Background: Advances in digital technology have led to a proliferation of low-cost precision weapons. Where once cruise missiles and loitering munitions were the exclusive domain of high-tech world powers, today even terrorist groups and resistance movements can set up their own production lines or repurpose civilian drones to carry weapons.

All of those threats have common qualities: they are low-speed, low-flying threats, giving the targets only a limited time to track, lock on to, and engage their target.

This increased need, as well as the desire by the government of Allanea to create a weapons system that could maximize compatibility with existing logistics and supply parts, which could be sourced from industrial sources around Greater Prussia, has created the Ministry of Defense Bird Trap tender, in which a variety of air defense systems from various vendors competed.

The winning system was Allanean Arms’ Theraposa. It was named after the family of Theraposidaea spiders. Just as Theraposidae stands for ‘fearsome bird eater’ and is a name for a family of spiders who sometimes drag down and consume small birds, Theraposa is a small, fearsome system that is designed to rapidly engage and take down small aircraft and missiles.

Composed of the pre-existing Mamba Miniature SAM, and component parts produced by Allanean Arms and its partners at the Serene Power Company and Schwerpunkt, the Theraposa is an all-in-one air defense platform that fits in a standard shipping container (either a Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit or a Forty-Foot Equivalent Unit). The compact missiles, already racked in VLS pods, can be cold-launched immediately to engage any low-flying targets.

This makes the Theraposa optimal for use both on ground vehicles (as part of convoy protection, firebase security, other similar tasks) as well as ships (for military operations or as part of anti-piracy operations under World Assembly Resolution #20 Suppress International Piracy). It can also be deployed separately from any vehicles for firebase security operations, counterterrorism operations, or security at sporting events or other high-attendance public events.

Sensor technology: The Theraposa is equipped with two retractable sensor systems - an AESA radar and an 1280 x 1024 day and night EO system. When elevated on their winch elevator systems, the sensor masts are locked in place and can be used continuously even when the Theraposa is in motion on board a truck or train. This allows immediate reaction against any surprise attacks.

The RADAR on the Theraposa can detect miniature UAVs at a range of 15-25 kilometers and fighter aircraft out to 20 kilometers, providing the necessary warning time for the air defense system. It is capable of tracking up to 100 targets simultaneously and sharing target data with other weapons systems, as well as detecting incoming mortar rounds for target data sharing with C-RAM systems and serving as a counter-battery radar.

Alternatively, the Theraposa can receive target warnings from other systems, which would in theory allow operation also without a sensor.

Power, IT, and communications: Mounted within the Theraposa is a 6 Kw auxiliary power unit with sufficient fuel for 14 hours of independent operations.

Mounted internally are three identical, software-defined work stations. Each of them is equipped with 2 x 30 inch screens, capable of providing various information from the radar and EO sensor suite, a command and control system such as the Bastion II or equivalent, as well as system status and fire control data.

The system is fully air conditioned and capable of operation at temperatures of +50 to -40 degrees Celsius. A positive pressure NBC protection system is mounted within the system, as well as a separate, ceiling mounted, foldout OLED entertainment system standing independently from the military systems.

A Theraposa can communicate by radio, SATCOM, or by landline to other systems, and can either share or receive targeting data.

Accessories/auxiliary systems: If desired, the client may purchase Theraposa-X and Theraposa-XL auxiliary pods. Those are air defense VLS launch pods mounted in TEU and FEU shipping containers that do not have their own standalone controls. These pods are to be controlled by an external Theraposa system or any other system that is appropriate.

All prices include a full load of Mamba missiles. Additional missiles are to be ordered separately from our partners at Schwerpunkt.
