Background: For persons engaged in heavy physical activity in cold weather - mountain climbers, polar explorers, soldiers, divers and cave explorers, as well as infrastructure maintenance crews - the issue of finding proper clothing to wear had always been more complicated than for most. Clothing that was too thin meant that one could risk hypothermia, perhaps even frostbite, leading to death or loss of fingers and limbs. Clothing that was too thick restricted one’s movements, and could become soaked in sweat under heavy activity. This meant not only that one would become uncomfortable - sweat could then either cause chafing and injury, or, worse, become cold and cause... once again, hypothermia and frostbite. In extremes, one could freeze to death because one’s clothing was too thick!

(Indeed, medical science records incidents of hypothermia and pneumonia arising in cavalrymen taking long rides during summer nights, with their clothing becoming soaked in sweat and then killing them as their body temperature dropped. )

Over the years, the general view of the ideal underwear for extreme cold weather activity was formulated - it was a set of a shirt and path, made out of wool and cotton, worn over one’s regular light underwear but under the outer clothing, such as a uniform and overcoat. Different designs were made for different types of activities (for example, divers’ underclothes were often made of heavier wool), but this general principle remains.

The Himation set of Arctic Tactical Underwear has been designed by Allanean Arms to meet the Free Kingdom Armed Forces requirement for a next-generation set of underwear for cold-weather use. It incorporates the newest in textile technologies, ergonomic design, and wearable electronics.

Design: The Himation ATU system is composed out of a pair of pants and a shirt, made out of a flexible, mildly elastic material. It is manufactured using an automated seamless-weave system to minimize discomfort during wear, and elastic bands in the cuffs and other openings are used to ensure fitting the edges of the suit to one’s body. (The groin area features an ergonomic layout to minimize injury and chafing. As such, while it is possible for a person of either sex to wear any Himation suit, it is recommended for all persons to wear those pants that are anatomically matching their sex). A shielded plastic-coated insulated zipper allow the wearer to open and close the collar if the weather grows hotter as well as aiding them in taking the Himation off and putting it on again.

Located on the outer side of the right and left wrist and on the back are three pockets, intended for the insertion of electronic devices (as described below).

Fabric: At the core of the Himation is its fabric. The suit is made out of two layers, intended to improve thermal insulation for the wearer, similar to earlier generations of thermal underclothing. The fabric itself is composed of 85% cotton, 7% nylon, 5% bamboo charcoal fiber, and silver-plated nylon, intended to improve the ability of fabric to wick away moisture from the body. The use of nylon threads coated in a microscopic quantities of silver, to reduce unpleasant smells and prevent bacterial infections. (For tactical use by commando teams and during SERE, this has the added benefit of improving troops’ ability to evade pursuit by enemy K teams)It is this fabric that makes Hipation one of the most advanced systems of cold-weather underclothing on the market today.

Himation-A Electronics System: Earlier in the description, we have mentioned the existence of three pockets on the Himation underwear. These pockets - two near the wrists, one on the back between the shoulderblades - allow the use of the Himation-A Electronics System. This consists of two important components: a small sensor, to be worn at wrist level on either the right or left wrist, monitoring heart rate and body temperature, and a large (approx. 500 grams) sealed, lithium-ion body heater, to be worn on one’s back (capable of providing heat for up to 6 hours of continuous cold-weather operations, the heater is entirely sealed and charges from a wireless charging pad). Both systems are IP68 protected, and can be used in a diving or climbing context.
