'ing on here with people both younger and older than yourself.

I'm still not sure how much Filbert gets things. Having spoken in tg and such, I almost get the feeling he's running posts through some free translation site, and getting things more than a little garbled in the process. I think the kid means well, but is overenthusiastic, trying too hard in too many places to keep track of what he's doing, and doesn't have a real grasp of what is and isn't considered 'acceptable' on the forums in general. Unfortunately, if he doesn't either get some serious mentoring, or figure it out, his continued misunderstandings and inability to either understand or parse instructions correctly is gonna bite him in the backside.

It would however help no doubt if some of you would cut out the harassment both on the forums, and via tg's. That, in case you'd forgotten, is rather against the rules. And it sucks to boot, making you no better than a common bully.

Hope y'all get this sorted and have fun with the sportings. I've perused dozens of times, but never had the patience to participate, nevermind the fact that with the whole Italian influence my nation ought to be sporting things up to some degree. >_>
