Qazox' WBC XVIII roster

Postby Qazox » Thu Mar 24, 2011 8:01 am

Rrrrrrrr. Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Rrrrrrrrrrrrrr. What's that sound you ask? That's either the sound of Qazox spinning their metaphorical wheels in place, or they're metaphorically revving their engines for another deep WBC run.

2 years ago, Qazox reached the semifinals of WBC 17, and while they lost to eventuall runner's-up Tarrenum; the Eagles are primed to avenge that loss; should the two teams meet again. The team still might not be a favorite to win the title, but in the WBC, just bout anything is possible.

Players added from Keisler Cup 4 in italics...

(Style modifier: +3)
The DH will never be used in Qazox.

MANAGER: Linda Werth

Starting Lineup (Bats/Throws)

CF- Tyson McGillicutty (R/R): McGillicutty's been moved up to the lead off spot after having a great WBC 17, leading the team in steals and runs scored. Werth thinks he can help counter some of the speed-at-top other have.

LF- Emma Flint (R/R): Flint, who batted .321 during the last WBC, should get a few more runs and RBI's as Werth decided to move her up in the order.

2B- Jayde Sinclair (S/R): Werth decided that having Sinclairbat 3rd instead of 5th would help the team get a few more runs across. Odds are she'll be right.

RF- Carl Holmes (L/L): True Power hitter on team. Average range in right, but decent arm will hold many runners at 3rd. Will be the DH in games involving the DH.

3B- Ashante Omante (R/L): One of just 3 U-21 players that Werth decided to add to the roster, Omante's fielding is suspect, but the bat isn't, as she went .352 in the KC4. Omante's starting primarily because Janet Corell, the WBC-17 third-sacker is pregnant.

C- Davis Sdmar (R/R): Another great catcher in a long line of Qazoxian backstops. Strikes out a bit, but can hit to every field, and has some pop. Has good throw to 2nd, but can be beat by the elite runners.

1B- Daniel Jae (L/L): Unusual as Jae is the opposite of what most team' first-sackers are. Is probably 2nd fastest player on team and hits like a machine to every field. But another light bat that strikes out occasionally.

SS- Arthur Thomas (R/R): Lightning quick, stolen base threat. Great range and fields SS better than 99% of players out there. Drawback is that Arthur is a free-swinger and strikes out frequently.

Pitcher

In Games involving a DH, Jae and Thomas will bat 8th and 9th, with DH batting 4th. In RF, batting 7th and replacing Holmes in the field will be:

RF: Hannah Carre (R/R): Good all around player, has solid stroke to left and center and can hit for power. Doesn't pull ball to right often and strikes out on occasion. Better arm than Holmes, but takes too much time/distance to get ball if it goes past her.

Rotation (pitches/Bats)
#1- Jerri Werth (R/R): No suprise the Coach has her daughter #1. But this is not a case of nepotism. Jerri's fastball's been clocked at 100 mph; has a slider that all but disapears to righties and a circle-change that breaks lefties' wrists.

#2- Michael Hunter (L/L): Unusual pick for a #2. Fastball tops 90 rarely, but has pin-point control. That and two curves, a 11-5 that breaks bats and a side-arm curve that acts like a changeup.

#3- Sean Carey (R/R): Good fastball (94-96), good changeup and a great splitter. Has some control issues and will walk a few batters a game and might hit one or two as well.

#4- Julia Stanton (R/R): As the only U-21 pitcher at the Keisler Cup that didn't get rocked, not to mention Juan Diego's retirement after his injury; Stanton might be the pitcher with the most to prove. She has a good (94-96mph) fastball; a decent sinker and a good hard slider.

NOTE: For the Playoffs, Jerri Werth has been moved into the bullpen as long relief. Hunter will start Game 1's, Carey Game 2's, Stanton Game 3's; unless I note otherwise in an RP.

BENCH:
2B- Sandra Wu
INF- Mike Mazeroni
2B/SS- Janet Berra
3B/1B- Victor Fuller
OF- Yasmine Herrera
OF- Sean Vasa
OF- Carl Issen

BULLPEN
LHP- Charlene Iya
RHP- Randall Wynne
LHP- Issac Greene
RHP- Greg Chambers
Closer (R)- Robert Tokadden

Same Old, Same Old

There's something about Milchama and continuity especially when it comes to rosters. Back in the heyday it was not unusual for the Warriors to have exact same roster for 3 or 4 World Cups and the same was true of WBCs as well. So true to form for the 4th straight World Baseball Classic the Milchama Warriors come back with the exact same roster that we saw in WBC 15. While this team has mostly underperformed internationally MBA head Marcus O'Sheacanyouseeme said, "Why not?" Since that answer seems good enough for all involved here's the roster:

Starters:
C: Henry Thomas (Chi Cubs)
1b: Martin LaPlante (Alexandria Comets)
2b: Forest O'Kelt (New Babylon Pirates)
SS: Dani Eltanor (Tel Morlin Echoes)
3b: James Merter (Port James Raiders)
LF: Itay Hafava (Chi Sox)
CF: Kelsey Evers (Chi Cubs)
RF: Rudyard Davies (Wickert Witches)
DH (if necessary): Ben Aminton (New Sparta Greeks)

Bench:
OF: Riley Hevett (Wickert Wanderers)
OF (when not DHing): Ben Aminton (New Sparta Greeks)
C: Kim Pardew (Alexandria Kings)
IF: Ken Di'are (New Babylon Pirates)
IF: Marlow Hashmet (Kreitsburg Killers)
Util:Ufalay Kokoiam (Mongolt Hordes)
Util: Chester Ofalay (Port James Hitmen)

Pitchers:
SP:Mickey Hermeton (Kreitsburg Killers)- The ace led an undermanned Kreitsburg to the verge of the pennant. His miniscule 1.21 ERA was the best in 23 years in the MBL.
SP: Ezra Foster (Chi Cubs)- The grandson of Phil Foster finally gets to play internationally. Was Rookie of the Year his first year in the league and an even better second season gets him onto the roster as the second starter.
SP: Kevin Waldon (Edo Samurai)- The only good player the atrocious Samurai possess, Waldon has a wicked fastball and an even better curve. His getting on the national team is an accomplishment in itself.
SP: Kit Fenner (Tel Morlin Echoes)- The junkball specialist. Fenner has a subpar fastball but makes up for it by having the largest arsenal of crazy breaking pitches this side of Henson Callahan.

Relivers:
Closer: Eric Fiori (Kreitsburg Killers)- Kreitsburg relied on a strong bullpen to get to second place in the DL and Fiori was a major reason. His miniscule .50 WHIP made him a force to be reckoned with.
Set up man 1: Kent Fernal (Alexandria Comets)- The Comets finally got themselves a closer last year after fleecing Milchama City for this talented youngster who helped them to their first top division finish in 8 years.
Set up man 2: Yossi Kevern (New Babylon Pirates)- In every situation where manager Morey needs a few outs he always seems to turn to Kevern to get those clutch outs. So he brings him along for the national team.
Middle Reliever: Jenny Seaver (Wickert Wanderers) - The other women of the team (Which by the way is a record for Milchamian national teams). Seaver was not a hard throwing pitcher but her crazy knuckle and screw balls more than make up for a subpar fastball.
Long Reliever: Marcos Olian (Milchama City Trolleys)- Actually a starter for the Trolleys, Olian's flexibility and incredible stuff make him a perfect candidate for a reliever.

Lineup (w/o DH or regular):
1. Forest O'Kelt - The best OBP man on the team which makes him the perfect candidate for the leadoff position. He's also a heck of a defensive second basemen.
2. Kelsey Evers- While she doesn't have that much power her bat control, eye, speed and overall approach to hitting makes her a wonderful hitter in the number 2 spot.
3. Martin LaPlante- Returning the Comets to respectability was no easy task but LaPlante started the movement and one reason was his 54 home runs, some of which he's hoping to replicate in this WBC.
4. Itay Hafava - A three true outcomes hitter. While he does play a really good left field, which is rare for a TTO, if he hits one watchout!
5. James Merter- Considered to be among the best all around players in Milchamian history. His arguing was one of the reasons that the MBL allowed its players to go international again. He's hoping to cement his reputation as one of the best of all time by performing in international play.
6. Rudyard Davies - A line drive hitter with power. Davies will occasionally hit a home run but is an excellent doubles hitter always putting it in the gap. He's also known for a cannon of an arm in right field.
7. Dani Eltanor- He's actually the leadoff hitter for his club. His plate discipline and speed make him a weird candidate to be ahead of Thomas but we trust Morey, he seems to know what he's doing.
8. Henry Thomas- One of the best hitting catchers in MBL history, is only batting 8th because his power does not match up with the middle of the order. However, his position is in no way a reflection of his talent.
9. Pitcher

Lineup (w/DH):
1. Forest O'Kelt
2. Kelsey Evers
3. Martin LaPlante
4. Itay Hafava
5. James Merter
6. Ben Aminton
7. Rudyard Davies
8. Henry Thomas
9. Dani Eltanor

[OOC: To anyone new, I have a playful IC rivalry with Newmanistan, hence the snide remarks]

Tarrentum Falcons

The Tarrentum Sports Committee, alongside the International Baseball League and IBL Players Corporation, announce their roster, starting lineups and pertinent information for the World Baseball Classic 18. The Supreme President Cesare Italiana once again personally announced all members of the national team earlier this week as he does for most international tournaments.

Major changes were announced as teams and players drastically improved or drastically fell off the face of the earth in last year’s IBL season. Ferdinand Cossomo, though managing the Bolonza Atomics to a mediocre 80-82 season (19 games behind), leads the World’s Number Two team out into the fray once more.

The roster got a major shake-up this year as perennial participants Antoni Favella, Ferdini Zappataro. Erni Washini and Ederi Sallamo were left off the team due to their poor IBL performances. The reasons behind Favella not appearing may have something to do with low numbers but could also be tied to his attempt to participate in the highly touted (though glaringly non-existent) Newmanistani Baseball League. Favella eventually came back to play in the IBL, though very quietly and with little monetary incentive.

The newly renovated MegOil Imperium Stadium, home to the Napoliroma Legion. The stadium, located on Cosairi Island in the River Salai, features a bevy of luxury amenities. The stadium holds a maximum of 53,325 with 25 luxury suites ringing the foul area. Even Pocono City couldn’t even make a ballpark as beautiful and stately as Imperium!

*Position: First and Last Name, Age, B/T (Uni #)
Coaches
Manager: Ferdinand Cossomo, 42 (97) – Cossomo has made a name for himself these past four years in the IBL as the manager of the Bolonza Atomics. The Atomics, who appeared in three consecutive Championship Series in the past four years, winning two, are currently rated as both the top team in the IBL and as the highest revenue-producing team.
Bench Coach: Fr. Rogerro DeSalvo, 71 (01) – Father DeSalvo, a Benedictine monk who coincidentally manages former IBL Champions Apollonian Monks, was brought on by Cossomo for his ability to bring a mid-level club to the Championship Series and win. DeSalvo is widely respected throughout the IBL for his cool head and calculating on-field tactics as well as his steadfast devotion to the Church and to the Lord.
First Base Coach: Ruboni Kilia, 52 (10) – Kilia has been in the First Base Coaches Box for 20 years holding the position with a variety of IBL and IBML (International Baseball Minor League) teams. He has coached for Napoliroma for the past five years. Kilia also serves as the outfield instructor for the Legion.
Third Base Coach: Joe Greene, 55 (11) – “Clean” Joe Greene, as he was known during his own ball-playing heyday, is the Pitching Coach for the Riori Cannons and widely recognized as an outstanding teacher of the game. Greene was selected by Cossomo to be his Third Base Coach for his teaching ability and for his ability to knit together a true “team mentality.”

*Position: First and Last Name, Age, B/T (Uni #)
Pitchers
SP 1: Liona Marrada, 28, L/L (17) – Marrada’s continued dominance of major league pitching put her in second place for the league’s overall pitching award. She came up short to Natalie Pessotto but most analysts rate Marrada above Pessotto among IBL pitchers. Marrada’s #1 spot in the rotation is firmly secure after her tremendous Classic last year. She led the IBL in Wins with 25 and at 6’5” is one of the tallest IBL pitchers. 2.57 ERA, 25 – 5, 18 home runs allowed, 20 BB, 205 K, 1.02 WHIP, .242 OAVG, .287 BAbip, 10.25 K/BB, 7.02 K/9, 26 QS, 136.7 VORP

SP 2: Natalie Pessotto, 31, L/L (23) – Pessotto continued her surprising dominance of IBL hitters this year when she anchored the expansion team St. Catherine Mets to an outstanding 3rd place finish in the Eastern Division of the CL. Pessotto led all Starting Pitchers in ERA, SHO, VORP, H/9, K, K/9, OAVG, WHIP and the esoteric Fielding Independent Pitching (2.15). She also finished in the Top 3 in IP, BB/9 and K/BB categories. The only thing going against Pessotto right now is her age but if we are ever to see a little Pessottina running around, Natalie will have to retire from baseball soon. 1.73 ERA, 22 – 5, 13 home runs allowed, 28 BB, 255 K, 0.77 WHIP, .181 OAVG, .238 BAbip, 9.11 K/BB, 9.38 K/9, 30 QS, 142.4 VORP

SP 3: Juliana Italiana, 26, S/R (36) – The beloved niece of Supreme President Cesare Italiana. Juliana broke the gender barrier in IBL six years ago not through political force but through sheer skill and determination. As more and more women come into the IBL ranks Italiana has managed to stay at the top of her game. This was a truly great year for Italiana as her performance vaulted her name into MVP and Top Pitcher award talks. She has effectively found a new personality as her argumentative ways are mostly behind her as she took on the veteran leadership role for the expansion Ventili Kings franchise. 2.80 ERA, 17 – 3, 1; 10 home runs allowed, 33 BB, 174 K, 1.11 WHIP, .255 OAVG, .302 BAbip, 5.27 K/BB, 6.17 K/9, 27 QS, 125.7 VORP

SP 4: Christian Buonconte, 32, L/L (10) – Buonconte had another great year with the VC Stars as the Western cuba team was only able to keep one of their star pitchers, losing Pessotto to the Mets. Buonconte’s 21 wins helped anchor the Stars rotation and he built up a great rapport with Antoni Favella behind the plate. Buonconte’s 202 K’s was good enough for a tie with Fironte Sareb for 3rd-most in the league. 3.24 ERA, 21 – 6, 19 home runs allowed, 55 BB, 202 K, 1.16 WHIP, .245 OAVG, .297 BAbip, 3.67 K/BB, 7.62 K/9, 20 QS, 102.9 VORP

SP 5: Fironte ‘The Kid’ Sareb, 21, R/L (77) – Sareb’s career returned to normal as he went back into the starting rotation for the Lower Marentian Rams and headed up their meager rotation. Sareb relies on three pitches: Fastball, Cutter, Spliter; but is one of the best in the game at utilizing them. Sareb has had some rocky Classics in the past and is looking to be a good “back of the rotation” anchor for the Falcons this time around. The loss in Game 6 of the WBC Finals last year is still “a very real and haunting example of how far I have to go to be great.” 2.64 ERA, 18 – 7; 12 home runs allowed, 17 BB, 202 K, 1.00 WHIP, .240 OAVG, .300 BAbip, 11.88 K/BB, 8.09 K/9, 15 QS, 107.7 VORP

Mid Reliever: Romeo Vasparian, 25, R/R (74) – Vasparian tested the Free Agent market during the off season and it was probably the best move of his 4 year career. He signed a 2-year, 9.44 million jasite contract with the Lulika City Dragons (Silver Beach) and became the teams number one pitcher. His 23 wins helped spur the Dragons to a league leading 108 wins. 3.29 ERA, 23 – 3; 8 home runs allowed, 65 BB, 149 K, 1.27 WHIP, .237 OAVG, .285 BAbip, 2.29 K/BB, 6.54 K/9, 22 QS, 89.4 VORP

Mid Reliever: Gaele DeRosi, 35, R/R (35) – Though after his disastrous WBC 15 no one thought that DeRosi would be asked to be back representing Tarrentum – but they were wrong as DeRosi had a great year, leading all IBL relievers in 13 wins for the expansion Moorhatch Rebels. Though DeRosi has a lot to prove and may only be used in special situations, he has the stamina and the specialty pitches to confuse batters who may not be very familiar with his delivery. A delivery that’s been described as “half artform, half ostrich.” 6.05 ERA, 13 – 3, 1; 8 home runs allowed, 46 BB, 1 K, 1.82 WHIP, .333 OAVG, .321 BAbip, 13 HLD, 19 SVO, 15.8 VORP

Mid Reliever: Gerardo ‘Merlin’ Villa, 39, L/L (15) – The magician called Merlin is one of the oldest players on the National Team roster at 39. Villa’s age did not stop him from posting a career season with the Trumboi Archers. He was let go by the Riverton Otters of Charlestown last season after a poor season but found some New Age crap in the offseason to help him as his career winds down. Merlin’s on-field rituals are some of the most widely amusing, and confusing, in the IBL – and possibly the world. He once made a moat around the Pitcher’s Mound with his right cleat during his in-game warm up and then filled it in, little by little, after every pitch with his left cleat. When asked afterward his reasons for creating and filling in the mini-moat Villa stated that the dirt’s “inner *unpronounceable word* was all off and needed to be rebalanced.” Some say that he rediscovered himself after a long trip through the backcountry of Newmanistan – which explains a lot.3.28 ERA, 5 – 2, 1; 10 home runs allowed, 16 BB, 2 K, 1.20 WHIP, .270 OAVG, .252 BAbip, 24 SVO, 1 BS, 44.6 VORP (First WBC)

Mid Reliever: Aroghetto ‘Iceman’ Dassu, 27, R/R (6) – Dassu has flown under the radar these past two seasons for the St. Catherine Blue Jays but is definitely one of the most popular and most consistent relievers in the game. This consistency helped Dassu be named to his first All-Star team this past season. 2.42 ERA, 8 – 2, 3; 4 home runs allowed, 42 BB, 89 K, 1.19 WHIP, .219 OAVG, .274 BAbip, 2.12 K/BB, 7.44 K/9, 23 HLD, 32 SVO, 56.4 VORP (First WBC)

Setup: Diggs ‘Black Jack’ Turano, 22, R/R (24) – Turano should sound familiar to any active followers of the Keisler Cup tournament as Diggs was one of the best pitching prodigy’s to come up from the U21 National Team. Now in his second year as Trumboi’s primary Closer, Turano posted 21 saves and the second lowest ERA among relievers with 2.29. Turano’s growth in the game is only seen as benefiting from playing in the World Baseball Classic. Turano was also named to his second All-Star Roster (Confederation League). 2.29 ERA, 5 – 4, 21; 4 home runs allowed, 37 BB, 90 K, 1.20 WHIP, .210 OAVG, .289 BAbip, 2.43 K/BB, 9.80 K/9, 26 SVO, 44.4 VORP (First WBC)

Closer: Mike Robinson, 35, L/L (23) – Robinson led the league in Saves this year with 40 and had one of the top ERAs among relievers at 2.44. Robinson became the primary Closer for IBL Champions Lake Empress this year after appearing in 100.2 innings last year as a set-up reliever. The Stallions benefited from Robinson’s arm as he was named to his first All-Star roster and was named the Confederation League’s “Pitcher of the Month” for October. The Stallions victory in the Championship Series was such a surprise that Robinson is the team’s only participant on the National Roster. 2.44 ERA, 8-3, 40; 8 home runs allowed, 25 BB, 55 K, 1.15 WHIP, .236 OAVG, .259 BAbip, 46 SVO, 2.20 K/BB, 5.16 K/9, 49.5 VORP (First WBC)

*First and Last Name, Age, B/T (Uni #)
Catchers
Valerio Utteroni, 35, S/R (52) – Utteroni has been behind the plate for the Napoliroma Legion for nine years (four regulation years). Utteroni showed everyone in the league that he still had power taking first in a number of statistical categories of IBL catchers including: SLG, OPS, wOBA, VORP, HR, RBI, RS, BB, ISO, XBH and Total Bases. BA .325, .OPS 1.139, 47 HR, 158 RBI, 127 R, 80.5 VORP

Luis Corona, 27, R/R (10) – With the initial departure of Antoni Favella to the Newmanistani Baseball League and then the young catcher’s eventual return after the NBL’s dissolution, the second spot on the national roster for catcher became a wide-open race. Into this void stepped Luis Corona of the Riori Cannons. Corona’s scouting report states everything you need to know about him: “An average guy.” Corona is so average that he placed second or third in 9 statistical categories among catchers. He was recognized for his standout year with a selection to the CL All-Star squad. BA .361, OPS 1.040, 23 HR, 95 RBI, 109 R, 63.1 VORP (First WBC)

*First and Last Name, Age, B/T (Uni #)
Infielders
Gregorio Cecere, 23, L/R (5) – Cecere got the nod from Cossomo as his “Tarrentian Rookie” pick. Like Magaglio last year Cossomo decided to go with a middle-infielder to back up his veterans. Cecere spent two years in the ANML (AAA) before being called up by Husoni and starting at shortstop for the 78-84 Knights. BA .292, OPS .876, 20 HR, 111 RBI, 111 R, 13 SB (6 CS), 26.2 VORP (First WBC)

Ty Fitzgerald, 33, R/R (21) – Fitzgerald, who was constantly just missing the national roster, finally had a year to remember. The hot bat for the Napoliroma Legion made a case for AL MVP after leading the league in Runs Scored (156) and leading all third basemen in SLG, OPS, wOBA, HR, RBI, ISO, XBH and Total Bases. BA .354, OPS 1.090, 43 HR, 151 RBI, 165 R, 0 SB (1 CS), 82.8 VORP (First WBC)

Tristan Dolami, 28, S/R (40) – Dolami comes in as being the most consistently high-performing shortstop in the IBL. Dolami’s inclusion does not necessarily exclude rookie Cecere from appearing in the starting lineup during the WBC. Dolami led all shortstops in RBIs and Runs Scored as well as leading the league in fielding Assists (538; second place had 496). This is not Dolami’s “first battle” as he was a part of the WBC 16 team. BA .346, OPS .436, 27 HR, 145 RBI, 152 R, 4 SB (5 CS), 73.7 VORP

Xavier Gradoni, 32, S/R (18) – Gradoni plays third and first base for the Riori Cannons. Though he had a phenomenal last year, Gradoni definitely lost a step in comparison with other players at his position this season. Gradoni led all first basemen in OBP, RS and walks (BB) and finished in the top three in 7 statistical categories. He was named to his 4th All-Star team. BA .330, OPS 1.125, 40 HR, 145 RBI, 165 R, 91.7 VORP

Dessea ‘The Dream’ Vallena-Favella, 24, R/R (15) – Vallena-Favella anchored the Vladgrad City franchise at second base. She played the most games in her career this year for the Stars as her injury issues seem to be well behind her. She was teammates her husband in the IBL for the first time as the Stars signed Antoni Favella after his failed attempt to play in the much vaunted (but scarcely accomplished) Newmanistani Baseball League after its failure. While the Favella’s were unable to propel Vlagrad City into the playoffs, the team’s woes had mostly to do with the loss of Natalie Pessotto than any position player. Vallena-Favella was in the top five ranking in 17 out of the 18 tracked statistical categories for all players at second base. BA .338, OPS 1.095, 40 HR, 146 RBI, 157 R, 17 SB (11 CS), 90.7 VORP

*First and Last Name, Age, B/T (Uni #)
Outfielders
Armando Tovar, 31, L/L (19) – Tovar, star CF of the Apollonian Monks, had a dominant year. Tovar’s selection to the team ended the semi-stability that the outfield corps had witnessed the past two Classics, however Tovar is a man who knows how to deliver. He led all center fielders in OBP, VORP, HR, RBI, RS, ISO, XBH and Total Bases and, at 6 feet 5 inches, is one of the more imposing figures on the Falcons roster. BA .326, OPS 1.096, 44 HR, 158 RBI, 155 R, 4 SB (0 CS), 82.1 VORP (First WBC)

Paul McGee, 29, R/R (1) – While there were no true standout left fielders in the IBL last season, Paul McGee was consistently at the top of most analysts lists for best at his position. McGee led IBL left fielders in HR, RBI, RS, K and XBH. McGee was also named to his second All-Star roster. BA .315, OPS 1.044, 47 HR, 181 RBI, 161 R, 59.2 VORP (First WBC)

Brenaccio Macca, 29, R/R (3) – Macca ran his way to a second consecutive Golden Base Crown. The speedy CF stole a league-leading 46 bases last year and led all center fielders with 11 triples. Cossomo once again went with speed over power with Macca’s addition to the team. BA .335, OPS .904, 8 HR, 107 RBI, 150 R, 46 SB (23 CS), 33.9 VORP

Joe Thomas, 24, L/L (17) – Thomas led all right fielders in AVG, Hits and Total Bases this past year. His playing time in the Classic is up in the air as Cossomo also selected Andrew O’Higgins, the top right fielder in the IBL last season, as a member of the national team. Thomas’ only hope to be in the starting lineup is O’Higgins widely known poor fielding. BA .398, OPS 1.137, 40 HR, 122 RBI, 123 R, 5 SB (8 CS), 82.6 VORP

Andrew O’Higgins, 31, L/L (22) – The relatively unknown IBL veteran had his breakout year last season and helped Casslaha to first place in the AL Northern Division. O’Higgins led all right fielders in SLG, OPS, wOBA, VORP, HR, RBI, BB, ISO and XBH and was named to his second All-Star team. While his addition to the national roster wasn’t a stretch, his irritating personality and selfishness may have Cossomo regretting his decision. BA .321, OPS 1.179, 59 HR, 186 RBI, 147 R, 0 SB (0 CS), 102.2 VORP (First WBC)

Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No, Lineups are posted
Follow my Pitching Rotation: Yes
Godmod scoring events: Yes, within reason
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but only to the extent of saying what player was injured. Severity will be at my discretion
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes, one per game – No bench clearing brawls with mass ejections
Godmod other events: No, except for weather.

Other factoids: The International Baseball League does not have a DH for any team. All games played at MegOil Imperium Stadium will not have a DH in the lineup. If a game is decided by one or two runs either way then my starting pitcher was taken out and a reliever was put in. This means that for a 3-2 Tarrentum victory, either my Setup or Closer got the Save.

The Megurokan National

SPORTS

WBC 18 REPORT
Failure. Epic Failure. That was Meguroko's journey in WBC 18. A popular internet meme in Meguroko is Failed like a Megurokan Baseball team. Until the Saugeis Invetational Baseball Tournament. The team advanced all the way to round 3, losing in 3 games to Civil Citizenary. The team is back in WBC 18 in Cassadaigua. Can the team make it past the Group Stage? Most likely not. Can the team do better than they did in WBC 17? Likely as long as they remember how to play baseball. The team's second campaign begins in 5 more days. In other news, the Snowhill Robins beat the Botros Bears in 6 games to capture the Meguroko Baseball League title. Snowhill and Botros are represented well on the team, with Henrik Davidsson, Fredrik Frosso and the Savs brothers from Snowhill, and Fred Livos and James Davos from Botros. All players are returning, but Grog Svalls will pitch after Game 5 in the GS, as he suffered a seperated shoulder in Zabison City's loss to Botros in Game Seven for the EL championship.

Fielders - Name, Position, Uni#, B/T
Catchers
Ryu Takamori, C/1B, #36, S/R. Better batter than defensive catcher. Often pinch-hits for Uehara if runs are needed.
Hideo Uehara, C, #21, R/R. Defensive-minded catcher with strong arm to throw out basestealers.

Infielders
Genji Furukawa, 2B, #75, R/R. Youngest regular starter. Pretty good hitter.
Kenji Momose, 1B/C/3B, #93, R/R. Utility infielder usually used for defensive substitutions.
Yoshinori Sawada, 1B/3B, #16, R/R. Good defensive fielder, but not very fast and not all that great at hitting.
Minoru Shiraishi, 3B/1B, #44, L/L. Speed and good contact hitting are strengths.
Satoshi Takeda, SS, #45, S/R. Strengths are in contact hitting and defense.
Azusa Uemura, 2B/SS/RF, #9, S/R. Good feet, decent glove, subpar bat.

Outfielders
Toya Kaneda, RF, #27, S/R. Good defensive fielder and the best bat to get runners home.
Kei Maebara, LF, #50, R/R. He is most dangerous at the plate and on the basepaths. Defense...not so much.
Junichiro Mori, CF/LF, #99, L/L. Can play anywhere in the outfield and has good speed.
Daisuke Taguchi, CF, #23, S/R. Not that powerful a hitter, but good throwing arm and gets on base pretty frequently.
Mio Yamagishi, RF/2B, #22, S/L. Can hit hard but often inconsistent. Not great speed but known to make incredible catches when needed.

Pitchers - Name, Uni#, B/T
Manabu Hashimoto, #86, R/R. Long reliever.
Juntaro Ikeda, #59, R/R. Power pitcher who has both a 4- and 2-seam fastball, as well as a decent 12-6 curve. Injured, out for rest of tournament.
Taro Izumi, #30, R/R. Ace of the staff - has a fastball that can reach the mid-90s as well as a cutter, a slider, and a change-up.
Toyohiko Kono, #38, L/L. Middle-relief pitcher.
Kyo Kunimoto, #58, L/L. Control pitcher whose repertoire includes a slurve, circle change, curve, and 2-seamer.
Natsuki Minamoto, #77, L/L. Set-up man (er, woman) who sometimes closes.
Kouhei Miyabara, #60, R/R. Closer. Relies on a low-90s fastball combined with a change-up, with an occasional slider for good measure. Getting up there in age.
Sadaharu Miyanohara, #89, R/R. Long reliever.
Shizuma Murase, #66, L/L. Long reliever.
Keiichi Okazaki, #72, R/R. Relies chiefly on fastball mixed with a couple of breaking pitches.
Yuuto Shirai, #20, R/R. Long reliever brought up to replace injured Juntaro Ikeda.
Reito Tachibana, #94, R/R. Middle-relief pitcher.
Shizuru Yoshino, #79, R/R. Relies on knuckleball and an occasional 12-6 curve to confuse batters and make them look silly, which tends to play into the mind games she likes to play. Unknown how this will play out at this high level of play.

"Today is a proud day for the men of Colmark who have been selected for the first outing of the full national team. The World Baseball Classic, the most prestigious baseball tournament in the world, awaits these semi-professional players. Lets hope they are up to the challenge"

Starting Lineup
Frederick Hamishson (CF)
Lewis Harris (LF)
Adam Evans (1B)
William Nixon (3B)
Richard Ashmore (2B) Captain

Tom Stewart (Pitcher)

Reserves
James George (Pitcher)
Rob Wilce (Pitcher)
Mark Putch (Pitcher)

Callum Broadbent (C)

Head Coach: Harrison Thomas

Home stadium: Farringdon Park (capacity 7,400) Please note that away fans will be allocated a maximum of 1,000 tickets and that the DH rule is NOT used
Farringdon Park is the largest baseball stadium in Colmark, where even the top matches are rarely watched by more than a couple of thousand people. Based in the capital city of Fortnam, the stadium is situated on the outskirts of the city, with a large public park on one side and a outlet store on the other. While it will almost definitely be the smallest stadium used at the WBC, there should be a good atmosphere inside. There will be little in the way of modern conveniences, there is no jumbotron, no mascots, though there will be an organ player and concessions mostly selling good old Colmarkian hog roasts and mutton, but will, of course, supply 'peanuts and crackerjack'.
One final note on the stadium: it is looked after lovingly, but on a tight budget. It is slightly rickety and the changing rooms, particularly for the opposition, are tiny. The away changing room would only have space for six players in a full sized dressing room, so squeeze up!

There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night
Ten to make and the match to win
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play, and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

OOC: I'll like to thank Cassadaigua for letting me into the tournament at the last minute.

Western Cuban Radio
Jason Yuran

A smile smirked on Jason's face when he heard the latest news. The Western Cuban team was going to play after all. This was a great morale boast to the people, as there was all-out war on the Western part of Cuba. He then turned on the radio broadcast for an emergency announcement.

" Welcome citizens of Western Cuba. We have wonderful news. It has been decided that the national baseball team will play after all! This comes hours before the group draw which was announced minutes ago. The Western Cuban's which were in Pot A have been selected to be in Group 5 along with Mangolana, Virabia, Clampo, and Delaclava. The new roster of the Western Cuban National Team has also been released.

Western Cuban National Baseball Team Roster

The roster remains much the same however there have been a few tweaks, a few players from the Keisler 3 Cup winning U-21 team have picked to join the national team. These men include Fredek Fenyak, and Brody Ukhtomskii. Also sadly Dug Acta was killed in the Battle of Havana against the Britannians. In his place is Arman Pletenetsky with his number being changed to 67 as Philip Castro already has his number.

The Zwangzug Zebras!

Numbers after the teams denote their first tournament: this is mostly for personal record keeping. RPers have free rein, though I'd ask you to justify any departures from the given lineup or "rotation".

The Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used at our home stadium, the Worm Hole (located in Spenson).

Manager: Henry Maddox (Hadiln Tigers)

After the relative debacle that was WBC17, we appear to have given up on the whole bullpen thing altogether. Instead, all twelve Zebras pitchers are starters on their professional teams (though they'll also come off the bench to work relief here). The starters for the group stages games will be the first eight listed, in order; no set rules as to who comes in when, feel free to make it up if you're RPing before me (but probably not the starter for either the previous or following game).

#11, Kayla Lutrick, R/R, Belpub Wildcats, 16 (starts in Cabric)
#47, Brian Vaughan, L/L, Weegham Rainmakers, 16 (starts for Teinohikira visit; starts game 2 against Lycrabon)

Meddicia Golden Crowns

For the first time the Royal Sports Council was able to meet the deadline for Roster submission to the World Baseball Classic.

In other news, pigs are said to have sprouted wings on Mt. Jacs...

Head Coach/Manager: Cristiano Fatorini (53) - Fatorini is the first Manager for the expansion St. Catherine Mets in the IBL. He led the team to an impressive 3rd Place finish in the Eastern Division of the Confederation League.
Bench Coach: Mauro Bo (35) - Bo is the first-year Manager for the Burtonsburg Lions (Woodlands Baseball League, AAA) and led them to a 2nd place finish in the Ash Division last year.
Pitching Coach: Sebastian Barattin (42) - Barattin has been a Pitching Coach for 11 years but most analysts don't think he'll rise above his current minor-league level of AA where he coaches in the Kingdom Baseball League for the Carrara Bruins.

Position Players {Pos - Name - Age - B/T - Team}
C - Amedeo Casoli (29) L/L (North Run Valleycats) - Backup catcher for this Meddician club. .264BA, .360 SLG, 5 HR, 56 RBI
1B - Steve Bloch (30) L/L (Confrenden Wildcats) - Bloch is the most dominant Meddician in the IBL so far and parlayed his talents into his first All-Star appearance this past season. .369BA, .638 SLG, 45 HR, 166 RBI
2B - Jose Colombi (28) R/R (Lower Marentian Rams) - Colombi is the backup second baseman for the Rams. .344BA, .484 SLG, 13 HR, 81 RBI
3B - Paulin Cimabue (27) R/R (Vladgrad City Stars) - Cimabue is the backup third baseman for the Stars and has a solid swing. .354BA, .524 SLG, 7 HR, 75 RBI
SS - Ernesto 'Lawdog' Mollica (28) R/R (Florentine Diamond Kings) - Mollica, a former Royal Mountain Police officier during his minor-league days, is one of the best defensive infielders in the IBL. His primary position is 1B for the Diamond Kings but is very good at SS also. His primary faults are with his hitting - or lack thereof. .267BA, .376 SLG, 11 HR, 56 RBI
LF - Tristan Pometti (25) R/R (Ventili Boars) - Pometti came up during the beginning of the season and earned himself the backup LF spot on the bench for the Boars. .303BA, .428 SLG, 3 HR, 58 RBI
CF - George Maringhi (27) L/L (Tarrentum Storm) - Maringhi is the primary backup in the outfield for the CL Eastern Division Champion Storm. .243BA, .388 SLG, 11 HR, 81 RBI

OF - Ray Damasso (27) R/R (St. Catherine Mets) - Damasso was a backup OF for the Mets and appeared in 46 games. .240BA, .359 SLG, 4 HR, 23 RBI
OF - Bartolomeo Verrochio (28) L/L (Florentine Generals, ANML) - Verrochio was a September call-up for the Diamond Kings. Season 4 Stats (Combined): .313BA, .522 SLG, 8 HR, 54 RBI
C - Michael Lorenzelli (27) R/R (Krozuy Falcons) - Lorenzelli played for four teams last year: Henderson Leopards (ANML, AAA), Ventili Kings (IBL), Krozuy Little Falcons (ANML, AAA) and the Krozuy Falcons (IBL) as a September call-up. As a member of the Little Falcons he won the ANML Player of the Week award twice for his play during the first two weeks of August. IBL Stats (Combined): .269BA, .385 SLG, 3 HR, 13 RBI

Pitchers
SP 1 - Eustachio Pegoretti (30) R/R (Krozuy Falcons) - Pegoretti had a decent year with the Falcons and was the winningest Meddician pitcher. 17-11, 107 K, 4.76 ERA, 1.49 WHIP

SP 3 - Natalie 'Earthquake' DiVittorio (27) R/L (North Run Valleycats) - DiVittorio, the only female on the Golden Crowns roster, earned her nickname while in college for the hurt that her errant fastballs put on opposing batters. She has grown considerably in the minors and in the majors. 15-5, 169 K, 3.85 ERA, 1.24 WHIP
SP 4 - Primo Annoni (27) L/L (St. Catherine Mets) - Annoni rebounded from a sub-.500 season with the Krozuy Falcons last year to one of the top pitchers with the Mets. 15-9, 144 K, 2.57 ERA, 1.50 WHIP
MR - Hieronymus 'Junior' Weisflog (18) L/L (Vladgrad City Stars) - Junior Weisflog was born to immigrant parents while in Meddicia and claims Meddician citizenship because his parents went through the 15 year process and stayed in the bureacratic channels to see it through - something amazing for the ethnocentric kingdom. Weisflog is one of the youngest major leaguers in the IBL. 11-3, 145.1 IP, 180 K, 2.11 ERA, 1.00 WHIP
MR - Paolo Fiacconi (38) L/L (Napoliroma Legion) - Appeared in an amazing 93 games as a reliever for the Legion this season. 7-0 (3), 112.0 IP, 101 K, 2.57 ERA, 0.98 WHIP

Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No, Lineups are posted
Follow my Pitching Rotation: Yes
Godmod scoring events: Yes, within reason
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but only to the extent of saying what player was injured. Severity will be at my discretion
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes, one per game – No bench clearing brawls with mass ejections
Godmod other events: No, except for weather.

Other factoids: The International Baseball League does not have a DH for any team. All games played at Boars Ballpark will not have a DH in the lineup. If a game is decided by one or two runs either way then my starting pitcher was taken out and a reliever was put in. This means that for a 3-2 Meddicia victory, either my Setup or Closer got the Save.
Horribly Ethnocentric. So Ethnocentric we don't even use Quodite, Sarzonian or Tarrentian products.

Sakurakoku's Steep Task
Making the playoffs will be a feat

Sakurakoku has a steep hill to climb if it wants to reach the knockout rounds in its second go-around at international competition at the 18th World Baseball Classic - it has been drawn into Group 6 along with Tarrentum and Sarzonia, the world's 2nd and 11th-ranked baseball teams, respectively. This is the highest ranked 1-2 pair among all eight groups in the tournament. As only the top two of the five teams in each group advance, Sakurakoku is going to have to both win its games against newcomers Chenkorya and Queentain and hope to steal a game or two from the top dogs in the group.

Kei Maebara, Sakurakoku's starting left fielder and de facto team leader, doesn't seem fazed by the task in front. "We've surprised teams before the last time we were here," he said, referring back to Sakurakoku's debut at the 16th World Baseball Classic. "I know that we can win if we play at our best. We just need to go out there and play."

Their first two roads games will be critical, as they will opening their tournament at Tarrentum and, after a trip home to face Chenkorya, will play at Sarzonia. If Sakurakoku can steal a win from one of these two, a chance to advance can be had.

THE WBC 18 NEWMANISTAN ROCKETS

World Baseball Classic 10, 12, 15, 17 Champions.
World Baseball Classic 7, 9, 11, 14 Runners-Up.
The Greatest Nation in WBC History.

Technical stuff:

Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No, as my lineup is posted here. Follow that!
Follow my Pitching Rotation: My starting pitcher for the next game will always be announced in my RP from the previous game.
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but only to the extent of saying so and so was injured. I’ll determine the severity
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes on a basis of no more then one more then you eject from your own team.
Godmod other events: No, except for weather. That you can. NO NO-HITTERS/PERFECT GAMES AGAINST US UNLESS YOU ARE RANKED IN THE TOP 5 IN THE WORLD. I CONSIDER IT A GODMOD IF YOU ARE OUTSIDE THAT AND PLAYING US.

Additional Information that is very important to me: Newmanistan does not prescribe to the modern day concept of pitch counts determining how long a starting pitcher is kept in for. In fact, pitch counts are not even kept track of outside of curiosity sake. Such count is not displayed on the scoreboard, so if you want to track it for your pitcher, you must do it manually. If Newmanistan has given up 3 runs or less, then the starting pitcher has gone all nine innings. No ifs, ands, or buts. This is true even if it would have been a save situation.
– Another Newmanistan trait is aggressive base stealing. Think back to the days of Vince Coleman and Ricky Henderson in their primes.

Head Coach- Christina Sanders (Southport)- has coached all of our teams so far.
Hitting Coach- Allyson Payne (North Charlotte)
Pitching Coach- Carrie Lynsder (Hampton)

Home Stadium for all Group Stage games will be Empress Jessica Stadium (formerly Pocono City Stadium). The DH is NOT used.

Rotation: (pitchers bat with the same hand the pitch with)

Newmanistan down 3 games to 0 in the World Baseball Classic 17 Championship series. Game 4 is won, and now the Rockets need two ladies to step up, step in the way their predecessors always did. Courtney Ratigan and Jessica Brasfield did just that. They were always great. Now, they are legends. And unfortunately for the competition, both are back, and both are still under 30 years of age.

1A)Courtney Ratigan (RHP- Olympia)- At 29, Courtney has done her part to become one of the most fabled pitchers in Newmanistan history, which if you know us, is a big accomplishment. She’s already been on two championship teams, but is two as desireable as three? Of course not. Her specialty is the heat, but that wicked cutter will give your batters fits. Also has an impressive curveball and slider.

1B)Jessica Brasfield (RHP- Pocono City)- The 28-year old finally became the “Brashfield” in the WBC as she is back in Pocono City with all of her trash talk. She clearly got in the head of Tarrentum’s Gina Torretta in the championship series, and you could see the effects of Gina’s, then the Falcons, unraveling. Jessica backs it all up on the mound, and like Ratigan, has already won two championships. She’s at her best when she changes the speeds of her pitches. She has a great fastball, and knows how and when to mix in a a great changeup and curveball. Her slider has also developed quite well.

1C) Brianna Bruce (LHP- Springfield)- Brianna is a pitcher who just keeps gradually getting better year after year, and is now at her highest spot in the rotation, after being the 1E starter in WBC 17. The 26-year old debuted in Keisler Cup 1, and has accrued a lot of international experience, and also has two championships. Brianna will beat you with a curve and cutter more often then not.

1D) Courtney Keisler (RHP- Stroudsbourg)- Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time. Behold, the one and only second coming of the greatest pitcher to ever play the game. If it was anyone else, you might think it was too early for a 16-year old to have this big of a role. She hasn’t even officially pitched a game for Stroudsbourg yet, but was selected by them with the #1 overall pick in the draft. But everyone agrees that it’s time, and now Courtney is set to make the same kind of mark that her mother did. Her fastball is still developing, obviously, but is still impressive. She may be more reliant here on the curve and slider, plus a splitter. The Empire can’t wait to see her represent the homeland. The “Next One” will officially debut in MD4 against cupcakes, err, Coffee Cakes. Probably still cupcakes.

1E) Meghan Stewart (LHP- South Tier)- It’s possibly ironic, but probably not that Meghan also debuts in the starting rotation. The 21-year old is the daughter of former SP Tara Stewart (who is also a WBC Hall of Famer). Tara Stewart and Stacey Keisler’s careers coincided, so it’s not that completely coincidental that they would have daughter’s around the same age as well. While Courtney has gotten all of the attention, and bypassd Meghan, coach Sanders is obviously eager to see what Meghan could do at this level as well. The opportunity presented itself, and this hard thrower should capitalize.

Bullpen: (Smaller then most because of the nation’s reliance on starters)

Cassie Herrick (LHP- South Tier)- Cassie is actually a starter with South Tier, but the 29-year old is more then happy to continue to pitch on the senior team as a reliever. Look for the southpaw, who brings the heat but also a nice cutter and slider, to act as the main long reliever in case a starter needs to be pulled early.

Brittany Castelli (RHP- Fairfield City)- The 26-year old was a starting pitcher for the Rockets in WBC 15 through 17, and still starts with Fairfield City. But with Keisler and Stewart now in the fray, she is downgraded to long reliever. Her high work ethic keeps the coaching staff confident that she will be able to accept the role and do well.

Rachel Cosgrove (RHP- Tundra Falls) - Rachel will likly be assigned the middle innings, or extra innings. With the Mariners, the 26-year old is a starter, so that will be just fine with her. Her curve is her out pitch, but she will bring the heat as well.

Set up/Short Relief: Sara Schaefer (RHP- South Tier)- Sara is a versatile pitcher that could pitch in long relief, but will instead be used here. The 33-year old was widely considered our top reliever during WBC 15 as a 7th inning or an extra inning specialist before stepping into this role for the WBC 16 and since then always steps up when called upon. Unlike the other relievers here, she actually is a reliever at home.

Closer: Erica Barrett (LHP- Southport)- She will not be the first name that comes to your mind when you thinking of great Newmanistanian pitchers, or great closers in the game. But this was the one spot in the roster that we struggled in the early days to find stability with. Barrett, still just 25, has provided that, and figures to be in this role still for quite a while as long as she remains as effective as she has been so far. She is a hard thrower and mixes in a cutter and splitter to go along with it, and just when you think you might have her figured out, she’ll add a knuckleball just to keep you off balance.

Batting Order: (throws/bats)-:

1) Caitlin Leffler- CF (R/R- Stroudsbourg)- Who’s this, you ask? Why it’s the latest Rockets speedster that will be giving your pitchers and catchers fits. Stacie Meadows has retired from international play, so now this 21-year old Keisler Cup graduate steps into the role and is ready to flourish.

2) Kaylee Picard- LF (R/S- Nashua)- The toughest decision that coach Sanders had to make was to figure out which speedster deserved to take the spot vacated by Meadows. But in thinking about it, she opted to simply put Leffler and Picard 1-2, giving the Rockets twice the speed threat at the top of the lineup. At 20, Picard has also been a teammate of Leffler’s at the Keisler Cup level.

3)Courtney Weinman- RF (R/R- Tundra Falls)- Courtney has emerged as the leader of the offense. One of the top things about the 32-year old veteran to appreciate is the fact that she doesn’t look like someone who’d be a power hitter based on her physical stature, but she is. She also has a career .342 BA and averaged 45 HR’s per season.

4) Meghan Butler- 3B (R/R- Dover City)- The 34-year old needs to be feared just as much as Weinman, and is the captain of the team, otherwise. Butler’s the biggest HR threat in the lineup, averaging 49 HR’s per year, and unlike Weinman, she does look like someone who would be a power threat. She also sports a career .333 BA.

5) Kristen Wheeler- SS (R/S- Pocono City)- At 31years of age, “Miss Clutch” is still in her prime and should continue to impress at this level. She has all the tools, hitting for average and power (averages 29 long balls a season), and has a career BA of .467 with runners in scoring position. Don’t forget about her on the basepaths either, or she will steal bases often as well.

6) Courtney Stafford- 2B (L/S- Olympia)- When the Rockets trailed Tarrentum, 3-games to none in the championship series, coach Sanders made a subtle change to the starting lineup to “wake it up”. That change was replacing Rachel Cuyler with Stafford at 2B. The rest, they say, is history. The 23-year old now has the job full-time, and since the championship victory, you can see her confidence soar even further, and she has posted career-best numbers in BA (.340, then .345), and HR’s (35, then 41) the last two seasons. If that wasn’t enough, she’s a defensive wizard, who is like Wheeler on the basepaths: don’t forget about her.

7) Julie Sexton- 1B (R/S- Olympia) Sexton may have taken a Classic to get comfortable with her starting role, replacing the great Natalie Monroe, but in WBC 17 she definitely showed why she got the nod to start. In Olympia, Sexton also hits directly behind Stafford, so that should only help the two of them with their confidence as well. The 25-year old mainly hits for average, but averages 14 HR’s a season at home, so can’t completely blow off that potential.

8) Tara Rulison- C (R/S- Centralia)- The 32-year old has a career BA of .271 and averages 13 HR’s, so she is not a liability with the bat in her hand. But make no mistake, she is here for her behind the plate ability. She is a master of working with pitchers, and in throwing out baserunners (and remember we run a ton in Newmanistan, so Rulison is well-experienced in attempting to throw people out).

9) Pitcher

If DH: Danielle Scott- OF by trade (R/S- Southport)- The 28-year old started in the last four WBC’s, but became the odd woman out when Sanders opted for more speed at the top of the lineup. Scott is just fine with this, especially since Sanders is also her manager with Southport. Danielle is mainly a contact hitter, but has a career .328 BA, so she does it well. She also averages 108 walks a season.

On the bench: (we have more people here then most only due to our small bullpen. It all evens out.)

Kristen Snider- C- Only to be used as a substitution behind the plate, never to pinch hit.
Rachel Cuyler- MI
Erica Hilton- CI
Jillian Sanderson- OF
Corinne Gratton- OF
Jessica Larkin- Utility

OOC to those not as familiar with me in baseball: The Newmanistan media and players are arrogant. They know they are the #1-ranked team in the World, and the winningest team (championship-wise) of all-time and they flaunt it whenever possible. Don't take offense.

Qazox' Schedule

Matchday 1 @ Churchma
Matchday 2 v. Momojemima @ National Stadium, Fromburg (Capacity: 37,989)
Matchday 3 @ Carasatoga
Matchday 4 v. Cotdelapoms @ Pheonix Stadium, Qazox City (Capacity: 61,108)
Matchday 5 BYE
Matchday 6 v. Churchma @ Pheonix Stadium, Qazox City (Capacity: 61,108)
Matchday 7 @ Momojemina
Matchday 8 v Carasatoga @ National Stadium, Fromburg (Capacity: 37,989)
Matchday 9 @ Cotdelapoms
Matchday 10 BYE

Qazox, the 3rd ranked team in the World, has gotten a rather easy group draw. Carasatoga and Momojemina are newcomers, and Qazox should sweep those 4 games. Churchma is ranked only 14th, the 3rd highest second seed and Cotdelapoms is ranked 27th. The only main drawback is Qazox might not face a top-10 ranked team until the playoffs; and the soft schedule could produce overconfidence.

Once more with feeling!

CASSADAIGUA - Once again, Lycrabon looks on in great interest as the Blue Jays look to break through to the WBC semifinals, which would be their first in six - counting this year - tries. The seventeenth installment, to put it bluntly, sucked. Great controversy over umpiring crews led to upsets, traditional playoff squads failing to advance, and an epic comback/collapse (depending on how one looks at it). The Jays themselves had a frustrating run, finishing at 3-7. Version eighteen has a very familiar ring to it as old rival Newmanistan is in the way of a group title. The remainder of group four (ranks as of the conclusion of WBC 17):

Jah Sensimilia (NR): a new team, we don't know much about them. Just for shiggles and gits, let's call it a sweep.
Coffee Cakes (NR): see above.
Newmanistan (1): Familiar rivals, the then-Hurricanes started three brawls in four games against the defending champion Rockets. Although we hope to get at least one win...
Lycrabon (17)
Zirakul (29): We saw these guys last time, so let's call a split.

Overall, we predict a 5-3 or 6-2 finish. Six wins will guarantee a playoff spot, five should get us in.

THE DRIVE FOR FIVE STARTS NOW

Southport- Whenever Christina Sanders looks around her office in Southport, she has plenty to be proud of. Four World Baseball Classic championships, multiple domestic championships, and the undisputed best manager of all time, at least as far as we are concerned. She comes back, again, and some might wonder what possibly motivates someone as accomplished as her to continue to come back. Love for the game? Love of competition? Those are the easy answers.

“Look there!” Christina says, directing Rocket Report staff to look at her four World Baseball Classic championship trophies. “What do you see?” she asks. The staff grins, and most of the response is centered around there being room for another trophy to be displayed. Sanders smiles and shrugs them off. “Ten. Twelve. Fifteen. Seventeen. Which of those numbers are consecutive?” Sanders grins as reporters now begin to realize what she is getting at, and continues, “We have never won back-to-back championships, and you all know that we have been close. It is something I really want to do. I never even thought about ending by managerial career after the last one. Not that it would have been easy because I knew this was going to be a very exciting team we’d have in this edition, but I want to repeat, and I think this team we have this year will give us our best chance at it.” That fire in her eyes still burns. You can see this passion. This team is ready and hungry, so before the prognosticators start saying things like this might be Tarrentum’s time at last (especially since this final will be a best-of-five and not a best-of-seven and they know how to win three in a row). Or they’ll talk about Cassadaigua’s wanting to rebound after their hard times in the last classic and having the ability to do so on their home field. Maybe Tocrowkia also has an inspired rebound, or maybe it will be Zwangzug. Maybe Qazox takes another step forward to getting back where they were an eternity ago. Those are the fun picks. No one likes picking the accomplished bully to win a fight (and no, we’re not talking about little runt bullies who think it is wise to step up to a big kid in school and find themselves getting bodyslammed). This bully walks down the hall with the swagger, and with the history of success, and will not back down. He’s always up for a fight. Bet against the Rockets? Not advisable. Not when it’s a team coming off an amazing comeback in the last Classic. Not when it’s a team hungry to do something it has never done before, and repeat. Not when the lineup has a considerable jolt of energy in it with the addition of “The Next One.” Like it or not, Newmanistan is the favorite, and they have every attention of going for this title very aggressively.

It is time for World Baseball Classic 18, and the groups have been drawn. For Newmanistan, the magic number is fittingly, four. Newmanistan is in Group 4 with Jah Something, Cupcakes, Zerocool, and Lycrabon. Only the last one figures to pose any semblance of a threat to us in the group stages while the others are expected to be good little pushovers for our Rockets. Though who knows, perhaps one of them is a future star. If so then don’t worry, the Rocket Report will ultimately give you the respect we showed Lycrabon by spelling their name properly. Actually, this might not be that bad of a group as Jah Sensimilia and Coffee Cakes have already produced rosters. Good to see, perhaps they will have some fight. There is no Baptism of Fire in the World Baseball Classic, but these new nations will certainly feel like there will be as they find themselves going up against us. Especially poor Coffee Cakes which is going to have the unfortunate distinction of having to be the opposition of “The Next One’s” international debut. But don’t worry, Coffee Cake fans, one day you can look back fondly at being the first ever opponent of the great Courtney Keisler. The breakdown of the tournament could be tough for those second pot teams, but we are not one of them, and all kidding aside if all goes well Newmanistan probably won’t be challenged much until the quarterfinal round, at the earliest.

So let’s just sit back and sleepwalk on our ranking. Sorry world, not gonna happen!! This Rockets team is indeed going to push for this title hard, from start to finish!

ROSTER

Starting Rotation
34 Brad Baxter (RHP): Nicksia Nighthawks Baxter led the Sarzonian major leagues in wins (17), innings pitched (172) and strikeouts (156).
18 Chris Carlton (LHP): Portland Fishermen Unlike the other lefty starter in Sarzonia's rotation, Carlton is a hard thrower, but has learned to throw a hard curveball in addition to his big, slow curve, which serves as his off speed pitch. He also throws a sinker when necessary.
27 Brian Edwards (RHP): Lexington Flight Despite the Flight's last place finish in the Incorporated League, Edwards was an 11 game winner (11-5, 2.67 ERA). He doesn't strike out many and relies on a sinking fastball to get ground ball outs.
22 Charlie Palmer (LHP): Portland Fishermen Known for having the best changeup in all of Sarzonian baseball, he was named the first-ever Jim Palmer Award recipient for postseason MVP after leading the Fishermen to a Sarzonia Series crown.
16 Josh Campbell (RHP): Woodstock Mountaineers His performance during the Cyanea Series against Delaclava's Quinniville Conquistadors propelled the young Campbell into the starting rotation to replace the now-retired Sutcliffe.

Bullpen
32 Kenny Spencer (RHP): Saugerties Streakers Spencer is arguably the best setup man in the history of the sport in Sarzonia. He has only six saves in his career, but makes a living closing the door in the eighth inning.
29 Jay Ballard (LHP): Nicksia A specialist at getting lefthanded hitters out, Ballard made only one career start in secondary school. He threw a two-hit shutout in the state championship in that start.
33 Roger Tolliver (LHP): Avalon Aeros The lefthanded long reliever for the Aeros, he led the league with most innings pitched by a reliever (79) without making a start. His 38 appearances led the league among all relief pitchers.
17 Kerry Clark (RHP): Woodstock The leader among all of Sarzonian baseball with 29 saves, Clark has a devastating curveball and fastball. He's working on developing a change up.
39 Alvin Dryden (LHP): Rypien Rhinos Dryden is the lefty closer on the national team and will alternate with Clark depending on the opponent. Dryden led his league with 27 saves.
58 Alan Tisdale (switch-pitcher): Woodstock Lists himself as "semi-dextrous" because he's a power pitcher as a righthander, but a finesse pitcher as a lefty.
36 Calen George (LHP): Woodstock Mountaineers George really made a name for himself during the Cyanea Series by throwing two lengthy shutout outings in relief against the Quinniville Conquistadors, including a five-inning stint in Game 7.

Position Players (starters in bold)
C 10 Fred Carlton: Grovesmont Gryphons Carlton is the best defensive catcher in Sarzonian baseball. Calls a great game, threw out 44 percent of opposing baserunners. His problem: He hit .227 with only two home runs.
1B 36 Skip Hale: Woodstock Steps in to play first base in favour of the retired Everly, who joins the Stars as hitting coach. He is expected to have some growing pains in the position.
2B 6 Dewey Griffin: Avalon The sparkplug for the Aeros, Griffin led both major leagues with 44 stolen bases and nine bunt hits. He was tied for second in the league in sacrifice hits (bunts or flies).
SS 2 Chris Spontanelli: Townshend Tigers: One of the many shortstops in the Cal Ripken mold, Spontanelli led his team with 17 homers and 81 RBI. At 6'5", he's the tallest starting shortstop in Sarzonia.
3B 9 Kate Schmidt: Bristol Bears: The only female to earn a starting spot on the national team, she hit .309 to lead her team and smacked 11 home runs.
LF 19 Tyrell Gordon: Portland Set a record for most outfield assists in college or high school baseball with 133. Had only two outfield assists this season when major league teams decided not to risk running on him.
CF 23 Drew Bradley: Avalon A speedster, Bradley is known for his graceful play in center and led his league in outfield assists with nine.
RF 24 Mark Dwight: Nicksia Not much with speed or a throwing arm, but Dwight specialises in being at the right place at the right time. He led the league with a .361 batting average.

Reserves
OF 11 Micah West Grovesmont Not the fleetest of foot, but has a rocket for a throwing arm and has excellent anticipation.
OF 7 Tyler Hunter Bristol: Can play either corner outfielder position, but his throwing arm is arguably the worst in the league. Is better known for his bat.
C 13 Mario Salvidotti Avalon: Improving as a receiver, Salvidotti led his team with 21 home runs and 89 RBI.
IF 3 Russ Fraley Bristol Handled his demotion to reserve behind Schmidt with surprising grace and honed his skills as a shortstop so he could play short, third or first. He also is learning how to play second.
IF 5 Bryan Carroll Portland Extremely valuable asset to his team, he can play any position in the infield. Could serve as the emergency catcher if necessary.
