I have a really spotty streak of the olympics lmao. 2014 winter olympics followed by the 2016 winter olympics. I keep missing the sign ups cause it seems like theres always "possibly this date? maybe in a month." and then a day later "sign ups are closed" and it happens in the blink of an eye. So this year im watching this thread like a hawk checking in daily.

There's a long mathematical answer, but it's unnecessarily complicated. The long and short of it is that if you had every entry at 50, your STDDEV would be zero. If you had half your entries ranked 0 and the other half ranked 100, your STDDEV would be very high. The latter - representing half your athletes being amongst the best in the world, and half your athletes being minimum Olympic standard - is a very unrealistic scenario which gives you an unfair competitive advantage. Thus, it is discouraged by the Min-Max Avoidance Bonus (MMAB).

...how do you calculate the STD DEV or is it based on the guidance posted "50-100 entries = 27-20 STD DEV"?

Edit: Im assuming theres an equation I need to do

From what I can see, the sign up sheet calculates it automatically in the "STD. DEV." box.

The Excel sheet is definitely the easiest way to organise a signup if you can, as it calculates all the stats for you. Much easier than doing it manually back in the day!

The instructions are specific on this because we use a program to turn the signups into a xkoranate startlist. Readability is not a factor.

Confirming the following defending champions, if entered, are exempt from qualifying for the 16th Winter Olympics. In team events like relays or doubles where only one team is entered, any team with at least one member of the defending champion team will be exempt (if a whole new team is entered, they will have to qualify on merit). In bobsleigh, the defending champion pilot (first name listed) will be exempt from qualifying. In luge doubles, if the defending champion team is split up, the higher-ranked entered team with at least one member of the defending champion team will be exempt.
