The UGS-S-280 sensor is visually near-identical to the AM-50 landmine. This is intended to encourage enemy sappers to destroy the sensor upon discovery and to enable the UGS-S-280 to be deployed from mine dispensers.

Background:In response to the escalating demand for real-time data collection during on-ground security operations, the defense industry sought to devise cost-effective, swift deployment sensor systems for tactical and operational monitoring of potential threats. The 1960s saw the emergence of air-droppable sensor packs, each weighing around twenty kilograms, resembling oversized lawn darts that would lodge themselves into the terrain upon release. These early iterations, though innovative, were questioned in terms of cost-effectiveness due to their significant expense.

Over the decades, as with many technological sectors, remote reconnaissance systems underwent multiple evolutionary stages, in tandem with the advancements in the embedded electronics. The UGS-S-280 Listener stands as a testament to this progression.

A collaborative endeavor between Allanean Arms and Sunbeat Technologies of ViZion (responsible for the core processing chip), the UGS-S-280 Listener is designed as an air-deployable/hand-emplaceable seismic/audio sensor system. This advanced tool bears a striking resemblance to the AM-50 anti-personnel landmine. However, it replaces explosive components with a lithium-ion battery, a vibration sensor, a central processing unit, and an audio sensor. Upon detecting human or vehicular movements in its proximity, the device transitions from a dormant state to an active observation mode. It then harnesses its audio recording capabilities to relay data to adjacent UGS-S-280 Listener devices and, subsequently, to a centralized command unit.

Technical Overview: Externally, the UGS-S-280 Listener resembles the AM-50 landmine, housed in a completely waterproof plastic casing. Internally, it boasts a chipset analogous to basic mobile phones, albeit simplified. Features include SATNAV location recording, seismic detection, a microphone, an option for external seismic sensor linkage, and an NFC chip for inventory and manual placement. A short-range mesh network antenna facilitates communication with other UGS-S-280 Listeners or distinct network nodes, covering up to 20 miles (32 km). With its lithium-ion battery, the device promises an impressive operational duration of 60 days.

Deployment Methods:

Remote Deployment: When introduced via automated systems such as aerial drops or mine-scattering launchers, the device activates upon impact. A built-in timer sets the device to standby mode 50 seconds post-impact. If subsequent vibrations—indicative of human or vehicle movements—are detected within a 15-meter radius, an alert signal is disseminated through its short-range mesh network. This signal, paired with location data, assists in mapping potential threats. The device's audio sensors are then activated, transmitting nearby sounds to the C3I command hub (the transmissions are, of course, encrypted)..

Manual Emplacement: A notable limitation of the UGS-S-280 Listener is its restricted detection range when deployed via automated systems, sensing only vibrations from its immediate surroundings. Manual deployment offers a solution. Users can connect an external seismic sensor to the device—a pin-like apparatus attached to a wire. This seemingly modest addition drastically amplifies the UGS-S-280 Listener's detection capacity to an astounding 150 meters.

The UGS-S-280 Listener embodies Allanean Armss relentless pursuit of innovation, ensuring that ground operations are backed by cutting-edge surveillance technology.
