Unmanned Ground Vehicles

Postby United NW Canada » Sat Nov 20, 2010 10:52 pm

CSGV-1A2 SQUIRE (Semi-autonomous Ground Vehicle)

Image

The SQUIRE (Semi-autonomous Ground Vehicle) is a 2.5-ton Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) that is perfect for advanced Recon operations, screening force operations and the support dismounted and air assault operations. As well, in NW Canadian service the SQUIRE is used in a Recon screening role in conjunction with conventional Recon and Armored Recon units.

The SQUIRE is sling-loadable under military rotorcraft and features a common chassis. The SQUIRE chassis provides superior mobility built around advanced propulsion and articulated suspension system. This system gives the SQUIRE the ability to negotiate complex terrain, obstacles, and gaps that a dismounted squad will encounter.

Image

The SQUIRE’s unique, highly advanced 6x6 independent articulated suspension, coupled with in-hub motors powering each wheel, provides extreme mobility in complex terrain, far exceeding that of vehicles utilizing more conventional suspension systems.

It will climb at least a 1-meter step, far exceeding requirements, and provides the vehicle with the mobility performance and surefootedness required to safely follow dismounted troops over rough terrain, through rock and debris fields and over urban rubble.

This technology also allows the SQUIRE to cross 1-meter gaps, traverse side slopes greater than 40 percent, ford water to depths over 0.5 meters and overpass obstacles as high as 0.5 meters, while compensating for varying payload weights and center of gravity locations.

Systems:
3D Ladar
The main obstacle-avoidance system on board is the 3D LADAR (“Laser Radar”) system. The system’ beam as it sweeps around hits objects or the ground, and is reflected back to the sensor. By measuring the very short time it takes for the light to flash out and back, the LADAR builds up a 3D view of the area around the vehicle, and it is accurate to fractions of an inch. It is a 3D laser scanner making dozens of sweeps a second.

The onboard computers go through this data and classify the areas around the vehicle as ground (mostly flat), road (flat areas with curbs), trees (tall round things with a halo of leaves), other vehicles (boxy things that move) and people (people-size things that move). Everything else is an obstacle to be avoided. The computer assigns a “mobility cost” to each area, for example, from 0 for a nice, flat road to 10 for bumpy, rough regions and 1,000 for steep, impassable areas or areas with too many obstacles. A path-planning system finds the route through the area that has the least “cost,” and this result is the most efficient path through the terrain.

Occupancy Grid
One of the real technological challenges in navigating a UGV is to combine the obstacle data from the LADAR with the GPS data to divide the world into moving objects and non-moving ones. This is not a simple challenge, as the vehicle is moving all the time, bouncing over ruts and potholes and turning to avoid obstacles. A very precise Inertial Navigation System (INS) is required; this comprises a series of accelerometers (that measure movement) and gyroscopes (that measure turning and tilting). A lot of very clever computer programming reorients the vehicle, the map and all of the obstacles many times a second to keep them all in sync. Robotics engineers call this resulting map an “occupancy grid,” since it divides the world into areas that are occupied by obstacles and areas that are clear.

Image

Multi-Sensor Fusion
As useful as the LADAR is, it does not tell the whole story. One property that can be used to distinguish people and other vehicles from the general group of obstacles is the presence of heat. Humans radiate heat at 98.6 degrees, and cars and trucks are considerably hotter. After all, we need our UGV to distinguish between a log (that it can safely drive over) and a person lying down (which it cannot). The SQUIRE has multiple cameras mounted all around it, providing vision in several modes that include normal color and infrared. As an Army vehicle, the SQUIRE must operate on almost any terrain in any weather.

Other sensors include a combat ID system that tells friend from foe and an acoustic locater array that can tell the remote operator of the vehicle where small-arms fire is coming from giving bearing and estimated range.

An integrated automatic NBC suite is part of the SQUIRE's sensor systems. It is programed to detect radiation as well as a wide spectrum of Biological and Chemical agents. The system constantly checks the SQUIRE's environment.

Telepresence Firepower
Though the SQUIRE is capable of autonomous movement, its weapons systems have two modes of control. The primary is Operator controlled, the second is autonomous. In Operator mode the systems operator assigned to the SQUIRE has full control of all the SQUIRE’s weapons systems.
In autonomous, the SQUIRE can be instructed to automatically engage a specific type of target upon detection and per the limitations of the weapons available. For example SQUIRE could be instructed to attack automatically a specific type of vehicle or aircraft upon detection. This could result in lightning fast engagement response times. If for example the enemy force is equipped with T-72s and BMPs, SQUIRE could be instructed to automatically engage upon detection. The assigned system operator can at any time take full control of the SQUIRE and override the autonomous engagement mode.

Command and Control
The Command and Control link is via two independent satellie links. Two separate units are included in the design for redundancy in the case one malfunctions or is damaged. Placement of the link units allow for greater angular coverage and reduce the chances of the satellites not having direct link.

Each SQUIRE Command station can control up to four PAGE, SQUIRE, KNIGHT, and/or TEMPLAR units. Two Command and Control Units can will fit most troop compartment of most APCs, IFV, or LAVs. Power can be supplied to the Command and Control unit either from the vehicular system or via four fuel-cell modules that are part of the unit.

Armament
The SQUIRE’s primary weapon is turret mounted a 25mm CM-307 Advanced Support Weapon. This automatic low recoil grenade launcher/cannon fires smart 25mm HEDP rounds. Dependant on the target being engaged the rounds can be set to explode on impact or set for airburst over and round said target. Burst radius of 2.5 meters. Laser distancing measures the distance to the target and the computerized system in the CM-307 sets the fuzing of the round. In impact mode the rounds can penetrate 2 inches (50.8mm) HRA. The CM-307 has three modes of fire: 1) Semi-Automatic, 2) 3rd burst, 3) Fully Automatic (rarely used). There is a 500rd armored magazine.

The SQUIRE also has four mounting points on the turret sponsons. These mounting points can be used to mount a variety of munitions. In NW Canadian Service the following load options are the most common:
Option 1: 2 x 7rd CRV7 rocket pods with laser guided CRV7s; 2 x Quad packs of MANPADs
Option 2: 2 x 7rd CRV7 rocket pods with laser guided CRV7s; 2 x Heavy LR ATGWs (Kornet, Hellfire, Brimstone, SPIKE)
Option 3: 2 x Quad packs of MANPADs; 2 x Heavy LR ATGWs (Kornet, Hellfire, Brimstone, SPIKE)

Protection
The hull and turret are made of layered aluminum, ceramic and kevlar, with the front being provided with a layer of spaced armor. Over the frontal 60 degree arc the vehicle is protected against 30 mm armor-piercing rounds of 2A42 gun at a range of 300 m. An ERA armor kit is currently available providing increased protection.

Two groups of 6 Wegmann 76 mm smoke (WP/RP) mortars are mounted on either side of the turret and can be electrically fired either as single rounds or in salvos of four are mounted on most Lynx models. These also prove very effective against approaching infantry.

The SQUIRE also make use of the Arena Active Protection System
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arena_active_protection_system

Power, Brains & Versatility
One of the most surprising aspects of the SQUIRE is its hybrid electric/diesel power plant. Each of the six wheels contains an electric hub motor that actually turns the wheel. The diesel engine is connected only to an electric generator. This configuration allows the suspension to rotate the suspension arms through a large range, permitting an amazing maneuvering capability, including the ability to climb over some barriers and cross gaps. The SQUIRE can also lift any two wheels off the ground and still drive or put its body on the ground with all six tires in the air to reduce its profile or to allow maintenance. The SQUIRE is designed to be maintained with only 10 tools, which is by design to promote rapid and efficient field repairs.

Image

The systems electronics and mechanics are managed by a small cluster of Linux-based real-time computers. There are three sets of computers: the Autonomous Navigation System (ANS), the Vehicle Management System (VMS) and the Battle Command system that performs mission planning and talks to the rest of the Force’s systems.

SQUIRE is designed to fit seamlessly into existing doctrine, which means that they must be able to move in formations or in convoys. Any SQUIRE vehicle can be a formation leader, and all of the unmanned vehicles can follow in formation or in a convoy train.

Cost: $2.5 million per unit
Control unit cost: $500,000.00 per Command and Control Unit

The Otter Marine Amphibious Assault Vehicle Family

Postby United NW Canada » Sat Nov 20, 2010 10:52 pm

The Otter Marine Amphibious Assault Vehicle Family (MAAV-1)

Image

The Otter Marine Amphibious Assault Vehicle Family (MAAV-1) was specially developed for the NW Canadian Marines.

The Otter MAAV-1 has a crew of three and provides accommodation for 10 fully equipped marines. Troops dismount through the rear door or roof hatches.

The Otter MAAV-1 is similar to the U.S. Expeditionary Fight Vehicle (EFV) in concept, designed to be launched at sea, from an amphibious assault ship offshore, and swim to shore at high-speed. Like the EFV, the Otter MAAV-1 uses a planning hull propelled by two large water jets to achieve a high speed of travelling in the water over a long distance (‘over-the-horizon’) at roughly 45kmph, thus reducing the threats of enemy mines and shore defenses faced by the amphibious assault ships.

The vehicle features hydraulically-actuated bow and transom flaps, which are designed to aid the vehicle’s hull skimming across the surface of the water (called planing or hydroplaning in sailing) rather than pushing through the water in the way a traditional displacement hull works. When actuated, the bow and transom flaps together with the bottom of the hull can form a planning surface, allowing the vehicle to go faster by using its speed and hull-shape to lift the front part of the hull slightly out of the water, thus reducing the hydrodynamic drag on the vehicle.

Image

The track design of the Otter Otter MAAV-1 is optimized for deep loose sand, deep snow or boggy conditions with a wide foot print and as low as possible track pressure. This ability has also shown to be quite effective in sandy and other soft environments.

An ERA armor kit is currently available providing increased protection, however, using ERA on a IFV is considered problematic by some experts since it poses a threat to friendly troops located in the vicinity off the vehicle.

Two groups of 6 Wegmann 76 mm smoke (WP/RP) mortars are mounted on either side of the turret and can be electrically fired either as single rounds or in salvos of four are mounted on most Lynx models. These also prove very effective against approaching infantry.

Mine Protection

Armament: (MAAV-1 Version)

Otter MAAV-1 mounts a two man turret that is equipped with a 100mm/30mm combination weapon system that makes it one of the most heavily armed infantry combat vehicles in service,

The turret’s main armament is a fully-stabilized 100-mm gun/launcher. It has effective range of over 2 000 m against armored targets. It’s HEAT round penetrates between 460 and 500 mm of steel armor. This gun is loaded automatically. It also fires APFSDS (can penetrate 500 mm of steel armor at 2 000 m range), HE rounds and gun-launched anti-tank guided missiles. These laser-guided missiles were developed from the Russian 9M117 Bastion technology and are fired in the same manner as ordinary projectiles. Maximum range is 4 - 5 km. These missiles can also target low flying helicopters. The Otter MAAV can fire both ordinary rounds and anti-tank guided missiles while swimming. 40 100mm rounds and 8 ATGM are carried as normal load.

The turret’s secondary armament is a 2A72 30mm dual feed autocannon with 500 rounds. This gun can fire armor-piercing (AP) and HE-FRAG rounds at a rate of 300 rounds per minute for a range of up to 2,000m.

The turret tertiary armament is a 7.62 mm machine gun with 2,000 rounds.

All these weapon systems are mounted coaxially in the turret. The 100mm and 30mm guns elevates from -5º to +60º.

The turret is fitted with the 2K23 system which consists of an automatic fire control system with digital computer, new BZS1 gunner's sight with SAGEM thermal imager and laser illuminator. The commander has a combined optical sight 1PZ-10, a day/night vision device TKN-3MB and an IR search light OU-3GA2.

The Commander’s hatch is equipped with a mount for a GPMG, HMG, or AGL,

Otter MAAV-2 (Cost: $2,400,000.00)

The Otter MAAV-2 series is identical to the MAAV-1 other than the main turret mounted on the vehicle. The MAAV-2 series mounts the TKB-799 "Kliver" one-man weapons station.

Image
Image

The Kliver is armed with a missile pod, a 30 mm 2A72 multipurpose autocannon (it can be used against both ground and air targets) and a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun. The missile pod is mounted on the right side of the weapons station and normally holds four 9M133 Kornet (or 9M133F "Kornet" ATGMs with a laser jam-resistant fire control system, but these can be removed and replaced by a pod of C9K38 Needle surface-to-air missiles. It carries 300 rounds for the main gun, 2000 rounds for the machine gun and 4 ATGMs internally in the weapon station, with additional ammunition carried in the vehicle. The Kliver has a modern computerized fire control system with a two-plane stabilizer and a 1K13-2 telescopic sight with distance measurement/thermal/laser channels and ballistic calculator with external sensors. One of the advantages of the Kliver turret over the standard turret is that it can mount either ATGWs or SAMs, and can target and engage multiple targets with these faster as they are pod launchers.

Otter MAMS-1 (Marine Amphibious Mortar System-1) (Cost: $2,600,000.00)

The Otter MAMS-1is a mortar system that makes use of the AMOS or Advanced Mortar System. AMOS is a 120 mm automatic twin barreled, breech loaded mortar turret. This version if the Otter is intended to provide immediate organic fire support to Marine operations.

Capable of direct fire as well as indirect fire, the Otter AMS-1 120mm HEAT and HE rounds can be used in an assault gun role and are very effective against fortified structures and emplacements.

Image
Specifications
Caliber 2 × 120 mm
Elevation -3° to +85°
Traverse ± 360°
Rate of fire 26 rounds/min
Maximum range
10 km (indirect fire-conventional rounds)
19 km (indirect fire-rocket assisted rounds)
150 m–1,550 m (direct fire)

The AMOS fires GPS-guided rounds at a maximum rate of fire of 26 rounds per minute. It can fire 14 rounds using multiple rounds simultaneous impact, where all rounds impact the target at the same time. The first rounds are fired at higher angles with more propellant so that the rounds fly in a high arc. The next rounds are shot later with a slightly smaller angle and less propellant so that they fly a lower arc to the same target. This can be done seven times in a row, always adjusting the angle and power, so that all 14 rounds hit the target simultaneously. The adjustment between shots is done by a computer. The strike of one AMOS unit roughly equals one strike of an artillery battery.

An AMOS turret has a full 360-degree field of fire at elevations between -3 to +85 degrees. AMOS is capable of both conventional indirect fire and direct fire gun mode. In a typical installation, the vehicle can dash to the next position roughly 30 seconds after initiating the 14-round salvo, leaving minimal time for detection and counter-attack by enemy; evasion is the primary means of self-protection.

The AMOS mortar can fire a variety of 120mm rounds that vary in range. is capable of firing the following munitions:
* CM929 Smoke Cartridge
* CM930 Illumination Round
* CM930E1 Illumination Round
* CM931 Practice Round
