KSK 3-3 NKB / Demetriev rues points dropped after defensive shambles
Youngster Loïc Toyotomi enjoyed a dream debut but one that was marred by a series of defensive lapses which saw Kelssek slump to a draw against New Kowloon Bay, a team ranked 339th against whom most fans at Stadium of the Workers will have been expecting a win. Kelssek had a fine match on the front foot and dominated possession, but combined this with a shaky defensive performance that will leave many question marks on their World Cup qualifying hopes going forward.
Kelssek should have put the game to bed after the 19-year old Association Ariddienne striker, coming off a breakout season as the second division’s top scorer to push his club to promotion as playoffs winners, replaced Rémy Niemi on 64 minutes and made it 3-1 just over ten minutes later.
after a series of poor defensive lapses that raised serious questions about the team’s discipline and defensive coordination.
The result was clearly a disappointment for Ruslan Demetriev in his first match in charge of the national team. “As a coach you want to worry about structure and the big picture, but you look at these kinds of moments, set pieces, counter attacks, and yes, you can say there is a lack of concentration, isolated mistakes. But it’s just not something we can keep doing, and the players know this, so what I want from them is to make this a blip and not a negative trend.”
As expected, Kelssek were able to dominate possession of the ball, and there could be few complaints about how they controlled the match and created chances. Agapeto Licea had given Kelssek the lead after a spell of early pressure, slotting the ball in from the edge of the penalty box with a measured finish. Medyson Consðntin’s speed and incisive play was finding holes in the backline, and one of these plays saw them sliced to the ground having steamed into the penalty area with the ball, a foul for which Tsang Chi-fung was cautioned but some fans in the stadium evidently felt merited a harsher sanction. For what it was worth, Rémy Niemi cooly converted the penalty and at 2-0 many would have felt Kelssek could have run away with it.
To their credit New Kowloon Bay did not buckle and were rewarded for a stalwart response in the second half as they seized on a counter-attack opportunity that left them with a two-on-one situation that saw Chidi Okafor and Rodrigo Silva exchange passes to get past Volodymyr Casiraghi allowing the former to lob the onrushing Dominic Tessier. Pablo Ruiz got on the end of a long range free kick to make the score 3-2, a goal which at the moment would have felt like a poor lapse but ultimately only a consolation. Artemios Ostend being sent off for a second yellow card and going down to ten players would surely have played some role in Lee Chun-hei being able to get a free header from a corner with a minute left in normal time, giving New Kowloon Bay a dramatic equalizer that stunned the crowd in Neorvins.
