MV-24A Erne

Overview:

The MV-24A Erne is an extremely versatile aircraft, designed to operate along side heavy lift helicopters like the MV-22, as a replacement for the aging SH-60 Seahawk. The Erne is smaller than both aircraft and capable of being folded into a space-saving configuration which makes it 25% smaller than the MV-22 in a similar configuration.

Aerodynamics & Layout:

The MV-24 is laid out much like the V-22 Osprey, with a dual tiltrotor design, but an extremely small footprint compared to it's larger cousin. A fly-by-wire system is used to control the flight surfaces, especially as high-speeds, however there is a backup manual system in place, should either the FBW or hydraulics be destroyed.

It's low profile and unique vertical stabilizer give the MV-24 unmatched manoeuverability over conventional attack helicopters. Combined with it's high top-speed and great lifiting capability, the Erne is one of the best replacements for most naval helicopters.

Avionics and Electronic Countermeasures Systems:

The MV-24 comes equipped with several advanced avionics and ECM systems installed, although some listed will be restricted from export and these items will be properly noted.

1. AN/ALQ-144(V)1 Counter-Measures System. The AN/ALQ-144 system is an omni-directional active infrared Countermeasures Set which protects the MV-44, V-24, V-22 (and numerous other) aircraft from air-to-air and ground-to-air heat seeking (infrared) missiles. The airborne installed system included in this family of equipment are designed to provide jamming of threat IR missile systems. They are active, continuous operating, omni-directional, electrically fuel-fired IR jamming systems designed to confuse or decoy threat IR missile systems.
   
2. AN/ALQ-211 Suite of Integrated Radio Frequency Countermeasures (SIRFC). The Suite of Integrated Radio Frequency Countermeasures (SIRFC) is an integrated electronic countermeasures system which provides RF threat awareness and active self-protection jamming capabilities for aircraft against RF air defense systems actively engaging the aircraft. The SIRFC will have application on scout/attack, utility, cargo, special operations, and special electronic mission aircraft. The SIRFC will provide defensive, offensive, active and passive countermeasures (ECM) to ensure optimum protection against Active, Pulse Doppler, Pulse, Monopulse Radar, and Continuous Wave radars.
   
3. AN/ALE-47 Countermeasures Dispenser System. The ALE-47 Countermeasure Dispenser System is an active, integrated, reprogrammable, computer controlled system to dispense expendables/decoys, designed to employ electronic and infrared countermeasures according to a program developed and implemented by the aircrew.
   
4. AN/ALE-43 Chaff Dispensing System. The AN/ALE-43 (ALE-43) chaff cutter dispensing system provides the electronic warfare operator with the option of selecting, while in flight, various tuned dipole lengths to meet changing threats in frequency ranges from A- to K-band. The concept of cutting chaff from a continuous supply to various dipole lengths, while in flight, has numerous advantages. The limitation in utilizing the 'cutter' concept for chaff countermeasures prior to the ALE-43 was the lack of a suitable chaff supply material.

The MV-24A also comes equipped with an AN/APX-114 IFF (Identification Friend-or-Foe) system and a AN/APQ-158 navigational TFR (Terrain Following RADAR). This allows the MV-24A to operate in nearly any environment at nearly any time, giving it unmatched versatility.

1. AN/APX-114 Identification Friend-or-Foe. The AN/APX-114 Airborne Interrogator initiates an IFF inquiry and provides the advanced processing capability to positively identify friendly targets. The system is designed with a Versa Module Eurocard (VME) open architecture that enables maximum system flexibility and leads to practical upgrades. The architecture is driven by a Power PC processor that provides a throughput of 14,000 replies per second, target processing and platform interface. An IFF signal processing card incorporates Raytheon’s Very Large Scale Integration (VSLI) reply decoder chipset, which uses leading-edge pulse detection techniques. The APX 114 platform interfaces include Mil-STD-1553B, RS-232, Ethernet and RS-422. The 2.5-kilowatt transmitter and receiver sensitivity of -83 dBm will meet or exceed the link margin required for any airborne applications.

Cockpit Interface:

The crew sits in a tandem cockpit, with the gunner at the bottom seat and the pilot on the top, like most attack helicopters, however this tandem seating is unique for transport aircraft. The consoles have touch-screen OLEDs that provide essential data not displayed on the HUD, which greatly reduces clutter. Borrowing the design from the MV-44 Caracara, GA's engineers have created another amalgamation of a helmet display.

The Helmet Mounted Combat-Oriented Display System (HMCODS) provides the pilot with 360-degree situational awareness, through the use of an eye-tracking HUD and direct retinal projection, which uses a low-power laser to project a HUD onto the pilot's eyeball. This means in the event of a crack or damage to the helmet, the HUD will not be disrupted in any way.

MV-44A Caracara

Overview:

The MV-44A Caracara was based heavily on one of Bell Helicopter's previous designs, the Quad Tiltrotor, which itself was based loosely on the V-22 Osprey. Global Armaments America picked up the pieces when Bell abandoned the project. We set out to create a helicopter that would be able to provide a tactical, highly mobile, heavy-lift, V/STOL capability to replace L3 Communication's aging fleet of C-130s. It also provides a similar lifting capacity to C-130, allowing Marine units to easily deliver larger amounts of men and supplies without the need for a costly amphibious assault.

Aerodynamics & Layout:

The most notable feature of the MV-44 would be it's four-engine, tiltrotor design which gives it the ability to take off vertically like a helicopter and achieve a high top-speed similar to larger turbo-prop aircraft. Combined with it's extremely impressive lift ability, equivalent to the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules, makes the Caracara the perfect replacement choice. While it's massive size makes it somewhat unwieldy in small areas, it still boasts one of, if not the, highest lift capacities for any modern military helicopter.

The unconventional design of the MV-44 gives it a relatively low profile, since it forgoes any sort of vertical stabilizer. This is negated by the inclusion of a dual-wing assembly, as well as the tilting ability of the engines themselves, as well as the highly-advanced fly-by-wire system. Four of the crewmembers sit in the aircraft's cockpit, with the fifth usually being stationed in the rear cargo hold.

3. AN/ALE-47 Countermeasures Dispenser System. The ALE-47 Countermeasure Dispenser System is an active, integrated, reprogrammable, computer controlled system to dispense expendables/decoys, designed to employ electronic and infrared countermeasures according to a program developed and implemented by the aircrew.
   
4. AN/ALQ-131 Self-Protection Jamming Pod. The ALQ-131 ECM Pod is modular in design containing various electronic receivers, antennas, and powerful transmitters designed to alter the flight path of an incoming enemy missile. This modular pod-mounted system can be configured to cope with a range of threats, spread over one to five frequency bands, by selecting individual modules for inclusion in the pod, the user can configure pod to handle threats. Both noise and deception-jamming modes are available, and the pod can be reprogrammed to match the expected threat. The pod is controlled from the cockpit by both automatic and manual means. The cockpit control indicator is used to turn the system on, enable threat response actions, and display system status. ECM pods are pre-programmed on the ground for specific threats that may be encountered.*
   
5. AN/ALE-43 Chaff Dispensing System. The AN/ALE-43 (ALE-43) chaff cutter dispensing system provides the electronic warfare operator with the option of selecting, while in flight, various tuned dipole lengths to meet changing threats in frequency ranges from A- to K-band. The concept of cutting chaff from a continuous supply to various dipole lengths, while in flight, has numerous advantages. This radar offers high-resolution ground mapping that enables accurate low-level navigation and precision aerial drops, predictive windshear detection in all weather conditions, and situational awareness for all-weather formation flying. It has since then been adapted for use on the MV-44 by Global Armaments.

Cockpit Interface:

The advanced cockpit borrows numerous innovations from other aircraft, including Honeywell's M142 IHADSS and VSI's Joint-Helmet Mounted Cueing System, Night Vision Cueing & Display and the Helmet Mounted Display System. This produced something quite amazing. Combined with an eye-tracking system, which allows the HMD to follow the pilot's eyes, it allows near 100% situational awareness for the pilot.

The HUD is entirely customizable to the pilot's preferences, allowing them to move, enlarge and change any element, including altitude, fuel gauge, estimated fuel time, RWR warnings, etc. The console is equipped with several touchscreens and voice commands for non-essential functions, drastically cutting down on the amount of clutter and allowing the pilots to stay focused on their tasks. Missile warnings and other alerts are announced by a flashing of the screen and audio warning.

AV-24B Gyrfalcon

Overview:

Designed as an escort for both the MV-22 and MV-24, the AV-24B was based heavily on Bell-Boeing's specifications for a "V-22 Escort" tiltrotor, although the actual dimensions were closer to the MV-24 or MV-22. It was primarily advertised as a replacement for lightweight CAS/COIN aircraft such as the OV-10 Bronco and IA 58 Pucara, instead of an escort aircraft for heavy-lift aircraft. It is capable of mounting many of the same weapons as both aircraft, including the Mk 4 and SUU-11/A gunpods, and 5" Zuni rockets.

The AV-24B Gyrfalcon was based on the MV-24A Erne, however, it was extensively modified to turn into what essentially amounts as a flying tank. Half of aircraft's inside cargo hold was converted into space for the it's numerous countermeasures and partially to store ammunition for it's mounted guns. Hardpoints were added onto the wings, along with the ESSS stub wings, giving the Gyrfalcon unparalleled weapons capacity.

While it still retains a partial ability to carry infantrymen, the most common use for the Gyrfalcon's storage space is to carry additional ammunition reloads, giving it the ability to rearm two AV-24s, including itself. This dramatically increases the force projection abilities of the AV-24 and allows a squadron of Gyrfalcons to continue an attack without returning to base to rearm. It's inflight refueling ability gives it practically infinite range, making it an extremely versatile aircraft for any situation.

The Electro-Optic Missile Sensors (EOMS, baseline four for ATIRCM and six for CMWS) passively detect the presence of energy within a specific band of interest, and transmit information to the ECU.*

AN/ALQ-212 Advanced Threat Infrared Countermeasures (ATIRCM) baseline consists of three subsystems: the Common Missile Warning System (CMWS), the Advanced Threat Infrared Jammer (ATIRJ), and the Improved Countermeasures Dispenser (ICMD). These three subsystems are fully integrated through the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ATIRJ counters IR-guided missile systems using information from the CMWS through the ECU to locate and jam with direct laser and lamp energy.*
   
6. AN/ALE-43 Chaff Dispensing System. The Longbow Fire Control Radar with its distinctive mast mounted antenna is a 35 GHz radar system for the detection, location, classification and prioritization of tactical targets. The AV-44B is armed with the Lockheed Martin/Boeing AGM-114D Longbow Hellfire air-to-surface missile which has a millimeter wave seeker which allows the missile to perform in full fire and forget mode. Range is 8km to 12km. The Longbow Fire Control Radar and its weapons counterpart, the radar-guided, "fire and forget" Longbow Hellfire missile, enable the potent Gyrfalcon attack helicopter to detect, classify and prioritize ground targets day or night, in poor weather and obscured conditions; then attack those targets with pinpoint accuracy from ranges that safeguard the lives of the aircrew.

The Helmet Mounted Combat-Oriented Display System (HMCODS) provides the pilot with near 360-degree situational awareness, through the use of an eye-tracking HUD or direct retinal projection, which uses a low-power laser to project a HUD onto the pilot's eyeball, allowing the HUD to follow the pilot as he/she looks around the aircraft.

The primary gun, a nose-mounted GAU-12/U Equalizer, is set up in a free-moving mount similar to the AH-64's chaingun. It is connected to a small mount, with 95 degrees of freedom longitudinal and 178 degrees of freedom lateral, which is slaved to either the gunner or, in the event of crew incapacitation, the pilot's HMCODS. Wherever the gunner looks, the gun follows, as it is also slaved to the eye-tracking system. The gunner can, also, choose to view his target through the integrated FLIR module installed in the nose of the AV-24.

AV-44B Bateleur

Overview:

The AV-44B Bateleur is Global Armament's answer to Lockheed Martin's AC-130U Spectre. It is equipped with many of the same weapons systems, including the GAU-12/U Equalizer and M102 105mm howitzer. It also has an upgraded suite of EW and ECM countermeasures and includes the ability to add additional fuel drop tanks via hardpoints on the wings. It is overall based on the MV-44, but almost all of the cargo space has been taken up by added weapons.

The aircraft is deployable from most modern LHDs and aircraft carriers, giving any modern Expeditionary Strike Force an unparalleled level of force projection that is able to rearmed and refueled at the frontline and able to support friendly ground forces faster than the AC-130.

Seven of the crewmembers sit in the aircraft's cockpit,, with the remaining five being stationed in the rear cargo hold along with the guns. The AV-44's advanced computer systems have all but elimated the onboard flight engineer.

Avionics and Electronic Countermeasures Systems:

The AV-44 comes equipped with several advanced avionics installed, although some listed will be restricted from export and these items will be properly noted.

1. AN/ALQ-144(V)1 Counter-Measures System. The AN/ALQ-144 system is an omni-directional active infrared Countermeasures Set which protects the AV-44, V-24, V-22 (and numerous other) aircraft from air-to-air and ground-to-air heat seeking (infrared) missiles. The airborne installed system included in this family of equipment are designed to provide jamming of threat IR missile systems. They are active, continuous operating, omni-directional, electrically fuel-fired IR jamming systems designed to confuse or decoy threat IR missile systems.
   
2. AN/AAQ-24 Directional Infrared Countermeasure System "NEMESIS". Designed by Northrop-Grumman Corporation, the AN/AAQ-24 DIRCM uses a high-powered laser to disrupt any heat-seeking missiles fired against the aircraft. When NEMESIS detects a missile launch, it determines if it is a threat, warns the aircrew and activates its high-power, laser-based countermeasure system to track and defeat the threat.*
   
3. AN/ALE-47 Countermeasures Dispenser System. The ALE-47 Countermeasure Dispenser System is an active, integrated, reprogrammable, computer controlled system to dispense expendables/decoys, designed to employ electronic and infrared countermeasures according to a program developed and implemented by the aircrew.
   
4. AN/ALQ-131 Self-Protection Jamming Pod. The ALQ-131 ECM Pod is modular in design containing various electronic receivers, antennas, and powerful transmitters designed to alter the flight path of an incoming enemy missile. This modular pod-mounted system can be configured to cope with a range of threats, spread over one to five frequency bands, by selecting individual modules for inclusion in the pod, the user can configure pod to handle threats. Both noise and deception-jamming modes are available, and he pod can be reprogrammed to match the expected threat. The pod is controlled from the cockpit by both automatic and manual means. The cockpit control indicator is used to turn the system on, enable threat response actions, and display system status. ECM pods are pre-programmed on the ground for specific threats that may be encountered.*
   
5. AN/ALE-43 Chaff Dispensing System. The AN/ALE-43 (ALE-43) chaff cutter dispensing system provides the electronic warfare operator with the option of selecting, while in flight, various tuned dipole lengths to meet changing threats in frequency ranges from A- to K-band. The concept of cutting chaff from a continuous supply to various dipole lengths, while in flight, has numerous advantages. The limitation in utilizing the 'cutter' concept for chaff countermeasures prior to the ALE-43 was the lack of a suitable chaff supply material.

The AV-44 also comes equipped with a standard AN/APX-114 IFF (Identification Friend-or-Foe) and AN/APQ-170 TFR (Terrain-Following RADAR).

1. AN/APX-114 Identification Friend-or-Foe. The AN/APX-114 Airborne Interrogator initiates an IFF inquiry and provides the advanced processing capability to positively identify friendly targets. The system is designed with a Versa Module Eurocard (VME) open architecture that enables maximum system flexibility and leads to practical upgrades. The architecture is driven by a Power PC processor that provides a throughput of 14,000 replies per second, target processing and platform interface. An IFF signal processing card incorporates Raytheon’s Very Large Scale Integration (VSLI) reply decoder chipset, which uses leading-edge pulse detection techniques. The APX 114 platform interfaces include Mil-STD-1553B, RS-232, Ethernet and RS-422. The 2.5-kilowatt transmitter and receiver sensitivity of -83 dBm will meet or exceed the link margin required for any airborne applications.
   
2. AN/APN-241 Terrain Following/Navigational RADAR. Northrop-Grumman's AN/APN-241 radar was developed specifically for the C-130 mission and operational requirements. This radar offers high-resolution ground mapping that enables accurate low-level navigation and precision aerial drops, predictive windshear detection in all weather conditions, and situational awareness for all-weather formation flying. It has since then been adapted for use on the AV-44 and MV-44 by Global Armaments.

Cockpit Interface:

The advanced cockpit borrows numerous innovations from other aircraft, including Honeywell's M142 IHADSS and VSI's Joint-Helmet Mounted Cueing System, Night Vision Cueing & Display and the Helmet Mounted Display System. This produced something quite amazing. Combined with an eye-tracking system, which allows the HMD to follow the pilot's eyes, it allows near 100% situational awareness for the pilot.

The HUD is entirely customizable to the pilot's preferences, allowing them to move, enlarge and change any element, including altitude, fuel gauge, estimated fuel time, RWR warnings, etc. The console is equipped with several touchscreens and voice commands for non-essential functions, drastically cutting down on the amount of clutter and allowing the pilots to stay focused on their tasks. Missile warnings and other alerts are announced by a flashing of the screen and audio warning.
