New Gelderland wrote:We thank the voters for their confidence in our bid, and we do hope to win over the one voter who wished to reopen bidding.

At this point, we foresee signups going up on Monday with a one month signup period (give or take). Given the schedule for World Cup qualifying, we are aiming for an early March start to get the window between World Cup Qualifying and World Cup Finals. Final schedule is of course TBD and dependent on the final RL schedules of both hosts.

I have a question - if the lineup of gold medalist mixed teams of 3 or 4 athletes gets some shake ups (like if 1 or 2 athletes are replaced with other ones), are their places still secured in main event Olympics?

In team events like relays or doubles where only one team is entered, any team with at least one member of the defending champion team will be exempt (if a whole new team is entered, they will have to qualify on merit). In bobsleigh, the defending champion pilot (first name listed) will be exempt from qualifying. In luge doubles, if the defending champion team is split up, the higher-ranked entered team with at least one member of the defending champion team will be exempt.

As stated in the bid, we plan to broadly use Liventia's qualification schema. Depending on the event, we would therefore use the process above.

Would any of y’all have a “Wiki Design for dummies” guide? I want to create an NS sports wiki much like this but the text box where it works out of operates nothing like NS and is a bit confusing

This is the main reference for how to use wikitext: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Wikitext
Anything that works on Wikipedia should work on the NSSWiki, other than Wikipedia often uses templates and modules that are far too complex and detailed for our purposes. A nice feature, too, is that you can directly link to any image on Wikimedia Commons (or Wikipedia). Do try things out using the preview button (which is good practice anyway).

Anecdotally, signups tend to be lower in non-RL Olympic years anyway. It's pretty common.

I also wonder if signups being concurrent with WC Qualifiers has something to do with it... In any case, that's why I'm holding out with my signup.

First round of signups are updated.

Additionally the signup deadline is now pushed back to the 12th of March. This should give us a month of signups.

Formally making known my opposition to Huron League entering an "under 18" puppet for ice hockey. It's against the spirit of Olympic rules where each NOC/country has a set limit of entries, and Huron League is using a puppet that is clearly not a standalone IC nation which would have its own Olympic Committee to bypass the limit and enter 2 teams in each hockey event.

Hello all. A few updates once again.

We will be pushing back the signup deadline to 23:59 UTC, 15th of March, 2023, with no extension past it, to give people more time to sign up. From what we have seen so far, there appears to be significant burnout from many users following the back-to-back runs of World Cup qualifying and the IFCF submission deadline, and we believe that this would give people enough time.

We have also decided to scrap the running of qualification rounds, partly due to a lack of hosts who have expressed in signing up, as well as relatively low signup numbers up to this point.

The tentative date for scorinations will be on the 20th of March, with our aim to finish by the 6th/7th of April. This is to take account into my cohost's RL obligation, which requires him to be out of the country for a significant period of time at an earlier date than what we had expected.

Waisnor wrote:Hmm, will the sign up window be expanded due to low number of sign ups?

That said, however, repeating the same questions is not particularly helpful either.

Sorry for missing some of the cut offs for roleplaying. Been busy with work so I’m usually backfilling days via news posts and summaries/highlights.

Noticed on the most recent post (April 5th) my total medal count shows 2x bronze. I’m only tracking Katarina Pančochova. Not sure if this was an error or if I completely glazed over some of my results. I’ll double check again.

Edit: was the second bronze Men’s Ice Hockey?

This remains the general discussion thread for all Olympic events; your question is better served in the OOC thread for these specific Games.

Looking ahead to the summer, I am once again putting out a feeler for any interested junior hosts to host the Games of the XVII Olympiad. The timeline I am aiming for is to host and complete all events no later than the first week of August, meaning most likely signups in June and the Games in July. For this to happen, I invite any interested junior hosts with prior hosting experience on NS Sports to send me a TG expressing their interest. Enquiries from users wishing to co-host together with others, with me serving as a third senior host or advisor, are also welcome.

I am looking to take a mostly hands-off, advisory role this summer, meaning I will help guide the junior host(s) with signups, formats etc, and intervene where needed to correct errors, but limit my own scorination duties to only the extremely complicated sports, as may be requested by the junior host(s). However, if a junior host wishes for me to have more involvement, that is fine too. I have previously taken on this advisor/secondary "host" role at both the 9th Winter Olympics and 9th Summer Olympics.

If moving into Olympic hosting is something you have been considering but never previously felt comfortable taking the step, feel free to shoot me a telegram and we can discuss it from there.

Quebec and I are currently thinking about bidding for the Games of the XVII Olympiad. If we were to be elected hosts, we would not anticipate starting scorination until the beginning of August at the very earliest.

Just backsolving a few things, you'd need to submit fairly quickly if you want to start scorinating at the beginning of August at the earliest (sign ups for one month would mean starting beginning of July, and a week of bidding means the last week of June).

Anyways. Winter Olympic event list are now based on the Milano Cortina games. New and deprecated events have been placed on the extended list. In short the changes are:
  • Mixed team skeleton added to extended list
  • Women's doubles luge added to extended list - if not offered, then men's doubles luge becomes open doubles
  • Hosts may continue to offer the individual combined event or offer the new team combined event in alpine skiing
  • Mixed team parallel alpine skiing removed from the base list and added to the extended list (not offered at the 2026 Olympics)
  • Cross-country skiing distances and styles adjusted
  • Dual moguls freestyle skiing added to the extended list
  • Nordic combined team format adjusted to be teams of 2 instead of 4
  • Women's large hill now on base list in ski jumping
  • Ski mountaineering added to the extended list

Yes — to clarify, I meant to say that neither of us could scorinate until the beginning of August at the very earliest, not that we were intending to start the Games then. Given that timeline, we'll probably just let things play out as they play out naturally; if that pushes us to a September start, then neither of us have any issues with that with IRL conflicts.

NEW OXFORD and WHITEHAVEN, Afanc Strait and JOLBONOPOLIS, Quebec and Shingoryeo
Candidate Cities for the Games of the XVII Olympiad

The Royal Quebecois Olympic Committee and the Afanc Strait Olympic Committee are officially submitting their bid to co-host the Games of the XVII Olympiad.

CANDIDATE CITY INFORMATION

New Oxford-Whitehaven Information
Centered around the world-renowned University of New Oxford, the city of New Oxford is the third largest city by population (with around one million people) and the largest by area in Ceni's "Metropolitan Tetrad," which also consists of Cenial, City Centre and Whitehaven. The city itself has at least five radically different vibes: the northern area around Cenial International Airport (which is actually in New Oxford) is more gritty and working-class, even with some "garden city" districts interspersed; the central areas around University Centre definitely have a college town vibe, with students roaming the streets in search of booze and treats; Downtown New Oxford is a classic and cultured city, with theatres, music halls, museums, and exhibition halls along with some research activity; south of University Aumbry, the neighbourhoods turn into leafy suburbs, with a less urban vibe than much of the remainder of the Tetrad.

Arguably the most beautiful spot in Ceni, Whitehaven is known for its beaches and its spas. Originally, the town sold itself as a centre for sea bathing, which, 200 years ago, was said to have medicinal properties. A nice sea breeze blows along the beaches here, and the tradition of sunset walks along the beach has attracted lovers for a while now. Nowadays, Whitehaven is rapidly gentrifying, with the wealthy from other areas of the Metropolitan Tetrad flocking to new seaside developments.

To be entirely clear, New Oxford and Whitehaven are contiguous and form part of the same metropolitan area. They are well-connected by metro, tram, and surface-level bus.

This bid is the culminating effort of the Afanc Strait Olympic Committee, which has succeeded the Cenian and New Gelderlish Olympic Committees. Before this bid, the two nations have previously cooperated in football (ASSL) and athletics (sending a delegation to the aborted Global Athletics Tour). Ceni and New Gelderland will field one team under the mantle of the Afanc Strait, although the user behind both nations reserves the right to post results under the NS account for Ceni, New Gelderland, or the Afanc Strait itself. Beyond the IC reasons which I have elaborated in previous Olympic and World Cup posts, this change is also for OOC reasons to more streamline my NS activity under one mantle.

Jolbonopolis Information

The Royal Quebecois Olympic Committee (RQOC) will be submitting the city of Jolbonopolis for submission as the co-candidate city of the 17th Summer Olympics. Originally founded as a fort and treaty outpost between the local indigenous peoples and just-unified nation of Quebec and Shingoryeo in mid-1700s, the city would quickly grow due to its location as a major river trade post and later a major railroad and manufacturing centre. After a major fire in 1862 that burned down most of the city, the city would be rebuilt under an urban works project that would see the construction of wide avenues, leafy promenades and distinctive buildings backed with strong sewage and aqueduct systems.

Exactly two centuries after the fire, contemporary Jolbonopolis continues to maintain strong reputation as the Western Metropolis of Q&S, even if a lot of its allure has since been passed onto Montevicio and Prince Eric, two coastal port cities with growing population and glitzier reputations. It continues to be a major transportation and manufacturing hub in western Quebec, and enjoys expansion in technological and health sectors over the other two cities. Also known is its strong presence as a musical and educational centre, where its reputation as 'Music City' and the 'College City' have held up well and arguably doubled, and it is represented across almost all sports with an inner-city franchise, usually by the big two of Jolbonopolis Winterhawks and Spartak sporting clubs.

As for the city itself, Jolbonopolis is an inland city with temperate climate year-round, with cool, windy summers combined with high snowfall and ice formation in the winter. Due to its high altitude of around 1200m, visitors may find a similar situation to Prescott back in the last Olympics, with multiple outdoor events possibly affected by the conditions. The difference, however, is that Jolbonopolis is located on flat plains, with a gigantic Lake Jolbonopolis on the city's northern suburbs, and multiple rivers heading into the lake all the way from Huayramarca around 100-150km south of the city or other parts of the Yoseo-Manitoba province, and is not far away from seemingly-endless plains and wheatfields. Jolbonopolis has a five-line, 85-stop metro system, as well as a bus and tram system that feeds into the metro, but it would be relatively easier for one to drive here especially compared to the cities out east. All venues will be pre-existing, with minor and major upgrades made where necessary.

Jolbonopolis is an inland city, which means that surfing and beach volleyball events will be held at a major city approximately 2 hours away in Montevicio. A city of 900,000 with a bustling film and entertainment industry named 'Montywood', as well as internationally-renowned Monte Romeo, Montevicio's scenery, beaches and low-tax status have made it an internationally-renowned destination of its own.

Fort Joobong, located on the campus of the Air Force Academy fifty kilometres east of Downtown Jolbonopolis, will be hosting shooting events of the Olympics. Due to the Fort itself located in a city of 80,000, there already exists a half-hourly commuter service that takes approximately thirty minutes between Jolbonopolis Central station, and they will increase in frequency during the course of the Olympics.

Between the two co-candidate cities, Quebec & Shingoryeo and the island of Ceni are separated by long, turbulent oceans separating their respective regions named Blood Sea, and will see minor time differences with Ceni being around three to four hours ahead of Quebec in terms of time zone. Frequent airline services between Cenial and Jolbonopolis Airports will be made available by both Spiritair, who have their western Quebec hub in the city, and multinational Air Terranea. The expected flight time is around 5 to 6 hours.

EXPERIENCE

The Afanc Strait has hosted events as five nations - Racao, Kel Assuk, Costa de Ouro, Ceni, and this one. As Racao, he has hosted the Port Louis Rugby Sevens events. As Kel Assuk, he hosted the 3rd Independents Cup with Spaam. As Costa de Ouro, he has hosted the 13th Handball World Cup, the 6th Volleyball World Expo, 1st Fencing Grand Prix, and 3 Astyrian Series of tennis. As Ceni, he hosted World Cup 76 with Electrum, World Cup 79 with Drawkland, the 63rd Cup of Harmony with San Jose Guayabal, the 84th Cup of Harmony with Delaclava, the 61st Baptism of Fire with Red Blackiland, the 41st Copa Rushmori with the Isles of Avon, the 20th International Basketball Championships, 7 editions of the Cenian Open, and 3 editions of the International Tennis Trophy. He has also hosted numerous smaller tennis tournaments with both Costa de Ouro and Ceni. Finally, as New Gelderland, he has co-hosted the Games of the X Olympiad with Electrum, the XVII Winter Olympiad with Quebec and Shingoryeo, a bevy of qualification events for the XVI Winter Olympiad, and the 23rd Copa Rushmori.

Quebec and Shingoryeo have hosted and cohosted a variety of events. This includes the World Cup 73 and 77, 2 Baptisms of Fire, 2 Cups of Harmony, 6 World Cups of Hockey, 5 International Basketball Championships and 2 World Bowls on a major scale. The most relevant experience for this bid is cohosting the Games of the XVI Olympiad with Electrum, XVII Winter Olympics with New Gelderland, and hosting the qualifier competitions for the XVI Winter Olympics and the Games of the XI Olympiad. Currently, he is the President of the World Cup of Hockey Federation, and also serves as Commissioner of the NationStates College Football and the International Volleyball Federation.

SCORINATION DETAILS

All events will be scorinated on the latest version of xkoranate, with any updated files developed and used for this Olympics to be made available at the conclusion of the Olympics. Fortunately, many files have already been updated back in Electrum’s hosting of the XV and XVI Olympiads.

As with the XV Olympiad, all events on the extended list will be played. Eighteen scorination days are expected, with one or two extra scorination days to be scheduled should RL circumstances require them.

As with the past Olympic Games, the MMAB system will be used to discourage min-maxing. Following model, having been used for the last two summer Olympiads, will be applied:

1–30 entries: Full MMAB for any STDEV
31–80 entries: Full MMAB for STDEV of 35 or less
81–175 entries: Full MMAB for STDEV of 30 or less
176–300 entries: Full MMAB for STDEV of 25 or less
301+ entries: Full MMAB for STDEV of 20 or less

The roleplay bonus will be weighed by MMAB (20%), roster grade (5%), non-degrading cumulative roleplay score (35%), degrading cumulative roleplay score (40%). RP bonus on the degrading cumulative roleplay score, will never be degraded to zero. By establishing both degrading and non-degrading cumulative roleplay scores, the RP bonus is designed to reward quality and the consistency of quality itself.

A broad guideline introduced by Electrum for the XV Summer Olympics, which was also in use when grading RPs for the XV Summer Olympics, will be in use (edited for pronouns and American style):
Roleplay marking can be pretty subjective, but here are some of the things which would help you in scoring highly:
  • Quality > quantity - a roleplay that can make us laugh or feel emotional or has good sporting analysis/research (especially for more obscure sports), graphics, characterisation, worldbuilding will be marked more highly. Feel free to experiment and be creative.
  • Try and roleplay events about or related to the Olympics or its athletes in some way.
  • Use all the information provided to provide details: where applicable, refer to team rosters, IC info, sponsorship info, other people's roleplays, etc.
  • Respect people's roleplay permissions (usually people post them on the roster thread) -- this includes not godmodding if it's not allowed and being consistent with what other people have roleplayed first.
  • Don't give us a list of results -- we scored them! Instead, give information that we don't know. Fill in the blanks and provide context behind the scores. How did the athletes feel? What moves did they do? How did they win or lose? Why did they perform above/below expectations?
  • Don't expect to always win. Remember that having a high skill athlete and/or a good roleplay only increases but does not guarantee the chances of a medal.
  • Don't tag posts to edit in roleplays later. Once we see a post on the thread, we will score it. If you have anything new to add, do so in a new post and it will be counted.

A 33% RP bonus penalty will apply to delegations with a standard deviation more than three points above the limit, or for any delegation with 11+ entries with a standard deviation over 30.

For RPs suspected of having been generated by AI, we will generally adopt the principles adopted by Tumbra and Chromatika in their winning bid for World Cup 93.

The maximum entry limit will be 625 entries and 2 delegations, meaning a single country or an unified team, per user. Unified teams can be submitted on the condition that all nations in the unified team are separate nations on NationStates and consist of at least two separate OOC users. Having unified teams that solely consist of one user and their puppets add scorination complexity while producing little marginal benefit. The average skill of all athletes submitted by a delegation can be no more than 50.

For the purposes of the "Rules regarding withdrawing a nation from an NS Sport RP", a nation is considered to have signed up when their entry is accepted by either cohost. Both cohosts will be adding the entries immediately upon accepting them. If nations wish to withdraw, their roleplay bonus will be set to zero without any other intervention. The same procedure is used should a nation cease to exist during the Olympics.

PROVISIONAL SCHEDULE

August 21 - Start Signups (or Earlier)
October 11 - Indicative Starting Date

We intend to begin the Olympics in mid-late October after the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, with competition running for around three and a half weeks to a month. As with last two OIympiads, numerous off-days will be built into the scorination schedule to take into account potential RL contingencies. We do not foresee pushing back the Games past November 4 to allow for New Gelderland’s RL plans.

In the event this bid leads to a successful Summer Olympics, Quebec and Shingoryeo would take up the role of Olympic Council President (New Gelderland is already Olympic Council Vice President).

Edit 1: Added spoilers for easier viewing, made changes to demonstration event details for consistency

<Schottia> I always think of Ceni as what it would be like if Long Island was its own nation, ran by Bernie Sanders lol.
