Kia Ora!

Greetings to you, Sir/Madam. I would like to firstly apologise most sincerely... for the delay of our notification, confirming the acceptance of your application. On behalf of Sir Grant Wellington, Director of Foreign Relations Committee of the Bank of Yohannes, I would like to offer my gratitude for the confidence you have shown, and the notably significant fund you have entrusted to the Bank of Yohannes.

As we speak, Dame Aliena Thorndon - Adviser to the Board - has contacted the Director of our International Banking & Market division, from where every process involving the management of your fund will be carefully scrutinised to ensure the minimisation of risk.

We cannot assure you that any portfolio - and certainly not even one as heavily scrutinised as yours in the future - are foolproof. The objective which we have initially set can still not be reached, and careful asset allocation still will not one hundred per cent protect you from loss inflicted from unwanted circumstances afflicting certain markets.

International investment - and most especially of the scale presented by your represented government - is not something for the faint-hearted, and we are aware of the risks that your notable investment can initially experience that of a downward trend. You can rest assure, however, to know that the Bank of Yohannes will take as many preventive measures as possible to minimise the above mentioned unwanted scenario.

After a lengthy voting session - dominated by a heated discussion pertaining to the application of your represented government - this morning, His Majesty's Foreign Investment Council has confirmed the approval of your application. Papers and document containing further details, pertaining to the arrangement will arrive within one day's working time, 10:41 am of the twenty-third of May, signed and authorised by His Majesty Wiremu IV, sovereign monarch of the Kingdom of Yohannes.

Should there be any issues requiring further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me immediately.

Nā mātou, nā,
Sir Matthew Alexander Gilligan OME
Group Chairman, Bank of Yohannes

Your Excellencies,

We hereby deposit a further $8 trillion into the account held in the name of the Imperial Commonwealth of Libraria and Ausitoria. This should bring the total sum in that account up to $17.5 trillion.

In addition we would like to inquire into share purchases: we are looking at acquiring about 0.1-0.3% of this Bank by market capitalization. How often do you pay dividends, how much of the company is publicly owned, and when will you next be issuing shares?

Yours sincerely,
Sir Charles Cecil Oates,

Good day to you, Sir/Madam. I would like to first express my gratitude for your decision to choose the Bank of Yohannes, as your financial service & banking provider. I have went through the background document of your represented government - together with your application - and I can not but acknowledge the unique socio-political nature of your represented nation! Add to the fact that you have specifically refused the opportunity for us to allocate the fund you have provided as capital toward the Bank of Yohannes' various international projects.

Nevertheless, rest assure that no major alteration will be made toward your application - with the exception of the type of account your fund will be registered under, that of the High Security category. And finally, we have forwarded your enclosed letter of application to the Council of Overseas Investment Office. After a brief voting session this morning, they have confirmed the approval of your application. Papers and document containing further details, pertaining to the arrangement will arrive within one day's working time,11:47 am of the twenty-fifth of May, signed and authorised by His Majesty Wiremu IV.

Kia Ora!

Dear Sir/Madam, thank you for representing Mr Moses, our latest of many distinguished international clients. I would like to offer my gratitude - and my fellow colleagues - for the decision of Mr Moses - based upon your recommendation - to entrust our financial service & banking institution with quite a significant percentage of his personal wealth. The Executive category of accounts can be passed on to Mr Moses' family members - children, grandchildren and great grandchildren down the future - enabling Mr Moses to pass his considerable fortune to the next generation of Moses.

After a brief voting session this morning, His Majesty's Foreign Investment Council has confirmed the approval of Mr Moses' application. Papers and document containing further details, pertaining to the arrangement will arrive within one day's working time, 11:05 am of the twenty-fifth of May, signed and authorised by His Majesty Wiremu IV, sovereign monarch of the Kingdom of Yohannes.

We are preparing to direct your attached portfolio to the emerging risk categorised - by His Majesty's Foreign Investment council - region of Esquarium. The very definition of 'emerging risk' in this one particular region, however, is rather misleading, for the vast region is native to over 150 nations - some developing and rising at a much more rapid rate then their regional neighbours. We are planning to avoid nations with the potential to negatively impact our financial results, or materially affected our reputation.

You may not, or may have heard of the Christian Republic of Luziyca, a nation adhering to the capitalist free market economy, blessed by its abundant 'untapped' natural resources, and aided by a relatively well-developed infrastructure as well as high national productivity. The nation has - through a fiscally responsible government and stable regional position - developed a relatively advanced financial & banking sector, allowing the Bank of Yohannes to recently integrate our overseas ATMs and branch-related operations with Luziyca's largest banking institution - CoinStar.

We are planning to invest your capital in the further development of public transportation infrastructures - especially that of the Christian Republic's relatively vast Luziycan National Railroad, a network cooperatively owned and co-operated by twenty-seven Luziycan railroad businesses. The latest trend of electrifying the railway systems of urban Luziyca - and the reportedly notable potential of high future demand by its urban population - has convinced our team to direct our capital within that sector.

As a region, Esquarium is thriving, filled with fast-growing, rapidly developing nations, meaning that in the future, our position and knowledge accumulated from our experience of working hand-in-hand with natives of the Luziycan market, will allow us to better expand and place ourself in the midst, and to cooperatively reap the fruit of Esquarium's prosperity. Further details will be made available through private correspondence between our representatives in one week's time. I am looking forward to work together with your represented client.

Once again, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr Moses for his confidence in the Bank of Yohannes. Should there be any issues requiring further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me immediately.

To: Representative of the Government of the Sixth French Republic
From: Fifth Earl of Whitby the Rt Hon William Apiata OME JP, Group Finance Director, Bank of Yohannes
Subject: Acceptance of your application

Kia Ora!

Greetings! It is a pleasure for I myself to correspond with a representative of the Sixth Republic's government. Firstly, I would like to offer my deep apology for the particular lateness of my reply, to the request of your represented government. The reason for our lack of correspondence in the last five days [ OOC: imagined/NS Roleplaying World days, not real life day :p ] was the long discussion and heated debate the Board of Directors were engaged in, pertaining to your request.

Dame Aliena Thorndon - acting in her capacity as Crown Law Adviser to the Board - has authorised her approval: thereby, granting the opportunity for us to accept your request. The Bank of Yohannes will make available the sum of eight hundred billion Universal Standard Dollars for the next five years. Dame Eleanor White - our Chairperson of Group Audit Committee - will furthermore ensure the proper utilisation of the above capital directed toward energy and tourism-related projects throughout the territorial sovereignty of your represented government: thereby ensuring the avoidance, or at the very least minimisation, of fund misuse originally designated for the fueling of domestic economic growth and catalyzing of wealth generation.

I will give your represented government the opportunity to first consider the above condition requested by us, and would like to assure you that the Bank of Yohannes - nor HM Government - will ask not of any backroom 'resource compensation' nor 'territorial return' as the condition of our incoming agreement. Furthermore, interest and loan-related cost as well as details will be provided in our future negotiation, following the approval of your represented goverment to our condition.

I humbly await the decision and letter of your represented government.

Her Royal Highness' Thought of the Day

My Thought of the Day -- Her Royal Highness Garnet til Alexandros

Image
My grandfather used to tell me 'Yohannes was once not the automatically-associated financial & banking name that it is today', of how... when one person somewhere out there mention the name of 'Yohannes', his or her audience would not automatically correlate that word to 'finance & banking'. In fact, it was not until seventy years before my birth that Yohannes made its first international headline, 'Deal struck between Lyran Lambda Financial and the Bank of Yohannes'. What was forgotten by people out there, however, was that our growth - both as a viable international finance & banking player as well as representative of the Kingdom of Yohannes at the same time - was incremental, not instantaneously within thirty or even fifty years. In fact, the Bank of Yohannes was first founded as an effective business back in 1837: 2014 subtracted by 1837... that is almost near the two centuries mark!

The growth was not that of a straight, steady-as-she-goes linear pattern - neither clearly predicted nor foreseen in the years of my ancestors' time. As a relatively small island nation, the Kingdom of Yohannes had always been relatively isolated for the majority of its earliest founding years, hence some would say the 'industrious' and 'conservative' mindset of most Yohannesians. Which is true... I will have to guess? I will not pretend that I am some kind of an expert here.. for I am not, and will never be one, anyway. I can say, however - and with certainty - that I am proud to be a Yohannesian. When I hear individuals speaking about 'Yohannes', correlating it instantly with 'finance & banking' and 'exporter of capital or investment opportunity', I can not but imagine the creasing shade of yellow and darkish green, proudly emblazoned with its four tribal stars and equal cross. God Save the King, my Father.

It seems today, that that same King has approved of the recent agreement made between CoinStar and the Bank of Yohannes. CoinStar is, apparently, the largest financial service provider and banking institution of Luziyca - Christian Republic by its prefix, and mildy pragmatic by its nature. Now, pragmatism is a good thing indeed, for pragmatic decisions allow the inclusion of as many diverse group of players as well as decision-makers as possible. And so I've heard that this Luziyca abandoned their 'Christian' side of the pre-fix a long, long time ago. And His Majesty the King - oh, how do I like the sound of that name - did apparently stress the importance - to that greedy Fifth Earl of Whitby - of ensuring we will cooperate, and cooperate only with CoinStar. We are not authorised to 'compete' with Luziycan institutions.. and instead work together with these people, together for mutual prosperity. And it seems, that we are not allowed to 'compete' with other like-minded institutions originating from the region of Esquarium - and Elysium, another regional powerhouse - as well.

'Why not compete.. and instead cooperate with these people, Father? Aren't the very principle of wealth itself meant the cut-throat world of competition, rising to the top, climbing above the others, and extending one's hand as far as the eyes can see?

He told me that I've had not seen, neither the truth of what cooperation, open-mindedness and pragmatism can bring for humanity - or if we are to count my friends in the Pony Lands and Mystria... sentientism - nor the [material] fruits of such an initiative and concerted agreements made by different individuals, of varying creed, colour and culture: but united as one, all the same.

It seems that, apparently, I am 'too young' to yet understand any of the above. Well, then I guess I will look forward to the future, and see for myself this so-called 'fruit' coming from our recent agreement and understanding with the Luziycan people, their region, and that region some others mention as sharing similar history, but has since departed themselves from their Esquarium sisters [and brothers].. what is the name again... yes, Elysium! How can I forget that, considering I've written that name just before.

Until next time...!

To: Representative of Mr Brain Turner
From: Sir Grant Wellington, Director of Foreign Relations Committee, Bank of Yohannes
Subject: Acceptance of your application

Kia Ora!

Dear Sir/Madam, thank you for representing your client! We are absolutely delighted to have Mr Turner as one of our many distinguished international high-net worth clients.

I would like to assure your client, Mr Turner, that the Bank of Yohannes acknowledged that corporate finance provides our institution with the pragmatic, value-focused business potential to help us evaluate and maximise business opportunities or solve day-to-day business issues. And that very pragmatic line of thought extends to the very core of our 'minimise risk' approach overseas, where portfolios - some worth upward of the ten of trillions in value - are handled every single day with care, responsibility, and integrity.

I have discussed the application of Mr Turner with His Majesty's Foreign Investment Council this morning, and they have confirmed their approval of your client's application. Papers and document containing further details, pertaining to the arrangement will arrive within one day's working time, 10:57 am of the twenty-eight of May, signed and authorised by His Majesty Wiremu IV, sovereign monarch of the Kingdom of Yohannes.

I am planning to direct your represented client's portfolio to the burgeoning, relatively advanced and developed Ulthrannian economy in the region of Pardes. The Bank of Yohannes will ensure that none of our capital will be directed toward higher than 'relative risk' or 'emerging risk' commercial projects, and that Mr Turner's fund will not be directed toward any armaments production or military-related projects. Our prioritisation will be that of the clean energy sectors and the still infant green industry of the Ulthrannian Empire.

Further discussion can be conducted at anytime that Mr Turner wishes to proceed as so, where a more detailed report and analysis of our choice of investment destination will be presented to him, or perhaps his representative acting on his behalf.

Once again, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr Turner for his confidence in the Bank of Yohannes. Should there be any issues requiring further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me immediately.

Nā mātou, nā,
Sir Grant Wellington

Frequently Asked Questions [FAQ]

Postby Yohannes » Tue May 27, 2014 5:47 pm

Frequently Asked Questions

OOC: Alright, since many of NationStates' players are more familiar with guns, ships and you know.. military stuff in general (and don't realise the importance of the economy and wealth for their nations), I have created this OOC/out-of-character FAQ to answer some of the most common questions telegrammed to me by interested potential clients/nations so far.

So... I hear you are finally releasing some of your shares for sale? What are the rules?
Yes! The Board of Directors of the Bank of Yohannes(TM) has decided to release our 2014 non-voting, ordinary shares for sale to the international community. What are the rules? Well, there will be a total of 107,537,688,442,211.10 [107.537 trillion] shares for sale - totaling 10% of our current market capitalisation. Every single one player (represented by an entity originating from their nation) can only buy up to 100 million shares, to prevent the usual GE&T silly behaviour of 'I buy 25%/50%/100% of your companieh in one go!' To apply to buy our 2014 released shares, [click me!]

How do this bank work as both an in-character [IC] institution and storefront in the NationStates roleplaying world?
Well, its actually quite simple. Unlike some GE&T NationStates banks out there, we will not give you false-promise of 'high return' or interest for putting your money in our bank, because unlike some other banks out there, we are not a multi-trillion ponzi scheme. Instead, we will provide you with summarised details of what each account's reasonable rate of return is, while at the same time guaranteeing you with the opportunity to invest, participate with us, the owner of the leading financial service & banking network: spread in over 400 roleplayed nations and countless roleplaying regions (and non-roleplaying centric regions too).

Image
We strive to play our part as one of the
world's engines of growth
Wait.. did you just say 'multi-trillion ponzi scheme'?
You've heard that right.. I've just said that we are not a 'multi-trillion ponzi-scheme' institution. Unlike some banking institutions on NationStates roleplaying world, we make sure that we are always earning more as well as making more money - to put it quite simply - from our net interest income - from our lending operation worldwide - as well as other income. We've always ensured - with the exception of admittedly a few exceptional cases - that we have always charged higher interest for our lending operation, in comparison to our rate of return if you are putting money in our bank. Hence, why you will not have to worry about us taking your 'money' to pay for the next person-down-the-list's rate of return. We are trying to be as realistic as possible, and that includes not operating as a glorified ponzi-scheme institution.

Why are you only providing a list of 'Accounts' on offer? Why not follow others' example and the display for your various services: such as 'Investment', 'Credit Rating', you know.. the usual NationStates fluff...?
Because the Bank of Yohannes do not follow others' trend. Instead, we follow our own principle and create our own trend, and not follow others. And beside, what kind of a financial service & banking institution will publicly announce their bottom-line 'interest you must pay us for lending you the capital you need'? That is one of the most silliest thing you can do.. because that would certainly reduce - or in some cases with the ponzi-scheme institutions out there, destroy - your own profit margin considerably! We also do not 'give' you 'credit rating', because that is just silly and unrealistic. Do you really expect us to look through your entire history of in-character [IC] posts made throughout the NationStates Roleplaying world's diplomacy forums... uhmm... no thanks? Hehe

So... I will get free 'money' if I deposit/give you or store 'money' from my government/alliance/business/company/organisation/etc.?
Yes, that is pretty much the benefit for you to bank with us. Though that is rather a simplistic way of answering your [admittedly also simplistic] question.

Can I store 'money' in your bank, for safety? Apparently Whatyoucallit-ian Empire is going to invade my nation soon... and I am awaiting his 'Invasion' thread with bated breath!
Yes! That is a smart way of doing it - store your 'money' in our bank, and you can be sure Whatyoucallit-ian Empire will not have the economic, diplomatic nor military capabilities to threaten the Kingdom of Yohannes -- with the exception of a selected and very few nations out there, of which His Majesty's Government is allied or having close connection with.

Why are you really fixated with foreign direct investment.. instead of the more widespread passive management or securities?
Because the diplomatic and geo-political condition of NationStates Roleplaying world - and the nature of its 'world diplomacy' setting - resembles more of 18th century to early 20th century real life world condition, where there are many, many competing powers, surpassed by fewer greater powers that by no means will respect nor ensure that any kind of 'securities' or 'guarantee' will not be broken. There is no dominant single power structure in the NationStates roleplaying world, and thus whoever deals with 'securities' or 'guarantee' and try to bring about that kind of deals... are either idealistic at best, or downright too trusting of other governments. Just because maybe it is the most popular in real life, does not mean that I can apply it to NS Rping world as if the condition of both worlds are the same (that will simply be copy-pasting stuff blindly).

Foreign direct as well as the usual 'loans' are a lot simpler to explain - as many NationStates players out there will find the terms easy to understand - to offer toward other NationStates roleplayers. From my own experience of roleplaying so far, FDI - of whatever forms - and the typical [rather simplistic] 'loan' are more welcomed by players out there (thus ensuring the Bank of Yohannes actually acquire clients, and people borrowing from us). People tend to be confused - or intimidated, and therefore losing interest in our prospective deal - when I started to offer other forms of investment plan not familiar to them. And thus, I approach this whole problem with a rather simple solution: when it can be done without making it too complex.. then there is no need to make it more complicated for your potential customers to understand.

Image
For nearly 200 years, we have assisted
businesses to thrive, and economies
to prosper
Is it true that your bank was responsible for the 2012 recession of various nations out there?
Yes, and I hold full responsibility for that, though unique the circumstance as it was, for I could not avoid taking the consequences [or ignoring outside developments for selfish reason] of roleplaying in the NationStates world with the rest of other players. Nothing of that kind of thing will happen again, though, as I am pretty much over - and not interested in - the whole 'power-gaming' side of this game quite sometime ago. And finally, that whole 'recession' scenario was - looking back now - very funny and rather something quite ridiculous OOC and IC-wise.

So.. if I fill the application to establish branches and offices in my nation.. what will be the benefit for me?
Duh.. higher number of jobs available for your people, high-quality banking practice that will ensure the salaries of your people working in our branches and offices are kept relatively high in comparison to world standard (so we are not going to employ/hire cheap workforce in your nation), more capital -and reputably sourced at that - made available for ambitious new entrepreneurs, dreamy first homeowners, and mum-and-dad newbie investors of your nation? and many, many more...

You seems to talk as if you know a lot about finance & banking?
LOL no. I am just an amateur Law & Science student who happen to have a couple of 3rd year Commerce & Accounting friends as my flatmates this year. And we are just doing this whole thing for fun, anyway, and will not try to claim that we know stuff. What we can say, however, is we will not do ridiculous things.. or stuff that are outside the boundary of common sense and semi-realism.

That budget... the trillions and trillions...
Yes, I know. If you are capping your population - that is, you are not using your NationStates page population - then worry not, for I am rather quite a flexible person! The value and whole structure of the bank will be scaled down (probably by around 10,000 times smaller, that should be similar to real life) so that we can accomodate your style of roleplaying. I am primarily capping my population too - at 7 million people - by the way... so rest assure that even I myself do not primarily use NationStates page population. The default NationStates page population-applied financial highlights & organisation of the bank is only there to act as the default NationStates structure of the bank, as the majority of roleplayers out there do not cap their population.

Dear Sir/Madam, allow me to express my sincere gratitude for the generosity and goodwill of your represented government. We may have not come across one another in the past - with barely a semblance of existing financial & trade network connecting both the Technocracy of Luxemthanian and the Kingdom of Yohannes - yet, the letter of goodwill announcing your altruistic decision to help finance our Economic Growth for Developing Nations Scheme [EGDNS] has shown the respect and deep admiration both of our represented nations have held for one another.

As Group Finance Director of the Bank of Yohannes, I would like to extend our unique offering: the Government Fund account. The Government Fund type of accounts are handed only following case-by-case analysis of select governments overseas having close bilateral diplomatic relationship with His Majesty's Government. And although it is similar to the Cash Fund account in summary, balances and returns are further guaranteed - and will be given prioritisation over Cash Fund accounts - by His Majesty's Government. I would like to, in effect, humbly invite your represented government to bank with our institution.

I await the decision and letter of your represented government.

Greetings Mr Morenz, it is a pleasure for I myself to receive your represented business' letter of interest. Sir Matthew Gilligan has received your proposal for the establishment of a corporate partnership with our institution. I would like to humbly offer my deepest apology, Mr Morenz, for Sir Gilligan - in his position as Group Chairman of the Bank of Yohannes - has kindly rejected your proposal. The underlying rationale behind Sir Gilligan's decision is due to the fact that we - as an organisation - are currently endeavouring to decrease expenditures deemed as uncritical to our business profitability and market expansion opportunities internationally, to minimise unnecessary spending considerably.

We acknowledge the goodwill and sincerity behind your initiative and proposal, and would like to therefore assure you that, in the future whereas your represented business will require further support for expansion projects, the Bank of Yohannes will gladly intervene and assist - while at the same time providing you with an attractive, sensible commercial lending rate - in our capacity as one of the many reputable source of capital for growing businesses of the world.

Once again, I would like to apologise, and hope for your understanding as to the basis behind our decision to refuse your kind proposal. Should there be any issues requiring further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me immediately.

Te Whanganui-a-Tara (English: Wellington) is the capital city and one of the four constituent states of Yohannes. With a population of 1.7 million [OOC: if you are roleplaying with NationStates page population, then I will too, and you can disregard the population-capped basic information provided here, and assume I am roleplaying with my NationStates population and a much larger area/economy], Te Whanganui-a-Tara is the most populous city, urban area, and state of the Kingdom.

Located in the northern coast of the nation, facing the continent of Alisna to the north, the capital city is the economic centre of Yohannes. The city-state is home to various large businesses in the Kingdom: such as the Bank of Yohannes, ensuring the city's position as the financial & banking centre of the world. It is also home to multiple branches of some of the largest GE&T index-listed foreign multinational companies operating throughout the Kingdom, such as CuppaCoffee, Maritime Imperial and VLT.

Te Whanganui-a-Tara is infamous for its atrocious weather - consecutive raining days, notorious wind and its cold temperature - and as such, has been criticised as one of the world's 'most terrible city to live in.' Its population - almost a quarter of the Kingdom's total population - are renowned for their sombre moods: where anxiety, depression and the obsessively gloomy nature of its people are the [majority] rule of the day, resulting in one of the highest rate of per capita attempted suicide in the world. The urban population of the city 'rarely will greet strangers', 'pronounce the word sorry in the case of bumping accidentally with you', and are 'prone to [almost] always entirely ignore bus accident victims.'

Nevertheless, Te Whanganui-a-Tara has cemented its position as the cultural, economic and political centre of the Kingdom - with the highest number of research institutes, museums, orchestras, and sporting events hosted per year in Yohannes. The city hosted over 300 foreign embassies and consulates last year, and also is home to the most educated [both tertiary-institutional and polytechnic-wise] and skilled of the Kingdom's population and workforce - with the highest number of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications recorded in Yohannes, residing in its capital city.

As the governing body of the city and state, hereby our Chamber of Commerce - in full representation of the amalgamated Te Whanganui-a-Tara City & Regional [Supercity] Council and Te Whanganui-a-Tara Chamber of Commerce - would like to invite foreign businesses, enterprises, institutions and organisations to expand - open their branches or perhaps foreign offices, establish their foreign logistical centres, manufacturing plants or distribution centres, etc. - in the capital city of Yohannes: Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

⁇ Etymology

The name Te Whanganui-a-Tara originated from the Papatuuanuku tribe's decision to establish an 'entrepot of wealth' beside the Weir river delta. 'Te Whanganui-a-Tara' is roughly translated in English to 'City along [the] wide river' or 'the [great] harbour', a reflection of the respect Papatuuanuku tribe had for the land. As a result of its rather lengthy name, most English speakers abroad commonly simplify the city - and its surrounding metropolitan area - as 'Wellington', or 'Greater Wellington'. Despite the effort of His Majesty's Government to combat the 'butchering of Yohānnesi names by the dominant English speakers of this world', and the English-ification of many Yohānnesi words by young Yohannesians, the trend has proven to be a development too strong to tackle.

⌛ History

Serenity Triad Period (407-1508)

The earliest discovery of historical account originating from Te Whanganui-a-Tara is simultaneously the oldest engraved record in Yohannesian history. It recognised - albeit somewhat vaguely - the original home of the three indigenous tribal ancestors of today's 'First People'. Andrew Pipitea - the renowned Yohannesian historian of the 16th century, translated the inscription, describing of its rather 'lacking' content, and revealing that the three tribes had migrated from a 'semi-tropical, far-flung continent west of Yohannes and the region the nation is located in.' Not surprisingly, national historians of our Kingdom have for long debated as to whether, 'Pipitea's [and the object]'s claim should be taken with anything other than a grain of salt.'

Nevertheless, it was widely recognised - following the revelation of other artefacts - that the three tribes were able to successfully adapt to Yohannes' cool to warm temperate climate, upon their arrival to the island around the 5th century. The island's relative isolation for the next ten centuries ensured the insulated evolution of the three tribes: establishing in the process a moderately advanced social structure, society and economic activity throughout Yohannes. Coastal and inland trading operations were conducted between the three tribes - and their sub-tribal divisions - while ethos, governing method and relatively civilised tradition as well as system of beliefs were spread throughout the land.

With the exception of the rather aggressive and war-like Papatuuanuku tribe, the three main tribes of Yohannes' early historical period engaged in relatively peaceful terms toward their neighbours. It was around the early 14th century that the largest, and most advanced, of the tribes - that of the Ranginui - established the trading port of 'Te Whanganui-a-Tara', roughly translated in English to 'City along [the] wide river' or 'the [great] harbour.' By the end of the 16th century, the newly established city had grown to become the largest coastal establishment and trading port of the the three tribes' land.

Enlightenment & Industrialisation Period (1508-1831)

Te Whanganui-a-Tara in 1610Image
It was in 1508 that the ancestors of today's Pākehās - Yohannesians of immigrant ancestry or 'light complexion citizens' of our nation first arrived. These individuals introduced new technologies, created an entirely supply and demand composition on our market, and spread ideas of enlightenment as well as modern institution throughout our island. Our Great Chief at the time conceded that to safeguard our future sovereignty and continuance as a small nation, the adoption of these technological wonders' integration to benefit Yohannes must be advocated. The Great Chief and Tribal Council's 'To promenade Yohannes into the enlightened world' (PTIEW) policy was then implemented, sometime during the 1520s. As its realisation would be crucial to Yohannes' future existence as an independent unified entity, widespread education was required to enlighten the general population of our people.

And so this decade was consequently the time that Yohannes first realised the establishment of our 'Education for all' policy, where public education was made available to every subject of the Great Chief. Our tribal council realised the importance of not simply imitating the practice of these Pākehās, but also at the same time adopting as well as incorporating the positive aspects of their culture, while maintaining the essential meaning and core values of Yohannesian culture. 'We learn what is require [for the sake of progress]... and leave out what is not required', the 3rd Great Chief Hongi Tika once explained to the elders.

In 1604, the tribal council and elders unanimously accepted the suggestion of the Great Chief that Yohannes must adopt its own version of monarchy, to resemble the form of governments of these Pakepakehas. One member of the council suggested that perhaps our land should adopt the principle of democratic participation in the form of a republic. He was quickly shunned by his fellow members, ruling out the possibility of such a form of government as 'too foreign for us to adopt, and for our people to accept.' After careful consideration, it was decided that the ideal political system of a future Yohannes would be that of a constitutionally-bound hereditary monarchy, with an elected head of government and executive body democratically elected by the people, and for the people.

Government-funded missions - composed of at least two senior government staff accompanied by representatives of local businesses and education institutions - were dispatched to various 'enlightened' nations, with those having distinctive political freedom and civil rights as well as the existence of rule of law and an advanced education system chosen as preferred destinations. At the same time as our knowledge of social institutions and responsible governance under one rule of law was expanding, our people were building houses, halls and temples on land claimed from previously unexplored forests. We adopted pakepakeha method of navigation, production and organisation: with the initial assistance of Pakepakeha instructors for the first 58 years of our PTIEW enlightenment programme.

Te Whanganui-a-Tara was the first to benefit from this gradual economic, socio-educational and political transformation throughout Yohannes.

Finance & Banking Transformation (1831-1928)

Image

The spread of industrialisation and modernisation throughout Yohannes for most of the mid 19th century had transformed Te Whanganui-a-Tara considerably: its economic capacity, productive efficiency and population expanded dramatically, further consolidating its position as the main hub of transportation and economic centre of the young island nation. Surrounding suburbs were created, new industries established, and the elite of the Kingdom's newly and fast growing educated class made the city-state their home.

In 1837, following the abdication of His Majesty Wiremu II, the fourteen sagacious elders of His Majesty's Council dictated the privatisation of the previously state-sponsored and partially controlled Parenga mō te Tipu (English: Bank for National Growth), Parenga mo te Whānau (Bank for Family) and Pēke Whetereihana o ngā Kaiahuwhenua (Federated Farmers' Bank), under one institutional umbrella with the objective of creating a strong vehicle for national growth in the face of strong international competition, the establishment of a compulsory, work-based saving scheme for the Yohannesian people, and the expansion of a strong overseas financial & banking network for our Kingdom. Unlike most banking institutions of the time - to finance the defence and military projects of their respective governments - the Bank of Yohannes was established to primarily support Yohannesian enterprises as well as strengthen the nation's finance & banking sector relative to its overseas counterparts.

It succeeded in doing so, and by the beginning of the 20th century, Yohannesian finance & banking network and principle - led by the Bank of Yohannes - can be found in no less than 200 nations worldwide, with various prominent clients entrusting the Kingdom of Yohannes with their wealth as a financial safe haven.
