Background: As Hammond Motors had successful sold trucks and logistics ships to military buyers all over the world, it had gradually branched out into military logistics equipment such as recovery vehicles and the like. It was almost an inevitability for the company to branch out also into the creation of military ships.
After study of the Spirit of Hope Major Force Landing Ship], the company went on with its ambition of using its know-how and experience in building heavy cargo vessels, and to produce an amphibious transport dock operating based on diesel power technology, which could be used by nations that do not have the desire, the funds, or the infrastructure to operate atomic-powered ships in this class.
The Bakunawa-class LPD was the result. Based partly on the Major Force Landing Ship and partly on existing heavy commercial roll-on / roll-off ferries, it is capable of sealifting an entire mechanized brigade, with all of its combat vehicles and at least some of its support trucks and sufficient supplies for 30 days of operation.
While its great size makes some tactical maneuvers difficult to impossible (it is a large and not very agile ship, as it is essentially a faster, well-armed, vehicle ferry), it is fully capable of harbor operations and landing maneuvers.
Conditions on board: In the layout described above, the ship can accommodate 5,000 soldiers in what can be at best described as ‘spartan’ conditions for a term of approximately 15 days without resupply. This will include rooms with multiple stacked bunks, limited space per soldier, and the like. However, as the ship is constructed allowing for a modular partition system, it is possible to rearrange some of the ship’s internal layout, decreasing personnel capacity or reducing vehicle storage in favor of a more ‘humane’ arrangement.
As usual, powerful climate control units are installed throughout the ship, and the entire vessel is equipped with NBC protection measures.
Storage: The ammunition and parts storage areas of the ship are equipped with automated warehouse systems and fully compatible with the Jambhala logistics management system for rapid, responsive, and reliably tracked retrieval of armaments, ammunition, supply and spare parts.
Armaments: The ship is equipped with the ordinary self-defense armaments common to ships of Allanean manufacture, i.e., two RAM launchers, a mini-torpedo launcher, decoy launchers and electronic warfare equipment. However, beyond this, it is equipped also with 16 VLS cells, capable of launching a variety of anti-air, anti-ship, and cruise missiles, providing it a capability for ground attack in support of the forces it lands.[/align]
