The scene was Iles-d'Elisabeth, Cotdelapoms - the Centre Valaire was rocking, noise permeating every particle of space. Pryzemyzr Tujenhev was the game-changer, the maestro, the centrepiece of the Mytanar squad. Tujenhev scored 10 goals in six games, also making five assists. Tujenhev averaged 2.5 points per game. He was accompanied by his friend, Marcin Bakunin. Bakunin also had a superb tournament, scored 3 goals in five games - but totting up six assists. Bakunin averaged 1.8 points per game. These two contributed to the shock win of the WJHC for the Mytanar squad, these two plus a lot of the last squad are gone...

It is time for new blood.

Yes, anyway - this is a special edition of the Mytannion Gazette, as we introduce this years' squad to the public. We're also proud to be the first to tell the world that Mytannion now has its' own domestic hockey league. The Torsky Cup, named after Mytanar legend, Leonid Torsky who played for some of the best ice hockey teams in the world in the 1920's and 1930's is starting up. There are 16 teams competing for one coveted title. There is a team for each region and they are based in a city in their region, obviously. However, this is a new set-up as in all other Mytanar leagues, it is team/club based - this is fighting for the region you call home! Or not in some cases... As players can play for any region at all, which kind of defeats the object of this type of league - but we don't care - we have an ice-hockey league!

Yeah, I'm pretty excited over that... But so are a lot of people, the inaugration of the Torsky Cup has meant that local rinks have had a lot of success recently and generated a lot of revenue. Junior teams are actually the most popular at the moment, and are watched more than any other sport currently (apart from football [soccer]). This has meant a lot of good, young players are now on the way through in our nation. When the Torsky Cup does start, it sure does look like it will have a very successful future.

Anyway, I'll get on with the new team now.

The full roster:
(number, name, age, school/local team, height - brackets indicate normal line and then the powerplay line, although powerplay is only done for forwards)

Goaltenders
#1 - Christian Daecher - 16 - Baines High - 5'9"
#7 - Gudbjartur Johannesson - 15 - Gannon IH - 5'6"

Defensemen
#2 - Krystian Dudek - 16 - Carrickfinn HC - 5'11" (Line 1)
#3 - Iivari Hard - 16 - Poulton HC - 6' (Line 1)
#8 - Sanzhis Olayzhinsh - 16 - Litala IH - 5'10" (Line 2)
#9 - Kris Gordy - 15 - Left Fork HC - 5'6" (Line 2)
#13 - Martin Rezek - 14 - Portland High - 5'7" (Line 3)
#14 - Miroslav Melichar - 14 - Ontario HC - 5'6" (Line 3)

Forwards
#4 - Ilya Saiyfulemindirov - 16 - Astern Pont IH - 6'1" (Line 1) (PP1)
#5 - Aksel Gundersen - 16 - East Toranj High - 5'8" (Line 1) (PP1)
#6 - Jaroslaw Marha - 16 - Baines High - 5'9" (Line 1) (PP2)
#10 - James Hamilton - 15 - Montgomery School - 5'6" (Line 2)
#11 - Hazir Turinski - 15 - Versailla High - 5'7" (Line 2) (PP2)
#12 - Yrjo Mikkola - 14 - Stratenberg High - 5'5" (Line 2)
#15 - Miroslav Brezina - 14 - Staining High - 5'5" (Line 3) (PP2)
#16 - Jan Fiala - 14 - Zenit Toranj IH - 5'4" (Line 3)
#17 - Jiri Trvik - 14 - Forvik IH - 5'6" (Line 3) (PP1)

The top prospects on this team look like the returning Ilya Saiyfulemindirov, who was in the squad for the first-ever WJHC and his line-mate, Aksel Gundersen. The two have looked very good together in training and could send this team to another title in the WJHC. Three younger forwards, Brezina, Fiala and Trvik all look dangerous and are all on the same line - the three are good, but they are young and this inexperience could cause them problems. Hazir Turinski is the one to look to for when the team is in need of pace and quick creativity, he is a player who is built in the Pryzemyzr Tujenhev mould but isn't as inspirational as him and nowhere near as skilful - he is quick, has average stick-handling, but gets away from defenders and has good shooting.

The defense isn't as good as last times, however - there is still some talent there. Iivari Hard is brilliant at intercepting passes, and is very strong. When he hits you, you think it might be something twenty times as big. He is the tallest defender on the team and he makes sure people know it. Sanzhis Olayzhinsh has a name that is horrible to pronounce - but his play is anything but horrible - he has to be one of the most elegant defenders there is, his tackling doesn't touch the man, he just steals the puck without the player knowing anything about it. This may be called a bad thing but y'know, he's a sexy player of hockey. Martin Rezek, looks like the future of Mytanar ice-hockey, and will probably figure a bit in this WJHC. He plays hard and does get a lot of penalties called on him, but this will probably change as he gets older.

Two new goaltenders for the team, Daecher will start and probably be first-choice. So we won't have the 'problem' that we had last time, where we couldn't decide which 'keeper to use. Johannesson will figure at some point, as he'll be too old for the next tournament (well, too old in Mytanar terms - and old normally is quite young - Junior means under-17). Daecher plays the 'butterfly' style and is a little eccentric in the fact he goes after forwards.

Now you've met the team, you meet our opponents. Actually scratch that, none of them have a particularly good hockey history. They are; Akkilles, Colmark and Rustika - we'll be playing all of our games in the Nicelce Rink in Onulei, which is in the centre of Civil Citizenry, right next to a nice big lake. This is the second team in a very recent time-period that has had to travel their actually, as our beach soccer team has had to do the same - but they're playing in Ba'natu. We fully expect to get the full 18 points from this group. Our friends in Cotdelapoms have a very much tougher group than our own, they have to play the hosts (Civil Citizenry if you haven't been following), Bergnovinaia and Delaclava. Delaclava are pretty good at hockey, although Bergnovinaia are a bit of an unknown package - although we do know they're good at tennis.

We think we can do well, but we'll have to wait and see.

More information will be filled in later.

First Line:
LW- Louis Periard (Tracy Alouettes)
C- Jean-Luc Barr (Beauport Clippers)
RW- Leif Proulx (Saint-Richard Rockets)

The first line is built around the exciting Jean-Luc Barr, now 17 and about to be eligible for the draft under the current CHL rules. Barr was a slight disappointment in the last tournament, but Benoît Cohen's good campaign couldn't have existed without him. Proulx is a hard hitter, and Periard is very fast, this is a good variety of players, and will be called upon to do the bulk of the work.

Second Line:
LW- Pascal Tremblay (Laval Voisins)
C- Sandro Antonetti (Montréal Wanderers)
RW- Gord Berman (Credit River Warriors)

This line is going to be called upon to score a lot as well, Sandro Antonetti has been lighting it up for the Wanderers, which is making the Montréal Cotdelapomais feel smart about taking the local kid in the draft. Tremblay is older and will be called upon for his leadership, and also his excellent hands. Berman is a no-nonsense player who can do everything well but nothing exceptionally.

Third Line:
LW- Marc-Antoine Parent (Beauport Clippers)
C- Julian Windham (Chillicothe Jackalopes)
RW- Marcel Picard (Montréal Wanderers)

Parent, Barr's teammate in club juniors, is perhaps the wildcard of the team. He is very streaky, occasionally going on long goal scoring streaks (he scored 12 goals during a 10 game span in the middle of the season), but is also historically moody, perhaps at always being upstaged. Picard has a bit of a reputation for being unwilling to go into the corners and fight for pucks, but Julian Windham provides some toughness.

Fourth Line:
LW- Brendan Burnaby (Bright Point Chanticleers)
C- Ian Leblanc (Hiverville Harfangs)
RW- Serge Noël (Mineau-Ouest Ours Polaires)

This is the energy line, all three of these guys have excellent motors and high compete levels.

First Pairing:
D- Antoine Foster (River View Warriors)
D- François Dion (Beauport Clippers)

Dion is going to be a star in the pros, he can do everything. Foster is an excellent power play quarterback, as he has a huge shot.

Second Pairing:
D- Matteo De Lisi (Cambridge Kodiaks)
D- Claude Myers (Cambridge Kodiaks)

These two work well together in club juniors and will be paired together again. De Lisi hits, and Myers is known for good positioning.

Third Pairing:
D- Ben Strathmore (Wilmington Lampreys)
D- Rezzi Tzar'kr'El (Cormier Bucherons)

Ben Strathmore loves a good scrap, and may be called upon to step in if other teams take advantage of some of Cotdelapoms' smaller players. Rezzi Tzar'kr'El is a hotshot prospect who is now 17 and has a cannon for a slapshot but frequently finds himself playing way too far forward, and has a bit of a reputation as a showboat.

Goaltenders:
G- Jens Froberg (Albionpool Oakies)
G- José Thibodeau (Outremont Auteurs)

These are both excellent goaltenders, Froberg will get most of the starts- very tall and agile, with no real weakness other than lack of experience.

Choose my goalscorers: Y
Godmod scoring events: Y
RP injuries to my players: Y
Godmod injuries to my players: Y
Hand out penalties to my players: Y, Ben Strathmore fights.
Godmod other events: Y

Barr Off To Strong Start, But Baby Apples Fizzle

Cotdelapoms' opening matchup in the WJHC against Civil Citizenry will almost certainly be the peak for crowd excitement in this tournament- the Apple Battalion representing far and away the largest group of traveling fans, the Civil Citizenry home crowd obviously fairly into hosting this tournament. That the game provided them both something to cheer for made it even more riveting. The two sides ended the matchup in a 2-2 draw, which disappointed both sets of fans, although it did provide the Cotdelapomais some joy in seeing two goals from its' poster-boy, Jean-Luc Barr.

Should it continue in its' current form, Jean-Luc Barr is expected to almost certainly be the number one choice in the upcoming CHL Draft. The Beauport Clippers' star's first three seasons in the LHJMM are among the best anyone has ever had, and Barr is expected to perform right away for whomever is lucky enough to select him, eschewing future seasons of junior or minor play. However, in the last World Junior Championship, Barr's contribution to the team paled in comparison to then linemate Benoît Cohen, who was the #1 selection in the last CHL draft and one of a small number of players from that team playing pro now. Cohen far outscored Barr, although many said that it was the attention Barr received and his excellent passes that created Cohen's contribution, and so far Cohen has been a bit of a bust in the CHL, or at least as much as any 19 year old can be.

Barr's first goal was largely due to the hard work by linemate Leif Proulx, whose forechecking and hard hit dispossessed Iranaj Dallaguk, and Barr had an open look in front of the net he buried after Proulx's pass hit him right on the tape. Barr's second goal, however, is an absolute stunner- a pass from Louis Periard set up a one-timer that CC goaltender Qapornet Machim stonewalled, but the rebound went up and Barr hit it like a tennis volley into the net. The referee wanted the tape reviewed, but Barr clearly did not use a high stick, so the goal was allowed.

In between the two goals, however, were a pair from Civil Citizenry, putting Cotdelapoms' behind, an unusual position for this team- who lost only once in the previous tournament- the final vs. Mytannion. This quieted the riotous Cotdelapomais fans, who brought drums and other noisemakers into Stadium-de-V'hai and generally made themselves known. Much of the blame for the two goals has been heaped onto Rezzi Tzar'kr'El, perhaps unfairly- Tzar'kr'El's general positioning is not always great, but neither goal had much to do with him, despite his presence on the ice. On the first, Ben Strathmore simply lost track of Ranasooso Pexicallor, who cut in and scored, and the second was a powerful slap shot from the point by Atingya Farchentin that couldn't have been stopped.

The Baby Apples are confident they will still be able to win the group after this small roadblock. They next will be taking on Bergnovinaia, who looked lifeless in their first game, a 0-0 tie with Delaclava. The defending champions, our neighbours Mytannion, started the tournament off with a disappointing 1-1 tie with Akkilles themselves.

Mangolana Gazzette
Mangolana Brawls to win

Mangolana began their WJHC title run today with a 3-1 win over group rival Meguroko, in a game that contained many fights and penaltys towards both teams including both starting goaltenders recieving fighting majors and game misconducts. The game began with two fights in 7 seconds, and both wins going to the Mangolana bad boys, Bordeleau and Shepard. Late in the first period is when the main fight occured. It was a line brawl that resulted in both goalies being tossed from the game and giving Meguroko a power play opertunity. It took less than 31 seconds for Meguroko to cash in on the oppertunity. The goal came when a slap shot from the point by Raj Cooper was tipped in past the glove of back-up goalie, Bobby Goephert to give Meguroko a 1-0 lead.

The next goal would come early in the third period when Mangolana caught Meguroko on a line change, with Buckley getting an outlet pass to Berg on a breakaway, where he is money, changing the score to 1-1. With 5 minutes left in the game, Mangolana was given a golden oppertunity on the power play. The goal quickly came when Berg fired a shot from the point, and the shot was deflected off the goaltenders glove to give Mangolana a 2-1 lead. The final goal would come on a empty netter from Bobby Raymond to give Mangolana a 3-1 lead and the final score.

The game was an good game played by Mangolana and was a fan favorite due to all the fights, and the next game will likely be the same in all aspects, and hopefully will end in the same result

MEGUROKO HOCKEY NEWS

This was not expected. After a 3-1 loss to Mangolana, Meguroko and Mangolana were highly favoured to beat there next opponets, Atlanza and Bidderskinlandia. Mangolana lost the game and the group lead with a 2-0 loss, whille Meguroko managed to get a point out of their game. Atlanza scored a goal early in the first, but Grogery Golon passed it off the boards to Raj Cooper who got his second off the tournament late in the 3rd. Next for Meguroko is Bidderskinlandia, and it should be a tough match. Meguroko must win this game.

Bidderskinlandia on a Roll; Defeats Atlanza, Mangolana

Two days into their first international competition, the players of the Bidderskinlandia National Junior Hockey Team are already ecstatic.

"I'm really exited about our chances now." said winger Gordon Buckley. And he has a right to be exited, as Bidderskinlandia now leads Group One with six points. However, the emotions were quite different Sunday. Going into Bidderskinlandia's first ever national sporting event, the team could be forgiven for being a little nervous. Their nerves showed in the game against Atlanza when they allowed an early goal in the first period. A miss-communication on the first shift change of the night gifted a two-on-one opportunity to Atlanza, and Atlanza made them pay with a goal only two minutes into the game.

However, the young team rallied around Captain Kirk Dane and some very disciplined defensive work to claw their way back into the game. Their efforts culminated when Len Thomson deflected a shot by Stan Everton into the back of the net to tie the score five minutes before the end of the first period. Atlanza would strike back in the second period, with a beautifully executed powerplay that ended with goalie Alistair Manning fishing a puck out of his net. But once again Bidderskinlandia managed to level the score; this time off of a Henry Hrolgar one-timer midway through the second.

For the rest of the second, and into the third, both teams were tense and conservative. Bidderskinlandia finally broke the ice seven minutes into the third when Kirk Dane stole a pass and took it all the way to the crease before putting it between the goaltender's legs. The final thirteen minutes of the game were marked by an increasingly desperate Atlanza side. As the time ticked away, they pushed harder and harder, but were foiled again and again by the brilliance of Alistair Manning. Twice Manning had to slide all the way across is crease in order to deny an equalizer, and at least three times he snatched blazing shots by Atlanza defensemen right of the air with his glove.

With only ninety seconds left in the game, Atlanza decided to pull their goalie, but the move backfired when Xavier Robinson launched a game-clinching empty netter from the neutral zone.

The second international game that Bidderskinlandia has ever played again showcased the brilliance of Alistair Manning. Although Kirk Dane scored two goals, his team only needed half that many as they shut out Mangolana 2-0. Manning was by far the busier goalie in the scoreless first period, facing twelve shots to his counterpart's four. Bidderskinlandia got back into gear in the second, and took lead eight minutes in when Dane flicked the puck into the top corner of the net from two feet out of the crease. Ten minutes later, Bidderskinlandia would double the lead when Gordon Buckley took a bad angle shot that careened off of the pads Mangolana goalie Killer Kowalski and right onto the stick of Kirk Dane, who promptly delivered it to the open net.

The second period ended with a score of 2-0, and with it ended all the goal scoring of the day. While Mangolana did have opportunities, they were immediately denied by either Alistair Manning or a Bidderskinlandia defenseman. By far their best chance came when Brad Zancanaro delivered a pass to Patrick Bordeleau, who had just served his time in the penalty box for a roughing charge, four minutes into the final period. What at first looked like a terrible defensive lapse turned into a fantastic hustle play as Ben Worth skated all the way back from the offensive zone and dove to the ice to knock the puck away just as Bordeleau was going to shoot. After sixteen more minutes of opportunity and denial, the third period ended the same way it began and Bidderskinlandia is now sitting happy on two back-to-back wins.

Colmark have joined all other teams in their group by drawing both of their games thus far in the tournament, creating a truly bizarre situation. In round 1, Colmark ground out a bad tempered, physical 0-0 draw with Rustika, with considerably more fights than chances. With almost the whole game being played with at least one man off the ice, blood had to be cleaned off the ice mid way through the third period so that play could continue safely. Neither side looked particularly in the mood for Ice Hockey, and the brawl sprawled onto the benches at the end of the game.
This game contrasted with a physical but highscoring game against Mytannion. 4-4 was a fair reflection of an end to end, pulsating affair, with neither side really in control for long periods of the game. Peter Walters was on target twice for the Bears, and Albury and Tams put one in each to make sure Colmark were not going to lose.
There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night
Ten to make and the match to win
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play, and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

MEGUROKO HOCKEY NEWS
A tough game was instore for Meguroko last night. They played group leaders Bidderskinlandia, who were undefeated. In the first, Clint Xao scored his first of the tournament that gave Meguroko the lead. Kirk Lane scored late in the second to tie the game at 1. Kirk also got another goal, but it was disallowed as Kirk's stick was above the crossbar. Late in the 3rd, Jean Sebastien Suuois passed to San Sou. San shot and barely missed, but Raj Cooper tipped it home. Most Megurokan fans trust this team to do well in the next 3 games, as this team played with the best in the WCoH and finished 3rd in the group, 1 point out of a qualifing spot, and they also played at the Olympics in Krytenia.

Bidderskinlandia Loses in a Heartbreaker

Buoyed up by their recent victories, the Bidderskinlandia National Junior Hockey team thought that they would not have any problems with then-winless Meguroko. Boy were they wrong. Things took a sour turn right from the start when Meguroko winger Clint Xao tipped the puck past Alistair Manning to put them ahead by one. However, Kirk Dane scored his fourth goal in three games to level the score midway through the second. Later that period, Dane put another puck in the back of the net, but it did not count on the scoreboard. Upon video review, the officials decided to disallow the goal because Dane's stick was above the crossbar. The controversial no-goal would have given Bidderskinlandia the lead, and the momentum going into the final period.

Instead, the third period began with the score tied, and ended in thrilling fashion. With only two minutes left in the game, and a draw imminent, Meguroko forward San Sou fired a shot at the net that deflected off the far post and right onto Raj Cooper's waiting stick. It was simple for him to place it into the wide open net. While Meguroko fans celebrated, Bidderskinlandia could not help but feel dejected as they walked of the ice. However, they are ready to take on their next opponents and prove to the world that their first two wins were more than mere flukes.

Bidderskinlandia Knocks out Atlanza

Bidderskinlandia edged Atlanza 1-0 in a defensive struggle yesterday to eliminate Atlanza. The only goal in the contest came late in the first period off the stick of Kenny Jorgenson. The Bidderskinlandia winger one-timed a perfect pass from defenseman Mart Rose past the Atlanza goalie to put Bidderskinlandia up. The rest of the game showcased the defenses of both teams. With both offenses contained, the game stagnated until the final minutes, when Atlanza's desperate attempts to score were denied by Bidderskinlandia to preserve the victory.

Now the team is looking forward to the next contest against Mangolana. A victory would get them into the knock-out stages of the competition, but Bidderskinlandia coach Harvey Bruce downplayed the significance of the game, telling his players to treat it just like any other game.

Bidderskinlandia Gains Top Berth in Knock-out Round

After handily beating Mangolana 4-0 on Thursday to advance to the knock-out round, you would expect the junior hockey team of Bidderskinlandia to take it easy in their next game. However, the prospect of gaining the top berth in the first ever international sporting event Bidderskinlandia has ever played in (and not to mention avenge their only defeat to date) was too much of a draw for the team as they stepped onto the ice to face Meguroko yesterday.

The game opened with Bidderskinlandia taking control early. They passed the puck well and spent the majority of the first five minutes on the opponent's side of the ice. However, Meguroko goaltender Jean Sebastian Suuios denied all of the shots fired by Bidderskinlandia, and shifted the balance of attack to his side. However, Bidderskinlandia goalie Alistair Manning was equally brilliant on his side, and the first period ended the same way it started with the score 0-0.

Bidderskinlandia came out firing in the second period, and finally broke through seven minutes in when Stan Everton rocketed a slap shot into the top right corner of the net. But Meguroko would level the score ten minutes later when Grogery Golon elevated the puck over Alistair Manning's pad.

Although both teams' fates in the tournament had already been decided the day before, tensions were still high in the Ba'natu Megarink Complex as the third period opened with the score of 1-1. The teams battled to a stalemate until Meguroko defenseman Evry Bodirussian committed a costly high sticking penalty with five minutes left in the game. Bidderskinlandia would make him pay when forward Gordon Buckley tipped it past Jean Sebastian Suuios to put Bidderskinlandia up for good. Meguroko made a final, desperate charge late but it was again denied by the Bidderskinlandia defense, leaving the final score at 2-1.

Now with the number one overall seed in the knock-out stages, the pressure is on Bidderskinlandia to deliever. While they will face Akkilles, the lowest seed making it into the elimination phases, coach Harvey Bruce was still wary.

"Everybody's saying, 'Oh, they're the last seed, they'll be easy' but they are a very good hockey team and we have to be at the top of our game from here on out." he said when asked about his opponents next round.

Bidderskinlandia Shutout in Quarters

After obtaining the number one overall seed in the play-offs, Bidderskinlandia fans were exciting about the team's prospects. However, it was not to be as Bidderskinlandia was shut out 0-3 by Akkilles, delivering the team its first scoreless game ever. The team abandoned the disciplined defense that elevated them to that number one seed as they fell to an early 0-2 deficit in the first period, from which they would never recover.

Alistair Manning, who had been brilliant all tournament long, was shoddy at best. The offense was equally poor, failing to create opportunities and blowing the ones that they did have.

Despite the loss, coach Harvey Bruce is still very pleased with his team's performance.

"We played hard throughout, and while we couldn't bring it home in the end, it was still a great run." The coach said, echoing many sentiments of the populace of Bidderskinlandia as a whole.

I'm terribly sorry for not completing this tournament on schedule. However, given the lack of RPing from the finalists, I think it's safe to scorinate the entire championship series, along with the third place game, tonight. So this is your final RP cutoff of WJHC 2.

Third Place Match
[8] Akkilles 1–2 [3] Civil Citizenry
Congratulations to the third place winners, Civil Citizenry!

Finals - Opening Match
[5] Allamunnic States 3–2 [7] Rustika

Finals - Second Match
[5] Allamunnic States 0–1 [7] Rustika

Finals - Rubber Match
[5] Allamunnic States 0–2 [7] Rustika
Congratulations to the champions of the 2nd World Junior Hockey Championships, Rustika! Commiserations to the finalists, Allamunnic States!

With that, the 2nd World Junior Hockey Championships are over! Thank you very much to everyone who participated, and good luck in future editions.
