The first thing that greeted them was the total darkness. It wasn't like a shadow - it was like there was nothing existing at all. Shadows had depth, but what awaited them was absolute nothing. It was unlike anything any of them had ever experienced - not The Elder, not Tarahal, and not even The Hound.

Then... There was a figure waiting for the twelve of them. A single figure, standing at ten feet tall. Any light that tried to shine upon it failed, resulting in a sort of a permanent blurring affect. They could see that there was something in front of them, but the exact dimensions and details weren't readable.

"You have arrived," communicated the creature in each of their minds, in their native tongues, "But you are too late. As it was foretold a millennia ago, the seal is breaking. We will protect the tear with our lives, and when it grows enough to send forth the legions, even those chosen of Zaiden will fall."

"In your dreams," replied Tarahal, "We would rather die than see that happen."

"Oh yes," answered the creature, still in their heads, "You will die. The fact that you know about me means that you are not allowed to survive."

"What are you going to do about it?" inquired The Hound.

A laughter rang across the darkened space, only illuminated by a dim, ever-present light. The blurred figure became two, then four, then eight, until finally, the blurring had become sixteen individual humanoid creatures, only losing two feet of height in the process.

Suddenly, they were upon the twelve of them with no warning. With sharpened claws, teeth, and ear-shattering shrieks, the creature of the abyss began to wail on the Yesopalithans with vigor.

Try as they might, their weapons found no purchased on the blurred creature. The six bodyguards brought on by the three leaders fell to the wayside, not dead but absolutely unconscious. Six survivors stood in a circle, back to back, with the creature now combining again to fit the one that they had faced in the beginning.

"You are all going to die. I will remain, and when the seal is broken, we will usher in a new age," announced the creature.

Then...

Nobody knew what happened next. One second, they were staring death in the face, the next, the creature was gone.

In front of them? The Dark Crusader.

I don’t know if I can properly express this in writing, but I am actually getting scared and nervous right now, and not for the reasons that anyone reading this might think.

How in the world have we become this good? The Federal Republic of Estorvipa and Estorpiva is a new nation, even if the history of both the Vipan and the Pivan people are very long in comparison. Since the Federal Republic is new, the national football team is also new, and though we have almost succeeded in bringing glory to our nation in our very first attempt at international football, we all know that we still have a long way to go before we can truly call ourselves competitive against the rest of the multiverse. But as far as Anaia itself is concerned, it would seem that we are actually close to that point.

We survived Starblaydia, one of the most storied and decorated teams in the history of the sport. We shouldn’t have survived them, but we did. And then we survived Osarius. That one was even more surprising, not only because we won that match, but also because the Federal Republic actually managed to find a way to dominate the game. Osarius dominated us at first, but at the end it was the Federal Republic that was dominating. And that surprised all of us.

And Huayramarca… Huayramarca was different. I don’t know what it is that made it different from the others, but we played differently against Huayramarca. We played like we weren’t afraid of them. And it seemed as if that was the key to beating them. Fabian was unleashed in this game. This was the Fabian Prasutagusic that everyone had wanted him to be when he was called up for the team. This was the Fabian who scores goals for fun. And you could see it on his face that he was indeed having fun. If only things could always be like this for the national team, but we all know that sooner or later, it’s going to come to an end. I had the feeling that the end would come against Huayramarca, but it didn’t come yet. I have the same feeling against Iskandervale. And this time, it might truly be the end of our good luck and fortune.

Parvidzhon Borrowfield mopped his brow. Some of his skin sloughed off and stuck to his hand, but it was probably fine. Probably just the stress.
More mysterious illnesses had struck. They were without Tarkanian and Rezaei now, but Rouhani and the remaining four-fifths of her face were ready for action. Still on the bench, because she was terrible. But the marquee names were there. Nasir Majerle had struck the first goal, a slumbering opening 40 minutes awoken dramatically when the Moths midfielder charged inside to take on a ball in no man's land and whipped it low past Rukipiato, and with that the girl came alive.
The Simurghs had lead twice and been pegged back twice. Tesuna'e equalised, heading home a corner, but a penalty was won by Mkrtchyan and driven home by Sulaka, then equalised by a high, arcing shot from Lifevaneka. Iskandervale needed a difference.
On Borrowfield's depleted bench, he thought he could see one.
Luna Xerxes had such bright eyes. They had been cat-green once, but now were a searing chartreuse, just as Kamarandan, just as Sulaka, just as a few of the chosen. And as they'd mopped up what was left of poor Rudy, there were shades of that colour, too. It was a sign, Borrowfield thought. The Glory wanted her on the pitch, and who was he to deny her?
Miriam Resan came off, just after grazing the post with a speculative effort. Xerxes swept on. She was young, just 19, and surely set for better things than the Iskandrian league. She needed only show it here, in the last ten minutes of a game that they needed to win...
... she didn't actually register a tackle or a pass, let alone a shot, within the first three minutes. Iskandervale's goal stemmed from a Bowman clearance that looped over everyone, let substitute Shamshira Kadhim race through on goal, round Rukipiato and score her second goal off the bench of the campaign. But surely Xerxes' presence inspired them. Yes, surely that was it.
They could not fail now.

Forces Beyond Knowledge

Journal entry from Dr. Roland Freely, dated January 20th, 2025

Well, here I am, the Isle of Aleirave. Honestly, I kind of forgot this island existed before today, let alone existed as a part of Eshialand. I guess it’s just one of those parts of the multiverse you never really have a reason to care about until that reason is shoved in your face by the Minister of Health.

I’ve arrived here today because apparently, there’s a mystery to be solved. Somehow, the people of this island have lost their memories. I don’t know much else apart from the fact that I’m being told to wear a gas mask for this investigation. That’s a lovely sign, isn’t it?

I’m being set up in a small lab on the outskirts of Lahaira. The island doesn’t have much infrastructure, so we’re doing this warzone style: we have what we’ve brought with us, and the rest we just kinda have to improvise. Hopefully we don’t need any advanced equipment, since that’ll have to be shipped over from the mainland, which isn’t exactly close-by.

My colleagues and I are going to start out this investigation by taking samples of the drinking water and testing for known chemicals that may be causing issues. We did have the foresight to bring enough chemicals and testing equipment to test for all the common ones, but if it’s something rare, exotic, or unknown… we may be here a while. Honestly though, I think this may be one of the longer investigations we’ve had. What’s going on here doesn’t exactly seem like anything I’ve ever heard of before.

One of my colleagues, Dr. Ciara Terano, for some reason thinks that there may be a magical presence involved in the water here. But… that’s insane, right? After all, she also thinks that the king has magical abilities strong enough to cause some unexplained phenomena across Eshialand City… really, she thinks the Great Sewage Plant Explosion of 2019 was caused by the king being some magical being? Get real… why is she even here anyway, she never has any good ideas…

Anyway, I have to go gather my samples now. Hopefully I don’t wind up losing my mind out there…

"What" she says, blinking.
"Mission failed, we'll get 'em next time" I repeat.
"If we don't buck our ideas up, there's no next time" she says, continuing her march. Twenty minutes after full-time, a miserable defeat against Flavovespia, clearly nobody else is in the mood to quote video games.
But fuck it. I played well, didn't I?
"It's from a computer game" I say.
"I don't care if it's from the Qu'ran, if you're a striker and you're coming into my dressing room after scoring zero fu.."
I'm not sure if this is the point where she stops, but it's definitely the point where I look at the floor and try to stop myself going red in the face, which is a sure-fire way of making myself go red in the face.
When the tirade has finished, Obadele leans over to me and says, as quietly as possible, near enough my ear: "F."
"Anything you want to add, Obadele" comes Dean Sharp's voice.
"No sir" says Obadele
"Thought not"

Knockout Stadium Announcements
Quarterfinals: Suzumebachi Stadium, Katashi / Estádio Marítimo, Santa Teresa / Rikalathen Arena, Maethoru / Orange Bowl, Schemerdrecht

We return to the country's oldest clubs in some of our largest cities for a round of 'hey, I think I saw that stadium in the IFCF once!'. Schemerdrecht SVV's Orange Bowl is the largest and probably the most well-known, with the local club's recent forays in IFCF. The blue and yellow club have picked up the pace domestically, just as the Ko-orenite coefficient soars. All it took was a reinvention of the club's DNA, evolving from a defensive club into a possession-based one. Maethoru SC's Rikalathen Arena has now been the backdrop of a CL Semifinal (!!!!) and a handful of LigAnaia knockouts and everything leading up to those. The cosy green square stadium has gotten most international airtime out of all of our grounds. The Estádio Marítimo hasn't been seen in a while, as Branvon CD has collapsed to become one of Top League's worst clubs. The stadium hasn't lost any of its charm. Then the Suzumebachi Stadium, of Katashi-Kanatsu, which is also back from a brief absence in the IFCF. The aggressively multi-sport venue made some changes for football, but arguably not enough. The KFA is deaf to your complaints: Suzumebachi it is.

More on Aminey CS's stadium later. The Willowbowl, meanwhile, isn't exactly a soccer venue but that doesn't stop the KFA from forcing it on the airwaves once more. The city is so easy to get to, and there's so many seats, after all.

The site of a World Bowl final, Ko-oren's biggest venue will now also take a major football final. All that's left to complete the local popular holy trinity is rugby league - and that's not entirely out of the question. For now, however, it's the proud home of Aminey CS, one-time ex-champions of Ko-oren (locals will tell you it's more nuanced: that one championship was just a year ago and IT BROKE MAETHORU'S HEGEMONY, PARTY IN THE STREETS OF AMINEY, FUDGE THE GREENS) and the site of our fifth CAFA champion. The stadium, arguably a little too big for the city or even the country, will fill up fully for the first time in years (apart from Aminey Caspians (that's gridiron) playoff games, but to be frank - it's been a while since those last happened).

Parvidzhon Borrowfield was Doing A Good Job.
Hard to say anything else. Three wins and a lone draw against Chromatika, three clean sheets, and all this with a pretty bad squad uplifted by a small handful of top 32 league journeymen. So when the call came from the FA, he expected a warm handshake and a pat on the head, but he didn't expect anything more substantive. Budget was limited, after all; budget was always limited.
But no. What they offered him was another job. Handy, given running Iskandervale was a month - usually two weeks - every two years. This would be something more substantial, full-time, executive.
They wanted him to serve as the commissioner of a new, professional league, name to be decided later, and to squeeze from it whatever was necessary to produce a properly competitive national side going forward.
Borrowfield had some ideas.
Let the semi-pros rot. He'd cut off the flow of promotion and relegation for his small, elite list of relevant sides, and enter the best in the LigAnaia. A handful of Anaian journeymen would help raise the level of the local competition, and provide a good example for the rest. New talents would be raised full-time, on a regular diet of footballing minutes, the best of the best drilled to within an inch of their lives. Sure, better and more professional operations had superior coaching, but brute force of minutes and fitness would make up for it. A new generation would emerge, terrifyingly disciplined, strong and powerful, and robust enough to overcome the minor aberrations that appeared at this point to be part and parcel of being on first-name terms with the Glory.
Ultimately, the FA would let him have what he wanted, and the clubs would get in line, too. But at this point in the story, there remained to be seen just how much further the Simurghs could go...

It's regional football season! The CAFA is well underway, while other regions are still in the signup phase. We seem to have landed on six well-established cups that rival each other for size and prestige.

43+ teams in the Independent Associations Championship (edition 16. Edition 15: 48 teams)
36 teams in the Copa Rushmori (edition 41, Ceni and Isles of Avon)
20+ teams in the Atlantian Oceania Confederation of Association Football (edition 67. Edition 66: 32 teams)
32 teams in the Campionato Esportiva (edition 33, Zeta Reka & Hügeltaldom)
30 teams in the CAFA (edition 4, Ko-oren)
15+ teams in the CMFA Mandalanusa (edition 11. Edition 10: 18 teams)

It shouldn't come as a surprise that the AOCAF is the oldest and one of the largest (pre-Anaia, they reached 40 signups, to 32 last cycle). The Copa Rushmori has overtaken it by a tiny margin. The biggest one, however, is the IAC. The CAFA lags a little behind the Campionato Esportiva in 4th and 5th - but remember, there is a difference of 6 teams between 5th and 2nd place! In sixth we find the Mandalanusan competition, who forbid its members to join the IAC. The IAC, in turn, forbids entries by teams from four regions (AO, Esportiva, Rushmore, and - since the CAFA was established - Anaia), but not Mandalanusa (yet?).

The relationship that Ko-oren has with the regionals has shifted over time. From 'bigger than the World Cup' in our early AOCAF days - it was the only competition we saw any semblance of success in, even versus the international heavyweights - down to 'a tournament for B players', back up to 'slightly smaller than the World Cup', with the last one continuing into the CAFA days. Nowadays we select U-23 players with several older members, so we get a team that is at least as good as the over-23s and we prepare our team for the future. In that sense, the regionals are rated a little lower than the World Cup and its qualification, but viewership hasn't changed much in those decades. The AOCAF and CAFA are battling for 2nd place in the multi-year sporting calendar: the World Cup is obviously first. The regional championship trades places with the World Bowl. In fourth place and below we get the cricket T20 and ODI World Cups, the RUWC, RLWC, and - back on the menu - the WBC. The latter will have to come from behind, after years of dwindling numbers, but the inclusion of Ko-orenite clubs in the LPB should see the WBC come back with a vengeance. It will probably not be the 4th best watched tournament, but it won't be 8th or below either.

That said, the CAFA on home soil has definitely skyrocketed interest: the opening match was watched by more Ko-orenites than any World Cup group match. Viewership went down a little as the results aren't going our way, but the Starblaydia match got people back on their sofas.

We'll need a win over Chromatika to advance in the top eight. A draw isn't enough even if the Ochre Islands lose: Pyazhnaya will overtake them and us in that case. Flavovespia and Iskandervale will advance to the quarterfinals, and Huayramarca, Audioslavia, Legalese, and Estorvipa and Estorpiva will likely remain top eight as well, barring very strange circumstances.

The consolation bracket is still to fight for, with teams in 17th through as far down as 25th still able to seize a spot in Koroa City.

“Across the region, teams have speculated about an idea called ‘The Casaran Gambit’; a strategy where one actually prefer to lose their first match in a Casaran tournament, in order to make the path to a solid finish easier. Since most Casaran tournaments finish with a knockout stage that takes in not just the top team, but a few others, this is a not unreasonable idea on paper.”

“However, the Gambit has a few flaws. First, it assumes that the tournament will be forgiving enough at the end of the Casaran matchdays to allow for leeway. Since teams are playing five matches in Ko-oren to work down from thirty teams to eight, what we’re dealing with is effectively a double-elimination tournament to the quarterfinals. If you push for the gambit and take the first loss, a second one will nearly put you out. And if you take that early loss to a weaker side, there’s a good chance you won’t beat enough teams that perfom well to win a Strength of Victory tiebreaker.”

“I hesitate to use a small sample size, but the way the competition is playing out suggests that there’s also a psychological risk of giving up that first game. The first matchday resulted in 13 winners, thirteen losers, and four teams who drew. With one matchday to go, only the top 17 teams can make it through to the top eight. Twelve of the thirteen won their first match, while two played to a draw. This means just three losers from the first matchday can make it through, and all three have to win to have a shot, as they’re all currently outside the top eight.”

Four wins from four. Even in an ordinary group stage that would be impressive, but Flavovespia were living the dream with their table topping Casaran performance, securing a quarter final berth with a game to spare. It was by no means an easy win for Flavovespia against a steely Legalese side, but Flavovespia found a way to come out on top again in a close contest.

It wasn’t a good start for Flavovespia, barely 5 minutes in and David Blythe clipped Eli Cowan just inside the box. Despite some protestations from the players in yellow, it was given as a penalty. No heroics for Aarif Muhammad this time, as Joey Muir put it into the back of the net, sending the keeper the wrong way. Legalese seemed to be able to control this game with a lead until half time, but against the run of play somewhat, Flavovespia found an equaliser. A direct ball over the top by David Clark caught the defence napping, and Adrian Jones was one on one with Alex Crosby. He slotted it into the bottom corner, making it a goal apiece just before the break.

Flavovespia would get the lead just before the hour mark. A clever body feint by Jonathan Bagshaw opened up the room on the edge of the box to have a shot, and he sent a curling effort just inside the post, Crosby had no chance to save that. Legalese had to try and be even more attacking than their usual selves to get an equaliser, but in the 76th minute they did. This one was something of a rare mistake by Aarif Muhammad, he flapped at what seemed like a relatively easy cross to gather up, and Eli Cowan volleyed in to tie the game.

The question was, would a winner come and the answer came 3 minutes later. Bagshaw was the supplier this time, he floated a cross to the back post, for Jones to head into the net. A well worked goal between the two Flavovespians who were so dominant in attack recently. Legalase gave it their all to score again, but to no avail.

Flavovespia stay in Aminey to play Iskandervale. Just a draw needed to secure 1st place in the Casaran group stage, with Augusto Rinaldi coy on how much squad rotation ahead of the quarter finals there’d be.

Before they could say anything, the Dark Crusader was moving.

"Quick, we must hurry before the creature can return," Nirdasil stated urgently, "I shunted it back to its native domain, but if the crack is big enough for it to come through, we must close it before it can do that again."

"My Lady," Tarahal bowed, as everyone else also showed their respects, "Thank you for your assistance."

Nirdasil waved her hands in annoyance to hurry them along, foregoing ceremony.

As the seven surviving Yesopalithans raced ahead into the dimly lit corridor, the tear between the Abyss and Yesopalitha finally became visible to them. It was about thirty feet long, definitely wide enough for creatures to step through - the only thing that was keeping the denizens of the Abyss at bay was the sheer amount of energy that was pouring out of it. If their enemy was able to stabilize that flow, they would have an unguarded access to the lands of Yesopalitha.

"How did you know to come and help?" asked The Elder, awed by Nirdasil's power.

"I was observing from afar," answered the leader of Yesopalitha, "And I just felt their power grow."

As they went closer and closer to the rift, the sheer power of it started to wear on them. If they hadn't been respected members of their species, they would've been torn apart at the molecular level; thankfully, they were up to the task, and knew that they had to see this through.

"In order to seal the rift," Nirdasil explained, "I will start the spell. We will need three people here constantly for the next week to make sure it completes. While it is being worked on, they will not be able to cross. If the process is broken, it will actually backfire. Do you understand?"

The six nodded. It wouldn't be a lot of rest, but with six of them, they could take shifts and make sure that this would get done. They could also send for supplies discreetly.

Drawing a symbol in the air that was complex and intricate, Nirdasil released her hands into the sky, and a bright light began to fill the room, headed toward the tear between Yesopalitha and the Abyss. As the light encompassed the entire tear, it dimmed a little, and then began to pulsate.

It was now time for the most important ritual in Yesopalithan history.

Eighty minutes in, and nothing was getting done offensively for the Chromatiks.

Yes, Yesopalitha ran a 4-5-1 that sometimes played like a 7-2-1. Yes, when you tried to cross the final third, you would run into two if not three defenders, all trying to rip off your head. Yes, Chromatika had had eight free kicks in the game so far, all to be taken care of expertly by the Flames.

It was frustrating playing a team that was perfectly fine with the end result potentially being a zero-zero scoreline. It was even worse to play a team that was willing to foul and bear the circumstances, while also making sure at all times to not do so much as to be tossed out of the game.

Lisa Amos had seen enough. With her last substitute, she took out Werigo Ani... And changed the formation from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-2-1, putting in Annabel Cameron and turning Cherry Sonnel to be an AM along with Cameron.

Three minutes later, the change paid off. Vasilievich's shot was blocked, but Sonnel followed up, and with Cameron just a few paces away, Sonnel was able to get the ball to her; the resulting shot was low and to the right, and just out of the reach of the keeper - good for the only goal of the match and for the possibility of Chromatika making the CAFA knockouts for the first time in team history.

Once again, Lisa Amos had rescued the team with another bold call. Once again, Lisa Amos reminded everyone why she was one of the best Managers in Chromatik history. There was a reason why the CFF had almost begged for her to stay on for this tournament, mostly so that Lev Repin could take his time to get acclimated before the next Qualifying Cycle.

Who knew what Lisa would do next - after all those years in the Nepharan Premiership/The Zenith, not just anything would do - but Chromatika would always remember her as the woman who stepped in after Franscesca Larriet-Cortes, the one who walked away from the job due to political pressure, the one that could've led Chromatika further and beyond. It's true that she would've never had success in Starling then, but who knows just how much she could've done with that Chromatik squad?

Moments of brilliance can be affirming, but they can also show us the truth.

As I predicted, our good fortune has finally run out at the hands of Iskandervale. And let me just say that it really did look as if our luck had actually run out. I am actually talking about the fact that the Federal Republic has gone from lucky to unlucky, and I know exactly where to start talking about this.

Fabian Prasutagusic is a monster of a man. He may not be a physical monster but he certainly carries himself like one, and he is. What I mean by this is that he knows that he is always a threat to score a goal in any given game of football, and he carries himself around like that knowledge is his entire life. And perhaps it is. Nowhere has that been more visible than in this particular CAFA Cup, where he has just been scoring goals for fun and even got his first hat trick of the tournament. He really should have gotten his second hat trick, Fabian should, but this is what I meant when I said that the Federal Republic’s good luck has now run out, and has seemingly been replaced by bad luck. I hope that that bad luck will be replaced again by good luck in time for the next match, but that still remains to be seen.

We had this match under control. It seems so strange to think about it now, considering that we looked so out of our depth against the likes of Starblaydia, Osarius, and Huayramarca but still won those games, but now that we controlled almost every aspect of the match against Iskandervale, it just so happened to be the one that we would lose. It still boggles my mind how we managed to lose this match. Fabian really should have had at least a hat trick today, but the woodwork and the linesman apparently thinks otherwise. He hit both posts and the crossbar at least twice if I remember correctly, and the linesman declared Fabian was offside three times. Three times! Some higher power must have decreed that Iskandervale must win this match because they were not doing it on their own power, that was for sure. But this is football, as they say. One side must win and one side must lose. And today, that loser was us.

All those years ago, in Audioslavia’s only other foray into Casaran System football, three points and one draw proved to be enough to guarantee a spot in the top eight. Such is the rub of the green this time out, the same is true of the CAFA Cup. Should the three teams of Audioslavia and Estorvipa and Estorpiva all draw with one another, all three would make it to ten points - a mark only eight teams are capable of getting to after the final round of football.

While no Audioslavia team would ever be above a mutually beneficial anschluss match, the question of whether either mis-spelling of Esportiva would be up for a bit of pad-the-defenders’-short-passing-stats is yet to be answered. RJ Styrn, playing her cards close to her chest, has simply stated that she’d be ‘more than happy’ with the kind of slow-paced draw that would energise the side before the Quarter Finals. Certainly the likes of Helios Roy, who had to leave the field early in the second half of the Bulls’ narrow victory over Karodin, due to a dead leg that left him unable to stand, let alone run, the chance to concentrate on getting fitness levels up for the game *after* next, rather than having to worry about being needed to play through the pain in a make-or-break group match, would be more than welcome.

Elsewhere at the top, Huayramarca and Legalese find themselves with the same moral conundrum as the Bulls do with Estorvippiva, while any team scoring victory in the Ochre/Pyazhnaya and Chrom/Ko-oren games will assure progression to the main quarter-finals. As for the teams currently fighting to avoid the consolation playoff, Cobrio, the winner of the Yeso vs Karo and the winner of the C**t/Boat derby may have to wait for confirmation of whether or not they’ve made it to the last eight, while everyone from Savigliane on down - including Baptism of Fire champions Aleirave, Cup of Harmony hosts Mertagne and multiple sepia-tinted World Cup champions Starblaydia - now mathematically eliminated from the main quarter-finals.

Should the either the Bulls or (Estor² + (piva+vipa) get zero points from their encounter, they may still progress, but the boffins and bean-counters will have to work overtime figuring out whether or not that will be the case.

Lena came down from her room upset. That wasn’t like her. She had just got a new video game, about the sport she loved at the moment, and it promised all sorts of cool modes and features. It was even officially licensed, or so Andrew heard. Lena should have been begging to play this game more, not leaving her room in a huff. Something was up.

“What’s wrong, Lena?”

“That stupid game mom bought me won’t even let me do the CAFA Cup.”

“Well, that’s because it’s called the Fox Cup, not the CAFA Cup,” Andrew explained. He found the game’s case. “See? You can tell based on the purple and green colors here.”

“No, I know that,” Lena insisted. “But as soon as Matchday One ends, the game crashes.”

“Huh. Really? Maybe they had trouble coding in a Casaran system. But really, it’s a video game, shouldn’t it be automated somehow, pretty easily?”

“I don’t know.”

“Here, want to show me what’s been happening?”

“Ooh! Pick that one! Pick that one!” Zoe yelled, so quiet until now.

“That one? Zoe, you just like it because there’s a dinosaur,” laughed Lena.

“Just do it! Please?”

“Okay, Zoe.” They moved their selection over to the dinosaur, but as they pressed the button to start the game—

Crack.

“What was that?”

“The power’s out.” A pause. “Hmm. Why isn’t the generator kicking on?”

“Wait a minute.” Lena beckoned the other two over to the window. “It looks like the whole city lost power, too.”

“That’s — that’s weird, right?” Zoe looked up at Lena and Andrew quizzically. “I mean, as soon as you tried to do that dinosaur thing—”

“No, it’s okay, Zoe,” Andrew reassured her. He bent down to look at her at eye level and brushed her hair aside to reassure her. “Trust me, that had absolutely nothing to do with that.” He smiled.

“And there’s definitely nothing wrong.”

There is a legal chance for Huayramarca, but there is also one for the Legalites.

Both Huayramarcans and Legalites face for the last matchday of this peculiar CAFA 4, one with a Casaran format (where teams get faced each other according to performance and some advanced-stats criteria) and both teams are at a position to get through this stage for the Quarter-Finals of the tournament. Huayramarca is on a mission, to recover after a tough CAFA last time, to show some strength and preparing for the upcoming World Cup Qualifier in time.

Omar Caicedo spoke with the press and said “We have the will and desire to fight for this, but we must understand that the rival will put a fight, we will do so too.” There’s no suggestions or signs indicating that Caicedo could do significant changes to the Starting XI, still, there are a couple of things that he considers that should be solved as quick as possible, specially with the defence. Stats have shown that the Condors have conceded goals in critical stages of the match, there’s need to solve said situation to avoid the scheme and mindset from getting badly hit or having some performance slumps. At all costs, Huayramarca shall prepare firmly in the mid and use their wings to exploit the Legalite defence, one that has been quite good through the tournament too.

It is the time for the last push, one more to provide confidence and motivation to the fans with this venture in CAFA, specially after the bittersweet feelings that were dominant through the World Cup Finals with the Condors, who failed at critical moments of matches. There’s always time to improve and we all hope they are aware of it, the moment is now and the goal is close to achieve if they focus correctly on it.

For what it's worth, there were no expectations of what were going to happen during the show's filming.

It was all Harvey Varraskura promoted that week, even as his guests dwindled to D-list icons, with everyone still focused on the football—the Winter Lynxes shat the bed in the CAFA. But there were eyes starting to come back on his show: Perry Salonen, the Premier was Harvey's last guest of the week.

No-go topics were discussed among the show's producers and the Governmental handlers, but there were no promises on from the Varraskura team about whether they would actually avoid these topics.

Salonen arrived a few minutes late to the television studio—an ironic turn of events, given that he wanted it destroyed months ago. But there were certain rules the national leader had to follow as a guest in the studio. He entered the green room, where he was greeted by make-up artists who pampered him ahead of his close-up. Oddly enough, there was no tension in the air, or none that Salonen could detect while in enemy territory.

A knock on the door changed all that, with Harvey popping in to greet the Premier. After all, when one of your country's most powerful figures was a guest on your show, the least you could do is say hello.

"Premier Salonen, we really appreciate the chance for you to be on the show," Varraskura said, reservedly. Genuine in his words, he cracked a slight smile to Perry. This was one of those rare moments where he didn't have to be on for the people. "It really is an honor to speak with you, and I know the viewers appreciate it."

"The pleasure is all mine. We're on the same team, after all," Perry replied. Salonen appeared plastic in his gratitude, feigning a smile to his host. "I've been a longtime fan of yours, and don't let anything you've heard tell you otherwise."

An uncomfortable chuckle from Harvey followed. "I won't take that for granted." He closed the door on the Päälehen, preparing the rest of his show.

Salonen sighed, relieved at the sight of his enemy gone. He knew there'd be a tough audience, and a tough interviewer at that, but this was one he was ready for.

The make-up artists finished up their final touches. Another knock on the door. "The camera's ready for you."

And Perry was too.

It wasn’t a perfect 15 points in the Casaran in the end, but Flavovespia came out on top by getting the draw they needed against Iskandervale. Thomas Foley’s debut performance and Jonathan Goldstone’s showing were decent, but a red card for Andrew Dance was certainly an unnecessary hindrance before the quarter finals.

A rotated squad for Flavovespia gave Thomas Foley a long awaited debut, and good news saw Michael Cole return to give his might to the attack. Iskandervale were on the attack early on, trying to get the lead to try and steal the Casaran victory, but Thomas Foley was up to speed quickly with a few good saves from half-chances. Whilst it was Iskandervale who were slightly better throughout most of the first half, it was Flavovespia who took the lead a bit before the break. Kieron Player’s great long ball cut through the defence, Michael Cole then shifted onto his stronger foot before putting the ball past Hansa Tabasi for the opener.

The second half fell into a familiar pattern, Flavovespia with a one goal lead and keen to sit back and then try and extend it on the counter. A blow came in the 57th minute, when Clotho Sulaka managed to feint past Andrew Dance, before Dance sent her sprawling with a tough sliding tackle. Just outside the box, and through on goal, it was a straight red, and some referees may have even given a red anywhere on the pitch. A needlessly reckless moment for Dance, and his ban could take him out of the tournament. Flavovespia went defensive, with Adrian Jones off for David Blythe to make it a 4-3-2. It was in vain though to save their perfect record. Artak Voskanyan would head past Thomas Foley from the floated cross of Nasir Majerle, with just over 10 minutes to spare. Iskandervale pushed for a winner, but found no way through the determined ten men of Flavovespia, with the #1 seed on the line.

A third CAFA Cup Quarter Final awaits for Flavovespia now. Yesopalitha the opponents in the far East of Ko-oren in Katashi, a nation Flavovespia beat in the previous CAFA Cup by a single goal. All of the hard work to win the Casaran and the #1 seed means very little, if Flavovespia can’t take the momentum with them.

AvK-o Deny AI Wrongdoing

Members of smug Anaian cult arthouse post-rock group Audio Versus Ko-oren, a band with a habit of releasing “albums” of “songs” every time those two national teams meet, have come under fire for trying to pass off a piece of AI-generated artwork as having been done by a human.

The band have pointed to a human artist by the name of “Ash Hal” as having created the artwork, entitled ‘Dragonfly Futilely Attacks Audio’, yet the artist has refused to speak to the press. What’s more, the artist’s social media accounts all appear to have been created in the days after the initial accusation, and the profile picture for each account is a bad drawing of a human face - as if the artist is capable of painting a scene such as the one depicted in the Flies Against album cover, but is unable to draw their own face more accurately than the average drunk bassist might be able to.

Dr. Holly Dalle from Crossport Poshbridge University’s A.I. department has been quoted as saying ‘why are the band lying about it, it’s not illegal to use an AI for album artwork. And it’s obviously an Ai I mean, come on, it’s going those weird wibbly bits on it’, but Professor Vladislaw “Stormhammer” Moriarty from the University of Cathair has said ‘that’s not my name, why are you trying to make me sound evil’ before adding that it was probably a publicity stunt or something.

The head of the band’s marketing team, Infamous P.R. guru Just Fobemov, has since come out and said ‘it’s probably just a PR stunt or something’.

The album drops on Monday evening, with tracks rumoured to be named ‘Banter the Dragon’, ‘Post Football Steals Your Home (Railroad Railroad Railroad Railroad)’, title track ‘Flies Against’ which is a song whose tempo changes according to a bug zapper’s number of zapped bugs per minute, and also a song entitled ‘fuck it just run it through a delay pedal and lets knock off early’ followed by ‘has anyone seen my crayons I need to draw a face for that guy we’re saying is doing the stuff the ai is actually doing’.

Naturally, Audioslavia versus Ko-oren will be happening at around the same time.

The Post Football Derby rivalry has rapidly become the most important in all Audioslavian football, ahead of traditional international spats with Krytenia and Starblaydia. The sides have met six times in recent cycles, with the Bulls winning the third CAFA Cup final against a Dragonfly side that had defeated them in the group stage of the same tournament. Audioslavia were winners in the first round of World Cup 88, but Ko-oren took two of the three Cycle 89 encounters, including the World Cup semi-final on penalty kicks.

Audioslavia will once again be able to count on young striker Helios Roy, who returns from injury and has been quoted on twii-tur as saying that he would never stoop so low as to use an Artificial Intelligence.

We’ll see about that.

For seven days, the Yesopalithans poured their magical and life essences into the spell to seal the abyssal rift. Making sure that two of them were over it at all times, their work was done in secret while also watching that nothing came from the other side to stop them. Though they recognized the attempts of the chaos to invade their minds, the distance between the abyss and Yesopalitha gave them the strength to overcome and to continue the work to keep Yesopalitha safe.

From the outside, the denizens of Yesopalitha couldn't tell anything of this scale was going on. A few noticed that the Dark Crusader looked a bit worse for wear, but that was nothing new - it took a lot out of anyone to run a country full of creatures that the rest of the universe would deem monsters. Yes, they'd succeeded in righting the public image in their own country, but ages and eons of prejudice (some warranted) wasn't easily overcome, and the Dark Crusader stood as the forefront of Unbidden society to try to help them reach heights that had never been reached in the past.

By the fifth day, the spell was starting to show its effects. The tear had shrunk to only be about a foot across, and the pull toward it had lessened to the point that if you weren't directly in front of it, you didn't feel it at all. The Elder, Tarahal, and The Hound were pretty sure that this was going to work. They were going to be successful in helping their country remain safe, and then they'd be free to go about their everyday lives, having completed the job.

Nobody knew where the power of the spell was coming from. Nobody thought to ask the question as to what the cost of the sealing would be. Magic had to come from somewhere - whether it be from the essence of a person's being, whether it be from the life force of something else, or from the well of chaos that existed beyond the barrier to the material realm. By the time that they realized what was truly going on, it was too late.

The spell was completed, and the tear to the abyss was closed and reinforced, not to be breached for a long time.

That very moment, Nirdasil, the Dark Crusader and leader of Yesopalitha, fell into a coma.

The law of averages has finally caught up to us. We all knew that our current rate of success was unsustainable in the long run, and it took a humbling from Audioslavia for us to realize that we were punching way above our weight. Those victories against some of the most successful teams in football and Anaia have given us all an inflated sense of purpose, made us all believe that we actually had a chance to win the CAFA Cup when in reality, we were still very far from that goal. Iskandervale could be a fluke given how Fabian Prasutagusic had a million chances handed to him on a silver platter but fucked them all up, but against Audioslavia, we were reminded that we were not only newcomers to this sport but also minnows.

Recently, I’ve also been getting funny looks from the rest of the team. I don’t remember having said anything that could have made people look at me this way. They know that I keep a diary, and they know that I’ve put things that I normally don’t say out loud in here, but they respect my privacy. Or at least they used to. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just seeing things. But why do I have the feeling that it’s that game against Iskandervale that’s made me a laughing stock with the rest of the team. Or is it even the rest of the team that’s laughing at me? Maybe it’s the Iskandervale team who think I’m an idiot for saying that an in-form striker suddenly losing his touch against their team is a strange thing.

It’s not the end of the road for the Federal Republic just yet though. Even though we are now out of the top eight because of the defeat to the Bulls, the eight teams below the top eight are still in the running to show who is the best of the rest. Yes, 9th to 16th place are all fighting for 9th place now. The Federal Republic is the one currently in the driver’s seat, but everyone else below us is gunning for our position. It’s going to be another tough match. At least we won’t have to play Savigliane anymore. It’s a small consolation but it’s still a consolation.
