Havl Loses to Torisakia in Overtime

Stalliongrad, the Equestrian States – In the opening match of World Cup of Hockey playoffs, 25th-ranked Torisakia defeated 3rd-ranked Havl in overtime to hand the defending champions their first loss of the tournament. Both teams played evenly throughout the three regulation periods before a Torisakia goal in the last 30 seconds forced the game into overtime. "Competition is really tough in the playoffs," said head coach Nicklas Lindberg. "These teams have played ten games now, and the best have risen to the top."

Diamond Park, an outdoor venue traditionally used for Hoofball, proved to be an effective hockey stadium thanks to favorable weather conditions and a unique view of looming mountains. The industrial town of Stalliongrad showed up in full force to witness the game, but there was a strong Havl presence in the crowds as well. "It's really cool," said Harleston native Frank Chedderberg, who traveled to the Equestrian States with a group of friends. "[The stadium] reminds me a lot of the annual HHL outdoor game, which the [Harleston] Knights won this year. Boo-yah!"

Playoffs in the 21st edition of the World Cup of Hockey consist of a best-of-three format until the final, which will be a best-of-five. Both teams looked eager to take the early lead in the opening round, and tight defense was the order of the night. Torisakia drew first blood when Cassidy McKenzie scored less than five minutes into the game. For all of this Havl team's strengths, team captain Justin Donndelinger said they feel uncomfortable being behind in a game. "It's important for us to score first," said Donndelinger. "We play better hockey when we're in the lead." The Capital City native tied the game with two minutes remaining in the first on a saucer pass from linemate Jason State.

The second period saw both teams take a lot of shots, but Davis Rich and Torisakia goaltender Kevin Hautifi stopped a combined 20 shots. "It was a lot of shots," said Rich. "[Torisakia] were keeping up with us. I was hoping to tire them out, but they never ran out of steam." In close games, Coach Lindberg often relies on his team's youth and energy to wear out opponents. But the strategy proved futile as Torisakia had energy in bounds. Brian Demerson scored what looked like the game-winning goal early in the third period, but Torisakia's Alexei Borodin tied the game with just 23 seconds left on the clock. "It's devastating," said Rich. "Giving up the tying goal that late feels like a knife in the chest."

Both teams put their best lines out for the overtime period, and Havl appeared strong for the first 15 minutes, getting seven shots on goal to Torisakia's two. But with four minutes left, a carefully-placed wrist shot from Kristen White trickled past Rich to end the game. When a missed pass by Quinton Ancrum sent the puck into the Havl zone, McKenzie took advantage and set up White for a right-place, right-time goal. "We were sloppy," said Donndelinger in reference to the play. "If [Ancrum] had caught that pass, we might have won the game. It was close; they played us well.

With the win, Torisakia leads the best-of-three series 1-0. Coverage of World Cup of Hockey XXI continues on HTVM Saturday evening as Havl faces 25th-ranked Torisakia live from Stalliongrad for game two of the Round of 16.

Polkopia leads 1-0 against Valanora in Round of 16

The first game of the Round of 16 has concluded, leaving Polkopia up one game against the team from Valanora. The game ended in a 2-1 victory for the Polkopian team, and hopes are even higher for the Polkopian team, as this is the first time that the team has made it this far, and they have already won their first game. While it is still possible that Valanora will win the next two games, Polkopians everywhere are sure that their team will make it all the way.

The first period of the game was marked with the go-ahead goal by the Valanoran team, giving them the lead in a 1-0 score. The next two goals were scored in the second period, one by offender Ott Yarlov, who before, had assisted in many goals scored by Roman Shotov and Fernando Hemmingway alike. The second goal was scored by Ronald Pultz, with an assist by Roman Shotov. Pultz had been substituted in after coach Yuri Kamakasov decided that Roman Shotov had no performed up to par thus far. Although this was good in the long run, fans were eager to voice their criticism against the coach's decision, as Shotov is the clear fan favorite.

Roman Shotov is expected to start again next game, along with the rest of the first string offense and defense. Coach Yuri Kamakasov expects great things from the team, and has been working well with the team throughout their long journey.

Lacking Class

Some might see this headline and think that the Vanorian side that lost last night is who lacks class. That however is not the truth of this headline, though it could be a fair argument for those such inclined to delve down that path. No, this is about the victors and their inability to use the proper denonym when addressing those from the Commonwealth. Yet this lack of class and inability to grasp the proper denonym for us is not exclusive for Polkopia, but for many nations within the NSverse. It is especially mystifying and gives lead to believe that the improper use of Valanoran is an insult when the VSC goes out of their way to provide the right terminology in every single tourist brochure and guide to the various national teams representing Valanora.

I could write on ends about the struggles the Calcuttas have faced in this and previous World Cups of Hockey, but that is just a small footnote when compared to this issue. What more can we as a people and our organizations do to right the continued wrong that happens tournament after tournament, media source after media source? There has been so much on the outreach to try and get the information out there to the various national medias and citizens to have it right and yet it continues to seemingly be ignored.

Now looking at the potential elimination at the hands of Polkopia and their lack of class, it makes us scratch our heads in wonder. How can people who ignore even basic etiquette be the ones that are threatening to put us out of a tournament that at one point where our stomping grounds? It may be nearly two decades since the EHL and Vanorian national team held the world of ice hockey as their own playground, but they have ever been near the top of the echelon and demanded respect. Now these fresh faces not only lack the class to use the right terminology, but dismiss all that history and experience with a cocky arrogance that enables them to tell their media that they expect to advance over the Calcuttas.

Change is coming for the Calcuttas soon, the roster is likely to look entirely different next edition from this one, and the EHL may come out of its international isolation. Yet it falls upon those still here to make these fresh faces once again respect the side, to grab ahold of this last opportunity to impress and do it. It means finding their form and class and everything else needed when donning the national team sweater and finding a way to get victories. By luck or skill, these players are playing for pride, for respect, and for their spots on the national team. What more can they need to be inspired? If this is not motivation enough for this group, then I have no idea what else could motivate them and perhaps the national team program is lost.

However, that is not what I believe to be on the cards. Like in the playin round, I expect these players to find that resolve that is needed. They can not look at the situation as needing to win two games in a row, there is only the game tomorrow night that need be won. Shift by shift, period by period, they need to out hustle their opponents to every loose puck, hit those passes they need, and make the stops that is expected of them. Do that and they will win each shift, each period, and then the game. Then, they can look to the next game and a comeback to tell their children of, but it all needs to start from the moment the puck drops in game 2.

A tip of the cap is warranted for Byfugland goaltender Ryan Underhill.

In a truly remarkable effort, Underhill stopped all 34 of the shots on net against the Mohawk Clans, including several saves that flaunted not only his athleticism, but his quickness and agility. Rapid onslaughts of shots, cross-crease passes, chances in the open slot, all were stoned cold by the Jets netminder. In a game where the blueliners did not play as well as they should have, Underhill made up for it with his stellar play.

The game was back and forth, each team splitting time on the attack rather evenly. The Mohawk Clans seemed ready to penetrate the aggressive forecheck, and used impressive passing plays to get open shots that could not be blocked. Though the Mohawk Clans did get numerous scoring opportunities, they could not put one in the net.

The game was scoreless after a period, with the closest chance coming off the stick of Jets forward Cliff Soricelli, who rang one off the left post. In the second period, with nearly eight minutes remaining, the Jets speedy third line executed a brilliantly orchestrated dump-and-chase play, with Fyodor Makarov sending it in, Rodrigo Gregorio going behind the net and passing it to Garrett O'Sears, who was open in the slot to put it home.

The third period was highlighted by Underhill stopping 14 shots.

Now, about your two goals this game. The first goal came when the Ice Bisons were shorthanded, with Hei Hayate out due to a tripping call early in the third.

It was just a good opportunity. I saw an opening in the net, and with the rebound, I was able to push the puck through. Normally, my penalty-kill unit is just brought in to clear the zone and ice the puck as soon as we get the touch. However, Walon managed to steal the puck at the blue line, and a quick switch had him going up the ice. We followed, acting almost on instinct and watching him take the puck in deep. A quick wrist, a rebound, and the puck found me.

And your thoughts on Hakoda getting the First Star for his own two goals, plus the assist on Ito's powerplay goal?

He is the alor'ad after all... What else would you expect?

Skirata, this is Aaron. What are your thoughts on the Ice Cats?

They are a strong team worthy of advancing, that is for certain. However, we are just as strong and just as worthy.

And what of Torisakia? Have you been following that series as well?

After the games, in the locker room on a large dry-erase board, Kad'buir gives a briefing on the night's scores. So yes, we have been following the Torisakia-Havl series. Nice to see it go to a shootout tonight, though shame to see the Ice Birds not get the win...

After a 3-2 victory in overtime over the defending World Champs, it is surprising to see such a team hold off the powerhouse Havl.

Torisakia is not a team to be underestimated; they sure ran us through our paces and brought us our only defeat in the Group Stage.

And what of Cassidy McKenzie?

She is a very talented player, and I only hope to face her again.

Now, the first game seeing the Bisons trail 4-nil moving into the third period was gut-wrenching, and today, seeing them take an early 1-nil deficiet was enough to give me a brief heart-attack

Absolutely, Tonraq. Perhaps Head Coach Skirata needs to shift the focus from maintaining a slight focus on the offence to lightning-quick assaults in the opening minutes of the match, and then shifting to defence.

The only problem with that, Aaron, is when you shift, the opponent adapts. What if while we are too busy focusing on making a goal, the Ice Cat Things make their way past Zhao and sink an early one into the net, take the lead, and never give it back?

A valid point... but I want to know. What can we expect to see tomorrow?

We can certainly expect to see Zhao in the net to start. Sure, he had a rough day Friday, but this tournament he has been on fire! With a 0.937 percent save percentage, he is playing at a career-level high.

True, but when he has a bad day, the team loses. Our offence has been strong this tournament, and our defence has been suffering from what seems a case of lazy.

That they have... In the eleven games played this tournament, they have allowed twenty-seven goals, which is the second highest amount of goals allowed; lower than the Eightteenth World Cup of Hockey where the Ice Bisons allowed thrity-five goals throughout the tournament.

Yes, but that tournament saw the boys go home with Third Place; and how many goals were allowed at this same point?

Announcer: At the second game of the Round of Sixteen in World Cup of Hockey Eightteen, the Ice Bisons had allowed twenty-five goals, scored forty-one, for a plus-sixteen goal differential.

See? Only two goals ahead of where they were three years ago.

Polkopian Team Issued First Loss Against Valanora

The second game of the Round of 16 has concluded, and the Polkopian team is faced with their first loss of the cup, with a 2-0 loss against Valanora. Although the team fought hard to win, the team from Valanora simply ousted the Polkopian team in a desperate attempt to equalize Polkopia's lead against them. The score between the two teams is officially 1-1, with Polkopia winning the first game, and Valanora winning the second.

The first period was marked with a series of gaps between the Polkopian defense, allowing for an early goal by Valanora. The next goal wouldn't be scored until the third period, where a mistake from defender, Ivan Nuev, would allow yet another goal scored by the team. Several close attacks came from Valanora, and it's a wonder how more goals weren't scored against Polkopia, but the miraculous defense by goalie Yuri Sviatoslavich kept Polkopia from suffering too much humiliation that night.

"Sometimes you're on and other times you're not. There isn't much use in keeping our heads down." Said Polkopian offender Fernando Hemmingway, who had two dangerous attacks on Valanora, but were stopped immediately by the clever defense seen by the opposition. "The only thing we can do is shake it off and play our asses off tomorrow." When asked about the same incident, Ivan Nuev refused to talk about it, immediately leaving the scene. Teammates stated that he was too flustered to even talk to them about it, and he immediately took a much-needed rest after the game.

Coach Yuri Kamakasov expressed his disappointment with the defense in a team meeting right after the game. "We should've never let so many players go through. We practiced this, and you simply did not perform. I am not talking to anybody in specific; I am merely speaking to the team as a whole. You're each responsible." After the harsh words were delivered to the team, Kamakasov seemed to have a change of heart, and his long speech seemed to have a change in tone. "It's alright though. We're not out of it yet. We'll beat these bastards like we've beaten all the other teams we've faced!" As usual, the coach expects great things from the team in the day to come.

On a side note, we officially and formally apologize to the nation of Valanora, with the misuse of the Vanorian denonym, which we wrongfully replaced the correct denonym with 'Valanoran.' We here at the PNN claim full responsibility for the issue, and we can assure that such a mistake will not happen again. The PNN also apologizes to any Vanorian citizens that were offended by the use of such a wrongful term, and, as stated before, we can assure you all that this will not happen again. Thank you.

Hello everybody, this is the Sour Kind once again presenting to you the Minnows' World Cup of Hockey 21 journey in this amazing commentary. As we have all heard through the news, watched through the news, seen through the news or whatever, the Minnows just lost to Soviet Canuckistan 4-6 back at Equestrain States. Well the news came as a shock but it was certainly uncalled for, what a defeat against this nasty Canuckistans. Anyway, today I'm sorry to say I didn't really invite ice hockey personalities to my commentary but here we have today, a good buddy of mine, Jakob Raymundo. for the record.

Thank you the Sour Kind or should I say TSK. Right to the rink, the Minnows were defeated by the Canuckistans back in their second match series of the WCoH Round of Sixteen match and will have to count on their third match series to qualify for the quarter finals with the series tied 1-1 between the two sides. So how are we viewing the last match series here, who will be the deciding victor in the most important match series in the matchup between the both sides?

For me, the Minnows is of course the victor for the match series after all, they have known to be able to keep the best for the last, they might be inconsistent and wasteful in front of goal but they have the quality in their style of play, which definitely will be the deciding factor between the two sides in the match up.

It's all about the technique here buddy, but what I have been looking at for the match up would be the utilisation of teamwork by the both teams here, in the previous two matches, the Minnows have a higher pass completion percentage rate than the Cancukistans here, completing passes at a higher percentage of 55% than their opponents' 35%, not even half of their passes managed to reach their target, the one thing that the Minnows can exploit there, intercepting the passes against the opponents.

Absolutely friend, it just takes one miss pass of the puck and there you have it, a counterattacking opportunity, how is it all worth, Moving on, here is it, a stand out performer once again for the Minnows. Who is who?

In the two match series, it was Rad Nebu that has appealed to me the most, performing silently behind offensive line two's attack and rarely actually recognised for his efforts, he is the one performer for me. I heard you did a commentary of him the previous commentary, how of a joker or clown he can be?

He's one clown and one clown that everybody would play a joke around with. Trying his best on the rink is always one thing and in the previous match, his efforts resulted in two of the Minnows' goals against the Cancukistans. Or whatever you call them, well lets not be rude. Focusing more on Nebu now, contributed two assists to the Minnows' cause in the previous game, he is certainly one player to be praised.

He's just one talented player I suppose. Well so the next match for the Minnows, are the Minnows sure to win the series and go on to the quarter finals?

i suppose yes to such a talented squad of players. And here is it for me for the time being, because it is now time for a break.

EQUESTRIAN STATES- The Canuckistani mens hockey team defeated Mapletish by a score of 6-4 in Game 2 to stay in the Round of 16. The first goal was from Mapletish early on with Rad Nebu finding the back of the net at 2:02. The team from Mapletish continued the pressure and earned themselves another goal with Petter de Vries getting the goal with Rad Nebu assisting at 5:20 to put them up 2-0. The first goal of the game for the Canuckistanis came around the 15 minute mark with Smith finding the Mapletian goaltender out of place to put the Canuckistanis on the board. The second period was not a good one for Team Canuckistan as Rad Nebu earned himself another goal at 5:12 off of a pass from Maarten Skertel. The last goal in the second period was by Jari von Evenvelde of Mapletish at 17:21 to put his team up 4-1 going into the third. The third period was one to behold, with it being the best 20 minutes of play that the Canuckistanis have ever played. The second goal for the Canuckistanis was scored early on at 31 seconds with Dubruch sneaking it past the Mapletian goaltender to narrow the gap to only two goals. The pressure continued as the Canuckstani defence kept the Mapletian team from breaking out of their zone and with Plamondon-Piquette scoring at 5:12 off a one-timer from the point with the pass from Peunov. The tying goal was around the 10 minute mark with Petrovski firing it right through the five-hole. The Mapletian team almost scored but Albanski just got enough of the puck with his blocker to keep the Canuckistanis hopes alive. The last two goals to earn and secure the Canuckistani win came from Ioeusci who managed to bounce the puck off of the Mapletian goaltender's blocker and into the net at 15:24 and managed to deke around both Mapletian defenders and their goalie to earn his second goal of the game at 17:12 to win the game 6-4.

Here at SC Sports, our prediction for Game 3 is that it is going to be close but that the Canuckistanis have a good chance of winning with Game 1 having to go to a shootout which the Mapletian team barely won and with the Canuckistanis outlasting the tired team from Mapletish to come from behind for Game 2. The press in Mapletian has been predicting that Mapletish will easily win with the play of Rad Nebu and that the Mapletian team plays better in the late moments of the game, though the latter has not held true for Game 2. We talked to the sports writer of the Moscawa Times, George Nebluski and these are his thoughts on Game 3, "If our team can play as well as they did in the third period of Game 2, we'll definitely win. As long as our team plays strong, we'll do well. The Mapletian team is looking tired out there for sure, their defence fell apart for the third period and without a strong defence, they couldn't combat the Canuckistani offence, which in combo with our defence is a lethal combination." Other interesting scores from the second day of play of the Round of 16 include Qazox and Plutoni winning both of their series, our rivals Valanora beating out Polkopia to tie up that series and last year's champions Havl just barely staying in it with a shootout win to tie up that series. Tommy's Blog

So this is my last blog post probably for a long time. Since we aren't going to win, I shouldn't waste your time by posting some stupid story. instead, I'm going to disucss what you can expect in the future. It won't be much since I'm due for the chair in a month, so this actually will be my last blog post. My brother David will take over the blog, just so you know.

In the future, I expect the team to still be good. Maybe better, but not likely. Alexei will most likely stay with the team for the next few years until his contract runs out and he's deported back to wherever he's from. Mathias will stay on the team for a while. Jessica and Cassidy will be here for a while as well. In a few years, they'll probably be the best players on the team. Kristen will probably stay for a year or two before going to some other country. As for the second and third line players, ah, who cares about them? They barely play anyway. As far as how good we play, I'm sure we won't be winning a tournament anytime soon. So we can forget about any type of celebration in the near fututre. Makes me wonder why we even try. Much less even think about being successful. So why have we tried the past few tournaments? Maybe Bilbo doesn't know what he's been doing and he's just a crazy idiot.

So we lost yesterday and will today, nothing new. I knew all along we'd lose in the Round of 16, even if we played an easy team. This will be the last Torisakia hockey game I'll ever see. So in honor of that, I want to award all of you with the Murvin Award. The Murvin Award is an honorary award you'll all recieve in the mail in honor of your gratitude to me and this blog. After 5 years of blogging, it's time for my life and this blog to end. I appreciate everything you've all done for me, and everything I've done for me, mostly me. Havl Defeats Torisakia in Shootout; Forces Game Three

Stalliongrad, the Equestrian States – In a must-win game for Havl's national hockey team, the defending World Cup champions held off a strong threat from 25th-ranked Torisakia to force game three. The closely-contested match saw even play from both teams that bled through an overtime period and spilled into a shootout. "At this level, there is so much extra pressure," said Havl team captain Justin Donndelinger, who scored in the shootout. "With our whole tournament on the line, you know you have to make the shot."

The second consecutive matchup between these two teams managed to keep the high-stakes drama of game one. Although both Havl and the Ice Birds are capable of high-scoring games, the focus on tight defense has produced two very close games that have gone beyond regulation time. "[Torisakia] is formiddable," said head coach Nicklas Lindberg. "There was an assumption that this would be an easy series for us, but they've proven to be a very good team." Once again, Diamond Park was full to capacity, but this time there was a notable Torisakian contingent behind the Ice Birds' bench.


State scored on Havl's second shootout attempt to seal the victory.

In the first period, Torisakia made it clear that they intended to end the series and move on to the next round. The Ice Birds outshot Havl ten to six, and winger Alexei Borodin scored the opening goal at 11:22 to give Torisakia an early lead. The defending champions were clearly uneasy being behind, and they continued to be outplayed for the first 20 minutes. "We're working on how to react [when the other team scores first]," said Donndelinger. "Obviously, we can't expect to score first every time, and it doesn't mean the game's over if we don't."

The second period saw a resurgence from Havl, including a waved-off goal from Jason State that came after a delayed whistle. "I hate that, but what are you going to do?" said State. "That's hockey." Goaltender Kevin Hautifi stifled Havl's offense, stopping the first eleven shots he faced. But with two seconds left in the period, Rufio Dellucci batted an airborne puck into the net to tie up the game. "It was just kind of bouncing, and I whacked it in," said Dellucci, who had been trying to redirect a shot from center Darryl Matousek and saw the golden opportunity.

In the third period, the game started to get chippy as both teams knew the importance of the outcome. Winger Lucas Gerstan and Andrei Petrov started a shoving match that nearly resulted in a bench-clearing brawl. Both players were handed five-minute major penalties. "They want to play, and they're all getting frustrated," said Coach Lindberg. "Obviously we don't need any players getting hurt or banned, so it's good it didn't devolve into a big dustup."

The 20-minute overtime played much like the third period; a lot of shots from both teams, and tight defense. The game marked the first shootout in this tournament for both teams. Havl's formidable shootout line, consisting of the famous "Firing Squad," took to the ice looking to force a decisive game three. Justin Donndelinger led with an old-school wristshot over Hautifi's blocker-side shoulder. Goaltender Davis Rich poked away a low shot from Kristen White to keep Havl in the lead. Jason State skated next and slipped a toe-dragged puck past an outstretched Hautifi to win the game. "It's the most exciting play in hockey," said a beaming State after the game.

With the win, Havl evens best-of-three series 1-1, forcing a must-win game three.. Coverage of World Cup of Hockey XXI continues on HTVM Sunday evening as Havl faces 25th-ranked Torisakia live from Stalliongrad for game three of the Round of 16.

After taking off with the opening victory against Gyatso Kai, the Vilita & Turori Ice Cat things suffered defeat in the second leg of their best-of three series.

Entering the series as severe underdogs unlikely to advance even as far as they already had, the Ice Cats were drawing the eyes of media sources wondering how long their run could continue.

Victory over Gyatso-Kai appeared to signal the Ice Cats as a contender but Gyatso-Kai powered back with a victory of their own, setting up a winner-takes-all third and final match between the two teams to decide who would qualify for the Quarter-Final stage.

Vilita & Turori will likely already be taking pride from their performance, feeling confident that they can ride the momentum of some strong victories and powerful displays to a successful campaign once the Atlantian Oceania regional competition kicks off.

However, having come so far, so far, the players are unlikely to simply roll over and be content with what they have achieved, with further advancement just fingertips away at the end of the third match.

Alikki-Corra Aye-Aye's goalkeeper Tommy Finn has been good for the Ice Cats, but not great - conceding 5 goals to Gyatso-Kai in the previous match and with a relatively high goals against average in the knockout phase thus far.

However, Ice Cat things head coach Avalan Marcraw has not shown any indication of switching to either Koyo Apen or Fiko Oreta for the crucial third match. While Apen and Oreta backstop the top two teams in the Vilitan League - the Turoki Islanders and Yeaddin HC, Marcraw intends to stick with the internationally experienced Finn throughout the competition - should the Ice Cats manage to take down Gyatso-Kai and qualify for the Quarter Final stage.

Rivalry renewed again for the umpteenth time!

Once again Qazox and Plutoni meet in the World Cup of Hockey. There have been many words written in the past about these two teams, and if you find those words, read 'em now. We're too lazy to rehash them right now, so basically just swap out any references that are dated for current references, and that'll do for a preview.

Experts at the Journal of Useless Research talk out the pros and cons of potential captains for the national team in its next tournament.

Tord Lukel:
Pros: Has experience working under the system of Murtel Hairen, who is new and might be attemping to make a long-term impact on the team.
Cons: Draws a few too many fouls to be really trusted.

Kayra Huse:
Pros: A very experienced player who lots of people can defer to.
Cons: Too old to be invited back.

Greg Dimuse:
Pros: Would give Super Six fans a reason to tune in.
Cons: Way way way too old. How is he still even here?
(staff writers suggest: no one actually remembers the CPdO ending so really, it could be whenever we want; is in fact a super-subtle android with inhuman strength; "like steroids, dude"; has been replaced by a distant cousin of the same name who honors his relative by wearing the same uniform number)

Kevin Snodly:
Pros: A fan favorite, can score a hat trick on occasion. Would be a very popular choice among his loyal followers.
Cons: Also kind of old, more inportantly, from Char, which has a few disgruntled separatists and might not appeal to people who want a more central Plutonian choice.

James Kassion
Pros: More charismatic than a lot of the options. I'm sure there's precedent somewhere.
Cons: Is a goalie, you moron.

Somebody new from the Northern Pinnacles:
Pros: A fresh face could be just what the team needs, and the Pinnacles tend to rotate in and out quickly.
Cons: The team isn't even that good, so who's to say they'll contribute anyone remotely captain-worthy?

Nobody, because we're being dumb and once again forget to pick one:

Pros: This is probably the most likely option.

Hrynyk Return Too Little Too Late

The Turtles split their first six games with three wins and three losses under the guidance of assistant coach Jason Marks. Marks pursued a controversial neutral strategy that saw Sel Appa score more goals in one game than the entire qualification contest 3 cups ago. Head coach Jan Hrynyk was suffering from bronchitis and pneumonia before finally being cleared to go to the sevenh game against the Free Swiss States. He immediately ordered a strong defensive strategy, but the Turtles still managed to score four goals as the Swiss defense collapsed. Sel Appa picked up another win while hosting Thatius, and appeared poised to clinch a wild card spot. But then the watertight defense kicked in and the team couldnt score against Levivania despite keeping the opponent blank. Sel Appa earned a point, which is better than none, but two more wouldve ensured a spot in the playoffs. After that, Sel Appa fell by a goal to group leader Polkopia, knocking them fully out of contention.

Despite the failure to qualify for the playoffs, Sel Appa earned third place in the group and was the first team outside the wild card cutoff. Reviews overall have been mixed to positive with Stewart Baron saying "We have a solid team that just needs more international exposure. You cant always be a barnstormer on your first cup and considering the team has been out for a few years, and probably rusted, this is a great result. I have a lot of optimism about the next cup." The return of Hrynyk was widely cheered and the popular coach earned a better percentage record, altho he has a few critics who preferred to gamble with the strategy pursued by Marks. Hrynyk himself was "glad to be back. Yes, its been a good run. I wish I could have had more than four games, but so it is. I am happy with the results we have and look forward to the next cup."

During the interim period, Sel Appa has much to consider in reevaluating its team, which remained the same from the last cup trial. General Manager Jacques Antoine noted "We have to take a look at our players and make some changes. I like the strategy pursued by Hrynyk, but he needs better players for it. We are definitely going to look into this for next time." Meanwhile, disappointed Sel Appans rub each others backs in comfort and hope for next time.

The game had ended, the final goal made five minutes prior, and the men of the Gyatso-kai National Ice Hockey Team were now seated in the Home Locker Room awaiting the arrival of Head Coach Kad Skirata; who had stepped off the line to grant AHL Tonight an interview. After a 5-2 victory --- another pair of goals for Ishii, a single goal and two assists for the young Skirata, and even a goal from Ikeda Kuruk --- Skirata was sure the Head Coach would have plenty to talk about with Aaron Yitsune, Tonraq Soma, and of course... the lovely and charming Trương Mai.

Kal Skirata, the son of the Head Coach and one of Gyatso-kai's greatest young players, found himself sitting infront of his soon-to-be-cleared locker; they had to ship out to the next venue to face off against the winner of the Equestrian States-Northern SUnrise Islands series. Tied at one each, Skirata didn't know who they were facing off against, and frankly, he didn't care.

The other two series were more interesting...

Torisakia had managed to draw Havl twice in regulation; with one game going in favour of the Ice Birds in Overtime, and the other pulled into a silenced shootout with the Havlian team making the horns blare twice, tonights game was really anybody's to claim. He hoped Torisakia would claim victory, if for nothing more than to see Havl silenced: Skirata never liked the repeat Cup winner scheme many tournaments faced, but he knew they were a part of the game.

The Plutoni-Qazox series would surely be interesting, considering both teams had clinched their respective series and dashing the hopes of two lucky teams; the Aquitayne team had surprised the world, coming into the Playoffs unranked and atop their group, however, they faced the Plutonian team and found nothing but despair at the end of their dreams. Qazox brought Thrilledge to their knees, first an astonishing 5-1 opener, followed by a thrilling 3-1 victory to end the series and send the Thrilledgians home. The highlight reel was surely entertaining to say the least.

The favourite rival of the Ice Bisons, the Mapletish Minnows, were doing quite well for themselves; they had finally managed to overtake the Ice Bisons in world rankings, and here they were going into the Quaterfinals against Polkopia. After a rather bland start to their tournament, the Minnows came out of Group Six 5-3-2 and had to fight into the Playoffs through the Round of 24 against Vaugania. With a 4-2 victory, the Minnows swam into the Playoffs to stare down the Soviet Canuckistani team; a perennial entrant into the World Cup, Skirata had never faced off against the team before, and everything he knew about them came from highlight films. However, based off of their performance against Mapletish, he was a little worrisome over who would emerge victorious in the Quaterfinals: The last game between Mapletish and Soviet Canuckistan had ended before the second intermission, and Kal'buir had put the score up right before the start of the third period. 2-1 was the Mapletish victory, and seeing them win the series 2-1 made Skirata a little more hopeful for an eventual face-off with the Minnows.

That's if we make it past the next round...

The doors opened to the Locker Room, with Head Coach Skirata walking through. The room soon silenced itself, each man standing quickly. Skirata stood in the middle of the room, a brief tap to his chest relaxed the men, and he turned to the dry-erase board on the back wall. Walking towards it, each man took a seat yet still managed to keep an eye on the board. Skirata picked up the red marker, and looked to the scores.

First, Equestrian States versus Northern Sunrise Island... A long red line through Equestrain States.

Damn... We face NSI, thought the younger Skirata as he looked to the next pair.

Next Mowhawk Clans versus Byfugland... Don't really care either way... oh, Mohawk went down 2-1.

Polkopia and Valanora... What? The Calcuttas were knocked out?

Havl and Torisakia? Please let the Ice Birds emerge... What?! Havl took the win?

"The last game ended moments before I came in," spoke Kad'buir as he turned back towards the men. "The Ice Birds brought the game six-all in the third, but could not win the Overtime and the Shootout was decided by a lone goal for Havl."

"With the host nation faltering, we will be going up against the Northern Sunrise Islands of Esportiva, with the venue being the Royal Coliseum in Canterlot. Only slightly smaller than HarmonyLink, yet still will be home to almost 66,000 fans. We will be putting on quite the show."

Skirata motioned to one of his assistant coaches and gave a light sigh. "Seeing as it is late, we will do the debriefing tomorrow morning. 0700 hours. Breakfast, meeting, morning skate. Rest up for the night game, and then make it to Canterlot for the game against NSI. On your seats in the bus, you will find the dossiers about the Northern Sunrise Islands... Read it at your leisure."

As Kad'buir turned to leave, the younger Skirata reached for his phone, and typed out a quick message to the person he usually spoke to nowadays.

Havl Shootout Eliminates Torisakia

Stalliongrad, the Equestrian States – It was a familiar scene at Diamond Park on Sunday evening as 25th-ranked Torisakia and the defending World Cup of Hockey champions Havl prepared for another shootout to determine which team would advance to the quarterfinals. "They call it the 'greatest play in hockey,' but it's a crummy way to determine a playoff game," said Havl defenseman Brian Beierle. While it remains a controversial aspect of the tournament, both teams came prepared for the shootout. "It's been an incredibly close series," said Havl head coach Nicklas Lindberg. "We haven't seen a game end in regulation. We won the shootout yesterday, but I'm sure [Torisakia] was running shootout drills all day today, like we have."

The best-of-three matchup between Havl and the Ice Birds has been one of the most competitive in this tournament. All three games saw extra periods, including consecutive trips to the one-on-one shootout to determine the winner. In both cases, Havl's sharpshooters proved effective. "We train for shootouts, especially for the World Cup," said goaltender Davis Rich, who allowed a series-high six goals in regulation. "In the HHL, we just have overtime after overtime after overtime in the playoffs."

Torisakia took an early lead in the third period with goals from Jessica Holbrook, Lyndsey Reed, and Kristen White. However, the defending champions kept pace as Gilles Lecompte and Darryl Matousek notched goals for Havl. It was clear that neither team was interested in the defense-heavy strategy that had dominated the first two games. "We came out strong, and they came out stronger," said captain Justin Donndelinger. "You know, we always pride ourselves on strong defense, but we can score and score more when we need to. And today we needed to."

The second period saw Havl strike back with goals from Guy Allender, Chris Dyer and Andrei Petrov. Torisakia evened the score to five-all with goals from Alexei Borodin and Forrest Butler. For every Havl goal, there was a response from Torisakia. "It was like siblings trying to one-up each other" said Beierle. "'Anything you can do, I can do better.'" In the third period, defenseman Tomas Holicek scored his first goal of the tournament in what looked to be the game-winning goal with just five minutes left. But Holbrook responded with an equalizer less than a minute later, her second goal of the game.

The 20-minute overtime saw a return to defensive prowess as both teams slowed the pace and waited for high-percentage opportunities. The inevitable shootout saw Havl put its "Firing Squad" line out; Donndelinger, Jason State, and Lecompte. Donndelinger skated first and nearly beat an outstretched Kevin Hautifi. Jason State, known for his ability to play the puck well in the crease, surprised Hautifi with a wrist shot from ten feet out that found the back of the net. After Lecompte's failed attempt, the pressure was on Rich to stop Holbrook, who was having a two-goal game. "Shots were going in for her," said Rich. Holbrook skated across the crease before firing a high backhander that Rich smothered at chest level. "Pure relief," said Rich, referring to the save.

With the win, Havl enters the Quarterfinals against 9th-ranked Byfugland. When Havl last faced the Jets in the 19th World Cup of Hockey, Byfugland won the best-of-three Round of 16 matchup 2-1. Soviet Canuckistan 1–2 Mapletish, Mapletish wins series 2-1.

Hello everybody this is the Sour Kind or now you can call me Tish, well that's my new nickname. So it's good news for the Minnows, a 2-1 win over Soviet Canuckistan and they have now made it to the quarter finals after winning the series 2-1. Well it was not the best of matches but it was an important match for the Minnows. Well today I have invited Jakob Raymundo and yes he is the previous guy there in the previous commentary. So what do you think about the previous match between the two?

Well I think, the Minnows have done pretty well all through the campaign despite going through some perks in the campaign. The defence has always been shaky all this while, conceding first in the previous match in the first period. For the entire of the second period, the Minnows remained goalless but the Minnows managed to put 2 goals back in the third period against an equally determined Cancukistan team. Determination was the key in the match and there it goes a victory to be happy about.

Who's the outstanding player in the previous match? Any suggestions for the match?

An outstanding player for the match? I think it is Josef Reginar, defensive pair one for line one, he is outstanding in the previous match, putting on excellent defending in the match, intercepting much of their opponents' passes and successfully putting out most of the counterattacking chances.

Haha, yeah, it is that awesome there. Defensively, the Minnows have certainly improved quite a bit and offensively, they are starting to take their chances, I hope. This match has certainly brought out what the Minnows can do here and what they are good at, getting the goals and being comback heroes.

Who do we expect from the next match series then?

Pretty interestingly, the Minnows are the lowest seeded team in the quarter finals, seeded as the 18th seed. Although they are just one behind 17th seeded Northern Sunrise Islands, there's no doubt that the experience and quality of the Minnows squad would serve the interesting fixture against 6th seed Polkopia well. Polkopia has an interesting campaign and are going on well after a shock win over Valanora in the shootout and winning the series 2-1. I was more of expecting a Valanora challenge where the Minnows would be able to renew rivalries with the Valanorains who were just superior over Mapletish in the association football stage.

Well certainly, the Ice Bisons, where also on hand to the quarter-finals, facing Northern Sunrise Islands. This looks interesting nonetheless, and a Ice-Bisions and Minnows face off would be a pretty interesting game to look forward to. But we should look at the task at hand, a game in the Derby Park could certainly spice things up a bit.

Exactly, all we can hope for is a quick victory over the first two game series and our players could get a rest over when the third match series is played. It would certainly do the players well and better prepare for the semi-finals. My prediction would be an obvious 2-0 win over Polkopia over the first two series.

I'm looking for the Minnows to get off to a slow start in the first match series, and then coming back into the second match series for a 1-1 to the series before accomplishing a 2-1 feat over Polkopia and moving onto the semi-finals.

Polkopia to Move on to Quarterfinals

In a heated game between two determined and skilled teams, Polkopia turned out victorious in a shootout, in which Polkopia was able to score three goals, and their opponents, the Vanorian team, only two. Before the shootout, both teams had managed to score three goals, and had not scored any additional goals in overtime, hence the final result being determined from a shootout. This is the first game that the Polkopian had to play that has ended in a penalty shootout, and fortunately for the Polkopians, their first shootout turned out to be a much-needed victory for the team.

The first goal of the night was scored by none other than Ivan Nuev, who, with the support of Ott Yarlov and Viktor Kultz, was able to score, despite the disappointing performance he put on the previous night. It is fair to say that the young defender has redeemed himself. The next two goals were scored in the second period by Yarlov and Shotov respectively, giving Polkopia the lead in the end of the second period. It was in the third period that the Vanorian team was able to equalize the score in an outstanding goal, where goalie Yuri Sviatoslavich was unable to react in time. Despite this, Hemmingway, Shotov, and Yarlov were all able to give Polkopia the win in the shootout against the Vanorian team.

"We knew we had to win. They knew they had to win. I think everyone on the rink played their hearts out that night!" Said Fernando Hemmingway, a Polkopian offender, who is credited with two assists for that game. "I don't think there wasn't one soul out there who didn't want to move on to the quarterfinals." Ivan Nuev also had some input on the subject at hand. "This is the first time that Polkopia has made it to the quarterfinals. This is the dream team. I'm so happy that I had the privilege to play alongside such great teammates!"

Coach Yuri Kamakasov had little criticism of the team, unlike the previous night, and proceeded to acknowledge each individual's personal contributions to the team, from Roman Shotov's goals, to Igot Sputnov's moral support for the team. In the end, the team left the rink in a positive state of mind, but also even more determined to play the team from Mapletish, who is currently ranked 4th in the world.

Well, I am just a netminder; standing at one end of the ice and just waiting for the opponent to come at me.

In the first period, you faced eight shots on goal, and managed to prevent any goals. How did you feel the Stars handled the first period?

They performed well, however, I was very on my game tonight; very focused, ready to face any threat.

With the first goal after twelve seconds, it was a long drought before Hakoda would score again; the game remained tied from the twelve-fifteen mark of the first period all the way to the seventeenth minute of the third period.
