Second Rushmori Games, Zube | RP/results (closed)

This is the RP thread for the Second Rushmori Games, staged in the Kytlerian capital of Zube. Results will also be posted in this thread.

A full schedule of events will be posted later. The plan is for competition to run from Tuesday 8 October to Sunday 20 October, with daily scorination.

RP cutoffs will be at approximately 1830 UTC/1930 BST in most circumstances. There are several days where this is liable to change, including the first day of competition on Tuesday 8 October.

RP bonus will be based on your best RP and your most recent RP as well as your overall RP across the whole Games. Furthermore, as announced in the signup thread (and incorporated into the spreadsheet therein), a Min-Max Avoidance Bonus is added to the RP bonus, as an incentive to reduce minmaxing.

Get RPing. Any kind of RP is good, unusual ones perhaps better. Make this fortnight fly.

T-1

It was the evening before the opening ceremony. The venues across Zube had been prepared, in all their variety - Donaldson Park, perhaps to be Zube Olympic Park in a few years from now, had been visually transformed, with Rushmori-coloured Z logos everywhere and an array of signage in the same Conduit font family. One thing this fortnight wouldn't lack was a visual identity.

The Zs were even present in the most improbable of locations around 4km south of Donaldson Park. Eastpoint Lanes, the largest tenpin bowling alley in the country with 38 lanes, has been transformed in recent weeks. A series of lanes have been closed off and equipped ready for international competition - possibly the highest standard of competition in the multiverse at this point. The competition has been extended from the Dreyfil Games, with the single-game format replaced by a six-game ranking round with the top four qualifying for knockout matches in both individual and team competitions. Eastpoint Lanes manager Jeffrey Barker admits it has been "a shock" to be hosting the competition.

"I never imagined that international competition would come here, I hardly knew that such a thing existed," said Barker. "93% of our visitors are what we call casual players, typically with families or groups of teenagers, young men, sometimes women, who just come for a good time and maybe they'll get excited over a strike or scoring 100. We get competitive players, but - well, we've tracked scores over five years here, and we've never had a 300 in all that time, the lanes record is 290 - in fact, that was set by Boris Warburton, who's competing here. But generally, this is not a sport that's done competitively at the moment in this country."

Thomas Robertson, of Aels, is the strong favourite to win gold in the men's competition, though the women's may be very wide open, with Kytlerian hopes in particular from Hannah Burke. "She trains here quite a bit, especially in the last few months since it was confirmed we'd be hosting the bowling for the Games. I think the Kytlerians are the strongest team, from what I'm hearing, in the women's event, and Burke is looking very good, her scores have been improving, I've been keeping the odd peek at that. Hard not to, with the elite folks - I'm a patriot, you know, and seeing this is heartening."

T-0

The TV had been filled with nothing else all morning. Apparently, not all of the athletes for the Rushmori Games had made it to Zube in time. Nor were they ever going to. Ostensibly, it was because there were travel problems - Varn separatist groups at Zube International Airport caused significant disruption by barricading Terminal 1, causing enough security staff and police officers to be taken from usual duties to arrest them that planes were left stranded on the runway for some considerable time, for a start - but that couldn't be an excuse. This is a city set to co-host the Olympics one day, and that's an order of magnitude bigger than this! How can this be?

The Margaret Institute boffins knew what was happening. Possibly.

"THE TIME DILATION HAS CHANGED IN WESTERN RUSHMORE! IT'S BROKEN! IT'S BROKEN!"

"We can fix this..."

"NO WE CAN'T! WE DON'T CONTROL IT THERE!"

"Dings, Dings... calm down. Phone the Bartewick Institute of Time, we got messages wired from them saying they're dealing with a few problems. A week should do it. That's all."

"But they can't go backwards, it's time DILATION not time TRAVEL!"

"We... we could slow our time passage a bundle? That'll do it. We'll need to get it right to make sure the day/night cycle is recalibrated, but that should be OK."

"Let's do it."

OOC: this is a convoluted way of saying that because of continuing problems with my new build desktop, I'm going to be putting an SSD in the laptop this weekend instead. Because that going wrong would have completely prevented me from hosting the Games - and there's other RL stuff going on that I'd rather not tell everyone on here - I'm delaying the start another week, until Tuesday 15 October. This also means the opening week is out of the way of the WC, which will hopefully lead to much better RPing.

Day 1 will be scorinated tomorrow evening UK. I want to make sure the thread is clearly present for everyone to RP with more than 24 hours to spare, plus I've still been having technical difficulties.

The opening ceremony saw almost 56,000 people at a sell-out Zube National Stadium witness scenes of pointless choreography, overblown symphonic music, and ridiculous costumes.

Because what opening ceremony doesn't?

There was the odd anti-tax/Varn separatist protestor outside, because that's how those Tea Party-esque folks roll. But no disruption.

Here's your disruption. DAY 1 CUTOFF.

The Sports Gazette
Rushmori Games Special

For only the second time in the history of Eastfield Lodge, a delegation of athletes is going to be sent to a regional olympiad-style championship. Not many of you will actually remember the first time we sent a delegation, being well over 30 or so years ago in the now defunct region known as The New Empire of Gallifrey, but since the move to Rushmore, the sporting arm of the government has seen fit to grant more sports funding to more and more areas. And for the athletes who have been training and taking part only in local and national level competitions, this is their first chance since the new policy to star on the international stage.

And that international stage? The Second Rushmori Games, hosted this time in Zube, in The Kytler Peninsulae. It is a rather small first time delegation, given the limit of 250 entrants; the Eastfield Lodge Olympic Association deciding to send just 86 entrants this time around, stating that "it was just feeling for the level of competition that would be put on". This front page is just a summary, as the rest of the pull-out will be looking at all the events, the favourites and especially, profiles of some of the athletes from the Imperial Commonwealth who will be taking part.

Obviously, it's all about the medals. Who can get the most gold, silver and bronze medals, and which delegation will top at the end of proceedings. Obviously, that won't be us, as we've only put in 86 entries, and there are several countries entering the maximum 250 entrants, so they will get a lot of the medals. That doesn't matter much however, because if we can do well for ourselves, we can be proud of that. So, what events are we looking to do well in, then?

Aquatics: in the pool, we have the one main prospect for a gold medal. Umar Tariq will be looking to get as many medals as possible, taking part in most of the shorter distance races. There will be stiff competition though, as there are several good swimmers from other nations taking to the pool. Another one to root for is Jaber Hakmi, who will be looking to pull out some brilliant performances to sneak a medal of his own.

Athletics: On the track, Jermaine Gonsalves is a good prospect for a medal in the long distance track events, with his speciality in the 10 km race. In the marathon, Ali Abdis, the current holder of the national record in the men's marathon, will be looking for a medal to finish high up in this very competitive order. In the shorter events, Ali's brother Machrus is looking an outside contender for a medal in the 110m Hurdles. For the women, Sobhia Nassar, running in the marathon, is another outside contender. On the field, Ali Pettreson looks one of the favourites to take home the gold in the Men's Javelin Throw, while Isabella Aguiar

Cycling: Given the lack of track cycling athletes, we only have road cyclists in this delegation, which consists of the road race and time trials for both men and women. And with so few athletes, our best hope for a medal Hadia Bashir, who'll be looking to get the bronze for her time trial.

Other individual events: The remaining individual events that have our athletes in them are Archery and the Triathlon. Faisal Saeed is looking like a good contender for at least a bronze medal, and the men's team could be good enough to get the bronze. As for the women, Victoria Al-Khaabi is looking like one of the favourites for the gold medal, and the women's team will be looking to fight for a medal as well. In the triathlon, Brynjar Gunnarsson is an outside contender for a medal in the men's, whilst Holly Davidson looks a good candidate for a medal in the women's.

Other team events: Women's Softball, men's and women's Futsal, Men's Rugby Sevens and Men's Volleyball are the remaining team events we have entrants for. As for contenders, we are looking good for a medal in Softball, and we have an outside chance in Men's Futsal, whilst the women are strong contenders for a gold medal. We have little chance of a medal in Rugby Sevens, but a slightly higher one for the Volleyball.

So, only time will tell who will fly and who will flop in the events. Will favourites fail to live up to expectations and the underdogs surprise everyone, or will the prior view of each competitor's strength shine through? Who knows, but this will certainly be an entertaining few weeks in Zube. The first day of many will see several of our athletes in action, as Umar Tariq will be in the heats for both the 100m backstroke and breaststroke, with Jaber Hakmi and Abdul Rauf in the backstroke and breaststroke respectively and Adeela Raheel will be taking part in the women's 100m butterfly heats. Outside the pool, we'll see the first matchday of the men's futsal and the pool phase of women's softball.

Go inside for further informations on the games, but we at The Gazette wish all our proud athletes the best of luck, and we hope you'll join us in doing so.

Judo Aquilliano?

Two of the top students at Santiago Calderón's Academia Nueva Judo in Torreón have already secured Aquillian's first medals at the Rushmori Games in Zube. Using Calderón's somewhat unorthodox, adaptive style -- derived from Kodokan judo -- both Marcelo Barranquilla and Theresa Delgado progressed to the semi finals.

Delgado lost a close match by golden score after the home crowd favourite and eventual gold medallist Lily Fallon scored a yuko. Fallon's hip-shift caught Delgado by surprise, and finally brought her down onto her side, after a tense matchup in which neither judoka had been able to establish dominance.

Despite the setback, Delgado rallied to pick up a quick victory over Cira Marciel by ippon within two minutes. Her attempted uki goshi didn't come off completely, but she was able to transition swiftly, and smoothly into juji-gatame to secure victory.

Marcelo Barranquilla was unfortunate to lose his semi final to Wim de Winter by virtue of hantei, after a very closely fought match. Neither was able to score waza-ari, with both men only managing to score two yuko. Barranquilla was also able to fight back however, earning a bronze medal after beating Blas Felipe with ippon via harai goshi.

Some commenters have noticed the subtle variations in technique displayed by Calderón's students so far, particularly by Delgado. Her technical strengths have allegedly seen her targeted by several Osarian gyms, who wish to have her compete in the illustrious Osarian Combat Federation. The twenty-three year old is reluctant to move to the Atlantian Oceania nation, however, insisting that she would rather remain at amateur level and continue developing her technique. "Calderón-sensei is a great teacher and I feel like there is still a lot to learn from him." She told us. "I made a few mistakes against Fallon, so I can still improve a lot. Maybe after the next Rushmori Games, if I come home with the gold, I'll think about it."

Calderón has shied away from suggestions he is developing the next evolution of judo form -- Judo Aquilliano, as some have jokingly named it -- instead insisting that he is simply "opening doors to possibilities" and letting his students walk through them. "I never taught Theresa to transition from uki goshi to juji-gatame, she came up with that herself." He explains. "I have shown her the techniques separately, and I have explained when they can be useful. She made the math work in her own mind."

The last of Calderón's students in Zube, Gloria Machado, will take to the mat tomorrow, aiming to be Aquillian's first gold medallist of the games. He is confident she can do it. "Gloria is perhaps my best student. Theresa is excellent, but she will tell you herself that she sometimes makes small errors. Marcelo is outstanding for somebody who is only training in judo for three years, but Gloria is above them both." Calderón gushes. "I have trained her since she was eight years old, and she is always improving. Every day, something new. Something better."

Machado herself is quiet on the issue, not committing anything regarding her expectations or hopes. She missed the last national championships through injury, but returned to competition three months ago with style. A comprehensive victory over reigning national 52kg champion, Sylvia Thompson, at the regional championships in Genesia underlined her strength. Thompson herself conceded that Machado should represent the nation in Zube. "She's better than me at the moment. I can't dispute that." Thompson conceded, after the defeat. "You don't see successful foot throws very often in high level contests. Not ones that result in ippon anyway."

It has not gone unnoticed that the Judo events at this year's games don't appear to be very high level in general, which is a little disappointing for our stars. Not many judoka have arrived in Zube in each weight division, meaning the depth of competition is pretty shallow. That doesn't mean that there won't be plenty of challenge, though. As both Delgado and Barranquilla found out, there are high level opponents to overcome in the games, and it appears as though Taeshani judoka Amanda Lloris will be the biggest threat to Machado's quest for gold. Like a true champion, she is well aware of this, but refuses to look beyond any possible opponent. "I've tried to get film on all of them." She admits, before adding somewhat confidently, "Just in case." Sounds like fighting talk.
President: Horace Daley | Population: ~24 million | Capital: Genesia, Centrale

A moderately conservative, somewhat-religious nation with a lingering resentment for Osarius, their former colonial oppressors.
If you want a RL reference point, this nation is supposed to be a cultural, social and political mélange of Mexico and Jamaica.

I will sometimes RP in an approximation of Jamaican Patois. Apologies in advance ;)

Saugeais At The Second Rushmore Games

Lower Turnouts, Omitted Athletes, and First Day Jitters

It's not hard to find out that whenever an international competition is taking place and it has even one Saugeain participating, more often than not you'll find the Saugeain population concerned over them. With the Cup of Harmony and Rugby League World Cups drawing most of the national attention, it seems weird that a regional event like the Second Rushmore Games would be pushed off to the wayside. But then again, when the Games draw exactly half of the nations total from the first edition (34 in the first, 17 here in the second), it is apparent what the media and the public will prioritize over everything else.

That doesn't faze the athletes, though, as they relish the chance to win regardless. "We are still going up against Sargossa, Aels, and Eura to name a few," said Cammie Oliver, gold medal winner in judo at the 8th Olympics. "So while there are fewer nations entered in, the level of skill among the competitors is as great, if not greater, than what it was before." "I just want to go out and swim for gold, doesn't matter against who or how much," said butterfly stroke specialist Dezi Macy. With the athletes seemingly in high spirits, that should translate to some high quality performances over the next week or so.

However, the delegation got off to a rocky start on opening day. Right out of the gate, Jamie Saunders will be going home after an overwhelming loss to Aquillian Theresa Delgado in the Women's 48kg division of judo. Not even a minute into the 3 minute match, Delgado launched into a fierce battle of position, causing Lamie to lose her balance. Delgado used that to her advantage, flipping Jamie decisively to the ground for the ippon and the match.

In the pool, Damion Winfield cam out flat in the semifinals of the Men's 100m backstroke, finishing in 11th place with a time of 55.87 seconds, a little more than a half second off the cutoff. Something happened with Saugeais' entry list, either it wasn't filed in time or the organizers lost it among other papers, but the result cost Windsor Lacy, Patrice Mallory, Astrid Page, Makenna Gully, Marzena Ryder, Arianne Deniau, Huguette Borde, and Romane Foss at a chance at medals. The Saugeain Aquatics Federation was furious after the mixup and, while nothing can be done about the first day's events and medal count, hope that they can rectify any other missing names that were submitted.

In a long, drawn out battle, the Saugeain Women's volleyball team were defeated by the hosts Kytler Peninsulae in 5 sets. The Saugeais girls took a 2 sets to 1 lead after successive runs of aces from Kiley Audley and Trecia Hendry (4 each), and looked to have the momentum going for the rest of the match. But a back and forth fourth set that needed extra points to decide the outcome saw the Saugeain team visibly more exhausted then the hosts. They fought valiantly in the final set, but just didn't have enough to push past the walls Kytler Peninsulae constantly put up. The women need to win out if they have hopes of advancing.

And finally, some good news out of the day, the Saugeain baseball team took their first group match against Mangolana by the final of 6-4. Rodger Mason, the young right hander from Bugny, pitched 7 strong innings, only surrendering 2 runs on 6 hits and a walk, while striking out 8. Offensively, third baseman Alf Carpenter provided the majority of the momentum for Saugeais, going 3 for 5 with two doubles and driving in two runs, one in the second and one in the fourth. Left fielder Nicholas Farnham recorded a solo homerun in the 6th inning while Dominick Grey batted in Marlowe Brasher, who doubled previously, in the 6th as well to give Saugeais all the runs they needed. Rodger's Bugny teammate Solomon Green came on in the 8th to hold the lead with a strikeout to his name, while closer Montgomery Dyer needed just 10 pitches to retire the side and give Saugeais the win.

International Edition - Sport

We’re Better Than You

Blanco Borrayo reports from Zube;

A sentiment we rarely tire of mentioning. But these golden eras come around so rarely so forgive us for basking in the success for a just little while. For the Sargossan sporting programmes, with the possible exception of our actual national sport, are bearing some serious fruit. Fresh from a record medal haul from the recent Olympics in Liventia, and arriving at the Second Rushmori Games having topped the medal table in the inaugural event, the men and women of the Sargossan delegation can feel a certain amount of excitement ahead of the days to come.

True to form, it wasn’t too long before attention turned to the pool where a whole host of Sargossan medal hopes will be featuring throughout the tournament. Marc Sarasola was the main draw in the water on day one, and the proud holder of four Olympic medals eased himself into the finals of both the 100m Backstroke and Breaststroke and must be considered a serious contender for gold in both. With no Mytanars to contend with Sargossa has become a massive favourite in the pool and Miguel Ángel Luna got the nation off the mark with a silver in the 400m Freestyle, hopefully exorcising a few of the Freestyle demons that were present in Liventia. The fans didn’t have to wait much longer for the first gold either, as reigning Rushmori champion Candela De Santo successfully defended her title in the 100 Butterfly. It was a good night all round for De Santo who also swan the lead leg of the 4 x 100m Free and joined in the celebrations as Lea Losada brought the team home, two seconds clear of their nearest challengers.

Most pundits speculate that the main hurdles to another dominant Sargossan showing at the Rushmori Games will come from either the hosts or the Eurans. So Sargossa’s win over Eura in the first group match of the Women’s Softball is hopefully a sign of things to come. Shame that no one back home is aware we even have a women’s softball team. The Men’s 2 – 0 win over former hosts Aels in the opening match of the Futsal was an altogether more appreciated event.

Judo can never be accused of being a particular favourite over there in our exotic archipelago but, as happens at these multi-sport events, for an hour or so everyone became a sudden expert. And how close those armchair Judokas were to seeing an actual medal, both Cira Marciel and Blas Felipe finishing in agonising fourth places in their respective events. There were no such issues for Tadeo Terrones who took a silver from the Weightlifting, albeit one he had to share with a dastardly Euran. Although the main story from the Weights was the curious case of Miranda Blokland, the impressive Kytlerian who hoped to make inroads into the Women’s 48kg category. Unfortunately for Miranda it was a category the hosting committee had overlooked entirely.

So the opening day of the Second Rushmori Games continued in much the same vein as the final day of the First Games in Aels, with Sargossa topping the medals charts with two of gold and two of silver. Which is nice.

Rushmori Games Round-Up: Day 1

First day of the fortnight of sporting excellence gone in Zube, and already we have seven sets of medals given out, as the few numbers of entrants (only 17 Olympic Committees actually entered these second games, down half from the first games, which we weren't at) meant that events could be done quickly, or in the case of one event, not held at all. Here's a round-up of the day's action, where we'll first focus on the events which our athletes took part in before looking further afield.

In the pool, there were six events, three each for men and women, and the three scheduled finals became four as the women's 100m butterfly only had 8 competitors, removing the need for heats. And so came the first medal event that Eastfield Lodge would be fighting for, all our hopes resting on Adeela Raheel, a woman who is a very versatile swimmer, one is pretty strong at all strokes, even if she wasn't the fastest. With all the events she's entered for, we can hope that she would sneak a bronze, if not better, in at least one of them. But today, she swam well, but could only finish 6th out of 8 swimmers in the final. However, she can take heart from the fact that she was just five hundredths of a second off the bronze medal pace, and a further 0.03 seconds from silver. Sargossa's Candela De Santo simply monstered this event, finishing over 8 tenths of a second clear; a clearance which, over 100m, is frankly embarrassing. Elsewhen in the pool, medal hopeful Umar Tariq, Jaber Hakmi and Abdul Rauf all featured. In the Men's 100m backstroke, Umar Tariq clearly stated his intention of challenging for the gold, surprisingly finishing in second in the heats just 0.03 behind Sargossa's Victorio Solana, in a stroke that isn't near his best, and 0.92 seconds clear of his third placed compatriot Marc Sarasola. This final will be one to watch tomorrow. Also starring in it will be Jaber Hakmi, who finished over a second behind the leader, but will be looking to pull out a brilliant performance to take the bronze, being only 0.07 seconds off Sarasola. Umar Tariq also featured in the Men's 100m breaststroke, on paper his best stroke, taking fourth in the heats, but with some work to do to catch the early leaders, with a difference of 0.24 seconds to third. However, Abdul Rauf failed to find his form, and after a bad dive he just couldn't keep up and as a result was eliminated in the heats.

Outside the pool, Lodgertian action saw the women's softball and the men's futsal teams starring today in their first matches of the pool phase. Apologies to all you softball fans out there, the few of you that are there, but everybody at this paper has a rather rudimentary understanding of softball, what with rounders being a much more popular sport and all. Still, we can tell you that the women's softball team beat the team from Dixhuitiles, who should be one of the favourites for the gold medal, 2-1, with a spectacular home run from Phoebe Fevison the highlight of what was a rather defensive game. Going over to the Futsal, and the men in their first matchday beat the hosts The Kytler Peninsulae 3-1, and thus topping the group with Sargossa and Aels in it. The first two goals came in the last five minutes of the first half, the first one a neat move with Roman Qwivotic backheeling a clearance into Thomas Graham's path, and the one-time volley left the Kytler keeper stranded. The second was a well taken penalty from Graham, after a Kytler player was deemed to touch the ball with his hand as he fell. The second half started in the same way, as we piled on the pressure by the Kytler keeper was up to the task. The game was put beyond their reach on the 32nd minute, when Qwivotic brilliantly knocked down the free kick from Dylan Bell, and got the shot off on the swivel to fire it in off the post. 3-0 with just 8 minutes to go, and the game was pretty much sealed up, despite a last minute goal from the Kytler Pivot.

Outside of Eastfield Lodge participation, there was massive controversy as 8 of Saugeais' swimmers that were part of their delegation had failed to be entered into their events, much to their fury. Also frustrated would be Miranda Blokland, a Kytler weightlifter who had hoped to be taking the Women's 48kg category gold on home soil, but that event was cancelled as it transpired that there were no other competitors. Those were the bigger stories of the day, but of note there is Dixhuitiles 9-3 dismantling of Aquillian in Pool A of the Futsal matchday. All in all, this is how the medal table looks:
AFTER DAY 1 G S B T
Sargossa (SRG) 2 2 0 4
The Kytler Peninsulae (KYP) 2 1 0 3
Eura (EUR) 1 3 1 5
Darmen (DAR) 1 0 0 1
Liventia (LEN) 1 0 0 1
Mangolana (MNG) 0 1 3 4
Aels (AEL) 0 1 0 1
Aquiliana (AQL) 0 0 2 2

What to look forward to on Day 2:
The women's softball will be entering its second day and Eastfield Lodge will be looking to capitalise on their winning start (if indeed they have a game, with the weird scheduling of softball Pool B). Our women will be starring in their first Futsal match as well, hoping to emulate the men's success. In the pool, we'll see if Umar Tariq can follow up on his impressive heat performance to get the gold in the men's 100m backstroke, with Jaber Hakmi playing a role. Umar will also be starring in the 100m breaststroke final, and both Umar and Jaber will be featuring in the 200m heats. As for Adeela, well she'll be starring in the 200m breaststroke final, so let's hope she can do well. Elsewhere, it's the first pool matchday for the men's Volleyball, which we have a team entered into.
