Background: The increase in the prevalence of guerrilla warfare and urban combat, as well as other forms of warfare where the general area of fighting remains the same over the course of months and even years, have increased the importance of rail transport for military purposes.
Allanean Arms has taken upon itself to design an armored locomotive that can be used in operational logistics near the front line as part of a Feldbahn arrangements as well as be used in military and civilian logistics operations, within the narrow confines of factories, mines, and military storage compounds.
The Rhinoceros locomotive is designed for use with standard 750 mm narrow-gauge rail networks, and can be use for a variety of military and civilian applications.
Technology: The locomotive is a dual-cabin setup, enabling it to switch direction without rotating the locomotive, and to operate as either a push or pull locomotive with no changes in the internal arrangements. Each driver cabin is equipped with drive-by-wire systems and safety cameras, allowing the driver complete 360-degree awareness. In the event that remote weapons stations are installed, the input from the RWS camera is also piped into the driver’s cabin.
The driver position can be equipped with a set of ANTG-21 Telepat or similar AR or VR goggles, connected to the awareness cameras, and the train can be fully integrated with the Bastion II Battlefield Management System and the Jambhala logistics management system. Clients will be provided with the data necessary to integrate the Rhinoceros into their own RMS (Rail Management System).
The train is optionally-manned and can be controlled entirely through an RMS, however, each cabin is capable of seating 3 persons, and in military operation can seat a driver and mechanic who can respond to malfunctions in the engine or operate the remote weapons systems.
The locomotive is substantially over-engined, equipped with a 1600-horsepower engine, enabling it to carry the weight of its armor as well as maneuver substantial loads.
The locomotive is equipped with short-wave radio and a dual cellular communications connection, capable of securely segregating work communications from the entertainment suite’s data input (see below).
Protection: As evident from the previous sections, the Rhinoceros is armored. The driver compartments and engine compartments are equipped with reinforced steel armor and Kevlar spall lining, enabling them to be protected from 12.7 ammunition and artillery fragments, with the exception of the windows, which are equipped with ballistic safety glass as well as armor blinds that can be flipped close in emergencies. Other areas are equipped with steel plate armor protecting them from small arms fire up to 7.62 x 51 steel-core projectiles.
Within the locomotive, additional protections are in place, including self-sealing fuel tanks, automated fire suppression systems in the engine bay, as well as a positive-pressure CBRN protection system.
Driver comfort: The driver cabins for the Rhinoceros are fully climate controlled, and fitted with a video and music system which is air gapped from the actual operational systems, and thus can be used without any concerns for mission security. In civilian use, or where permitted by military regulations, this suite can be connected to the Internet.
