Sports Leagues

Welcome to Rushmore! We are the proud home of seventy-eight nations, many of which have strong sporting backgrounds. Some regions have a lot of warfare, some regions are culturally advanced -- Rushmore is good at sports. An initiative has been taken by several eager and growing nations to set up a system of pan-regional sports leagues. These leagues may serve as alternatives to, or substitutes for, domestic leagues. Eight leagues have been organized in American football, association football, baseball, basketball, curling, ice hockey, lacrosse, and rugby. All information for these sports can be found in this post. Rosters, RPing, and results will also be posted in this thread.

Postseason: Playoffs. Regular season top 12 qualify.
RP Bonus: 0-1 per day; ineligible if rank points = 100.
Scorination: 11-12 games every other day for two weeks.

VONGHURST - As per tradition with the VFA, none of us knew exactly why the press corps had been summoned to the "infamous" Wood-Room. Rumours had been circulating that the association was going to once again change the system. I doubted this because the playoffs were perhaps the greatest decision ever made for Virabi Football. Some of the more pessimistic of us even thought that they were going to pull the plug on the state championships after this season.

The thought of that made me a little bit nauseous so, I put it near the back of my mind and focused on other things the upcoming press conference could be about. After a little bit of self-deliberation, I decided to ask the person next to me what he thought. . He responded by saying that he heard some rumours of a "Super Joint League". The thought of this intrigued me but, given the associations previous experience with the South Rushmori Premier Division, I thought that it was rather unlikely that they would ever participate in another foreign league so, I discounted that thought. His foreign accent should have tipped me off that it was something involving other countries, though, as foreign journalists are never present when the topic purely pertains to domestic measures.

Soon enough, after some waiting (accompanied by thought), the hidden doorway opened and the commissioner of the v.league, Marco Sílvas and the head of the VFA, the grizzled Brett Sampson walked out towards the podium, which had recently become a permanent instillation.

As the head of the VFA, Brett was the first to speak. "I hate to sound like a broken radio, but I like to keep things short", Brett said reminding us once again of his disdain for elabourate speeches which are in his opinion 'full of fluff and bs', "But, today, I have the pleasure of being the first to inform you of the creation of the Rushmori Unity League."

The man next to me's suspicion was right. Whether I could believe it or not, the VFA had entered into another multi-national league. As if by instinct, I whipped out my notepad and pen and began to franticly take down notes as Brett continued to speak, "Now, to discuss the details of the league, I'd like to invite my colleague Marco Sílvas to fill you in on the details, I got work to do."

So, almost as quickly as he came out, Brett retreated back to from where he came. Many would think that because of his public behaviour that his age is at long last catching up with him. Granted, in some respects, this is probably true but, for a 90 year old man, he is doing exceptionally well. What has to be noted is that he does alot of stuff behind the scenes and has other people be the figure heads for his work.

Anyway, before I go off on a tangent about Sampson, Sílvas, who took the podium from Sampson began to speak. One could notice the vast differences in how the two spoke.

"What...is....Unity League?", posed Sílvas as a rhetorical question to those in attendance, "You are probably lost at what this could possibly be. The words, so foreign to your ears..."

He continued like this for some time. Each fact was buried under metres of usless fluff. Some go for this type of thing but, truth be told, I hate it. I'd much rather have had Brett give the press conference. It would have been an hour shorter and we would have probably learned the same things. Anyways, the gist of Unity League is that it is envisioned as the spiritual successor to the SRPD but, where the older league was limited in terms of geographic location, Unity League was open to any Rushmori nation which desired to send teams.

So far, only six associations (the principality of Pontinur, Erathore, the Whirl Islands, Civil Citizenry, Cotdelapoms and us) have expressed interest and four of the six have already indicated which clubs will participate in the first season. However, once the states conclude we will know which Virabi clubs will go to the league.

The new league has already been touted as a success for the concept of Pan-Rushmori Sport. Those who are in favour of it have said that it will open the avenue for not only a greater field of competition for the clubs but, it is also promised to open up avenues of economic and political cooperation between participatory nations.

As precedent for this claim, the "SRPD effect" has been cited. What they refer to is that when Virabia took part in the SRPD there was an observable increase in trade between Virabia and Malak and the two countries also entered into some bi-lateral talks on issues confronting what at the time was the southern reaches of inhabited Rushmore. This increased co-operation is something that the Pan-Rushmori government of Leo Rayan and the Dem Socialist majority in the senate.

The league doesn't come with out much contreversey though. Since it will take the place of the v.league as the nation's top league, the v.league will once again become the second flight of football. While it will keep the same format as it did this year, many, including myself, have thought that the introduction of the Unity League will stunt some of the positive growth that the v.league has seen with the introduction of the playoff system, which as I've said earlier, will keep the playoffs. They will just no longer be for the national title and thus the intensity of the play will drop. The fact that seven of the leagues best teams will also be absent from this adds only insult to injury.

Still, some with the opposing viewpoint point to the tremendous growth seen upon the introduction of the SRPD as indication that the Unity League may instead bolster Virabi football. To a degree, this is true but, to think that way would be to overlook the major reason that football exploded and that was the free games that featured the national team in World Cup 51. Even then, it only took the sport out of the shadows and into the mainstream.

Being fair to the other side, though, they do have a point that increased play against foreign sides will see an increase in the skill level by for teams in Unity League.

This is a double edged sword. While the seven clubs in Unity League may improve, the rest of the nations clubs may not necessicarily do so. This is a phenomena we have already seen but, the Unity League could make it worse. A gap could start to emerge where the top ten or so clubs play to a much higher level than any other club and because they are consistently in Unity League, they will also earn higher profits, which they can use to bring in the top players. If this were to happen, the gap between teams would grow even larger, to the point where only a select handful of clubs have a chance and the others are fodder.

Like I said, this can be observed somewhat nowadays but, overall it isn't that bad.

To combat this from possibly happening, a coalition of fans and some clubs have already petitioned the VFA to institute a wealth sharing initiative amongst all of the clubs. There has been no word from the association on what they will do about this but, in the coming days we will expect to hear more about this.

So as this, Unity League and any other news develops. You can be sure that we will keep you posted.

Unity League Inaugural Edition

It's been a long time in the making but, at long last, Unity League has gone from concept to reality. Fourty Two teams from six different nations (a record for any multi-national league) will contest the cup which, at the end of the season wil be dolled out to which ever team sits on top of fourtyone others.

Format
The fourty two clubs will play a double round robin schedule of 82 games, averaging about three to four games a week. This will result in a five month season which will last from the cold month of January to May. Keep in mind that this is IC. OOCly, it will be around two weeks. With roughly 11-12 matches scorinated at a time. Scorination will be every other day, to allow time for RP.

RP Bonus

Yes, while this is a domestic league and RP is not done to the degree that it is done in competitions like the World Cup, I'd still love to see some RP. That's why the third component of rank will be role play. Granted it will be small, with only one point dished out each scorination day but, it could still assist in making your fifth place team get into the top three. Note: RP bonus will have no effect on clubs rated 100. 100 is the ceiling, nothing can be above that.

Tiebreakers
Tiebreakers used will be the same as what I used for the Cup of Harmony. Points will be first, followed by goal differential, H2H result, and H2H goal differential, wins, and if the tie still cannot be broken, a one game playoff.

Well, the first season of the MCUL went without a hitch near enough - but the second season hasn't started yet and supporters, teams and players are all getting quite worried. However, the MCUL Board, know what they're doing and they are preparing to open up the opportunity for teams from other nations across Rushmore to enter teams into the MCUL. Currently, teams are only from Mytannion and Cotdelapoms - and while both are relatively successful in the sport of lacrosse (Mytannion have won one World Lacrosse Championship and have finished third in another, whilst Cotdelapoms are always there, or thereabouts), the domestic teams need to play to a wider audience. Milo Tyrella is an international star, Maxym Okachachev likewise - these players are good, but now need to widen the sports boundaries and play in foreign nations.

Nations across the region of Rushmore are welcome to enter their teams into the newly organized league - the structure of which has not been entirely decided upon as of yet. Nations will be welcome to enter upto five teams each and the two founding nations, Mytannion and Cotdelapoms will keep their seven teams each and the history of the league will stay the same. The number of entrants expected is rumoured to be around thirty teams. Although the structure hasn't been finalized - the MCUL Board (the league is going to be renamed although a name hasn't been decided upon as of yet), are wanting to split the league into two conferences or four divisions, either would work.

Not much has been decided upon yet, but the sign-ups for entrants into this new league are most definitely open.

Domestic Leagues Go to the Birds

I can't say I was particularly pleased when I got the assignment to cover Yarafungo Celagose's press conference. Celagose is the Minister of Sport's Under-General of Soccer, and he's well-known in the sporting world for his many feeble attempts at cobbling together a national soccer league in Civil Citizenry. It's actually kind of sad, given the immense popularity of soccer around Rushmore and the vast NSverse, that participation in soccer is so low. Plus, it's not the lack of players so much as an inability to raise enough revenue to keep the league afloat.

This was just another of Celagose's pet projects that would never succeed. I could feel it.

It's a short drive from my office in CVCSR headquarters to the Ministry of Sport building. The MoS Conference Room, dubbed the "Walls of Truth", was packed, as it always is for this sort of announcement. (Because what if it somehow does succeed? That's big news.) Jokes fly around the room about how Celagose was dense like cellulose in thinking this league would succeed. Rumors about the league name spread faster than H1N1 at a meat-eating conference.

Then Celagose walked out, asking for quiet. He promptly turned to the large television behind him, and on the screen played a simulcast of a press conference in Virabia. "...inform you of the creation of the Rushmori Unity League." It wasn't a national soccer league after all, but a region-wide soccer league. 42 teams from six nations playing 82 games over a five-month season. Sounds like just what this growing, soccer-less country needs. MOSSO - the federal soccer program, which stands for Ministry of Sport Soccer Organization - finally put effort into a worthwhile project.

Once the simulcast concluded, Celagose turned around - silently. No triumphant smile, no boasting of success. Instead, Minister of Sport Minn Landrea walked through the side curtains and took a seat. He went on to explain the eight-sport system of Rushmore-wide club leagues that were currently being formed. Football, soccer, lacrosse, basketball, hockey, baseball, rugby, and even curling will be played in a pan-Rushmori format.

Best of all, Civil Citizenry is the region-wide seat for basketball. We're not exactly known internationally for our basketball - the national team's only International Basketball Championships appearance resulted in an eighteenth-place finish and an appearance in the finals of the Best of the Rest playoff - but Landrea is set on establishing Civil Citizenry as a player on the multiverse scene. More information is to come on the progress of the Rushmori basketball league.

Say goodbye to the old days of yore, when excited new sport under-generals fixed their eyes on building a successful system of domestic leagues. Wave a fond hello to the glory days that are just beginning in Rushmore, where no club team need lack top competition in any major sport.

Unity League Preview Part I: Virabia

((OOC: This was meant to be done a couple days ago but, I've been tired, so, here goes!))

VONGHURST - The Unity League, perhaps one of the most contreversial and anticipated sporting events to hit the shores of Rushmore in quite some time, is at long las just around the corner. Forty-two clubs from six nations will compete for one shared goal. To, at the end of the season, be above all of the rest. And, before the first day of games even kicks off, (TEAM A v TEAM B ((OOC: This will be filled in later) @ Bayview Arena Kickoff at 5:00 WRST on 1 January AY 17) it will be our pleasure to preview the fourty two teams of Unity League. We will begin first with the seven most on the island should know most intimately. The seven teams that will represent Virabia; starting with...

Portsham City

As defending champions of the v.league, high expectations have been placed upon Portsham City and especially their star goalkeeper Inacayal Mojica who is coming off a career season in the Ita State Championship. Recently, he has been a one man wall which has stopped the ball from finding the back of the net and this service has been invaluable to the club. Still, despite Mojica's strong play in goal, the club as a whole has had a rough season. They have been plagued by injuries to key players such as Walter Barnes and "clutch wizard" Adólf Zázálane, who will both miss the entirety of Unity League. Because of their injury problems, the team has struggled throughout the state championship. Sure, they placed first but, to say that they are truly a first place calibre team in a state like Ita would be a misrepresentation of where they are at right now. Their success at this point hinges too much on Inacayal Mojica performing extremely well in goal and while he certainly can do it some of the time, he (as well as the team) will not be able to sustain the beating that will come their way when they difficulty dial is turned up for Unity League., Thus, I predict them to finish worse than they hope but, considering their circumstances they will consider themselves lucky with even a 15th place finish. Third amonst the Virabi teams.

Laufston Town

Less than a decade ago, Laufston Town was virtually unheard of. Silently, they advanced to the third edition of the South Rushmori Premier Division. It was before this season that I recalled picking them to finish at the dead bottom of the league. Instead, they surprised us all. Not only did they avoid "relegation" but they came in fifth, earning them a Globe Cup spot. Since then, the famously all-amateur team has evolved to become one of the strongest programmes in the country. They are by, no means invincible, though. While they were heavily favoured to win the finals after their league-best regular season, they were upset in the first round by the aging and injury plagued Atalanta BC. While some clubs would be rattled by a loss like this, it had the opposite effect. In the Segycium championship, the team came roaring out of the gate. As the season wore on, though, they slowed down a bit and thus they finished second, only one point behind Silver Coast, who may well become the "next Laufston". Still, with their winning combination of a strong defence combined with a solid midfield and attacking corps all under the watchful eye of manager Tom Hopkins, the team should do very well in Unity League. In the past, I have underestimated them but, this time I hope I am right in saying that I forsee them taking the crown of the inaugural edition of Unity League. For a team like them, it is just meant to be!

Freeville Pioneers

Of the seven teams representing Virabia in the Unity League, the Pioneers are unquestionably amongst the weakest. It is no secret that they owe alot to being in a weaker. In fact, Branataland is one of the easiest states to make it out of. Only one or two teams are ever competitive and the two teams which fail to advance are laughable. Still, this is not to say that Freeville is necessicarily bad. Last season in Division North, they finished fifth in the regular season and even made it to the conference finals where they lost to eventual champions Portsham City. This success, though, has largely been attributed to luck more than anything else. While they do have some strong players in defenders Kim Roberson and Oswald Harvey, the team is still not up to the level of play which I forsee dominating Unity League. While they may fare well against weaker teams, against the best clubs they will come up short and thus I predict them to finish 36th place overall and dead last out of the seven Virabi teams.

West Atalanta Seals

In the beginning, Atalanta was a town dominated by one team; Atalanta BC. The BC were among the top teams in the country and were a force to be reckoned with. However, time caught up with many of their players and now the team has begun to slip off their throne. Quick to replace them has been the West Atalanta Seals, whose young roster and electric style of play has not only captured the attention of audiences but has also served them well in both v.league and the state championships. What really stands out about them, though, is not their style of play but the insistence of the team to forgo the traditional model of having one or two stars and a few more solid role players. Instead, the club employs 23 players which are relatively even in skill. On their own none of them are too impressive but, as a group they play a cohesive, solid game of football. Another thing this grants them is impressive depth. Fatigue and injury, both of which are commonly faced by clubs hardly put a dent in the machine. Given the Unity League's 82 game season, this could serve them quite well. As other teams begin to flame out, the Seals will still be going strong. Their greatest strength could still become their greatest weakness though. Their lack of any star power may hurt their chances against teams in the upper most echelons. They will simply be too much to handle and because of this I must unfortunately pick them to finish 29th place and fifth amongst the Virabi teams. Don't be surprised if they do better than this, though.

Breckridge Nuggets

Like the Pioneers, the Nuggets also benefit from being in a weaker state. In most other states they would be only be an average team but, because they are in Mountingshire (which is not known for being a football powerhouse) they can continue to make it further than they otherwise would. Another similarity between them and the Pioneers is that both teams have a knack for over performing. The Nuggets no doubt turned a few heads when they ended up with the third best regular season record in Division North. Unfortunately for them, the parallels do not stop there. Like the Pioneers, I feel that the Nuggets are just not a strong enough team for Unity League and that when all is said and done they will end up in 33rd place, sixth of the Virabi clubs.

Abbotsford Bears

For the longest time, the Abbotsford Bears were a solid Division National team. Each season, they clamoured for the top spaces and were continuously in contention for an SBCC place. Last season, with the introduction of the expanded v.league, the Bears unexpectedly continued their success into the big leagues. Not only did they make the playoffs as the fifth seed AND make it to the second round but, in the second round they gave CD Vonghurst a run for their money as the match was only decided by away goals. So far, this success has carried into this season. In the Eropeos state championships the team has continued performing strongly and as goalkeeper Hal Christie continues to mature the team can only improve. However, a team is more than just one player and the Bears have this down. Players like Don Anderson and Alej Ramos put in strong performances day in and day out. Whie they may not be the ones adorning the posters and the box art for the new hit footballing video game, they are a large part of what make any team and especially this team work. To what level they will rise to in the Unity League, I can not be sure but, I think that given their talent and their drive to always do better they will fight their way into a top five finish and a Globe Cup spot.

East Mountain Bucks

Who would have thought that the two teams from the south of the country that will represent Virabia in the Unity League would be from Eropeos much less that one of those teams would be the ever diligent Bucks. To the casual observer, the Bucks share a lot in common with their Eropos counterpart the Bears. For the most part, manager Pablo Rodríguez tries to implement similar strategies to those used by the Bears. What he doesn't realise is that each club has to find their own way in the world. While he pursues what the Bears have, he often ignores talent sitting right in front of him. For the past few years now, Grant Hicks and Diégo have been amongst the most underutilised players in the entire state championship and they have been very vocal about trying to find a team. The catch is that with out play time to prove themselves not to many teams want them so, their trapped on a team with a manager who is buy chasing a dream of grandure which is just not true. So, it is my prediction that in this edition of the Unity League, the Bucks will finish 25th overall and fourth amongst Virabi teams. However, if their troubles continue, this will likely not be the case as they may well finish even lower.

A beyond capacity crowd of 130,000 packed into every corner of Bayview Arena. Many of them were still inebreiated from the New Year's celebrations which took place only five hours earlier so, they were an unusually noisy bunch. Chants filled the arena and roughly every forty seconds Auld Lang Syne, a traditional song played at new years' or when some sports team wins something, broke out amongst the crowd, most of which were there to witness the start of a new league.

Seizing an advantage of a small pause in the antics of the crowd, the stadium's PA announcer Horace Dix began speaking into his microphone, projecting a deep voice throughout the stadium. He didn't say much but, the words were iconic, "Ladies and Gentlemen. The new era."

After he uttered those words, the crowd came to the silence. Perhaps it was in response to what Horace had said but, it was more likely because the players and officials, who had been waiting in the tunnel were entering on to the pitch. On the top left corner of each of their kits was a small freshly sewn 'Unity League' logo, which seemed to fit right in with the design of both teams' kits.

Following the players and the refs was former v.league and now Unity League commissioner Marco Sílvas. He walked to an imaginary mark right infront of where the players and referees stood in a straight line.

The fans cheered.

"Thank you, thank you", Marco said in response to the cheering crowd, "I know you're here to watch football, so I will keep it quick."

Marco paused and took a breath. While he had been downplaying the significance of this moment he nonetheless wanted to take it in. It's a once in a lifetime event to witness the creation of something so big. "Today, we witness the beginning of a new era of Rushmori football. The best teams from six nations will compete in one league, for one shared prize. IT has been a long time in the making but, just being here today and witnessing the energy in this building is amazing."

At some point during his short speech, five more flags dropped down from the rafters, joining the Virabi flag which had already been hanging there. Not many noticed it but, Marco did. He looked up at the flags for a second and smiled. "So without further ado, the national anthems of the Whirl Islands and Virabia!"

The band which was situated behind one of the goals blared to life with the first bars of the Whirl Islands' national anthem. As a VTV commentator said when the match was about to kick-off "Unity League has kicked off"

Halfway Home!

ANYWHERE UNITY LEAGUE IS - With the completion of the most recent slew of matches, the first season of Unity League is at last, only half way home. For many players, the riggours of the league have been unlike anything they are used to. Even the players with the best endurance are beginning to feel the pain that comes when you play a match against top level competition every few days. For them, the halfway point is comforting in the sense that most of the matches are behind them but, at the same time they still have another forty-one games to go. Forty-one games which, like the first half, will be played in the rapid succession that could only be found in a league organised by Virabia. What most players think of the leagues quasi-torturous schedule was best summed up in an interview with Cosmopolitan star (name) where he remarked, "Who ever thought that this was a good idea is nuts!"

That pain, though, is only really being felt by those on foreign clubs, though. As things stand now, Virabi clubs have been doing much better than expected. Three of which lie in the top ten and an additional two are found in the top twenty. Some part of this is just because of the improved quality of play that we have seen in Virabi clubs across the board this season but, the main reason is because Virabi clubs are used to absurdly long (by international standards) seasons of more than a hundred games with only a month granted off inbetween the forty game regular season and the much longer v.league or Unity League which awaits teams if they do well.

How teams cope with this is not by improving the endurance of the players but, by simply bringing in more players. While most international teams have small twenty-man rosters, no Virabi club that has any hope of playing beyond the state championships would ever be caught dead with less than forty active players on their roster. This is something that Unity League organisers warned clubs about numerous times but, so far, only Virabi teams continue to possess the large rosters. This, has been a huge advantage to Virabi teams who can save their better players for the matches where they need them and as the season progresses into a period of the season known as the newbie ten (so named as clubs often try out younger unproven players so that more established can rest), this advantage will become more evident.

As that happens, and Unity League moves on into the second half of the season, you can be sure that we will keep you posted!
