Transport Helicopters

CH-47 Chinook
Image

Crew: Two on flight deck.
Role: Transport, cargo (44 equipped troops), recovery.
Armament: Usually none.
Dimensions: Length: 51 ft (15.56 m). Rotor diameter: 60 ft (18.3 m)
Wings: Two three-blade main rotors, one above the nose and one above the tail section.
Engine(s): Two turboshafts in pods, one on each side of thick tail fin.
Fuselage: Thick, box-like body with bulges along the sides of the midsection. Tapered front and rear. Glassed-in, stepped cockpit above a short, rounded nose. Fixed landing gear.
Tail: High, thick tail fin.

The CH-47 Chinook aircraft is a twin-turbine-engine, tandem-rotor, medium-transport helicopter. The CH-47 is used for troop movement, cargo and weapons transportation, and as an air ambulance under day, night, visual, and instrument conditions.

The CH-47 has a power-up operated ramp that permits straight-in rear loading. Two auxiliary loading ramps are hinged to the aft end ramp. When the ramp is lowered, these auxiliary ramps provide flush contact between the ramp and the ground. They may be positioned to accommodate various vehicle tread widths or butted together for easier loading of bulk cargo. The fuselage design gives the helicopter a water-landing capability. A gas turbine, auxiliary power unit provides hydraulic and electric power for ground operations.

Twenty-eight combat equipped parachutists can jump from this aircraft. Aircraft safety requires that the speed during jumps is not less than 80 knots or more than 110 knots, with 90 knots being optimum speed. No special preparation is required if the aircraft has skis. Minimum jump altitude is 1,500 feet above ground level when jumping below 90 knots. Minimum jump altitude 90 knots and above is 1,250 feet above ground level.

Price: 500,000 USD

UH-60 Blackhawk

Crew: Two.
Role: Assault-transport (11 equipped troops), multipurpose.
Armament: Hellfire missiles, machine guns, rockets, mine dispensers.
Dimensions: Length: 51 ft (15.25 m). Rotor diameter: 53 ft, 8 in (16.9 m).
Wings: Four-blade main rotor with swept-back tips mounted on top center of fuselage.
Engine(s): Two turboshaft engines within a hump on top of fuselage. Semicircular air intakes. Oval exhausts.
Fuselage: Slender, rectangular fuselage tapers to the rear. Rounded nose with stepped cockpit. Fixed landing gear.
Tail: Boom tapers to a high, swept-back fin with tail rotor on right. Large, unequally tapered flat mounted low on the fin.

The UH-60 Blackhawk is a twin-turbine-engine, single-rotor utility helicopter with a tricycle-type landing gear. It has a four-blade main rotor system. The UH-60 is used mainly for tactical transport of troops, supplies, and equipment. It is also used for training, mobilization, medical evacuation, mine setting, and development of new and improved concepts.

Eight combat-equipped parachutists can jump from this aircraft. On missions requiring a window gunner, the maximum number of parachutists is reduced to six. Static line parachute operations require a static jumpmaster. The indicated airdrop speed of the aircraft should not be less than 65 knots or more than 75 knots, with 70 knots being optimum speed. The minimum jump altitude is 1,500 feet above ground level.

Price: 620,000 USD

CH-46 Sea Knight
Image

Crew: Three.
Role: Transport, cargo (25 equipped troops), assault.
Armament: Usually none.
Dimensions: Length: 45 ft (13.68 m). Rotor diameter: 51 ft (15.56 m).
Wings: Two three-blade main rotors, one above the nose section and cabin on a hump; the other on top of high, thick tail fin.
Engine(s): Two turboshafts located inside the lower part of the tail fin.
Fuselage: Short and thick with flat bottom and upswept tail section. Glassed-in cockpit. Landing gear pods on bottom rear of body.
Tail: High, thick tail fin with oval exhaust ports on the sides.

The CH-46 is a tandem-rotor, medium-transport helicopter.

Twelve combat-equipped parachutists can jump from either the personnel door or the ramp. Parachutists walk off the ramp (which is lowered to 11 degrees below centerline gage) in a crouched position to avoid hitting their heads on the upper ramp door. Parachutists must not spring upward when jumping this helicopter. They do not make a vigorous exit. The speed of the aircraft is 80 to 90 knots when jumping. The minimum drop altitude is 1,250 feet above ground level when jumping at 90 knots and 1,500 feet above ground level when jumping at 80 knots.

Price: 340,000 USD

CH-53 Sea Stallion
Image

Crew: Two on flight deck.
Role: Heavy-assault transport (55 equipped troops, vehicles, guns), rescue.
Armament: Usually none.
Dimensions: Length: 67 ft (20.46 m). Rotor diameter: 72 ft, 3 in (22.04 m).
Wings: Large, six-blade main rotor mounted on a long hump above the body midsection.
Engine(s): Two turboshafts mounted high and outside the body midsection.
Fuselage: Large, boat-shaped with rounded nose. Body tapers to rear. Glassed-in cockpit. Upswept rear section. Landing gear pods at lower midsection.
Tail: One tapered flat on right side of swept-back fin. Rotor on left side of fin.

The CH-53 is a twin-engine, single-rotor, medium-transport helicopter.

Twenty combat-equipped parachutists, using the ramp, can jump from this aircraft. Parachutists walk off the ramp, which is lowered a minimum of 11 degrees below centerline gauge. Jumpers do not make a vigorous exit. The speed of the aircraft during jumps is 90 to 110 knots. The minimum drop altitude for aircraft with a 90- to 110-knot drop speed is 1,250 feet above ground level.
