While I don't think I'm ready to host a Summer Olympics solo (although it is no secret that I have been considering a bid for the next Winter Olympics), I do have an idea for how we could hold a Summer Olympics in the absence of a host that is both willing to host one and ready to do so solo:

While there would only be 1 IC host nation, many of the individual events would be scorinated by somebody other than the host (each individual scorinator taking on a sport or maybe a few sports, with the IC host taking on the remaining events), to reduce the host's workload. To avoid a repeat of the issues that have plagued events with many scorinators in the past, the IC host would be the organizer of the event, would produce all of the input text files (and make them publicly available) and would step in in the event that any event scorinator should fail to scorinate their event on time. To make this work, there would be a 24-hour scorination period, during which event scorinators may scorinate their events at any time. This would be followed by a 24-hour period where there would be no scorinations (except for the IC host stepping in, immediately after the previous scorination period expires, to scorinate any events that weren't scorinated on time). RP bonuses would be left up to whoever scorinates the event.

While I'd prefer a conventional Olympic bid (by a qualified host who feels that they are ready to take this on), in the absence of a conventional bid, I'd be willing to put together a bid based on the above idea.

I was actually going to suggest something similar if nobody bid. But I didn't want to organize it all myself. I would definitely be willing to scorinate a few events if necessary.

I like the idea of a bid like that. I'd like to see what the Presidential view on it is as well as how such a bid would be made, accepted, and the hosts chosen.

I think you can forget about that given you have not hosted anything in this forum.

I'm generally against Saintland's idea and would much rather bid again – which I don't really want to do – to host the Olympics should it come to that. That said, a co-hosting bid involving two nations I'd probably be more open to. But not one which would involve six different scorinators of differing experience. This is the biggest and most important single event on this forums (maybe behind the WC) and we can't afford to let it be a learning ground.

Because I want to maintain some modicum of diplomacy as president of the Olympic Council, I'm going to let someone else try to explain to you why that is a bad idea.

If you want to, you can write a bid IC-Ly a a roleplay once the Olympics start. That will give you experience writing host bids but you won't have a chance at winning an event you are totally unqualified to host. You can set it up like an actual bid then explain it lost due to your lack of hosting experience. Like Baku IRL. That's what I did for several events before I was ready to host.

I think 2 hosts, maybe 3, should be maximum. If there is any more, NS Olympics (9) coupd be very confusing. It is a nice thought though.

I agree with Liventia about the multiple hosts idea - if you look to the EAF (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=264622), it was largely a total disaster, with the large number of people hosting. As a result, it was very confusing and a number of events weren't scorinated before it fizzled out, and it has been decided to never run it again as a region. It had very low RP levels as well.

To be fair, I think the EAF is a pretty much perfect example of how not to do a multi-sport event. A lot of the events weren't scorinated because the people doing the scorinating felt unappreciated, because nobody was RPing, because everybody was too busy scorinating and feeling underappreciated to RP. Vicious cycle.

Don't do multiple hosts kids.

The first thing I suggest is to participate in a few of the other events around the forum to get a feel on how these tournaments and sports RPing works. The Olympics are a very, very big deal in the forum. It's the second largest event (in terms of participation, second to the World Cup) in NS Sports and only well trusted nations consider to host it.

Hosting the Olympics is a big deal as well. You will need to set aside a few hours of your time everyday for 30 days to scorinate (that is, generate the scores) for the various events. With over three hundred events and dozens of nations competing, you would need to keep track of thousands of entries. In a nutshell, don't go for hosting it, it will certainly be rejected as 1. You are a new member of the community and 2. The Olympics is a huge undertaking.

But how do the community know you're ready for it? The Olympic hosts have usually hosted heaps of stuff before, whereas you haven't hosted a thing. If you must bid for something, make it something smaller to start with.

Because a) a joint bid for the Olympics has never happened before and it's currently a topic of much controversy on this very thread, and b) co-hosting the Olympics is still a massive undertaking, and no one, I repeat no one, on this forum would trust anyone with exactly 0 experience to scorinate half of the largest event here.

You don't understand just how big it is. Olympics hosting is reserved for the most trusted of members because of the sheer enormity of events that need to be scorinated. Do you know what scorinator to use? How to collate the information? How each Olympic event works? You haven't RPed in a single NSSports event, merely 'participating' (signing up) doesn't even count for experience. It's typical for new players always fall into the trap for bidding for events, even when they don't know how NS Sports even works. Stop and think about it. Please. You have zero experience and there's no way that your bid will get through just because of that.

As someone who just hosted the Winter Olympics, I can say that it was hard enough trying to keep track of 100+ different nations' entrants (if all nations put in the max of 200, which they didn't but most did, it would've been 21600 entrants to list out) in the 96 individual events.

Now, at minimum, double the amount of nations (and thusly, the amount of athletes, since the Summer max is 300 entrants), and triple the amount of separate events.

I can't fathom running that, even after running the Winter Games. A user who undertakes hosting the Summer Games needs to have complete confidence from the community to run it. Anything less and it's likely they won't get chosen.

If this Games should be joint hosted, then I suggest it should be two very experienced nations, not a "senior-junior" partnership like what is seen in the World Cup cycle events.

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=296187 <--- This is a cool event...

Can someone answer me a question? I'm new and I'm just confused.. Why are the most active topics OOC discussion threads? Nobody wants to host anything? Do the handful of events that are active right now really take up that much time just rping and responding? No offense meant.... People would rather debate the Olympic thread than sign up for something like the Memorial Games? I don't get it...

Okay, that was more than one question... :p

I understand scorinators are complicated. I don't have excel on this thing, so I couldn't get it to work properly. But come on... If everyone is so experienced, lets get some more tournaments going... Everything doesn't have to be a huge dramatic production...

Hey, do you have a scorinator and know how to use it? If so just make up your own cup or something and practice... Sure a lot of snobs won't join in, but some of us are dying for an RP without waiting 6 weeks for sign ups, roster threads and the like..

This is actually a fantastic way to start hosting, though this thread isn't the place to discuss it.

Problem is, not everyone is so experienced (like, for example, I don't have anywhere near the experience to host the Olympics), and many of our more experienced members have left us in recent weeks. Others that remain don't have the time to host at the moment. Sorry you had to show up at such an inopportune time, but that's the way it is for the time being.

On the topic of two hosts, there is a RL precedent in Melbourne 1956 games, where the equestrian events were held in Helsinki, Finland. I think something like that could work, with both hosts hosting IC as well as OOC. But I agree with Liv that too many hosts would be a problem, especially in regards to RP grading consistency.

Also,@Vangaziland: The most active topics are discussion threads because we want to discuss stuff. Tournaments do not just happen, they take planning here as in RL. The Olympics and World Cup are the two single biggest tournaments on NS, naturally they take the most planning. They also require the most experienced hosts.
