Background: For many years, the armies of Allanea and many allies countries have made use of wooden-handle shovels for their combat engineers. These were excellent versatile tools, but in the event of the inevitable breakage of shovel handles upon extensive hard work, the only option for repair often was to replace the handle, and of course forward-area workshops don't always have a large supply of wood. To improve the productivity of combat engineers, artillerymen, vehicle crews and other soldiers issued shovels, it became necessary to design a new shovel.

The first and obvious solution was to design a metal shovel, comprised of a hollow metal handle welded directly to be blade. This improved logistics, both increasing the shovel's lifespan to breakage, and making it possible for the shovel to be rapidly repaired using common welding equipment. A D-handle was also installed, improving digging productivity and reducing fatigue. This handle was wrapped with a polymer coating to protect from corrosion reduce vibration transfer and heat transfer to the hands, enabling the shovel to be used not only to dig, but to hack away vegetation and roots, as well as in hand-to-hand combat, in which the sharp blade can be used as an impromptu polearm or even as a projectile weapon to a range of 3-7 meters). The coating also provides insulation, in the event you accidentally cut into a LV cable.

(To use the FES-125 as a javelin, assume a fighting stance. With the right hand, take the shovel near its blade and raise it to the right shoulder, blade forward. Move the shovel hand to the right, and then, pushing forward sharply with the right leg and turning forcefully with your torso, straighten your arm and throw the shovel. A successful strike with a sharpened shovel will likely cause your attacker to reconsider their plan for the day!)

User-level research has shown that soldiers will often use the shovel as a means of measurement, using either its standardized length or the blade to measure items. To help with this, we made markings on the body of the shovel every 25 centimeters (in the event of damage to the polymer wrapping, identical markings are located on the steel body underneath).

Finally, the blade itself is with a black anticorrosion finish, intended to protect the shovel from corrosion and make it clearer whether or not the shovel has been kept sharpened and properly maintained ā€“ a boon for the inspecting sergeant or civilian owner! (While the main version features a rectangular blade, a pentagonal blade version, FES-125P, is also available for use in harder soils).

Indeed, the Future Engineer Shovel is available for sale to both military organizations and civilian gardeners and will do as well for you when tending to your begonias as it would do for the men in the field when tending to their trenches. It is a truly versatile product, and can be used to measure ditches, to dig, to slice through a root or a rattlesnake ā€“ or, if need be, through the neck of a terrorist or home invader.
