The Nechoshtan (Bronze Serpant) class was designed as a hospital ship for the Royal Navy to support both humanitarian and combat missions by the Nachmerean armed forces. The class was designed by Menashe Bachar, a renowned designer of cruise ships. Bachar relied on his experience designing several classes of small and medium cruise liners in designing the Nechoshtan, resulting in a fast and stable ship, capable of quickly reaching battle or disaster areas and providing medical services with a high degree of comfort both for the crew and patients.

General Design

The Nechoshtan is a 186m and 24,000 ton ship, designed to the lines of fast cruise ships adjusted for the hospital ship role. She has a slender front and semi tunneled aft, and two propellers close to the center, with nearly touching disc areas. The design reduces water resistance and optimizes flow of water to the propellers. The rear of the ship is dominated by a large helipad capable of receiving even the largest helicopters, with an under deck hanger and service area for two medium sized helicopters operated from the ship itself.

The ship was internally designed to make medical operations as easy as possible. The emergency room is located in the rear of the superstructure for quick transfer of patients from landing helicopters. Operating rooms and the ICU are located on deck 3, near the center of the ship for maximal comfort and safety during operations, and a dynamic fin stabilization system is installed to minimize roll and pitch. The ship is equipped with state of the art medical imagery services (CT, X-ray, Ultrasound), fully equipped medical lab, dental clinic, optometry lab, dialysis clinic, children's clinic, and a morgue. It also has a large pharmacy and oxygen producing facility for sustained operations.

The ICU can hold 45 critical patients while another 400 patients can be hospitalized in other parts of the ship. All hospital medical and logistics are assisted by First Care, a Nachmerean designed hospital management system.
The ship has 4 sets of large elevators and wide straight corridors allowing moving patients. There are several ramps linking decks to the lifeboat muster areas to allow quick mass evacuation of the wounded.

Because the health services depend on the comfort and mental health of the staff and patients, the ship has extensive recreational facilities. In the rear of the ship on the upper superstructure is a bar-cafeteria area, gym, movie theater/ conference center and religious worship area. The open deck on top of the superstructure has a sports court.


Propulsion

Nechoshtan was built to quickly reach conflict or disaster areas and is powered by a combined diesel and diesel system utilizing four large generators powering 2 electric induction motors powering two shafts. The ship can cruise at 20 knots using only 2 generators, or reach a top speed of 27 knots using all power available. 4 large auxiliary engines are used to supply the ship ample electric power in port or when on station.

Sensors

Though not a combatant, Nechoshtan is equipped with two radar systems. For very close range detection and navigation, a C-band SRS-2270 radar is installed, with a range of 50km. For helicopter operations and air threat detection an RS-2210 radar is used. It is a simple and lightweight X-band maritime radar capable of detecting air and surface targets out to 100km. The two radars complement each other in different bands, and each is theoretically capable of handling all radar functions of the ship, providing redundancy.


Armament

Because of its hospital ship status Nechoshtan is not armed with offensive weapons in its basic variant. The ship has an armory for small arms, and the are several mounts for machine guns or grenade launchers around the ship.

The Royal Navy and Schwerpunkt both realized that in some instances the status of hospital ship may not be respected by enemy forces, and a contingency plan to quickly arm the Nechoshtan if needed was named Nechoshtan M.

Nechoshtan is fitted for the Marquesan “Minerva'' combined air defense system. If needed this system can be installed in a matter of days, providing the ship with both highly increased sensor capability and firepower from 38mm guns and Bayonet missiles to defend the ship against small surface threats and all manner of aerial threats.

In addition to the armament, Nechoshtan M includes the installation of the standard Schwerpunkt countermeasures:

The SES SEWS electronic warfare suite includes radar and laser warning receivers to identify and jam or counter incoming emissions and munitions. The system is capable of identification and jamming or deception of multiple threats. SEWS uses advanced DRFM techniques and cutting edge power management to jam or spoof hostile ship, aircraft and missile radars. It employs several laser dazzlers to defeat incoming laser guided munitions. |

SEWS is operated by a single crew member and is modular enabling expansion according to user requirements. It is seamlessly integrated with BASTION II and the ship’s sensors. If SEWS fails to defend the ship using radar or laser jamming/spoofing, the ship will be defended by the “Kaspit” (Mercury) integrated decoy system. “Kaspit” is a launcher system capable of deploying various types of decoys quickly and according to the type of threat attacking the ship.

The system comprises 4 360 degree rotating 40 barrel launchers for various decoys, connected to a computerized threat assessment and reaction system. The system is connected both to Mifras and BASTION II, and using the ships sensors allows the operator to deploy the optimal decoy at the optimal location.
Each launcher has 36 115mm tubes and 4 90mm tubes, allowing it to fire the following types of decoys:

To defend the vessel against torpedoes, a "Tamnun" (Octupus) anti-torpedo torpedo launcher is mounted on either side. "Tamnun" launches a 200mm, 52kg countermeasure at incoming torpedoes, using data from the ship's towed sonar array. The countermeasure uses active homing to locate and attack the torpedo, detonating by proximity fuse and either damages its homing systems or utterly destroys it.
