General:In today’s world, underwater rescue, oceanic construction and repair missions, scientific exploration and tactical operations all require continuous underwater observation. However, to keep teams of divers on staff is extremely costly, and even with the most experienced divers runs the continous risk of diver injuries. Employers and military planners alike must address not only the training and wages of these divers - which are in no way cheap - but also the procurement of costly safety and professional equipment for them, from rebreather units to hyperbaric chambers. Inevitably at least some divers will become injured or even be lost, leading to both tragedy - none of us want fine men and women under our responsibility to be killed or maimed - and, in addition, further financial cost for ther medical care.

For this reason, civilian researchers, oil companies, and military organizations alike have sought ways to supplement men under water with machinery. The current top of the line in such equipment is the use of autonomous underwater vehicles - AUVs.

Here at Allanean Arms we propose a simple, portable, vehicle. The Ariadne MAUV - Modular Autonomous Underwater Vehicle is capable of being used alongside standard diving equipment. It is assembled on-site out of standard cylindrical modules, and can be assembled, maintained, and controlled with only minimal training. (We propose a brief standard operator’s course). It can be used for typical sea floor mapping operations, mine detection, reconnaissance, and infrastructure / pipeline inspections.

The principal element of the design is of course a cigar-shaped system, equipped with basic navigational and detection sensors and powered by lithium-ion batteries. This system can be carried onboard and manipulated by a single crewmember. Once deployed (in this case, it is fancy militarese for dump it overboard) it can be remotely controlled, or - if operating in a setting such as a cave - controlled by cable or even proceeding autonomously based on a pre-programmed routine.

Software: The Ariadne logs all of its mapping information and video / photographic data using the Nima open-source software suite, developed for us at the New Askalon College of Technology. All of this information can be broadcast back to the mother ship, but it is also saved on the Ariadne’s own memory and can be reclaimed upon the LAUV’s return using a standard USB port or wi-fi.

Modularity: The Ariadne and Ariadne-E ships with a carry case and a set of spare battery modules. Side-scan sonar units and Multi-Beam Echo Sounder units are available at extra price.
