In the modern geopolitical reality more and more “small wars” are fought. Advanced militaries fight insurgents and naturally wish to apply air assets as a force multiplier to give them the edge over the enemy. Lighter, smaller aircraft are highly capable of performing this role, as are unmanned combat air vehicles. The UCAVs, being of low cost and small signature, are also gaining popularity for use in peer level conflicts.

Schwerpunkt has developed the Bazon (Falconet) specifically for use by these systems. Falconet is an ultra compact and lightweight glide bomb that can not only be carried by small airframes, but is very economical and thanks to its accuracy and relatively small warhead - ideal for engaging enemy forces using civilian areas for cover and concealment. Its diminutive size and lack of propulsion also make the Bazon very hard to detect at launch or during flight, leaving the enemy less time to react by taking cover or attempting to intercept it.

Bazon is an extremely simple design - a stout cylinder fuselage with folding and pivoting X shaped winglets providing both the needed glide range and control surfaces for maneuvering. A smaller X shaped tail provides stability. Because Bazon is unpowered, it is very light, and 50% of the mass is devoted to payload. The payload consists of either a tungsten cased blast fragmentation payload creating a 30m kill radius and penetrating light barriers and armor, or a tandem HEAT charge capable of penetrating up to 1000mm of RHA (after defeating reactive armor).

Bazon is carried on specially designed racks that can be installed over standard pylons. Three options are available - for carrying one, two or three Bazons. The munition is electrically released. It can be guided either using a combined and jam resistant INS/GPS system or an electro-optic and laser seeker. The electro-optic sensor is an uncooled IIR/CCD seeker capable of pixel lock fire and forget. The laser seeker enables guidance either by the launching aircraft or by other assets/supported ground units. Depending on the release altitude and speed Bazon can strike targets as far as 20km from the launch point, in a 360 degree envelope.
