Background: Spear-hunting is perhaps the most ancient form of hunting. Before guns, before bows, humanity’s ancient ancestors hunted even the most dangerous animals with nothing but a loincloth, a spear, and some rocks to their name. Spear-hunters hunted antelope in the savanna, battled wolves, cave bears, and mammoths. Spear-hunting remained the recourse of Russian peasants against the wolf and bear and of the Maasai hunters against the lion long after firearms were introduced, and even as late in the 21st century men went hunting after some of the world’s most dangerous mammals with a smartphone in their pocket and a spear in their hand.

Here at Took Outfitters we want to combine the finest in historic tradition with the most recent advances in technology. After extensive testing with 19th, 20th, and 21st century example of bear-hunting spears, some of them museum pieces, others replicated by our R&D department, and eventually came up with what we consider to be the ultimate spear design.

As you can see in the original promotional art, the spear is 230 centimeters long, somewhat taller than a man, equipped with a massive blade that can be used to deliver both stabs and vicious slashing blows. The main blade is produced out of aerospace-grade BG-42 steel, while the secondary blades are titanium.

The astute reader might notice that we have mentioned secondary blades. It’s true of course that there are no such blades visible in the original image - but it is the secondary blades that make the Bearslayer among the most advanced bear spears in use.

The explanation is simple. The Bearslayer is in all actuality a steel tube sheathed in wood, holding a powerful spring mechanism. When the hunter stabs the bear (or wolf, or lion, or...), the spring causes a pair of titanium blades to open within the wound, simultaneously increasing the wound cavity and ensuring the animal cannot get loose of the spear. (Obviously, hunters that do not wish to leave their spear within the wound do not have to cock the mechanism before the hunt - at that point you can use it like another spear - as a thrown or hacking weapon.

Price and kit: Naturally the readers have now begun asking themselves ‘why is this so expensive’. The truth is that a spear for eight hundred New Dornalian Dollars is fully comparable witht the prices of high-grade hunting spears. Our spear ships with a four-foot carry bag that allows you to carry or store the spear in its dismantled stage (please for the love of the gods assemble the spear before you’re in the direct presence of the animal!), a skinning knife, and a cleaning kit for your spear, as well as a user-maintenance manual. If you’re going to be hunting by throwing the spear, it’s possible to order a variant that’s fitted with a small internal whistle, which causes it to make a frightening whistling sound as it flies towards your target. (Or not, if you’re the stealth hunter type).

Order the Bearslayer today. Join the modern age of spear hunting.
