The Lochemet (Warrior) class frigate was designed to fulfill a Royal Navy need for a smaller, more affordable surface combatant to complement the Tehilla class destroyers. The vessel is meant to be a multipurpose, heavily armed escort for capital ships, or used for sea patrol.

General Design

Lochemet is a large frigate, displacing 6,500 tons and 132 meters long, manned by 150 men including the aircrew for a single helicopter. It is the first Nachmerean combatant to carry all its missiles in vertical launch systems, and combined with the design and material choices has a reduced radar cross section. The class is unusually heavily armed for its size, and carries powerful sensors, making it a formidable multi-role surface combatant capable of air-defense, anti-submarine, anti-ship and land attack platform.

Propulsion

The ship employs a CODLAG (Combined Diesel-Electric and Gas) system for power and propulsion. The system comprises a single Mountain Motors Company gas turbine, 4 diesel generators and two electric motors driving two variable pitch propellers. For cruise speed only the reliable and economic diesels are used. These provide a speed of 17 knots and extended range, as well as relatively quiet running. When needed, the gas turbine can be combined, powering the propellers directly, and providing the high speed needed in combat.

Sensors

The frigate’s main sensor is the SES RS-2248F "Magen"(“Shield”). Installed high on the mast, Magen is a cutting edge and powerful AESA multi-function radar. Consisting of four large panels the radar covers 360 degrees around the ship out to 450km range. The RS-2248 utilizes doppler and multi-beam techniques combined with advanced ECCM to overcome jamming and spoofing attempts and detect surface and air targets at long ranges and cluttered environments. The radar can not only detect targets, but also guide missiles and perform splash detection and correction for the ship’s gun.

Though Magen is in theory capable of performing all tactical radar functions for the Lochemet class, another radar, the RS-2210, is installed to complement the main radar. RS-2210 is a simple and lightweight X-band maritime radar capable of detecting air and surface targets out to 100km. On Lochemet it is employed mostly for helicopter operations, but also “free” the main radar by directing gunfire, doing close range detection and navigation, and supporting detection efforts by adding another band.

In addition to the radars the ship is equipped with a state of the art electro optic system for both detecting and engaging targets. Mounted on the mast, in a 360 degree rotating stabilized gimbal. It includes a highly capable 1280X1024px thermal imager able to detect aircraft and ships at beyond visual range distances, as well as full high definition digital camera, and eyesafe laser rangefinder/designator. Thanks to the combination of an excellent thermal imager and camera this unit is operable in extremely adverse weather, through smoke etc. The electro-optics unit is capable of automated tracking of targets at high air speeds even at close range. The system can be used to cue both the ships missiles and the ships 76mm gun.

To detect and engage submarines the Lochemet class is equipped with both a hull mounted and towed sonar. The towed system, TCAPS-2 is an advanced, passive and active variable depth sonar capable of operation down to 230 meters and at sea state 6. It is capable of detecting submerged threats out to 60 kilometers from the ship. For constant submarine, mine and torpedo detection the EHMS-F hull mounted sonar is installed. Acting simultaneously in active and passive modes the EHMS-F is capable of detecting submarines out to 35km, as well as providing torpedo warning and tracking for the ships anti-torpedo system.

Armament

Lochemet was designed as the main fighting vessel of the Royal Navy, to protect the carriers and amphibious warfare ships, and destroy surface, air and submerged threats. The Royal Navy, fielding a new generation of missiles capable of vertical launch, opted for an all VLS armament. This provides great flexibility in arming the ship for specific likely threat environments. A “Mifras” integrated bridge system receives and integrates data from the various sensors as well as the BASTION II network and integrates it to provide the bridge officers full situational awareness. “Mifras” also gives the bridge complete and fast control of the ship’s armament. This integration of communications, weapons and sensors allows Yahalom to quickly and decisively engage targets.

The Lochemet’s main armament is a 64 cell VLS mounted in the front of the ship. This is a strike length system allowing for a mix of LRC-2100, ASROC, Morena 5 AShM, Hammerhead, Whipsnake or Viper-5 missiles. This battery therefore allowed a dedicated formidable land attack, anti-shipping, anti-submarine or anti-aircraft loadout, or a balanced multi-role one.

Another, tactical length, VLS in the mid section is intended for air defense only, allowing 32 Whipsnake or Viper-5 missiles for both self and force defense. This battery means that Lochemet maintains a capable air defense even if the entire main VLS is loaded with non AD munitions. A mix of the two types provides a capability to engage manned and unmanned aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic threats at a range of 1-250km and from sea skimming altitude to 55,000ft.

Lochemet frigates are armed with two types of gun systems. A 76mm quick firing naval gun and a 20mm CIWS. The 76mm can fire up to 120 rounds per minute, to a range of 40km. The gun elevates from -15 to + 85 degrees and traverses through 360 degrees in 6 seconds. The gun can be directed using data from the main radar or the EO system, and is corrected for internal and external factors - roll of the ship, external temperature, ammo temperature, wind, coriolis effect, etc. The Mk.8 20mm CIWS provides the frigate a last ditch defense against incoming threats. Guided by its own radar, the 6 barreled gun has a 4,500 rounds per minute rate of fire and can defeat incoming missiles at ranges of 0-1400m. It is automatically cued by the “Mifras” system.

Complementing the anti-submarine missiles that can be launched from the front VLS, the frigate also has two 4 tube launchers for 324mm torpedoes, one starboard and one portside in the rear superstructure.

Electronic Warfare and Countermeasures

Lochemet is equipped to identify and defeat electronic and kinetic threats. The SES SEWS electronic warfare suite includes radar and laser warning receivers to identify and jam or counter incoming emissions and munitions. The system is capable of identification and jamming or deception of multiple threats. SEWS uses advanced DRFM techniques and cutting edge power management to jam or spoof hostile ship, aircraft and missile radars. It employs several laser dazzlers to defeat incoming laser guided munitions.

SEWS is operated by a single crew member and is modular enabling expansion according to user requirements. It is seamlessly integrated with BASTION II and the ship’s sensors. If SEWS fails to defend the ship using radar or laser jamming/spoofing, the ship will be defended by the “Kaspit” (Mercury) integrated decoy system. “Kaspit” is a launcher system capable of deploying various types of decoys quickly and according to the type of threat attacking the ship.

The system comprises 4 360 degree rotating 40 barrel launchers for various decoys, connected to a computerized threat assessment and reaction system. The system is connected both to Mifras and BASTION II, and using the ships sensors allows the operator to deploy the optimal decoy at the optimal location.

To defend the vessel against torpedoes, a "Tamnun" (Octupus) anti-torpedo torpedo launcher is mounted on either side. "Tamnun" launches a 200mm, 52kg countermeasure at incoming torpedoes, using data from the ship's towed sonar array. The countermeasure uses active homing to locate and attack the torpedo, detonating by proximity fuse and either damages its homing systems or utterly destroys it.

Aviation and boat facilities

Lochemet’s aft deck is a landing pad sufficient for a medium maritime helicopter for anti-submarine, scouting and general duties. The ship also has a hangar for storing, fueling and maintaining said helicopter. If needed one helicopter can be operated from the helipad and one hangered, though this is not suitable for long term operations.

Lochemet carries two 9m rigid hull inflatable boats, launched from hangars located portside and starboard under the bridge/mast area, along with a crane for lowering and raising the boat.
