Background: The proliferation of nerve agents such as tabun, sarin, VX, and the more advanced Novichok category of nerve agents (A-230, A-232, C01-A035) has forced both military forces and civil defense authorities around the globe to rethink their responses to the threat of these weapons. In addition to a direct combat threat, nerve agents can also pose a threat in areas where chemical warfare has occurred (for example, equipment that has been exposed to cyclosarin can carry sufficient amounts of residue to injure persons months and even years after initial exposure). In some cases, chemicals with a similar mechanism of action (though, blessedly, far less lethal) are also used in industry.

Even a small quantity of nerve agent a victim’s skin can lead to horrifying injury or death. Victims exposed to cyclosarin will experience awful symptoms within minutes of exposure, including horrific convulsions, loss of consciousness, paralysis, and so forth, often culminating in a gruesome and humiliating death.

These facts have forced Allanean Pharmaceuticals to bring to the market a series of automatic atropine injectors designed to be rapidly used by any person.

Technology:
Three different types of autoinjectors are currently produced:
2 milligrams (black cap):For adults and children older than 10 years of age or with a body mass of over 41 kilograms (82 pounds).
1 milligrams (red cap): Children with the age of 4-10 or with a body mass of between 18 and 41 kg.
0.5 milligrams (green cap): Children 6 months to 4 years of age with a body weight 7 to 18 kg.

To make use of the RespiteTM autoinjector, the trained user removes the yellow safety cap, and then forcibly jams the colorful cap forward into the outer thigh of the patient (this may be the user themselves, or a person who is unconscious or otherwise unable to self-administer). The autoinjector contains a spring-loaded needle capable of piercing most clothing. After the injection is complete and the autoinjector removed, the needle can be folded to attach the empty injector to the patient’s clothing, to serve as an indicator of the dosage that the injured person has received.

Atropine is a highly dangerous substance. Organizations issuing atropine autoinjectors should provide training in their use. Atropine is not a replacement to appropriate medical assistance, and is only intended to allow the victims of chemical weapon attacks or organophospate pesticide poisoning to survive to be given appropriate medical attention. Atropine has severe side effects and medical personnel must be made aware that the injured person has received atropine as an antidote. Allanean Pharmaceuticals is not responsible for any injuries that may result from improper use of atropine.
