J07M KYOFU (強風 "strong wind") is an advanced variant of the original Nifonese J107M fighter jet. Introduced in 1961, J107M remained one of most iconic Nifonese fighter jets and a symbol of the cold war era, being the first Nifonese supersonic combat aircraft. Produced between 1961 to 1973, the "Mighty Wind" remained the workhorse of the Imperial Nifonese Army Air Arm up until 1980s, when the emphasis was put on newer fighter jets. Until that time, however, thousands of Kyofus have been produced and exported to multiple countries outside Nifon, where they have remained in service even after Imperial Nifonese Army Air Arm retired them. Coming against expectations of mostly developing world states maintaining their fleets, Murakami Defense Industries developed version designated "Kyofu-Ne". Using the original A3M's hull, A3Me was turned into a 4th generation fighter fully capable of posing a threat to older machines operated by the developing world air forces.
- "Mighty Wind" had been designed to be the first supersonic fighter developed by the Empire of Greater Nifon, aiming at combining the traits of fighter and interceptor into a single frame. Other requirements specified ability to start from long, paved roads which were to be used as spare airfields; as well as capability of being refuelled and rearmed in less than 10 minutes by conscripts with minimal training. Those traits made the aircraft greatly appreciated during it's exploitation by the developing countries, which often lacked good airport infrastructure and qualified personnel.
- One of J107M defining characteristics is it's tail-less double detla body, making it hard to differate between the fuselage and the wing. The fuselage has a oval section, housing both the cockpit and the engine's inlet. Engine's inlelt had been incorporated into the fuselage and is placed directly below the fighter's nose.
- Front of the wings includes leading edge extensions, while the rear features flaperons responsible for vertical steering.
- The cockpit, located behind the engine's inlet, had been buried into the fuselage and re-designed for greater visibility and comfort. Istaed of cold war era displays, it now has three high quality LCD monitors. New set of controls compromses a joystick and a pair of throttles. The cockpit houses as well a new, improved ejection seat.
- Responsible for propulsion is Kojima K85 a single turbojet engine generating 56.5 kN (12,700 lbf) thrust dry, 78.4 kN (17,600 lbf) with afterburner.
- A3Me's main sensor is Washi K12 radar. Developed as a private venture by one of largest Nifonese electronics corporations, K12 had been aimed at fleets of lightweight, low cost or legacy aircraft as a low cost, easy to operate radar capable of tracking targets on all aspects. It's capable of tracking 10 targets while engaging 2 simultaneously at distance of 50 kilometers head on and 30 in pursuit, which gives the aircraft a limited BVR capability. The radar can operate in four main air to air modes; vertical scan, automatic HUD scan, optical scan and close combat mode. In addition to that, there are three air to ground modes (low, medium and high resolution) which permit tracking of simultaneously moving ground targets, including guiding Evening Tide 7 anti ship mssile.
- Additional detection capability is provided by an optronic / infra - red search and track system developed by Aravean company Wehrner Electronics - S71. S71 directly integrates a high quality FLIR camera and optical camera, allowing for detection of airborne targets though infra-red at range of up to 100 km depending on the signature, surface targets up to 7 kilometers, and combined TV/IR sensor with laser rangefinder capable of operating up to 40km range.
- To properly guide the missiles, Murakamis aircraft uses To - Ga helmet mounted display, providing 20* FoV for the pilot's right eye and fully capable of displaying every data from the aircraft's own sensors, alongside electromagnetic position sensing technology employed.
- An additonal mission computer equal to that of 4GEN aircraft is installed.
- Additional capabilities are supported by Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS), allowing for quicker data exchange. All sensor systems aboard "Kyofu" are directly integrated with aircraft's VHF - UHF link to support sharing of information between aircraft. This is of severe importance as the datalink permits to offset low range of the main radar through information sharing with newer, more advanced aircraft also linked to this datalink.
- Responsible for protection of the aircraft is an integrated defensive aids package codenamed "Mini-Kozane", composed of a radar warning receiver (RWR) and an infrared based missile approach warning system (MAWS) providing 360* coverage.
- Additional defensive capability may be incorporated by integration of self defense jamming pods under the fuselage.
- Another important countermeasure is "SML" countermeasures disperser, capable of dispersing chaff and IR countermeasures, housing over 160 packs of various kinds. Release occurs via non-pyrotechnic mechanism using electromagnetism to push the countermeasures weighting from 7 kg to 9 kg depending on type into the airstream. Fully integrated with internal avionics, two such packs were mounted at both wings. New generation of materials allowed to create an extremely effective countermeasure system which, when coupled with extreme maneuverability and jamming, allow to successfully evade attack by newest missiles.
- During the ground attack missions targeting capability is provided by pylon mounted "Horo" targeting pod which incorporates it's own FLIR, HDTV, laser spot tracker, laser marker, video data link, and a digital data recorder, capable of guiding bombs even through smoke and clouds and with low - light / no - light conditions.
- "Strong wind" possesses four hardpoints carrying up to 2500 kilograms or ordnance, alongside with capability to integrate newest models of Nifonese-made and SACTO-made air to air missiles.
- Aside from rockets this plane can count on a single Ryu-92 gattling gun. Ryu-92 is a six barrelled rifled gattling gun shooting 23x115 rounds. Being one of cannons possessing the highest rate of fire in the world, Ryu-92 is gas-operated (requiring no external power source to operate, reloading itself by recoil of the floating barrels) and fed by linkless feed system, with electrical fire control (this new computer-managed system allows the pilot to manage the size of the salvos) and 10 pyrotechnic cocking charges. While it can not match the sustained rate of fire of electric-powered gattling guns, the initial rate of fire of Ryu-92 is far higher. The gun is capable of shooting up to almost 8 500 rounds per minute, which permits it to rip to shreds any target unlucky enough to find itself within it's range. 500 rounds of ammunition are carried, allowing Ohka expend it's ammunition in less than 2 sec, turning whatever the target into a Swiss cheese.
