Weight: 550 grams
Explosive weight: 100 gram Composition B main charge.
Unit cost: $200
DPR: $10 million

Background: The PDM-100 is a near-spherical device, approximately 7.5 cm in diameter, with the bottom of the sphere slightly flattened. Unlike many pursuit-deterrent munition, the PDM-100 can be used as either a hand-grenade or a mine (the mode can be pre-set by the operative by flipping a switch on the top of the device into ‘grenade’ mode or into ‘mine’ mode - this can only be done BEFORE removing the pull ring!).

The ‘mine’ mode is in fact the primary use of the device. It is intended, as the name implies, to be used to deter pursuits of retreating special forces or reconnaissance teams. In this mode, the device activates a 15-second timer when thrown.

Inside the device is a sphere of a slightly lower diameter than the device itself, such that it rotates freely within the device, and a small amount of liquid explosive, which will gather at the bottom of the device under the effect of gravity. It is also equipped with a magnetic sensor. When a person carrying 1 kilogram or more of metal on their body appears within about 5 meters of the device, the liquid explosive detonates. This is a propellant charge, breaking the exterior casing and throwing the interior sphere about 2 meters into the air, at which point it detonates - showering everyone nearby in shrapnel. (The lethal radius of the munition is about ten meters, but casualties can be produced out to 200 meters).

In hand-grenade mode, the PDM 100 operates much like any hand-grenade - it detonates within precisely 3.5 seconds of being thrown, peppering everyone around it with shrapnel. However, this is not the main, nor even the primary, use for this piece of equipment.

Safety: The PDM is equipped with the usual safety equipment on hand-grenades - a safety pin preventing the accidental removal of the pull ring (the safety pin is to be removed before combat), a pull ring and an arming lever, used like on a regular hand-grenade.

The PDM-100 is designed to be triggered by the approach of a person carrying a substantial amount of metal on their body. This is designed to ensure it is detonated in the presence of armed enemy troops, and is not triggered by wild animals or random civilians. However, this is not entirely foolproof and the usual care must be taken when handling the weapon. (The sensor is electronic, and to some extent is capable of adjusting to the metal levels already present in the environment, but cannot be manually calibrated or adjusted in the field in any way). In addition, the PDM-100 will self-destruct within nine to ten hours of its deployment, when the sensor’s battery runs down.
