Role: The Reparation low-cost cruise missile (LCCM) was developed in response to a Ministry of War tender for an inexpensive, intermediate-range precision munition capable of being produced in large quantities by allied industry. The resulting weapon is a lightweight, low-observability missile derived in large part from earlier-generation air-defense training and target-decoy technology.
The Reparation's low mass and relatively simple construction allow it to be launched from a wide variety of aerial platform The design deliberately sacrifices payload and guidance sophistication in favor of low unit cost, ease of manufacture, and compatibility with a broad range of launch platforms.
Launch: The Reparation can be carried by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Its low launch weight permits relatively small aircraft to carry multiple missiles, while helicopter carriage provides a means of employing the weapon from dispersed forward positions. Potential ground and maritime launch platforms are still in testing.
Technology: The standard Reparation LCCM uses GNSS-assisted inertial navigation to reach its designated target. Its navigation system consists of a 32-antenna GNSS receiver backed by a basic digital inertial navigation package incorporating a modified commercial accelerometer. The missile's relatively simple flight computer and guidance system are intended for use against fixed or otherwise predictable light industrial and military targets for which its 135 kg high-explosive warhead is considered sufficient.
The baseline Reparation is deliberately designed around commercially available and easily substituted components. Its approximate unit cost is $15,000, allowing it to be manufactured and expended on a scale impractical for more sophisticated cruise missiles.
The Reparation-M incorporates a substantially more capable guidance and communications suite. It adds EO/IR terminal guidance, a broadband satellite communications link, a mesh communications system, and an upgraded onboard navigation computer. These additions permit the missile to operate in several modes beyond the largely autonomous baseline model.
In particular, Reparation-M missiles can receive updated guidance information during flight and exchange targeting information with other missiles in the same salvo. This permits cooperative employment: for example, a missile approaching one designated target can report the target's status to other missiles, allowing a second missile to be redirected toward a secondary target where appropriate. The communications system also permits operators to modify the missile's intended target or flight path after launch, subject to the capabilities of the available navigation and communications network.
The Reparation-M is consequently considerably more expensive than the baseline missile, but retains the fundamental advantages of the original design: low weight, broad launch-platform compatibility, and the ability to exploit existing industrial capacity for inexpensive mass production.
