Since it's founding by various enthusiasts across Qhevak’s diverse communication nets, AEK Open Optics has been dedicated to the design of high quality open-source laser weapon systems to put as much firepower as possible in the hands of freedom fighters (and others) everywhere. The AEK-504 is the ultimate expression of that goal, a handheld, high powered pulse laser with the firepower to bore through most power armor on the market.
In semi- and full-automatic mode, the AEK-504 is designed to fire a series of short 20 kJ laser pulses, with each pulse composed of 40 500-kJ nanosecond micropulses into the space of a millisecond. In an Earthlike atmosphere, these power intensities are high enough to forge the beam into self-focusing “filaments” with a thickness of under a millimeter, enabling extreme penetration on the order of 110 millimeters of rolled homogeneous armor within half a kilometer – sufficient against most power armor, light synthmorphs, and many superheroes, mid-tech AFVs, daemons and dragons. Against unarmored humans the beam is even more devastating, capable of literally blasting a baseline human in half with a single shot.
The weapon can also operate in continuous wave mode, tuneable from 10-120 kW, for cutting, sensor and vision blinding, and engaging unarmored swarm opponents. As a free-electron laser the AEK-504 can switch between a wide range of frequencies – 400 nanometer violet is standard for long range atmospheric combat, 100 nm UV-B for vacuum combat, 480 nanometer blue-green for underwater and 1500 nm IR in short-ranged environments where eye safety is a priority. It is air-cooled in atmospheric environments, but can attach radiator panels for heat radiation in vacuum.
The AEK-504 has a durable, self-healing adamant construction and carries internal nano-repair reserves that can repair most damages in a matter of hours. The upper and lower rail systems can morph to adapt to most commercially available attachments, and link with smartscopes to feed data from the primary lens, eliminating any parallax when aiming. An inductive coupler in the grip can also be optionally configured to link to most powered armor and neural lace systems, allowing the rifle to switch modes and fire with mental input from the user.
